Someone asked about detailing a car and removing cigeratte smoke order. You can't. It will be in the car forever!
You can mask it and remove a lot of it but every time the car sits in the sun or you turn on the fan, it'll be back.
There are three kinds of shoppers.
1. The ones who don't care. Good luck finding that person.
2. The ones who are "sensitive to cigarette odor"
3. The ones (like me) who just can't stand the smell and won't buy the car under any circumstances.
It KILLS the resale of a used car and it can't be removed.
Worse yet...DOGS! MUCH worse than cigarette smell.
Years ago, I had a lady trade in an Accord Wagon that she had used to carry around two smelly Bassett Hounds.
I could barely stand to park her trade afterwards. NOTHING helped! We ran it through the auction with the windows down but it still stunk!

I have some (honest, most of it still has color) myself and although Mrs. jmonroe is only a month younger than me she has NONE. You heard me, NONE. I have gone over this house with a fine tooth comb several times looking for the potion she must be using and I ain’t found nothin. Even spoke with her hair dresser once and she said,”it’s never been touched”.
Therefore, the only conclusion I’ve been able to gather from this is, 'I’m much easier to live with than she is'.
I better get out of here quick before she barges in and pulls out some of my good stuff.

One of the reasons I left UPS was that everyone above me in management started losing their hair very young from all the stress. My boss was only a couple years older then me and was already half bald and he wasn't as bad as most.
Now I think my wife is causing a receding hairline. :sick:
It's the same way with houses. I just depends on how often you wash your dog. Some friends of mine hardly ever give their dog a bath, and it reaks. So, their house, car, etc. smells.
Our dog gets a bath whenever she starts to smell even a little bit (and I mean with your nose right up to her fur). So, our house and cars smell clean, even to visitors without dogs.
Cigarettes always stink... dogs don't have to!

I just don't know why people have to cart their dog along wherever they go. They slobber up the windows, chew on the interiors and stink up the cars.
Of course, some people keep their dogs well groomed but some people don't and some breeds are just worse than others. Bassett Hounds are a good example of that!

We work in a bad neighborhood (it used to be MUCH worse) and our security detail are 2 Great Danes. They go back and forth to work with my Dad every day. The slobber and hair are one of the reasons my Dad leases.

Then again, I cleaned and conditioned the seats at least every 2 weeks. So that had something to do with it. And Ford leather is so cheap, it's pretty close to vinyl anyway.
Our new civic is posing more of a problem. Not with the smell, but his hair gets in the cloth seats (along with everything else). I swear these seats show dirt/lint/hair worse than a black suit. Looks like we'll have to get a rear seat cover.
As to why we cart him around: he loves riding in the car (he went on the road with me for 4 years when I was a trucker), we love having him around, and it's just a car. I'm fanatical about having a clean car, but spending an extra 10 minutes cleaning is not a big deal to me. And I keep a car long enough that even if it dropped 10% off the value of the car, it wouldn't make much difference.

