Is that yours jimxo? Can you take a side shot of it and post it?

Well, my point was that having a chain would be less costly as well as saving gas in the 4 banger.
I probably should have bought the 4 here where I live coz I dont tow, we have no hills, hardly go anywhere far away. I guess I just wanted to dump my 92 exploder--err I mean Explorer and the 6 cyl were not that much more than the 4's. If they had a red pearl in a 4 then I would have got it, but they were hard to come by.
Finally a red 6 came into one of the 4 dealers in my area and the next day an idigo blue came in. The following day I went in and Loved the blue and bought it, no test drive even. The red was sold by the way. My lander still had to be readied for me as it just came off the truck.
Anyway, it all depends on what you will do with the lander as far as needing a 4 or 6, both drive great. Still would like to get some fog lights to put in that WONT COST over a hundred bux!! Thats just ridiculous. Giving more time , there will be some add ons at a decent price..I forsee the back ashtry/compt area turned into a cup holder with some add on and maybe some kind of netting in the lower front area under the console to keep items from rolling out and under your brake pedal!

I found this link at the 4RUNNER discussion, the 2003 will be out in September.

So, should we post a link of a Highlander in the 4Runner board? LOL

Hi-new poster here, but glad I found ya'll. Am interested in buying a Highlander, and can buy a 2001 fully loaded, with 16,000 mi. for 25,000. Is this a good deal, or can I push for a new one, around same price, not "quite" as loaded (but do want leather, 4 cyl. will do)? I'm from Georgia, and will be buying within the next month. And, what incentives are there, if any?

Any other SUV comparable to Highlander in terms of cost, safety and reliability, performance, looks? I've read many posts here, and I could use some knowledgable opinions. I haven't bought a new vehicle in 11 years...
  • jaxbossjaxboss Member Posts: 13
I dont know where in GA you are, but Im in Jax Fl and if your close then check out the 4 dealers we have here, otherwise use toyotas main site and enter ur zip to find some close dealers and search their inventory of what they have and whats due in. As far as a 4 cyl with leather I have seen them although they are quite rare indeed. I for one would get a newer one for the same price, Im sure you could do it.
As I stated in other posts, I got a 2002 6cyl OUT the DOOR for 27k, but it didnt have leather seats.
It had been 10 years for me since buying and its still a PAIN.lol As far as safety look at the hyundai santa fe, as far as reliabilty/performance TOYOTA all the way BABY (sorry, just saw the new Austin powers flick), cost maybe look at the mazda tribute, also ford and gm are offering zero apr for 60 months(wonder why, hmmmmmm. I test drove em all too and still bought the Highlander. By the way I own a 1988 celica and still runs like a champ. Do your research, take your time. I started 3 months ago, bought last week.
  • bigorange30bigorange30 Member Posts: 1,091
I would get a new one. You don't know how it was treated in the first 16,000 miles. You also get to drive it one less year under warranty. A new one will be about the same price. You should also take a look at the Pathfinder. The Pilot is another option but Honda is charging and getting more than MSRP for them right now because they're new.
  • dougweaverdougweaver Member Posts: 48
Yes gas is pretty cheap right now. But with the situation in the Mid-East things could change real fast. Especially with Saddam (So Damn Insane) still around. I would almost bet that we will see 2 to 3 dollar gas in the next few years. I sure hope not ... but definately a possibility. dpw

I have scoured the internet and can't find any information on the changes Toyota has made for 2003. Does anyone have any information on what changes, if any, Toyota has made for 2003 in the Highlander. I know quite a few guys who are trying to decide whether to buy a 2002 or wait for the 2003 model. Also, do you recommend regular or premium for the V6. Thanks.
  • dougweaverdougweaver Member Posts: 48
Is the Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) a good option for a 4 Cyl FWD? And can you get the JBL Premium stereo added to the 4 Cyl? When I do the "build your own" on the Toyota website it doesn't give me that option. And for you that have the JBL stereo ... how is it? Is it worth the money? Thanks for the info. dpw

Vehicle Stabilty Control, is a damn good option for ANY vehicle, even a Porsche (PSM).
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I got out of sales last year, but if memory serves me, you can't get VSC in a 4 cylinder can you?
  • wainwain Member Posts: 479
and how complex is it and expensive to repair?
we want to know b4 buying.

I think ABS will fall out of favor when people start getting $800 bills or more fot master cylinders
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
Some one tell me if I'm wrong but I don't think ABS really has anything to do with the master cylinder, I think the master cylinder remains intact. What is added is an electrically driven hydraulic pump to provide the "make-up" pressure to re-apply the brakes as ABS releases them.

Other than an ECU and its firmware, basically the same components we've been using very reliably for ABS for many years, the two added components are a yaw sensor and steering wheel position sensor, two components that have been around in the industry for many years now.

Yes, I got my HL in Richmond and I have a silver non-limited. I didn't want a moonroof or leather and the limited models were all loaded. I had actually gone to another dealer to see the new Camry and saw my first HL there. I knew as soon as I drove it that it was right for me. That dealer wasn't dealing (the one I drove was the only HL they had) so I figured I'd wait until demand died down a bit. Things worked out a bit differently and within 2 weeks I was HL'ing!

Hope you find the HL you want at a good price
  • dougweaverdougweaver Member Posts: 48
We are in no rush since we have our Rodeo leased until February so we have plenty of time. So I am going to try to get the best deal I can find. Can anyone tell me ... If you do a special order, to get exactly what you want, and wait 3 or 4 months for delivery, can you get a good deal? (Say $500 to $800 over invoice) ... or is the only way to get that good of a deal is to buy what the dealers have easy access to? Either in thier stock or in the region. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks dpw

Can it be that Toyota has been that good at keeping the changes for 2003 under wraps? Does anyone have an idea what the changes for 2003 will be?

