We just ordered the QuadCab 4X4 in Okeechobee, FL, for $300 over invoice with NO "Dealer Charge" or other profit boosters, using the web site "Autovantage" (Thanks for advice!). All five Florida east coast dealers (Ft. Pierce to Delray) refused to budge on the $300 dealer fee plus $500 over invoice. Note: South Florida gets charged $475 for ads on invoice, while Orlando area only pays $400!). Last problem--WILL THE $1,000 FACTORY REBATE BE EXTENDED PAST 1/8/01???

You won't find anything out about the rebate. You currently have to take delivery by Jan 8. If DC let it slip that it would be extended, folks would put off buying new trucks, costing DC the rebate difference between now and then. If they revealed that they wouldn't, then prospective buyers for next year would buy now and cost them $1,000 apiece in lost revenue. The dealers won't find out anything until Jan 8, or perhaps a few days beforehand.

Well I took delivery of my 2001 Quad Cab SLT. Its Garnet Red with Leather, 4.7 4x4, pretty much loaded. The only thing I did not get was the sliding window. I wanted it but this one had the solid tinted back window. Other than that, it's a beautiful vehicle!! I am extremely pleased...someone else mentioned the wheel not locking, I couldn't get mine to lock either...kinda odd..anyway, love it and will keep you posted!!!

Ok, maybe this is a dumb question, but, when you
open the center console, on top there are two
places for things. One is a pen holder, but the
other is a small square hole. What the heck is this
used for? Dealer said "Maybe post it notes?"
    Anybody have a clue? Thanks!!!

What are the black plastic "plugs" in the bed floor for?
  • bobs5bobs5 Member Posts: 557
I looked at my paperwork and could not find a "dealer fee". Guess this is just a profit making device for the dealer.

Glad to hear you found a deal which was acceptable.

When I started searching for a dealer, I made an internet request to the closest dealer, but they did not respond promptly.

I then made a request through autobytel, and within an hour, a dealer contacted me, and by the afternoon the deal was made.

The next day the closest dealer finally got around to responding, but it was too late. This was 3 days after initial email request, not within the 24 hours which their website proclaimed.

There is the $500 farm bureau rebate for people who are members for 30 days. If you can call the local bureau and join over the phone then there will probably be enough time to have this rebate apply. I was too slow on this one.

With the current financial difficulties that Dodge is experiencing, I would not expect the $1000 Dodge rebate to be extended after 1/08/01, but ya never know.

My deal was $400 over invoice at time of ordering. When the truck arrived there was an increase in invoice and destination to the tune of $238. The dealer absorbed the increase and honored the original price. It ended up at $162 over invoice before $1000 rebate.

That is an incredible price you got! congratulations.
  • zonkzonk Member Posts: 208
Thanks! Yeah, I thought it was pretty good, too. Too good to pass up. I flew into Tulsa, taking advantage of some frequent flyer miles I had racked up. When I got to the dealer, Melton in Claremore, OK, I was nervous since the truck had been on the dealer's lot for a while. I went over it real well, couldn't find anything wrong except for a slight pull to the left upon braking. Drove it back to Alabama the next day. No problems, very comfortable, just NICE! I have no idea why it stayed on the lot so long. But they were trying to move it and I guess that's why they subtracted their holdback. Anyway, no complaints about the truck and its perfromance.

The plastic covers the front tie-downs. These tie-downs are attached to the frame.

I belive in the center console, the small square hole is for a light, I am not sure but I read something in the 2001 Dakota brochure about a light right there. If you have the brochure check it out. It shows a picture of the console opened.

OK guys, give me some advice... I thinking of getting a 4X4 Sport QC with the 3.9 and a 5 speed. I'm not planning to do any big time towing, and would like a truck that gets reasonable mileage while taking the family up to the snow. I realize the 3.9 is based on old technology (the much derided "318"), but does it have the poop to get out of it's own way?