As to house smoke, we have owned, lived in, and sold ten houses in 40 years of marriage with no complaints about cigarette smells. There is a trick to this: once a year we clean the carpets and drapes and furniture; when smoking in the house you run the air conditioning (even in winter) with a window opened in the room where you are smoking. There is also a great product called Air Fragrance that burns up to 8 hours and will destroy any trace of cooking or cigarette smells. There is one thing worse than dog or cigarette smells---garlic. Talk about a bad car or house smell!
What is this about gray hair and no hair? I got tired of combing from my left ear to the top of my head, and hair color looked like hair color. The day after I retired, I purchased an electric balding razor and got rid of it all. Talk about a sexy look. The wife loves it. No more standing in front of the mirror each morning with brush in one hand and hairspray in the other; no more pulling a sweater over my head and then fixing my five stands of hair; no more worries when I climb into a convertible. It's the only way to go.
Now quit complaining and get out there and sell those smokers' Hondas. My wife's "smoker" CRV was sold the day after the trade. Bite your lip and be nice to those people. But don't change. This site needs feisty critters like you.
As many of you may recall, two weeks ago I walked away from an '04 CPO BMW X3 2.5i with 31,800 miles, even though my local BMW dealer had just reduced the price by $4000, down to $24.9K. Although I thought I was ready to make that purchase, I wanted the dealership to lower the price, say, $300, after I caught some problems I thought should have been detected at the CPO Inspection. They refused to budge on the price, and I decided to walk and give it further consideration. Later that day, the car was sold to another customer -AFTER- repairs were made to the car.
Thanks to your responses, I learned a couple important points about myself that day. First of all, as Isell quickly surmised, I did not really want that car. The truth is, I wasn't all completely excited about that car. After purchasing 25 cars in my lifetime, one would think I would know these things!! But, I guess my emotions start messing with my sense of logic whenever I am about to make a $25K purchase!
rover: My wife and I actually like how these older X3's ride, in base form. We would never purchase one with the Sports Package, though.
nthe: You made a good point -- the defects might have occurred after the inspection. I can't say for sure..., but I don't think so. For instance, the odometer was still extremely close to the mileage indicated at Inspection.
But now, in complete retrospect, I feel extremely fortunate we walked away from that purchase!!
Why?
Because here, sitting in our garage, is a much better-equipped and more powerful X3, with 5000 fewer miles, for my wife! And she is happy!
I found an '04 X3 3.0i with only 26,400 miles, with a boatload of factory options (original sticker was over $44K). I found it by searching BMW dealers in Southern California, using BMW's web site. I purchased this one from Nick Alexander Imports in Los Angeles.
Without going into details, this one is equipped much better than the 2.5i we almost purchased two weeks ago. Also, I couldn't have asked for any BMW that was more completely up-to-date with all its maintenance. Both front and rear brakes, all 4 tires, and the front rotors were just recently replaced. The dealer also threw in a new set of floor mats (still in the carton), and he replaced a worn cargo floor cover in the back.
What caught my attention and caused me to ask "What's the catch?", is that the Used Car Manager's asking price was only $25.9K!
But wait -- there is more savings which I discovered during the purchase process! For instance, I paid only $55 Doc Fees instead of the $388 Fees charged by my local dealer. Also, I saved 2.5% in sales tax, because I don't live within the city limits, and I had it trucked here to the Phoenix area instead of driving it off the lot. And then there was a last-minute surprise! The Used Car Manager decided to eat the $250 truck charge! I don't know why. Maybe he liked me as a customer?
Hence, the final net price I paid was about $200 above the price I would have paid for that 2.5i two weeks ago.
The radical part of this story is that I purchased it sight-unseen.

Besides, I wasn't complaining, just answering a question and stating facts.
I suspect the leather color might have turned some potential customers away, but my wife and I find it "sporty". After treating with some cleaner and Lexol conditioner, it looks quite rich.
Another item that may have caused casual shoppers to walk away: This X3 still had a CPO sales sticker on the windshield indicating a $34,995 price -- even after the internet price dropped to $25,995.

Good luck with your new wheels, it sounds like you got a great price, now for the BUT. IIRC you live in the Phoenix area, Black car in that place, YOI. I've been there a few times (120 degrees one time) and the rentals I had were always light colored. I also noticed that people parked in the shade when they could, put a towel over the steering wheel, used a sun shade, etc.
However, as hot as it gets there, I don't think any color would really help, so you might as well buy what you like to look at.

As many of you may know, some of the European cars (BMW, VW, Audi, even MB) have offered their cheaper base models with "leatherette" (i.e., vinyl) seats here in the USA, instead of cloth seats. As a perfect example, the base model of VW's slick new Eos hard-top convertible comes only with black vinyl seats. Can you imagine how comfortable black vinyl seats might feel on a typical summer's day in Phoenix?? :sick:
By the way, I've never attempted to use clay bars before, but I'm going to try one on this X3 in just a few minutes. After that, I'll try Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax.
Hope I don't miss any good games today. On a side note, I was hoping to see some interesting developments in the National League this afternoon. But the way things are going thus far, it looks like the Padres will be all alone for the wild card spot, and the Phillies will win the NL East. (Darn, no interesting tie-breaker games!)

I don't think the IS350 is available in AWD; it's RWD only. Its was the best handling car at the Taste of Lexus event, but I guess not much competition at the event.
First class event by Lexus. They really put on a good show. The LS600h is kind of weird to drive. Lot's of go, but super quiet and floaty. For over $100K, I still think the Merc S is best in class. The LS460 was too floaty too, but talk about about a quiet comfy car. Perhaps the biggest disappointment was the SC430. An beautiful interior with top notch materials, but it drive like a boat with an anchor.
Mack, you would not want one of those IS350s. A couple hundred miles and everyone drives WOT and hard on brakes. I wonder who ends up with these cars?

Wish they hadn't changed the design of the CRV. I really liked the square lines. It was a great car and we enjoyed it. As long as I changed the timing belt, you could really put the miles on one with just regualr maintenance. The Pilot still looks nice. My sister has two---one for the business and one for herself. She had two Explorers and says that they don't compare to the comfort and ride of the Pilot. I traded our CRV for an Explorer, but we have enjoyed the Explorer---not one problem in 4 years. Now if I can just get rid of that Chrysler---worst car we've owned in 40 years. Still holding out for a convertible. Where we now live is perfect for convertibles.
