Auctions usually have cars sitting there few days before they are ran through the auction block. In some cases you can take them for a quick drive around the yard, or neighborhood.

Dealer auctions will have multiple lanes of cars going at the same time. There is usually a few lanes reserved for various types of late model vehicles, or brands, or ex leases from certain manufacturers, like Ford credit might have one lane reserved for all of it's lease returns and repos, and Chrysler credit might have another lane, and Hertz might have a third lane with all of it's ex rental cars.

Most of these sellers will have very accurate details about the cars such as accident histories, registration and title details, and where they're from, and so on.

If there are issues that are found afterwards, typically at the dealer during an inspection, the dealer has a day or two to bring the car back if there are issues that were not disclosed at the auction. In this case the auction might reverse the transaction, or put in a dispute between the seller and buyer, and work something out.

If a certain seller always has undisclosed issues with the cars they're selling at the auction, they might be fined, or banned altogether from the auction.

There are also separate lanes for misc. mix and match cars, beaters, and as-is vehicles. Most of these have no reserve and are sold on an as-is basis, but still have to have some sort of accurate representation with accident history and titles.

Because auction sellers are licensed, and have some sort of a good history or reputation among the people in the business, and many cars are somewhat guaranteed by the auction for a day or two, the purchasing dealers won't be test driving or inspecting them before the auction. They will do that after the auction and if issues arise they will take it up with the auction after the fact.

We can also bid online for cars running through the auction, and if they're from certain sellers we dealt with in the past who have a decent reputation, then 99.9% of the time the vehicles will be properly represented, and we don't even have to be there in person to see them before we bid on them.

I have always wonder if you have power windows and locks and your in your car with the doors locked and the windows closed and the battery dies what do you do?

You reach over to the door, and unlock the door with your index finger and thumb by pulling up on the door lock, or flicking it sideways if it's mounted by the door handle.

Where can you view these online auctions? Can the general public have a look at these cars even though they can`t bid as I assume you must be a licensed dealer.

But ,can you list some websites which have these auctions so that we can have a look and see how they are selling at the auction?

    Thanks.

A salesman would not make a call saying it was a survey. A salesman will contact the buyer after the sale to ensure the ownership experience is meeting expectations and to cement the relationship. Most manufactures will call then do a written survey later. They may use outside companies for all surveys, including the ones for dealer service on vehicles under warranty.

On my new car it drops flush with the top edge of the door so there is no grabbing it and unlocking the door.

General public doesn't have access to these auctions, even for just looking. You have to have a dealer's license, or if you know a dealer, you might be able to tag along with a visitor's pass. Same with internet access. Only those with auction accounts can log in and view the auction live as far as I know.

There are public car auctions that anyone can attend and look and hang out at, but they're not as big as dealer auctions.

EDIT: Go here, and you can look at their selling schedule, and what's being sold in general, but that's about it.

Sorta like window shopping an adult store when you were a kid.

I don't now about the relative sizes or offerings at the dealer only sales. A neighbor dabbles in cars and goes to some. BUT a Detroit auction advertises that public is welcome. I believe they also invite selling your own car there... They advertise on a weekly syndicated car repair program on the host Detroit station.

Dealerships will not give accurate quotes via email due to different variables involved mainly due to the fact they know you will shop their price.
If serious about purchasing a major purchase such as a car why not go to the dealership?? ya afraid?

I'm not speaking for explorer, but here's my take.

If I'm requesting an internet quote is because I know exactly what I want. Why drive to a dealership if I could save myself the time? My time has a value, and it's finite.

Why use up time doing leg work if you don't have to? Use technology to your advantage.

As for "Dealerships will not give an accurate quotes via email due to different variables involved mainly due to the fact they know you will shop their price" I think that's a stupid reason. Just wishing the internet to go away is not going to make it so.

If I send an email saying "I want car VIN xxxxx. Give me your OTD price. No trade involved, and I'm buying within 24 hours," a dealership would be stupid not to give me a price.

only registered buyers (dealer license required I am pretty sure) can get the online link to Manheim (the big one in the NE).

I have sat with a guy that was a dealer and looked at the sight. All the info on every car scheduled (including pics) is on the site. They also have an inspection report (by one of their guys) that is extrememly detialed, and lists everything needed, right down to the level of the gas guage and condition of the oil.