Let me know what you think...
  • steve234steve234 Member Posts: 460
If you research the postings, you will find the majority of the owners favor the 4.7. The 3.9 is a good engine. I drive a 2000 CC with the 3.9 and a 01 w/4.7. I get better mileage with the 4.7, but that is more a function of how they are driven. The 3.9 is based on the 5.2 which is a 50s-60s gen engine. Is is a faithful old beast, but showing its age. The 4.7 is probably the best engine on the market in its size category. The game is efficiency and the 4.7 is a much more efficient engine. The only problem with it is the occasional urge to blow someones doors off.

Just picked up my new Quad Cab on the 19th. What a great truck. Intense Blue, SLT, 2WD, Heavy Duty Service Group, SLT Plus Decor Group, 3.92 Anti Spin Rearend, Heated Mirrors, CD and Leather Steering Wheel. I got 200 miles on it now and know that it was the better choice of the trucks that I could have bought. I just wanted to pass along my first problem. The morning after I had drove my truck home I got in it to go to work. It was -10 degrees outside so I thought it wwould be a good idea to turn on some heat. The floor gates would not open. I moved the selector and everything else worked. But when I returned it back to the floor, nothing. Have got an appointment made. Good thing it is under warrenty. I will post the remedy when it is fixed next week. Other than that , it has great power and rides great.
  • bobs5bobs5 Member Posts: 557
I too, feel the heat from the floor vents could be better. The vent control mechanism does seem kind of sluggish when extremely cold.
There are many positions the dial which directs the air flow, and I think this is an area which could better designed.
Another area of concern is the windshield defroster duct. It would be nice if the duct was wider to accomindate the entire windshield.

My first problem was with the function of the driver's side rear door window movement. It has manual windows and it would roll down easily but the mechanism would jam when trying to roll up. They adjusted it so now it will close but is still very hard.
Service department has ordered a "window regulator", so I am waiting for that

    good luck
  • tacoma_trdtacoma_trd Member Posts: 135
Don't get it!! I know a few people who have had them and they do not last, you can literally peel it off with your hands. You are better off just getting a spray in liner, even the plastic drop in liners would last longer than the herculiner.

Purchased my Dakota 2001 Quad Cab about 3 weeks ago. Love the vehicle for all that it offers, and it is one damn good looking truck! Besides having some cosmetic issues with industrial fallout on the paint and scratches accumulated during transport, I also have a problem using my key to open the driver-side door lock since it is very loose and has been pushed all the way inside the door itself. The passenger-side door lock is somewhat loose as well and may inevitably encounter the same fate. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I am contemplating about getting a carpet bedliner (or a bed rug as it may be otherwise known) vs. a spray on bedliner like Line-X or a standard plastic bedliner. Any comments and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a Bed Rug in my Ranger for about 6 months now. Been great. Not got it really filthy yet, so haven't had to clean it much. Does a good job of stopping stuff from sliding around. Covers up the tiedowns, but I use the side-rails for that.

Just got a firm good on delivery price from my dealer for a Dakota 01 QC 4x4 and wanted to run it by the forum. And how do I go about getting the farm bureau 500 discount? I own TN farm acreage but live in VA.Appreciate any comment.

From my deal that I just got. 200.00 over invoice 585.00 delovery, tax, title, and license, minus 1000.00 rebate. Yours doesn't sound too bad. The advertising fee is bull or can be eliminated if you wait four weeks and order the truck. I got a fully loaded 2wd 4.7 5speed for 21,020.00 hope I helped.
  • edpatruckedpatruck Member Posts: 12
    We bought our truck yesterday.

It's a 2WD Quad cab with 26G SLT Quick order package, ADJ Heavy Duty Service Group, AHC Trailer Tow Group, AJB Security, AJD Leather Interior, ATK SLT Plus Decor Group, DG4 Auto Xmission, EVA 4.7 L V8, GFD Sliding Rear Window, GTS, Power heated foldaway mirrors, LNJ Fog Lamps, JPS Power Driver Seat, RAZ Cassette/CD Equalizer, and SCG Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel. The invoice also included the following charges: $460 advertising and $570 delivery. (

We agreed to pay 1/2% over invoice for dealer profit, so we added up the invoice and then added 1/2% to get to the purchase price. The invoice added up to $24,078, so the dealer profit we agreed to pay turned out to be about $120. The purchase price then became $24,198.39.

