It will replace my Forester. The dealer will have a Tribeca on display for a day next Tuesday.

Read back in this very thread, I posted about a hundred photos of the Tribeca and about a hundred more of competitors. I crawled into most 3rd rows and took photos of the leg room.

The only mid-sizers that are significantly better are the LR3, Explorer, and Pilot.

Here is the album with pics of the competitors:

    http://www.imagestation.com/album/index.html?id=2132270983

Looking through quickly, the SRX is much worse. XC90 is about the same, good head room but no space for your legs with the middle row all the way back (that's the case with almost all of them).

LR3 is the really dark interior, that's the roomiest one. Pilot is also good. MDX comes later and it's a squeeze. Highlander is worse than the Tribeca. Pacifica is actually not too bad for 6.

Pathfinder was bolt upright, extremely uncomfortable. Murano and RX didn't have a 3rd row (and shouldn't bother).

Go back because I narrarated each photo. Drove the people here crazy as a matter of fact. :P

I wouldn't be concerned... it will already come with tints for the 2nd row and rear, so just get some tints for the front.

My order is Mahogany Red with Grey interior... tired of beige!

    Juice,

Which images are of the Tribeca?. I'm looking at the XC90 or Tribeca as my next vehicle. My wife had a Pilot which had decent room in the third row, but she traded it in for a smaller car. I'd get another Pilot but it's not sporty enough. The Highlander and SRX third rows were terrible -knees hit your chest. The MDX was better but the cushions were not as firm as the Pilot and sank down to far. The XC90 is most comparable to Pilot -less leg room but more comfortable overall. Thanks, Jim

    Your absolutely right!

The Tribeca is the key to Subaru's future. I'd like to see them buy back their 20% from GM. Only time will tell.

When will Edmunds get the Tribeca to perform their specs review & analysis. It will be interesting to get some accurate dimensions.
  • sdufordsduford Member Posts: 577
Dir you at least get a chance to drive it?

Do you ever buy shoes without trying them on first?

Two stories from the newspaper in the city where B9 Tribeca is built, pertaining to the vehicle's production launch. Interestingly, both contain quotes from different high-up individuals at SIA (not SOA or FHI, though) saying B9 Tribeca will be exported to Japan, Australia and Europe.

Yes, Subaru needs to get Tribeca in the hands of Edmunds and others ASAP to get the word out. We have two auto reviewers in our area's daily newspaper (a mid-size paper) and they haven't even received an '05 Outback or Legacy to review yet. And Subaru is really strong in our area. Tragic such an outstanding vehicle has to go without much-needed PR. Hope the same doesn't happen with Tribeca.

Kind of what I was wondering, how or why all these people are doing preorders when no one has driven it. The C&D review was favorable but it seems like less than half of it discussed the driving dynamics...
  • kbzonkbzon Member Posts: 32
No i did not get a chance to drive it yet, they will have one avail. next tuesday. ;)

If I were in the market for a Tribeca-like vehicle, I would probably be OK with ordering one too. I looked at one closely at an auto show, and it has all the ingredients to drive and handle well. Based on my past experience with Subaru wagons, it already has a leg up in my mind. And I haven't seen any competitors I would really want. So at least in my case, it would be an easy sell.

Just pulled from my usual source (cars101.com):

    5 pass: MSRP $31,320 / INVOICE $29,132
    5 pass Limited: MSRP $32,920 / INVOICE $30,603
    7 pass: MSRP $33,020 / INVOICE $30,520
    7 pass DVD: MSRP $34,820 / INVOICE $32,180
    7 pass Limited: MSRP $34,520 / INVOICE $31,911
    7 pass Limited DVD: MSRP $36,320 / INVOICE $33,567
    7 pass Limited NAV: MSRP $36,520 / INVOICE $33,750
    7 pass Limited DVD & NAV: MSRP $38,320 / INVOICE $35,411

    Prices include $695 destination.

Seeing those invoice prices makes me salivate. Wish I were one of you lucky dogs ordering now! Make mine the 7-pass Ltd. in Atlantic Blue Pearl w/grey interior. That's a vehicle I could live with for a LONG time.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,285
I can't decide if I like that color or not. I've seen it on a Legacy, and it's a little too light for my tastes, but not that hideously ugly powder blue I've seen on Lesabres and Cavaliers. A blue-green like Bermuda Blue on the 2005 Tahoe would be perfect. If I were getting a Tribeca, I'd probably get the dark red color.