You can also watch the cars run live, and if you like something, it's just a point click ship away!

Very additive. Like crack for people with CCBS

In my neck of the woods there are 2 main car auctions. One is like Boom described, only open to those with a dealer license, the other is open.

The dealer only auction has the premium quality cars, the off lease, program, ex rentals etc. The public one has the repo, high milage, salvaged, gov't fleet sales and the odd private sale.

"I'm amazed that people still buy them with the doom and gloom spread by the media."

At my age, I don't care if they go out of business. I love the car. Besides, it was an '08 demo with 10k miles and I got a terrific deal on it.

I will tell you that the car has made an impression on at least one person. An attractive, recently divorced lady who lives down the street saw it parked in our drive with the top down. As she walked by with her dog in tow, she shouted to me to give her a ride in it. Before I could respond, my wife shouts back, "Honey, if you want to ride in it, just give me a call. I own 50% of it and a hundred percent of him." I just kept my mouth shut. After 42 years of marriage, I know when not to speak. :shades: ;):D

trying to stay slightly on topic, the salesguy should have gone over this with you!

ANyway, I lerned when I got my (since departed) Miata that you should store it with the top up. It keeps the material stretched out properly. Otherwise I think it was likely to get creases and/or shrink.

Plus it makes it too easy for any stray critters or bugs to get in!

A bit off topic but my mom used to keep ears of feed corn in her trunk (she put it out for the squirrels around her house, it kept them away from the bird feeders). Well one day she noticed kernels of corn under her floor mats. Found out later there was a vole living in her car eating the corn and storing kernels in various parts of the car.

J.....I saw a Genny V8 listed at Fitzgerald Auto for ~$38K as an internet price. I think it was in white. Not my cup 'o tea.

driver....I'm a few weeks shy of hitting the marinas. The "river rats" start cranking up around mid-April. I'll put a 4 sales sign up and park the Tahoe at a couple of the marinas then. If there are any people around who could to a "cash" deal in the $25K-$30K range, it would be some of those folks.

That said, their portfolios can't be immune to what we've all suffered. So, who knows? No harm in trying.

imid...I'm headed to Chicago next week for some business. I'll drive the 'Hoe and shop it at a few of those Hyundai/Acura places. See what they're thinking. Chitown has to be good for one more good snow before Spring weather hits.

Maybe do a cruise down by the Lake while I'm there around LSD and see if I get some nibbles.

Side note, hotel rates around Michigan Ave have really plummeted. That's a good thing!

LR, The real intent of my post will be explained by this little story below:
    ====================================================
A little boy went into a store, reached for a soda carton and pulled it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the carton so that he could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven digits. The store owner observed and listened to the conversation.

The boy asked, “Maam, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?”

The woman replied, “I already have someone to cut my lawn.”

“I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.” replied the boy.

The woman responded that she was very satisfied with the person who was presently cutting her lawn.

The little boy was even more perseverant and said, “I’ll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach, Florida.”

Again the woman answered in the negative.

With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver.

The store owner, who was listening to this conversation, walked over to the boy and said, “Son… I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job.”

The little boy replied, “No thanks, I was just checking my performance on the job I already have. I am the one who is working for the lady I was talking to!”

    Graphic-

While you are in Chicago, take the Tahoe to a Carmax dealership. They buy used cars and will even provide you a "free quote" which used to be good for 7 days, 500 miles. Just don't go on a weekend or it will take hours. Wednesday night - purrrfect. You can even test drive a car or two while you wait.

My experience with Carmax is I have always taken a car there prior to trading it in with the dealer. Most often, their "buy" offer is greater than the initial dealer offer, and it allows me to negotiate with the dealer with a real offer price rather than some guide or internet value.

If anything it will give you a good gauge of what someone will give you for the car.

Britney Spears had just bought her new car and decided to go shopping with her friend and rival, Christina Aguilera. A few hours later she came out and realizes she had locked her keys in the car, so they spent a few hours pacing around the car trying to figure out what to do.