As you can see, we paid the advertising, Like you, I'm not sure if this is a valid charge, but since it appearred on the invoice... We live in NC. We deducted the value of the trade-in from the purchase price and paid 3% sales tax on this difference. Then we paid $189.50 for doc and title fee and another $45 for transferring the tags from our trade-in vehicle. Finally we deducted the $1,000 rebate.

The dealer was not very busy when we were there yesterday, but anticipated business picking up over the next week or so (or so he said.) They admitted that business has really been off of the normal pace due to the election mess. This may give you greater leverage. We chose to take a car they had on the lot, this may also help. We sent faxes to dealers in our area to get their best offer. We had two that would sell to us for 1/2% over invoice. We may have been able to do better, but I got tired and just wanted to go buy the truck.

If you have a trade-in, read further. Do you homework on the potential value of the vehicle before you head to the dealer. If you have a CarMax in your area, swing by and get from them the amount they'll give you for your used car, and keep this in your back pocket. See what the dealer will offer you first, but then if the dealer won't meet or exceed the CarMax price you can always go back to CarMax, get the check from them and head back to the dealer with cash instead of a trade. (This may be particularly useful if you have a high mileage trade and the dealer tries to tell you he won't keep your vehicle, he'll wholesale it.) My unsolicited advice to you is that if you are not happy with the trade-in, walk out and regroup. The first dealer we visited yesterday offered us $6000 in trade and spent 20 minutes telling us how he'd have to dump the car at an auction, blah, blah, blah. CarMax offered us $8,000, which was better, but still very low, we thought. At the second dealer, we got $12,600 which was pretty close to the NADA blue book for trade-in.

I'm picking up the truck this afternoon and I can't wait. Good luck with your purchase.
    (Sorry for the long post!)
  • ilikepickupsilikepickups Member Posts: 2
Yes Edpatruck , that was quite a spread on trade price.

You know that is the part of the whole truck buying processes that makes it tricky , the trade.

I mean when it is all said and done, with all the numbers , it is the bottom line that counts.

Is CarMax regional or national? Never heard of them. Please tell us more about them.

I ordered my 4x4 Quad on Dec.1 from dealer in Ft. lauderdale,Lf. Was hopeful that it would come in time for rebate, but am doubtful now. Last update from customer service said was complete on 12-21, scheduled to be shipped. Info. prior to New Years indicated ship date of 1-15-01. I kind of expect not receiving it as they know if shipping delayed they don't pay rebate. I would like to believe this would not be a consideration, but I am a skeptic. I am looking forward to truck. Has anyone taken delivery on an ordered truck between Christmas and New Years? Farm Bureau rebate is still in effect. Being a member for 30 days prior to taking delivery seems to be the requirement. Good luck to all who have taken delivery of your new trucks and have a safe New year. Jim

Sorry if Im repeating myself. I posted twice last night wee minutes of the new millenium. saw them on the list later but now there gone?? I have a 2000 QC 4x4 4.7 auto slt+ 29k miles long daily commute. I love this truck.1st 4x4 1st dodge.I have a large amount of thick condensation /sludge in the oil cap. dealer chk it out couldnt find any problem - says normal on 4.7. BS! Ive done all my own maint & didnt have this problem til now. Antifreeze was low also. My mind tells me head gasket/cracked head but the oils is still clean & clear?? Im nearing end of warrantee (havent purchased extended YET) so Im very concerned. Any thoughts or similar problems reported?.I know there is a tsb relating to this but this is not thin milky condensation.

Jim, I ordered my '01 Quad at Thanksgiving and was given a 1/15/01 delivery. The truck was delivered on 12/27/00 to the dealers. Also..you should qualify for the $1000 rebate no matter when it gets delivered..you ordered it during the rebate period. Check with your dealer!!!!

