I probably should have bought the 4 here where I live coz I dont tow, we have no hills, hardly go anywhere far away. I guess I just wanted to dump my 92 exploder--err I mean Explorer and the 6 cyl were not that much more than the 4's. If they had a red pearl in a 4 then I would have got it, but they were hard to come by.
Finally a red 6 came into one of the 4 dealers in my area and the next day an idigo blue came in. The following day I went in and Loved the blue and bought it, no test drive even. The red was sold by the way. My lander still had to be readied for me as it just came off the truck.
Anyway, it all depends on what you will do with the lander as far as needing a 4 or 6, both drive great. Still would like to get some fog lights to put in that WONT COST over a hundred bux!! Thats just ridiculous. Giving more time , there will be some add ons at a decent price..I forsee the back ashtry/compt area turned into a cup holder with some add on and maybe some kind of netting in the lower front area under the console to keep items from rolling out and under your brake pedal!

Any other SUV comparable to Highlander in terms of cost, safety and reliability, performance, looks? I've read many posts here, and I could use some knowledgable opinions. I haven't bought a new vehicle in 11 years...
As I stated in other posts, I got a 2002 6cyl OUT the DOOR for 27k, but it didnt have leather seats.
It had been 10 years for me since buying and its still a PAIN.lol As far as safety look at the hyundai santa fe, as far as reliabilty/performance TOYOTA all the way BABY (sorry, just saw the new Austin powers flick), cost maybe look at the mazda tribute, also ford and gm are offering zero apr for 60 months(wonder why, hmmmmmm. I test drove em all too and still bought the Highlander. By the way I own a 1988 celica and still runs like a champ. Do your research, take your time. I started 3 months ago, bought last week.
we want to know b4 buying.
I think ABS will fall out of favor when people start getting $800 bills or more fot master cylinders
Other than an ECU and its firmware, basically the same components we've been using very reliably for ABS for many years, the two added components are a yaw sensor and steering wheel position sensor, two components that have been around in the industry for many years now.
Hope you find the HL you want at a good price
Can you confirm that the pollen filter (the part number you listed in your post) fits in a '01 HL? I opened the glove box and removed the panel you mentioned. By doing so I can see the fan and there appears to be space above it. Does the filter slide right in?
The lack of a pollen filter is my #1 complaint about my HL. Both my son and I suffer from allergies. We found the pollen filter on our Subaru Forester helpful and really miss it on the HL. Several people have asked in this forum about adding filters on '01s but no one has ever answered before. A dealer I asked was no help (he didn't know if the filter could be added, but didn't think so). I can't believe it is as simple as purchasing the filter and slipping it in. Why doesn't Toyota advertise this fact? They would surely sell many thousands more $25 filters/year!
I don't know why Toyota wouldn't include the air filter on the 01's or even let owners know it was available. The filter I ordered and installed is a pleated paper one with a plastic flange. It seemed the correct size for the compartment but a bit loose since there was no way to really secure it in the compartment.Maybe I don't have a holder for the filter. Maybe wwest can check his RX (or someone with a HL 02) if it really is held in place or just sits unsecured.
Also it is possible that some HL's were not made with the filter compartment. The parts dept. checked my VIN # and said it did have it.
Thank you for that information. My '01 does not have a tray, but it appears that there may be plastic guides molded into the fan housing to hold it. Does the tray come completely out or is it attached to the housing? I hope all I need is the filter and the tray, but there may be more to it than that.
I need to find a friendly '02 owner who will let me take out his filter/tray and see if it slips into my '01 OK. Unfortunately, I only know of one other HL in my town, and it's an '01 also. Maybe I'll try the parts department at the dealer to see if they will help. The service department seemed to think the answer was to just trade for an '02, but I just casually asked so perhaps they didn't realize just how much I wanted it.
It sounds as if ekistic just has his filter loose in the compartment (no tray) and gets by with that. Perhaps a person could just glue foam strips on the sides to wedge it in more securely and get by with that (if a tray can't be easily added).
I guess the next question is just how well do these filters work? My allergist prescribed HEPA filters for my home and office, which help a lot. I would think that with positive pressure from the fan, with filtered air, they would work fine, and the one in my previos vehicle, a Subaru Forester, seemed to help.
