Is it possible for someone to show a picture of
what the ford tonneau cover looks like on the ST
perhaps from side and rear angles. I'm not visualizing it very well especially that the tie downs are not removed.

Hi all, I have a problem that I have not seen posted here before. When I am going around 55 mph or higher I get a shimmy in the rear end that feels like I am getting a massage on my fanny and back. I have had it to the dealer 2 times and had the wheels balanced both times and they tell me it is not the rear-end cause it doesn't make any noise. So does any one out there have any ideas as to what may be wrong? It was a long trip to Las Vegas from Phoenix round trip feeling that shimmy the whole time. One note; I got 21 mpg on my trip. So any help would be appreciated and will be bringing the ST to the dealer on Thurs. the 27 of July. Thanks all......AL

Tell your service people to look in the FACTORY SHOP manual for the possible causes of your shimmy. It could be numerous things like the drive shaft balance, out of spec rear drums, shifting belts in the Firestone tires, etc. Don't settle for them telling you BS. It's easy to rebalance the tires, but more difficult and time consuming to really diagnose your problem. I have a friend that went through this with a Chevy Blazer recently and Chevy even brought in a regional engineer to look at the problem and all they did was replace his tires. This didn't fix the prob and it had been to the dealer so many times that he went to court under the lemon law in FL and won. Now he owns a Ford Explorer. I hope you don't have to go this far. In addition, have the mechanic check Ford's computer for any service bulletins on this prob., which could greatly speed up a resolution. They have a tendency not to do this and it wastes you time and patience!

Can someone post the customer service number. I am trying to track my ST. It is scheduled for assembly this week and I am trying to determine if I will get it before I leave on vacation 8/2.

    An example of time delays:
    ordered 3/16/00
    built 4/18/00
    delivered 5/10/00

Delivery takes atleast 3 weeks from build date.
  • dolphins66dolphins66 Member Posts: 78
Delivery on ours AFTER the build date was actually only 2 weeks so it does vary sometimes. Don't want to get any hopes up but that's what our experience was.

    Ordered: 2/28/00
Build Date Week: 5/8-5/12 (don't know EXACT date)
    Delivered: 5/25
    P/U: 5/26

I was wondering if I just ordered a ST Monday.... Can I change it from a 2x4 to a 4x4 or is it to late? My dealer says he will get back to me with as answer. I just want to see if he will feed me some BS.

has anybody else had trouble with excessive wind noise and what was done to fix the problem i have had mine in 6 times need help
  • dolphins66dolphins66 Member Posts: 78
ant trac: No, you can change your order to a 4X2 especially since it's going to take some time until Ford even sets up a vin or build date.
    Good luck!
  • dolphins66dolphins66 Member Posts: 78
toni56: Since the wind noise is primarily coming from the exterior mirrors, the only thing to fix that is to have them removed. HA! HA!

Probably what might help would be purchasing extra insulation and having the dealer install it. I don't recall the exact name for that but I do remember our dealer offered that option the day we picked up our vehicle.
  • bigdogst1bigdogst1 Member Posts: 22
Been out of town for a bit but thought that I should note my A.R.E. LSII cover was installed and looks killer! Added the cloth cover on the bottom and the electric lock that works with the existing keyless entry. Everything is good and so far the mpg (1st tank) has not increased. But just over 7K miles still leaves some room for improvement.

Here is the update on my Island Blue 2WD w/Tan Leather, SG, CG, LS, Moon Roof, 6-CD

Called the 800 number on monday and they confirmed that my ST was built....

She said it was built between 17th - 24th of this month and it will be at my dealer between 7th-14th of Aug.

    Can't wait.

Then went to my dealer tuesday and got my VIN

I am already registered on the "ownerconnection" at the Ford website.

The girl at the dealership said they send her a box car number when they put it on the train and
a truck number when it gets on the truck headed for the dealership.

Drop point from train to truck is Memphis, Tenn. for me.

The girl at the dealership knows more then the person at the 800 number. :-)

I'm gonna go by friday and see if she has any updates.

Guess once I get my truck I'll send her some flowers and a thank-you card.

I have been by there just about every other day to see her since my truck was ordered.

I used to ask the salesman in the beginning and all he would say is "I need to talk to Joyce" (the girl I see now)

I have gotten to the point where I walk past him and just say "hi" and keep on going to her office.

CAN'T WAIT FOR MY ST!!!!!!!! :-)

From local ARE dealer. Used $20 coupon off of the website. It should arrive in three weeks. I purchased the Ford bug deflector shield that conforms to the hood and fenders. The Ford parts guy let me have it for $65.00 which I thought was a pretty good deal. He said that they have a big stock of them. I also asked for a locking gas cap which he said that they do not have for the 2001 vehicles yet. I purchased a 2000 Explorer locking gas cap and it fit perfectly. My wife is a school administrator and she comes in contact with "mischievous challenges" to be politically correct. Anyway, she still loves her truck. And she looks so GOOD in it.