Belive it or not, for once the dealer was right. On early production 2000's this is a greater problem than late 2000-2001's. The design of this engine puts the fill tube directly in line with an opening next to the rad. this allows cold air to blow onto the tube which causes condensation inside the tube that mixes with the oil there. There has been a TSB to fix this on early '00s and is fixed on later trucks. The fix is a baffle next to the rad. and a redesigned cap for the fill tube. The dealer should fix this if it hasn't been done. On later trucks, in a cold climate this may still occur but, to a much smaller degree. In my personal 01 I don't find it is bad enough to warrent concern, but I have heard of some that wrap the tube w/insulation to reduce the condensation there. From what I've seen/heard the goo can get pretty thick ( and amount will vary based on outside temp) but, if have a huge amount it may be a leak. You would have the first case of a head gasket I've seen posted. Please keep us (and the owners discussion groups) informed of any outcome.

CarMax is located in CA, TX, WI, FL, TN, GA, SC, NC, VA, and MD. The website is www.carmax.com. I think it's part of the Circuit City megabusiness. They buy and sell used cars and won't haggle on the prices. (Apparently they also sell new cars, but I don't know anything about that part of the business.) They will purchase your used car even if you aren't going to buy a car there. They look over your car and then provide you with a printed price that they will pay you. The printout they give you is good for 3 days/300 miles (whichever comes first). If you decide to sell your car, they take it and provide you with a check. It was quick and painless and gave us a baseline for how much we could expect. I thought their estimate was low, but not as low as the first dealer I visited. For example, on our Honda, they determined the condition to be "Fair" instead of "Good" and as I said earlier, they won't haggle, so it's take it or leave it, BUT it was still more than one of the dealerships offered on trade-in.

Thanks for the info...I've had such very good luck with past trucks & put miles on like pounds from holiday cookin'. The thing that threw me was the bright yellow color....I will calm down. I am completely happy with this QC. Even with a few probs I can deal with it. The Ice storm last week proved how good this truck is. I always drove like an idiot with a 2wd , now I can do so & feel safe. I will watch the sludge closely. The dealer ordered the mods to hide the gunk. I'll try the insulation trick....Thanks again.

Still have not pulled the trigger on the 01 quad purchase and the time is short to take advantage of the rebate. Does anyone have any info on possible lowering of interest rates to something like the 0.9% deal that "other" vehicles are getting. Buy now?? What about the 02's? Detroit show is soon and maybe some changes to the quad?. Help

Hi everybody. I just ordered my 2001 Quad Cab today. Got the sport edition, 4X4, 5spd, suspension package, all power interior, 4.7 V8, Premium sound system, and lots of other goodies. After the $1000 rebate my total came to $25,000.

Did I get a good deal, or did I get ripped off? I have never ordered a new vehicle before and didn't know where I stood on the price situation.

Are you aware of the $500.00 Farm Bureau discount for Dodge trucks? If you are not, try this link.
www.fb.com. You must be a member for 30 days prior to taking delivery. If you ordered a vehicle, that will give you the necessary time element.

Has anyone had their locks start to have a loud noise coming from them when they lock? Mine just started and I haven't been able to get to the dealer for the ice we have had and wanted to know what anyone had done for the problem before I go
    Thanks

Your symptoms sound identical to those
experienced on our Dodge GC. It will
eventually result in a replacement of
motor parts (we've had it in twice for surgery).
The loud noise will continue for a while and
the lock will eventually fail. Recommend you
take it to the dealer who should recognize the
problem, which isn't uncommon to the
    Chrysler products.

For those that are wondering what the small square hole in the center console is for, it is for placing a travel size packet of Kleenex tissues there. In the Dodge Dakota 2001 catalog it not only shows a photo of tissue in the square section of the console but also provides documentation as follows on page 9:

So many amenities. Your cellular phone, CDs, tapes, coins, TISSUE PAPER, one-liter bottle, 32 oz. cups, even your pen - there's space for all this and more - in the new center floor console.

Does the Mopar Gull Wing tonneau cover or any other hard top tonneau cover for that matter fit over bedrail and tailgate caps/protectors? Are there any good ones out there that do a great job of keeping water out as well? Any input and feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I am buying a 2001 AC with the 4.7L, auto, and towing package. How does this do towing a 24' travel trailer (approx. 4,400 bbs. loaded)? I will be doing some towing in the mountains and don't want to burn up the truck. I would also like to avoid going to the 5.9L, because of gas mileage. Please let me know what you think.

