That is an old Greg Cardone line. It actually should be "let me show you how I can take you out of your old car and put you in a new one and keep your payments the same." At least you quickly picked up on cash down.
  • marsha7marsha7 Member Posts: 3,703
been able to pay cash for a new car, if I could bring a Cashier's Check I would obviously show my license as ID, but running a credit report when paying cash is totally unnecessary...

If I was a bad credit risk, with a score of 450, why would that matter if I brought a local Cashier Check from a local bankd where funds could be verified in 10 seconds???

What would a credit report tell than that was RELEVANT, except to invade my privacy???

The WORST statement that bugs me is when someone says, "what do you have to hide?"...simple...if credit is not needed, it really is none of your damn business what my credit is like...

Just because your questions may have answers does not mean that those answers are your business to know...

Now, if I am requesting credit, then my credit score is your business, but never on a cash sale...

Not wanting you to know some things does not mean I have something to hide, but, even if I did, it IS my personal business, not yours...unless I want credit, then my history is an open book...

Cashier's checks can easily be forged - not only must funds be verified, but the authenticity must also. Many times deals are done when the bank is not open. In the real world most of my customers understand that a few crooks have made life harder for the law abiding.

Let's say you are selling your own car and a stranger gives you a check on a Saturday night. Would you just give then the car?

Well, Health insurance reform is bollocks IMO.

It's simply never going to be free, one way or another it's got to be paid for and it costs a lot.... period.

IMO Socialized health care is nothing more than forcing the population to buy health insurance.

Well, it wasn't a Saturday night but two different dealers gave me their cars even though I was a stranger to them (see post 17899) and all I gave them was a piece of paper. One of those pieces of paper wasn't even good yet.

From this I have to assume dealers can do what ever they want with their cars.

Well seeing that I took out a 5 year note on my current daily drive and its 7 years old I would have to put 100% down to get my payments the same. ;)

It's Grant Cardone. Man you ARE getting old! I've seen him a couple of times and frankly I don't think he ever sold many cars. I do believe he's made his money putting these clinics on. Kind of like the movie Magnolia with Tom Cruise. Some of the "classic lines" like "Would you want 0 for your car if your payoff was 0" :confuse: Some of the lines these guys want us to use are really dumb!

Why do people get caught up in fees so much? it is the OTD price that matters.....

Because it's dishonest and disingenuous. They put ads in big letters with YOU PAY X, but really mean YOU PAY X+Y (and you give us 2000 cash or trade).

So many times we hear complaints from the people in business side about how they're all painted with that broad brush how the industry is so honest and straightforward as a whole with just a few. But any chance they get (the industry that means), like state laws that do not cap those fees, they elect in massive numbers to do exactly opposite from what they declare. Instead of coming straight and say You pay $Z they say/write you Pay $X and more honest ones list the fee here.. Others simply refer to it in very vague terms hoping it won't be noticed. So there is a the price appears to be lower than it really is and perhaps a few suckers/unsophisticated consumers who thought of getting competitor's car, will come in and take that. And sad part - it works; it it weren't they wouldn't do it. Apparently there is not enough of people who.

It all becomes cat and mouse game of obscuring the real price early in the game so you come in, commit your time and finally give up and pay whatever is handed. Seasoned buyer usually moves on or know how to account for that, but more casual buyers get caught in deals that are far worse than initially thought.

This has probably been asked here before but since I’m a relative newbie I’m sure you guys (biz and non-biz) won’t mind if I ask again. At least we’ll get another subject going here.

Does the car biz have the same untrusting attitude among buyers world wide or did this country invent the way it is here. Please tell me that we followed someone else’s lead; I’ll believe it, really. ;)

Believe me - US is very far from being untrusty and suspicious. In many countries you have to have five documents with red ink stamps (round stamps are always better than square) before you can do anything. We are just catching up with the rest, mostly thanks to Homeland Security concerns, partially due to "business practices" brought here by "latest arrivals" (I'm one of those arrivals, so I can say that).

No sense in ruining another day here with that stuff

Hee hee, how about something else then?

At the risk of the mods bringing out the Kirby again, I’ll ask a couple more questions:

Why does the parts department charge the sales department so much for accessories? ..

    and

How come Carmax can offer so much to buy a used car for cash (bank draft)?

After I agreed to terms on Saturday over the phone to buy a vehicle, I had a follow-up call to schedule an appointment to do the paper work. As we were winding up, I said I need to talk to you about some accessories and a trade. I could sense immediate tension and defensiveness over the phone. Hmmm, should I pull a tbaxxon? Nah, I won’t do this to the poor guy. While he was blubbering all these things about trade value and cost, I cut him off and said, this not a negotiation. I am going to give you some options if they will help you.

Firstly, I am going to buy accessories for around $1000. They are available from on-line parts departments of other dealers. I assume they make profit on them at they price they sell them at, so if you want to add them on at the same price and increase the overall ticket size, then go ahead. After checking, he couldn’t add them because the parts department charged them more than the online price. Also the service department charged the sales side more for installation, then if I brought the part in off the street and negotiated the installation directly with the service department. Seems to me the artificial transfer price between departments drives them to the wrong business decision. I can’t help but think overall for the dealer it would be better for them to sell and install the accessories. They should give the sales department more flexibility, at least as much as the online parts prices.

Secondly, on the trade, I said it’s not part of the purchase. I have a quote from Carmax. If you want to match the Carmax quote and you can make some money on the used car then, it’s your option if you want it. Either way, doesn’t matter to me. They couldn’t touch the Carmax quote even though it was the same make they sell.

On my last deal the salesman accompanied me to the bank for the cashiers check. At the dealership they still asked for my SS# and when I asked why, the ASM replied saying it was required under the Homeland security act. I refused and was told that I could give it directly to the F&I guy.

Funny thing is when I was in F&I and asked the guy what gives with the SS#, I was told that since my credit wouldn't be needed there was no need for my SS#. I brought up the fact that the ASM mentioned the Homeland security act and the F&I guy gave me a dumb look.

the last time I bought a car, I told the dealer he needs to pay me $500. He asks me why? I told him because he put his "Advertising and marketing" information on my car (dealer name sticker / license frame) and he is essentially renting space on my car!!
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Oh, I like that idea! I'll bet I'm a minority here, but....

First thing I do with a new car is pull all that dealer crap off. Screws up the appearance of the car.

Can't believe that when I was a kid the dealer would screw their ad right on your car. I remember my folks having an old Plymouth with that.

I think for the most part cars are bought and sold the way we do it here with the exception of a few countries. If I'm not mistaken the Japanese don't haggle. They have a salesperson come to their house with brochures and all the info and the customer then selects the car they want the salesperson brings the car over and they sign the papers. Done. :shades:

We just had a RAV4 repo'd from a bunch of crooks. Actually we had to find the car after reporting it to the cops. The buyer used a fictitious entity name. How it got past f$I I'll never know but eventually they were caught. We get a few of these clowns every year.

    Marsha,

Anytime someone wants to pay over $1500 in a check we run credit to see if they are credit worthy. Also as i am sure you know if they write a check for over $10,000 we need to report it. If it is a cahier check than everything will be fine as long as we verify the bank.
