    1975 Chrysler Town and Country?
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
Close! I believe it's a 1974 Chrysler Town & Country since the '75 did NOT
    have wing windows.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
According to HMN you're both a little off, it's a 1977 Chrysler Town & Country
    that has never been registered!

Uh, some DKW / Auto Union model (of the early Fifties we know what Century); or, if not, that van is disguised that way.

    Regards,
    Jose
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Jose is correct. DKW presaged the modern Minivan by introducing the front-wheel drive DKW Schnellaster in 1949. It stayed in production until 1962!

Kind of a neat little thing IMO>

OK, now I'm really confused. So in '74 The Chrysler Town & Country came with wing windows, in '75 it did not, and in '77 some came with and some without????? :confuse:
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,135
Yeah, confusing, I found pic of '77s both with and without the wing windows. Odd.

Late 80's Subaru XT. Isn't this the one with the weird dashboard??
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
As my Subaru mechanic once told me: "no, don't bring one of those here. I don't work on cars with landing pods".
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Actually, it's simply called a Jeep Forward Control van - one of only three made. I thought the Jeep Forward Control trucks were kind of neat. I'm surprised this Jeep van never made it into production. We could've had the minivan 25 years earlier. I can't see how it couldn't have competed with the VW Bus and the Ford Econoline.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Probably non-competitive because they were ungodly crude vehicles....they drove like farm equipment.

Can't say the VW van was "sophisticated" but it had very nice fit and finish inside and out. You could slaughter a hog in a 50s Jeep and probably not have to clean up much afterwards. Econolines were the first "serious" vans, in that you could actually fill them up without blowing up the van's engine.

Looks like a 1960 Studebaker Lark. Can't quite see if it's
a VI or a VIII. When I was a kid my neighbor had a '60
Lark VIII wagon-black with red leather interior and a giant
whip antenna (he was one of the first into CB radio). I lusted
after that car! Then to make it worse he got a matching Studebaker
    pickup truck!

Very Kit Car looking....I'd check for two VW tailpipes out the back.

Yup, it's a 1960 Studebaker Lark VI. I don't know what the significance of the Roman numerals are. Anyone?

Ah, the Pontiac Sprint OHC 6. Once again, a GM venture that was a great idea but not fully developed, and then abandoned, just in time to miss the coming gas crunch and need for more economical engines.

The engine had its faults but today they can be rectified by restorers.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Right Shifty, the SOHC six was fitted to Firebird and Tempest Sprints from about '67 to '69 IIRC.

And we're still running pushrods in the USA---maybe this Pontiac engine discouraged American car makers for another 20 years.

Dodge Colt Vista wagon; buiilt by Mitsubishi and sold from 1984-91. These cars had a 2.0 liter I-4 and were available with optional 4 wheel drive. This looks like one of the last models. From the low ride height, it is probably 2WD. Yes, as Fintail mentioned; they had a reputation for poor oil control. But I once cured one of them by adding a one pint mixture of equal quantities of a proven carbon solvent (Kano Labs' Kreen) and a colloidal graphite solution (Kano Labs Penephite) into the crankcase for about a hundred miles before an oil change. The oil consumption dropped by over 75% after that.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
I think those engines liked to burn oil as they aged. I remember my dad wanted to buy one of those when they first came out...my mother put her foot down almost as hard as when he wanted an AMC Eagle. But, she was OK with the cruddy S-10 Blazer :confuse: :shades:
  • omarmanomarman Member Posts: 2,702
    fezo and zaken1 are correct!

The site where I found that pic has it listed as the 1984 model Colt Vista Wagon. Another site claims it was badged as a Dodge or Plymouth - but didn't specify if that was for the entire production run.

Wonder what young new car buyers would think of that shape/package if offered today?

Well, the Mazda5 and Kia Rondo are sort of variants on the same concept, so my guess is that it would be a niche product rather than a volume seller. But I'd be seriously considering it myself.

The difference with the Colt Vista (and why it attracted my father) is that it offered 4WD. Another proto-crossover kind of rig maybe. Of course back then Honda and Toyota also offered 4WD wagons, before both companies turned beige.

Maybe after 1982 or so with those wheels, I think not an S4 as those wheels had more of a lip. But I could be wrong.

That's right Stephen, its a Standard Vanguard phase II - circa 1952/4.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
I think these are three Plymouths - left hand is 1961 (Fury?)

Middle is a circa 74 Duster, I think - in fact did they make something called a Gold Duster, because that's what it looks like on the front wing?

Nearest is Valiant and I would guess about 1962.

Is the lilac thing in the background a Studebaker of some sort - one of those Wagoneers or something that had the sliding rear roof?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Yep, the car on the left is a '61 Plymouth but I don't think it's a Fury, perhaps a Belvedere?

The Duster may well be a "Gold Duster" as you suggest, the lettering on the wing--'er fender-- would indicate.

I'm not sure the leftmost car is a Plymouth, isn't that a Dodge Lancer grille?