Subaru did a good job pricing the Tribeca. It's a good alternative to stretching for an Acura/Lexus/Infiniti SUV. Given the great interior - sat in 2 different B9's at the NY car show Subaru pre-show - I'm wondering where they cut corners?

Just have to wait for a test drive...

Someone mentioned 28 mpg highway. NO WAY! My LLBan was stickered at 20 city /28 highway and I haven't gotten over 20 in a long time. Just did a fuel induction service - waiting to see if it improves. 28? NO WAY!

Also, comparison to FX is all wrong. It's a bouncy sports car, not a family hauler. I have yet to see an FX with anyone in the back - especially kids. Test drove the FX 4 times before buying an MDX - hoping it would soften up. My 8 yr. old daughter asked for me to stop her test drive so she could get out after my wife bounced over on top of her! Also read Edmunds posts of people who sold the FX after their kids kept getting sick. No joke...but it is really fun to drive if you are holding on to the steering wheel!

Those are images of the competitors. I put the Tribeca in an album all by itself, here:

Invoice prices look good, I bet by the end of the summer you can get one under $30 grand.

lol reminds me of my first family outing in our '02 MPV going up a winding mountain road. "Dad, I am starting to feel sick..." aww. It is actually hard to have fun with Dunlop 4000s, a tight suspension, and others in the car.

" Seeing those invoice prices makes me salivate. Wish I were one of you lucky dogs ordering now! "

Been watching this board for a couple months, and am very interested in B9 Tribeca, after looking for nearly a year at ALL possible comparable vehicles.
Even without a test drive, I think I've found what we are looking for in this new Subuaru! I live about an hour from Lafayette, and am considering a tour of the factory, if possible soon, to see it being put together. Anyone ever done this?

I have seen this eluded to a couple times now...near invoice prices for pre-orders. Is this just someone's fantasy, or are Suburu dealers offering this officially? The one dealer I visited mentioned the free towing package, etc., but that was before prices were released. Any feedback would be appreciated!
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
Subaru dealers tend to deal well with customers... numbers close to invoice. If you preorder, there are 3 types of freebies, Portable XM radio, $500 LL Bean certificate and free upgrade towing package. But that's valid up to May 19th (I think). BTW, that's not the dealer offering the freebie, that's SOA.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Nice choices. I think I'd be practical and get the towing kit. Though if you order one with DVD and choose the portable XM, then you'd have XM in your SUV.

Nah, the wife would overrule and buy $500 worth of clothes at LL Bean. :D

    -juice
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
.. so that went out the window... Portable XM is kinda useless for me cause I won't be hearing it unless I'm in the car and I would rather have an integrated unit instead... so guess what we went after? DING, DING, DING!!!

The wifey wins the LL Bean certificate... she already had her eye on it so even if I wanted the XM, I'd still lose. ;-)

I think the EPA fuel mileage will be around 18/24.

Based on my Legacy test drive, Subaru cut corners in the following areas:
    * No auto up/down for passenger windows
    * No stability control (Tribeca has it - VDC)
    * Archaic separate key and remote, instead of the integrated fob the European models get
    * Nail-breaker door handles (Tribeca has the right kind)
    * No hill-holder, I thought all stick shift Subarus had it, but only the Forester does

The lack of VDC was a deal-breaker on the Legacy GT. It's otherwise a car I could be happy with.

Now, I am interested in the Tribeca, but I am also interested in the new Audi A3, FWD model. I have driven neither, but I suspect the actual selling prices for models with the same features will be comparable (the Audi selling at list, the Subaru with some discount). The Subaru obviously offers more square footage for the money, and while I don't expect it to drive like a small European car, if it doesn't have some sporty flair, I will remove it from my list. If it's not far off from the Legacy GT wagon, it may be a winner.

I know I'm comparing apples to oranges, and I also know the reliability will be much better with the Subaru.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,285
    * No back-up warning system. If the visibility is as good as the Legacy, this isn't as much of an issue. X5 has it, though.
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
.. then there's no need for a auto-dimmer rearview, IMO.

Nope, no tint. At least not a significant shade.

Strange because the Baja has it, and it would be perfectly legal.

Must be in the same "missing feature box" as the Outback factory tint. :)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, and what's wild is that Subaru had actually mentioned the Outback would get tinted windows in official press releases.

That's what they mean when they say "subject to change".

Yeah, and what's wild is that Subaru had actually mentioned the Outback would get tinted windows in official press releases.

IIRC, it was mentioned as a reason for the Outback becoming a truck - it was a feature that customers wanted. That and a few other features "forced" them to go for the truck designation.

    Still Mad About That.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
How ironic that the only Subie that gets it is the least popular one - Baja.

