I used to get 24 mpg driving highways at 80+ mph....the engine was replaced at 26,000 thousand miles (under warrenty, due to manufacturer problems) since then I average about 20mpg. The car now has about 96,000 miles.....
Dealers are marking prices for parts up a RIDICULOUS amount. My dealer told me the spark plugs were $13.25 each...I went to Pepboys and they said the OEM plugs in PLATINUM were only $1.55....I got the BOSCH plus 4 plugs for about $5.75 and replaced all the plugs and wires myself.... :P

I personally would suggest waiting for the all-new 2007 model (due sometime between April and early September of this year). It's a very highly-improved vehicle overall, being more safe, roomy, powerful, economical, agile, and refined than the 2001-06 models. With a significantly wider track, revised independent suspension, and standard stability control, the '07 will prove more forgiving at its handling limits. A stronger safety cage, head-protective side curtain airbags, and active-response head restraints will have your back if things really don't go according to plan. Both five- and seven-passenger models will be available.

Yeah, I'm predicting that the MSRPs will start a little over $22K and run all the way up to the $29K mark for a loaded, top-of-the-line AWD Limited. Not a huge gap between the current model, but, you're right about the incentives making the difference -- a significant one in this case.

In one service department, a posting stated they'd give $2000 ABOVE book value for the suv
In another dealership, I received a letter also offering generous money for the vehicle.
Is this real? Or is just a line of uknowwhat?
Letter states dealership in 'great need to acquire 100 pre-owned Hyundai's i order to fulfill special used vehicle requests...'
Real or hype? Do they simply get the money back by not dealing down on the new vehicle?
Is there something special about the 2003 santa fe that makes it desirable? Or do they just desire me to trade in for a new Hyundai?
The most interesting hook was when our Saturn was two years old. The dealership offered to let us trade in our car against a new one and keep the payments the same. In other words, we were paying $240 a month for our Saturn. We trade in the old one for a new one and walk away with a new car for the same $240 a month. The payment calendar would of course start over at the first month out of 60 months, but its an interesting hook. Never bothered to see if it was good deal or not - car ran (and runs) fine so no need to upgrade.
It's designed so that people can feel free to play with it. As you do so, you'll begin to figure out what's good for your driving style and what's not.

Can anyone tell me what major problems to expect with these and which reliability rating is more accurate (I haven't even gone to consumer reports yet). I have read reviews out my ying yang and still can't get a good feel for this cars reliability.
I MUST have a car that is reliable and requires few worries as I am a single parent who has to transport two kids, one who has a developmental disablity. Break downs are not acceptable

Have the dealer check the rear differential, I bet thats whats wrong. Mine failed, it had metal shavings in it and the gears were worn down. What I (and I bet you) are feeling is the gears in the rear differential slipping and then grabbing again when it hesitates.
I, like you, thought off the bat it was the transmission also. It seems it is a difficult part to get (took my dealer a week) and from what my mechanic brother in law tells me it is expensive job. I have no idea how much, mine is under warranty.
Bottom line is your dealer should have known to check it when you described your problem. Good luck.