BigDog1,how does the cover look after you removed the cargo hooks on the side of the bed. From the picture on the web site it looks like the paint would show thru plastic cover on the bed and the holes would be exposed as the cover does not go over the removed hooks.
  • bigdogst1bigdogst1 Member Posts: 22
With the A.R.E. cover the hooks stay on....the other one has the hooks removed!

How long does it take order my ST on March 22/00
ordered everything possible except 6cd player still no word on when it will be built
  • ant_tracant_trac Member Posts: 5
Well I just upgraded from a fully loaded 2x4 ST to a fully loaded 4x4ST (w/o leather)! 6 disc CD, moon roof, cage, cover, and all!! One problem.... When my dealer sent me a new quote it looked like something was wrong... It look like he is trying to charge me $931 for a 5-speed automatic Overdrive. This is a Edmunds invoice 44D I think. When you go to the Ford web site and build one it does not charge you for the 44D. I called 3 other dealer and they said it's "free" as part of the engine. DID ANY OF YOU PAY FOR THIS?
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300

Just recently Ford released the Standard Transmission. Although the Automatic is listed separately, the total cost should still be the same as it would have previously. In other words although you now see a line item for the transmission the overall base price of the 4X4 SHOULD still the same. Remember to adjust for Job #2 changes.

If you did NOT order the Automatic the cost would have been less.

I have been hearing this bell ringing sound coming up from between the bed and the cab. Me and the service department has spent hours looking for this. They have had it for a week and a half now and finaly run a scann on fords post of things wrong with the st's .Ford said they are getting alot of complaint about this and they looked into it and found that it is the chain that run's from the tranmission to the transfer case . He said ford isn't sure what they are going to do yet to resolve this but they do know about it.
The ring is such a high pitch that it can be hard to hear. Have someone get in the back seat and put the back window down and listen between the bed and the cab. It will sound like a bell ringing. I was told not to worry about something breaking or going wrong .. ????? I would like to think that way....

I went through the same scenario about five weeks ago when we ordered a 2001 2-door Sport. The dealership had 15 Explorer Sports in stock with the 5-speed auto as standard equipment, however, when we placed our order it showed the auto as an option. The difference was $390 extra for the auto. Why? Because the base price was lowered to indicate the 5-speed manual was now standard equipment and the auto was a $931 option (dealer invoice price). The auto as standard equipment was an INTRODUCTORY on the 2001 trucks, however, the brochure clearly states in small fonts, "Subject to change without notice."

The dealer would not recognize the auto as standard even though Edmund and the Ford home website showed it as standard equipment. I even got in touch with the Ford Customer Assistance and they verified that it was standard --- according to the company's Truck Option Guidelines book. But the dealer would not concede. And Ford said that there is nothing that they can do to pressure the dealer to acknowledge it. We got our deposit back and went to another dealer who had just received an ST that my wife wanted.

My advice is pay the additional $390 for the auto and be happy with your truck. It's a little more and it won't really matter in the whole scheme of things. Just be sure that you will be happy with your dealer. Good Luck!!!

I have just ordered my sports trac last week is there a way I can keep up with it. I think I remember someone putting a web address here or I could have been just dreaming. This place has been a big help with getting information about the ST. Thanks all!!
  • jetskijetski Member Posts: 5
Thanks for everyone's response. Since I'm not much for paying for all the extra bells and whistles (never have) mine was ordered with only one option - THE CAGE. At the time I also thought this might help speed up the delivery time (ha, ha, ha, ha). Sounded like good rationale thinking at the time.

Anyway, even if I could have had it the next day, I would have only ordered just the CAGE.

I've had my ST one month now...still loving every minute of it. I don't know how fast Edmunds is with info....but I just wanted to let all you "Want a Beeees" know that my paper this my newspaper this morning has a section called auto weekly, and each week they list incentives...and guess what? It says that Ford is offering 6.9 to 8.9 on the Sport Trac. They were offering 7.9 flat when I ordered mine...my credit union was has a standard 7.4 on new so I went with them. I hope this is helpful...Hey any way to save a penny eh? Is this the beginning of rebates to come? I look each week--hate to think someone was getting a better deal than me. Good luck---Later.
  • fordnutfordnut Member Posts: 80
Too bad you didn't know about these lower rates before you bought, but they were published on Edmund's and Ford's web site for a few months. :-(
Anyway I'm waiting for some kind of cash rebate (good old supply and demand) or the avail. of the X-plan to buy mine. I also hope they can fix most of the problems posted on this board before I order.... I really don't want to see it in the repair shop soon after it arrives!
  • tractiontraction Member Posts: 141
The ST has had the low financing since at least April that I am aware of. I chose the financing for 36 months, I think it is 7.9%. My credit union had a lower rate, but Ford Credit is a great company to deal with, very professional and easy to deal. Especially at the end of the load when it is time to get the final paperwork and title. I have had problems getting my title at the end of the loan from my Credit Union in the past, but never had any problems with Ford Credit.