A question to those who have the Infinity Six Speaker system...
I did not get the system with my Quad. But I would like to add more speakers to the system. I'm wondering if I can purchase just the speaker enclosures and mount aftermarket speaker within them. Does it look like the enclosures (on front windshield posts) are simple additions? Or very involved to add to another truck? Your opinions please.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to swap the standard mirrors for the optional 9 inch heated variety. also with adding the trip computer/power option ? are these two items already wired in the wiring harness?? I ordered my truck with these options originally but due to several delays, delays, delays and so on I canceled & bought the one I have off the showroom flr. I only gave up the mirrors, trip computer add & infinity radio/speaker upgrade & in place I got LSD and skid plates. Im happy with that....but would like the other goodies if not too dificult & costly to add.
  • mulderigmulderig Member Posts: 31
murry22: Swapping the mirrors should be no problem but I'm not sure about the wiring for the heaters. Do you have the button on the dash for the defroster. As far as the overhead trip computer goes you will need a whole new interior wiring harness. I already checked that out.

martink98: Is your truck a 00 or 01 because on the 01 they were moved to the door panel. I don't know how easy it would be to mount them but you could contact crutch field and they should be able to help you out

OK so they offered it as a free bonus when I bought my 4x4 QC Sport w/17" wheels 4.7 auto, along with the side step tubes, bed extender and the $1000 off. (26k) The mileage is good. Got 19 MPG going to Corpus Christ from Austin, but I think the wind was with me. Yes I think it's great. The problem is that the dealer had the roof rack put on wrong. It sets about 6" forward than it should and thus is pulling the metal on the cab up toward the rack and there's also a gap. It's obvious when you look at the brochures illustrating what it should look like. Plus the protective strips in the center are all unaligned ending at different spots. The sales person I bought it from wasn't in so I brought it up to the associate manager and he said that they'd fix it by moving the racks back to where they should be and doing the body work on the roof to fix the holes in front... It'll take 3-4 days to do and they'll front me a car to use since it was their fault. However now that the sales person I dealt with originally is back from vacation, she's trying to convince me that there isn't a problem, the racks are on right. She acts like this is all my fault that this isn't a problem needing to be fixed. Am I off on this? I've had several people plus a professional installer say that the rack doesn't look right. Also the associate manager said that the correction and body work to the roof would not depreciate the value of the truck since it wasn't a wreck.

Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for all the great info, because of all the knowledgeable people posting here, I ordered my Q-C just before Christmas, it was built on Friday 12-23-00, right before the plant closed for the holidays. Any thoughts about more problems with cars built on a Friday? How about on a Friday before vacation? Also, when I called to find out the status of my car, I was told on Tuesday, Jan.2 it was built and waiting final inspection, then on Thursday, Jan. 4, I was given the same status. So I asked them how long it takes for the final inspection and then was told that the plant was closed that week and the next week. Sounds to me like they closed the plant for 2 extra weeks after Christmas week. Might that be why they moved the rebate out 2 weeks?

I would go to www.crutchfield.com and on there you can type in the specs on your truck and they will give you all the speakers they sell that will fit your truck. They will also tell you the size speakers that fit your truck. I have delt through them for a while and have had great service. They sell infinity speakers which will be much better than the ones that come in the dakota's from the factory. Also it will not cost close to $600 for this upgrade, I believe the infinty reference speakers are $70-$100. These will sound much better than the infinty speakers that come in the dakota's. Also if you really want good definition and great sound, you can add a pair of tweeters. I changed all factory speakers and added tweeters and subwoofers in my truck and I can tell you the tweeters help a lot. Check it out to see what they have.

I will be ordering a QC 4WD SLT in a few days. I first wanted the 4.7L V8, but heard the multi-speed auto transmission has some problems, so I decided to get a 5 speed manual. Wife put the nix on this. Currently plan to order 5.9L V8. I know this is old tecnology and poor gas milage, but believe it is tried and proven. Am I missing anything? Anyone know about any problems with the 5.9 with auto transmission or what the realistic mileage might be? Thanks