Finally, Britney looked off into the distance and saw storm cloud. She turned to her friend and said," Quick, think of something because a storm is coming and I left the top open!"

richard....already got your answer. TL is an Acura.

Actually, the TSX is more of a glorified Honda Accord.

The TL is built on the same wheelbase. Interior is better in the TL but there are similarities with the Accord.

The big difference is in the drivetrain and engine (especially with the SH-AWD). Suspension is also upgraded.

In short, the TL is competing with the Infiniti G series, the BMW 3 series, and the Cadillac CTS.

The Genesis is a little different. It competes with larger lux sedans.....Infiniti M, Caddy STS, BMW 5, etc.

At least, that's my take on them.

As a side note, I read today where the Grand Marquis is listed by J.D. Powers as one of the most dependable cars in the country---along with the Buick and the Jag. Don't worry. I'm not going there again---at least not yet. :P  :shades: ;)

    Just read a good review on the Gennie, main points are;
Cost is $20,000 less than comparable V8s
    375 HP with V8, and 290 with a 6!
*Superb handling with 54/46 front to rear weight distribution
*Electronic Stability Control is standard and helps with handling
*Quiet ride due to stiffer and harder body structure
*by using high tensile steel in critical areas of the unibody, the Gennie has 12 to 14% higher dynamic torsional rigidity and a lower body structure weight than a BMW 5 series or Mercedes E-class, with a much larger cabin than both. Actually has more interior room than a BMW 7 Series.
*Suspension is five-link and is most sophisticated and refined on the market at any price
*Interior matches anyone, soft touch instrument panel, wood grain accents, Bluetooth etc., dash, door panels and console wraqpped in leather, heated and cooled drivers seat provide optimum driving pleasure,
*Ultra-violet reflective leather wrapped steering wheel - always cool to the touch
*Power rear sunshade, automkatic electronic parking brake (not sure what that does) and push button starter
*Gennie and Rolls Royce Phantom are the only cars to offer a Lexicon surround sound audio system with 12 channel dgital ampliphier and 17 speakers producing over 500 watts.
*Safety is as good as it gets with 8 airbags
*8 ultrasonic sensors on front and back bumpers and rear back-up camera - distance is indicated in-dash screen and warning tone is emitted
    *Electronic head restraint system

Hyundai says it's engineers benchmarked cars like Merc E-Class, Lexus GS when designing the Gen, although in the real world the people they want to attract are Chrysler 300 and Pontiac G8 buyers....and it sounds like they should have no problem.

richard.....a lot of people don't like the new Acura TL's styling. It seems like it's fairly polarizing. Personally, I do like it. But, I think I'm probably only among a handful that do.

My local Acura dealer at least admits that the new styling hasn't been well-received. And that, at least in part, that's why they're slow moving. Last time I talked to him, he said he had about 50 in stock....all colors, all options.

My guess.....there's probably around a $4K delta between the street price of an Accord V6 w/Navi, vs the street price of an Acura TL w/tech.

Having driven both the Genesis (V6) and the TL, they are two very different cars, even though they're equipped relatively the same. Street prices are about the same.

TL reminds me a bit of my current Accord.....only with a lot more of everything that makes the Accord so good. The TL is way faster, with sharper handling, quieter, more comfortable, etc.

The Genesis drives more like a lux sedan with some sporty pretenses. I'm thinking the V8 may close that gap a little bit. But, as mentioned, the local dealer knows we're about $2K-$2.5K apart on a transaction with trade. So, I don't expect him to do much in the way of finding a V8 for me to try. There's a bunch of them within a couple hundred miles of me (contrary to what the local dealer told me), though.

Depends on what I want, if I indeed pull the trigger.

May have to take a road trip.

    Richard,

Sorry for the delay in response, but it looks like a couple of guys answered for you.

No, you should not store your vehicle with the top down. It creates wrinkles and creases which are almost impossible to get out. On a more serious note, if you get moisture inside, mildew can form and destroy the top. That is why you definitely don't want to put the top down when it is wet.

    Hope that helps!

Does every deal have to be run through the SM or do you eventually "earn" some authority to do a deal.

And I don't mean Mr. customer comes in an offers MSRP, but are you ever given some sort of range to do you own deal without getting the SM to sign off?

    Just curious...