If you want good pollen filtering then go to home depot and buy the largest 3M filtrete furnace filter you can, about $15. You can dismember this filter and then use the element to make about three, or at least two, T/L pollen filters. How much you "compress" the folds of the 3M filter determines (efficiency and lifetime) how many filters you are able to make from each.
I suspect the reason the T/L factory filter element isn't very efficient is because if it were it would need to be changed out every 5 to 8k miles.
The factor pollen filter in the Porsche 996 is very much like the 3M one, and lasts only up to 8k miles before it becomes so clogged it begins to restrict the airflow.
Has anyone had these problems?
Thanks,
Our Limited doesn't beep (other than the normal ones). I'd bring it to the dealer at quarter of or find the toy my kids left under the seat.
DETROIT, Aug 6 Reuters reported that Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled 154,593 of its 2001 and 2002 model year Highlander sport utility vehicles due to a fuel-vapor nozzle which could leak during a front-end collision.
Toyota discovered the problem nozzle during crash tests, said spokesman John Hanson. He said the automaker was unaware of any other instances where the nozzles leaked.
To fix the problem, dealers will rotate clamps on the nozzle about 90 degrees so they don't hit the underside of the vehicle body during a crash.
"All we're really doing is we are repositioning that nozzle. It's about a 20 minute or 30 minute fix. There are no parts that need to be replaced," Hanson said.

Someone else more recently said that they got a +$600 deal there so evidently the price came down a bit.
I generally keep my vehicles for a long time and I don't like to worry about big ticket repairs later on so got the Toyota 7Yr/100K Platinum warrantee. They gave the same price as http://www.toyotawarranty.com which was also mentioned here.
I did the order over the phone and did the paperwork when I picked it up. I had previously driven one but wanted to have my wife drive as well, but they didn't have any on the lot to try at all. This is a pretty large dealership and at the time I bought mine, they were moving fast.
There were a few hickups. They initially estimated a 4 week delivery but later called and said that it would be more like 10 weeks. It actually turned out to be 6 weeks. Also I had ordered floor mats and they weren't on mine so they stole them from another one and I paid for them.
What really gets me mad is that floor mats are not included. I didn't buy a stripped special order. Floor mats should be in one of those packages. I don't think they realize how much this gets people PO'd. I wouldn't notice or care much if this was part of the base price or part of a package and the price reflected it. It just seems they are rubbing your nose in it.
I got rid of a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee which was a lot of trouble; 3 sets of front rotors before 25K, 2 power window failures, rebuilt front trasfer case, rear brake problems, rear shocks failed twice before 15K, numerous recalls, 15 mpg with 6 cyl etc.
My initial reaction to the Highlander is that I mostly really like it. My wife also likes it and she hated the Jeep. I was looking for a quiet, reliable vehicle with resonable cargo space.
Mileage is about 20 overall and 23 on trips.
A few things I don't like but can live with or will be modify considering everything else is great:
The styling is pretty bland. If stying was a major factor to me I would have bought something else. I wish I could do a body transplant with the Jeep.
I don't like the passenger side seat. Someone else mentioned this. You feel like you're being thrown off the front. There is no incline in the seat cushion. If you tilt back the back rest and lean back it's not bad but it makes copiloting difficult. It doesn't bother my wife and I won't be riding there often so I can live with it.
The stereo is terrible. Even CDs sound like AM. What were they thinking of? My wife's 96 Camry is much better. I plan on replacing the speakers.
A couple of problems that I have that may just be defects but perhaps I can get some feedback to see if others have noticed them.
The seat belts are very tight. It feel like there is a boa constrictor in the belt. Is this a defect in mine? I find I have to hold it away with one hand and drive with the other, which isn't the safest way to drive. I'm considering using a clothes pin or something to hold it away. These belts are supposed to have a pretensioner for a crash so there is no need to have them tight all the time.
Anybody else get the same impression?
When I first start driving and go over even small bumps, there is a noise from the rear that sounds like a bad shock or suspension component loose. However, after I drive a short distance and go over a few more bumps, I don't notice this. Could this be the shocks "pumping up" or something?