Ford Credit also has a good web site where you can check on your loan account and set up direct payment, etc. IMHO, Ford Credit is the best out there.

Have any of you ST owners that have purchased the Tonneau cover from Ford look into having it painted the color of your ST instead of the basic black. If so what prices where you quoted for the work?
  • ant_tracant_trac Member Posts: 5
Buyer Beware! I just recently ordered a 4x4 ST, Black w/ SG,CG,CG, Moon roof,6 CD, subwoofer, cage, and T cover on Monday. Basically everything but leather. My dealer tried to charge me for the 44D 5 speed overdrive which is $931. After I checking the official ford web site and calling 3 other dealers and confirmed that it's standard equipment he changed his toon. So hopefully with all the options I will receive my trac before next year.

The dealer closest to my house would only go as low as $1,000 below NSRP. I found another location that would sell it to me for $200 over invoice and I qualify for the recent college grad rebate. I hope I can get the 6.9 financing! I can't wait to get my ST! This site is great and thanks for all the feedback. I will keep you updated.

Make sure when you purchase your ST to read everything you are being charged for. He also charge me with a $255 FDA cost and $25 for gas :~( but I wont worry about that.

Also where do they put the subwoofer on those new Pioneer CD systems?

I've had my Red 4WD ST with every option but leather and a moonroof for a month. Really like it alot! Mileage has been ok, not great(16 MPG ave.) Didn't order the tonneau cover because dealer said it "might delay your order". Boy, I guess he was right! Am getting the cover through the dealer as we speak. I guess three types are available (a soft one, a 1-piece hard and a 2-piece hard). I've ordered the 2-piece. Is that the best choice? Any opinions? Only problem to date was an annoying rattle in the dash. It came and went and appeared to be located in the middle of the dash. I got sick of hearing it so I crawled under the dash and saw a metal strut going from the back of the dash to the floorboard. It has two bolts. I tightened them and the rattle is gone! Might be worth trying if you have a rattle in the dash. So far, great vehicle that gets lots of looks and does what I expected it to do.

HI TO ALL BEWARE OF SPORT TRAC WITH THE MOONROOF BECAUSE THEY ARE LEAKING BECAUSE OF THE DESIGN I OWN ONE AND I'M ON THE VERG OF HAVING FORD BUY IT BACK BECAUSE OF THE LEAKING AND THE DEALER SOME HOW CANNOT FIX IT AND IN MY STATE IF YOUR CAR ARE OF SERVICE FOR MORE THAN 15 BUSINESS DAYS IT IS CONSIDER A LEMON SO TO ALL THAT HAVE ONE U CAN CHEK TO SEE HOW POOR DESIGN OF THE SUNROOF IS ONTHE GLASS AROUND THE SUNROOF THEY USED A VELVET MATIRIAL INSTEAD OF RUBBER .SO IF U WERE TO POOR A JUG OF WATER ON THE TOP OF THE SUNROOF U WOULD SEE THAT THE WATER GO THROUGH THE VEVLVET AROUND THE GLASS AND STRAIGHT IN THE ROOF. IN OTHER WORD WATER IS GETTING IN SIDE AND THE WAY THE DRIP TUBE AND THE TRAP IS MADE IF YOUR TRUCK IS PARK ON A INCLINE THE WATER ROLL BACK IN TO THE HEADLINER.I LOVE MY TRUCK BUT IF I NEW WHAT I KNEW NOW I WOULD BOUGHT IT WITHOUT THE MOONROOF
I WAS TOLD THAT FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.
I HOPE I DIDNT SCARED ANYONE THAT HAS A MOONROOF IN THEIR SPORT TRAC.

I spoke with Brian today at the tonneau cover ordering number and he said that the next batch of letters will not be goin out until next week, the first week in August. So, if you are like me and have not received your letter yet, it should come soon, hopefully.

Just got back from a 3 day road trip in the ST throughout the SoCal desert. I rolled up and stored the Berber floor mats, stuffed the radio with 6 CDs, flipped down part of the rear seat and off we went...'Exploring'. The ST performed awesome!...even in temps that reached 118 degrees. Most days the temps were up to 115.