Subaru's April 1st press release claims that it does.

"This vehicle also comes standard with seven-spoke, 18 x 8-inch aluminum
alloy wheels, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes with ventilated front
and rear discs. Standard safety features include dual front, side seat and
curtain airbags, and four-channel / four-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). For added comfort and
convenience, the Subaru B9 Tribeca comes standard with dual-zone automatic
climate control, tilt/slide tinted-glass moon roof with sliding shade,
electroluminescent gauges, 100W single CD AM/FM stereo with six speakers and
MP3 audio file compatibility, power driver (eight-way), and passenger (four-
way) seat controls with lumbar support adjustment, leather-wrapped steering
wheel and shift knob, 40/20/40 folding rear seat backrest, deep-tinted privacy
glass on rear side and lift-gate, and HomeLink(R)."
  • cpp788xcpp788x Member Posts: 47
The Tribeca does have " Deep tinted privacy glass" starting from the B pillars. This is stated in the Sales brochure list of standard features.

While the pricing is very good the tribeca misses a few key features that some of the competition has.
the features that this car should have also had are back up sensors, memory seats, telescoping steering wheel and 8 way power passenger seat. These will probably show up mid-year or 2007. Is it worth the wait? the price will go up too.

... but the Tribeca's in NY had tints, except the fronts; hence my comments on the auto-dimming mirror.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Maybe a light tint, certainly nowhere near as dark as the Baja's rear windows.

Baja must have about a 20% tint, as in 20% of light gets through.

I have 35% on my Forester.

I'd say the Tribeca's is 50% or higher.

    -juice
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,285
Most cars list "tinted" glass as a feature, but it's very, very slight (I would estimate 90-95% of light gets through). I'm sure it's the maximum allowed by regulation. I like the look of a "barely" tinted window, like one where 80-85% of the light gets through, but I'm in the minority.

Are tinted windows illegal in Europe?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
With very lax laws in most states here, they're often 20% from the factory, that includes vans and SUVs.

  • cpp788xcpp788x Member Posts: 47
I have factory privacy glass on my chrysler minivan so I have something to compare it to. Brights are never a problem in the van. From what I remember at the show the glass was as dark as my van.

    Charlie
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I must be geezin', I don't recall the windows being nearly that dark. To me the DCX vans seem a lot darker.

I checked the brochure and it's clearly photochopped. In some of the pictures the windows are totally clear, in others they are slightly darker than the windshield, but not that much.

  • cpp788xcpp788x Member Posts: 47
Brochures are advertising, and advertising makes a product look better than it is. The show samples may have lighter glass so the inside can be seen from behind the ropes. The April 4th production cars may have the same glass as the Baja. It's more cost effective to use the same type of glass in as many models as possible.

Anyway, it is what it is and if it's to light my wife crosses the tribeca off the list.

    Charlie
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,285
There was a Tribeca at the Louisville New Car Show, but it was behind ropes. No fun! The front end is every bit as hideous in person as it is in pictures.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
I think your opinion is opposite of almost everyone else here. Even people who hated the styling at first, like me, have changed their opinion after seeing the Tribeca in person.

    Craig
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,285
Not to be patronizing, but "everyone else here" seems to be almost exclusively Subaru diehards. I love the Legacy GT, but lack of VDC has removed it from my consideration. The other issues I have with it are forgivable, and my local Subaru dealer has never failed to impress.
  • sdufordsduford Member Posts: 577
Hmm, I've seen a lot of "it's not as bad in person" or "it's not as ugly in person".

But I didn't see too many (if any), "it looks great in person!"
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,285
***But I didn't see too many (if any), "it looks great in person!"***

Here ya go: It looks great in person, from the side, and from the rear! :P
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Well, given that Subaru expects most buyers will be existing Subaru owners, that should work out just fine. 40k/year is a drop in the bucket for the SUV segment, and there are more than 10 times that many former Outback owners looking to trade up.

In that context, that is relatively low-volume goals, the Tribeca should easily find enough buyers.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the interior colors of the Tribeca? Every pic I see is of the tan interior. Are there pics of the gray/stone interior anywhere? Even on the official Tribeca site there is only the tan interior...

  • sweet_subiesweet_subie Member Posts: 1,394
it looks like that. it is all gray interior or all tan. this one is all gray
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Two-tone interiors are meant to satisfy those that are bored by the "sea of gray" or all beige interiors.

I prefer the beige because the colors seem to match better, IMHO. But someone that wants some variety might prefer the gray, and I think more people here voted that way.