But with the HL in the northeast you might find yourself missing the capability and versatility of the JGC's AWD/4WD system. There is a good description of what all is wrong with the HL and RX AWD system on the "what's wrong with Lexus" thread.
I don't remember what it cost at the time but my 92 LS had the same problem with the front passenger's seat and I went out and bought the driver's side seat mounting hardware and positioning assembly.
As you will find noted elsewhere replacing the speakers will yield the best overall results for audio upgrades, factory bean-counters want cheap speakers and mileage minded design engineers want light weight stuff.
You might also want to have a look at the most recent posts regarding the RX300 pollen filter over at clublexus.com
To enhance the appearance and the handling I upgraded my 01 AWD RX to 17X8 wheels and tires, Michelin CT's, using 1.2" spacers all around since the clearance between the standard tire and rear strut is so tight that a wheel upgrade is impossible absent spacers (or a custom wheel offset) and tire chains can NEVER be used on the rear.
And in the case of an SUV there is a logical explanation for the floor mats as an add-on. Many people op for the rubber aftermarket "mats". That doesn't excuse T/L from the fact they do the very same thing throughout the product lines.
promotional/freebie stopwatch in the glove compartment. And it was set to beep every hour.
The confusing part was that it sounded like it came
from the car!

Hope this helps for all the owners of 01 models that didn't have one.
Has anyone had any luck getting their dealer to program any of the features mentioned in the following link? Thanks!
mcmatt Jun 4, 2002 12:39am
Yes I was successful in having a Toyota dealership re-program the settings. I purchased the Steel Horse tube steps from them and asked them to make the following modifications while they had the HL.
Change Auto Headlights on to most sensitive setting.
Change All door unlock with 1 push of button
Change auto re-lock from 30 seconds to 60 seconds.
They made these changes without charge.
FYI, don't make the mistake I did. When I picked up my HL, I was testing the new settings and pressed the unlock button once, it only beeped twice. I locked it back, pressed the unlocked twice and it beeped 4 times. I am thinking, they didn't even change it!! Fortunately, I though to actually CHECK the doors after pressing it once and it beeped twice and they were all unlocked.
Speakers are on the way - once I pay off my ridiculous credit card bill.
1. Just about over all the ribbing we took for buying our first "foreign" car.
2. We still get more looks and have more fun driving our '99 Cobra convertible.
3. First oil change was breeze. No need to jack up vehicle, filter easily accessed from above.
4. It's a real chore for the A/C to cool down that much interior space.
5. Learned how to adjust all windows to avoid the dreaded noise with rear windows down only.
6. Contrary to many posts, the seats are great and the sound system is fine for us.
7. Only defect so far is a problem with the driver's door handle operating mechanism.
8. Really, really happy we bought a V6 rather than the 4 cylinder we originally ordered.
9. Our daughters never beg to borrow it, only the Cobra.
10. We love it and would recommend one to anyone looking for an SUV or wagon!
IS PASSIVE ARMING WHEN YOU WALK AWAY FROM THE CAR AND DIDN'T LOCK THE DOORS, THE ALARM IS ARMED ANYWAY? THAT'S WHAT WAS IN MY OTHER CAR.
ALSO, WHAT IS THE 30 SECOND AUTOMATIC LOCK FUNCTION WHICH IS THE FACTORY DEFAULT SETTING. ON OUR 2002 LTD HL, THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE DOORS TO LOCK WHEN DRIVING AWAY, AFTER GETTING IN, IS TO MANUALLY LOCK THE DOOR. IS THE DOOR SUPPOSED TO LOCK AUTOMATICALLY? THANKS.
If you unlock the vehicle with the remote and don't open a door, it will relock in 30 sec.
You can turn off the "beeping" by inserting the key in the ignition, removing it, inserting it again and turn on, wait 10 seconds, then push lock, unlock, or panic twice. If you hear two beeps, you have toggled the beeping on or off.
Car will beep at you for 10 seconds if trying to lock with a door ajar.
When unlocking, the tail lights will stay on for 2 sec. if the alarm was tripped.