Even with a black-on-charcoal ST, the Air Conditioning performed great. Most of the time I only had to have it on the 2nd fan setting to keep things cool, even in the middle of the day.

The engine temp never budged from where it usually is, just below the 1/2 mark. It stayed there even going up grades in these temperatures, WITH the A/C on of course. Plenty of power too, and no pinging on 87 octane. This thing could easily tow in these conditions.

I got about 18.3 mpg with about 60% highway going 75-80 mph.

The ST is a great perfoming vehicle, very confortable to drive, good visibility, lots of versitility and lots of places to store stuff.

New ST owners...don't forget to register your vehicle online with Ford at the URL below. You will need your VIN number to register.

I received my letter from Ford to get the Tonneau Cover for $590 on Thursday 7/27. My name was also added in the batch that did not receive their letter in the first time around. The rest of you should be getting yours soon, per Brian at Customer Service.

I ordered my ST 4x2 on July 5th. It was ordered fully loaded (leather, moonroof, sport group, convenience group, cage and cover). The DORA was accepted by Ford on 7/6/00. As of Friday 7/28/00 it is still listed as UNSCHEDULED. It does not indicate any material holds because the order is still waiting just to be sent to the factory. I ordered my ST through the Fleet dealer at the largest volume dealer in Houston. Hopefully, I will get some news soon. I am getting tired of bugging my dealer.

Has anyone else had any problems ordering a cargo cage? I ordered mine on May 31st and the dealer STILL has not received it!!! I was told that it was on back order well over a month ago. Does anyone have any information about the cargo cage and know if it it still on back order? Thanks!

I ordered a Sport Trac on 5 june exactly 8 weeks ago with mostly standard equipment including tan leather seats, white exterior, 6cd radio, conv. group, leather group and cargo cage. Thus far I have no info at all like vin or build date .My dealer really doesn't seem to care as he seems to me to give me a lot of double talk. He said today that job 2 didn't really start till after 11 Sept.I find it strange that I watched 3 Nationally televised commercials on monday night football specifically for the Sport Trac in the first quarter and I can't even get a build date on one I ordered 2 months ago.Any advice or numbers I can call would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks A Lot, Mel

I have a 98 Explorer Sport and it is very bouncy. On rough surfaces it will give you whiplash.I love the Sportrac's looks and versatility but I don't want another bucking bronco ride.Whar's it like? Some observations
about options.I love the door keypad, the overhead
console with compass and outside temperature,
    the 6 disc changer,the lumbar support,the 6 way
power seat.I wasted money on leather, rear stereo
controls, and rear a/c since nobody ever sits
there. The power moonroof is nice only when it's
cloudy and not on the freeway.Sunburn/Noise.

I ordered my ST on May 23 I got my build date on July 7, it was July 31 then was moved ahead to July 24. I am now waiting for delivery. Have you called the Ford customer service number for information? They have kept me better informed than my dealer. You just need your order number.
Don't believe everything your dealer tells you.
  • mkazarian1mkazarian1 Member Posts: 17
I ordered my ST on June 6, I have a vin # and a build date of August 8 and a delivery date to dealer on August 21-28. I don't have much faith in the owner connection line as they tend to side with the dealer. They do know more then the dealer does, I have to admit. Sometimes, I think the dealer just wants to make a sale and just leave it at that. Good luck on your vehicle, Merl.
  • tractiontraction Member Posts: 141
The ST has a lot longer wheelbase than the Sport model which helps with the ride. I find the ride of the ST great for a truck. If you want a car like ride then you might not like it...get the Escape. Eveything I have read about the ST says it has a better ride than the regular 5 door Explorer. I would agree.

you still out there greenwade? Your ST should be in the process of being built as we speak. (i am the fellow estate green fully loaded 4x4) I stopped by my dealer on Saturday and chatted with the sales manager. I caught him off guard by just showing up. He gave me a printout of my ST and options and the build date was still 8/7. I was happy that I got to see an estate green while there though! It was stripped down, as I ordered it with all, but the color is so super sharp. That ST brochure does not represent estate green correctly. Definitely should get some people looking at that color combo when driving it around!
Has anyone noticed that the ST brochures at virtually non existent at the dealers recently? I was on a trip in PA a couple of weeks back and we stopped at 4 dealers and none had the brochures. Trying to show the family my new toy and I left my brochure at home. Oh well, they will just have to see it in person soon.
I am so anxious for my new ST!!!!!!
    Just a few more weeks!

Brought my ST into service for shimmy in rear end. They have had it for 3 days not counting Sunday and they told me that the rear tires are slipping as much as 180 degrees from balance point. They are waiting to hear from Ford as to what to do. Any suggestions or ideas other than the obvious ( new tires and wheels ) would be appreciated. Thanks AL