For those of us who own 2001 HL's is seems Toyota forgot to include the air refiner element (Part No 87139-48020). One can check if the filter is installed by pressing the glove box sides (in the open position and releasing it) and looking behind it. A small panel can be removed and pulled down so you can look into the place where the filter is supposed to be. I purchased the filter for about $ 25. Does anyone know if the filter fits with flange up or down? Thanks.
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
assuming the HL has the same filter tray/holder as the RX the "flange" goes down and "locks" into place in the bottom of the holder.
  • cheezheadngacheezheadnga Member Posts: 2
I'm in Kennesaw, GA and bought a 2002 Highland V6 Limited for $26,900 brand new in March. The Atlanta Journal Constitution has been advertising some 2002 year end clearance deals for a much better price than what you would be paying for the used one!

    ekistic..
Can you confirm that the pollen filter (the part number you listed in your post) fits in a '01 HL? I opened the glove box and removed the panel you mentioned. By doing so I can see the fan and there appears to be space above it. Does the filter slide right in?

The lack of a pollen filter is my #1 complaint about my HL. Both my son and I suffer from allergies. We found the pollen filter on our Subaru Forester helpful and really miss it on the HL. Several people have asked in this forum about adding filters on '01s but no one has ever answered before. A dealer I asked was no help (he didn't know if the filter could be added, but didn't think so). I can't believe it is as simple as purchasing the filter and slipping it in. Why doesn't Toyota advertise this fact? They would surely sell many thousands more $25 filters/year!
  • ekisticekistic Member Posts: 7
    tfuzz,
I don't know why Toyota wouldn't include the air filter on the 01's or even let owners know it was available. The filter I ordered and installed is a pleated paper one with a plastic flange. It seemed the correct size for the compartment but a bit loose since there was no way to really secure it in the compartment.Maybe I don't have a holder for the filter. Maybe wwest can check his RX (or someone with a HL 02) if it really is held in place or just sits unsecured.
Also it is possible that some HL's were not made with the filter compartment. The parts dept. checked my VIN # and said it did have it.
  • bill01923bill01923 Member Posts: 57
We have a 2002 HL. The filter sits in a filter tray. You remove the cover and the tray slides out. The V shaped side of the filter faces up. I'm not sure of the part numbers but a Toyota dealer should be able to give them to to you.
  • tfuzztfuzz Member Posts: 93
    bill01923..
Thank you for that information. My '01 does not have a tray, but it appears that there may be plastic guides molded into the fan housing to hold it. Does the tray come completely out or is it attached to the housing? I hope all I need is the filter and the tray, but there may be more to it than that.

I need to find a friendly '02 owner who will let me take out his filter/tray and see if it slips into my '01 OK. Unfortunately, I only know of one other HL in my town, and it's an '01 also. Maybe I'll try the parts department at the dealer to see if they will help. The service department seemed to think the answer was to just trade for an '02, but I just casually asked so perhaps they didn't realize just how much I wanted it.

It sounds as if ekistic just has his filter loose in the compartment (no tray) and gets by with that. Perhaps a person could just glue foam strips on the sides to wedge it in more securely and get by with that (if a tray can't be easily added).

I guess the next question is just how well do these filters work? My allergist prescribed HEPA filters for my home and office, which help a lot. I would think that with positive pressure from the fan, with filtered air, they would work fine, and the one in my previos vehicle, a Subaru Forester, seemed to help.
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
I can't imagine that the RX pollen filter (~$37)and holder ($??) doesn't fit the HL, any HL.

If you want good pollen filtering then go to home depot and buy the largest 3M filtrete furnace filter you can, about $15. You can dismember this filter and then use the element to make about three, or at least two, T/L pollen filters. How much you "compress" the folds of the 3M filter determines (efficiency and lifetime) how many filters you are able to make from each.

I suspect the reason the T/L factory filter element isn't very efficient is because if it were it would need to be changed out every 5 to 8k miles.

The factor pollen filter in the Porsche 996 is very much like the 3M one, and lasts only up to 8k miles before it becomes so clogged it begins to restrict the airflow.

I oun a '01 Unlimited. I have had a problem recently with the fan for the heating and A/C not working. When it was working it was very noisy.

    Has anyone had these problems?

    Thanks,

My 2002 Highlander V6 (non-limited) beeps every 2 minutes after the hour. I can't find anything about it in the manual Anyone knows what's going on?
  • bill01923bill01923 Member Posts: 57
I haven't changed the filter yet but the image in the manual looks like the tray comes right out.

Our Limited doesn't beep (other than the normal ones). I'd bring it to the dealer at quarter of or find the toy my kids left under the seat.
  • cmcardlecmcardle Member Posts: 71
You can set a digital watch to beep on the hour. Maybe a child dropped one in that space where the two seat belt buckles are in the back... that's a good sized hole.

I just bought a 2001 Highlander, V6, 4wd, and am very happy with it, but have noticed that at about 1200-1500 rpm, with the AC on, there is a whine from the engine. If I turn the AC off, the whine goes away. It also goes away as soon as I accelerate or decelerate. I asked the service people about it. They didn't know what it was, so they called tech support. Supposedly, tech support told them, there is no fix yet. Has anyone else noticed this problem?
  • scannerscanner Member Posts: 295
and no problems to speak of with the HL.
  • scannerscanner Member Posts: 295
I just completed scanning through the 3000+ messages that I missed since my last visit and was wondering if anyone has figured a way to program the doors to automatically lock and the alarm to automatically arm? I noticed my question has been asked several times since my last visit, but I didn't read where anyone actually figured out a way to program the alarm and door locks for the previous features. Hopefully I missed it.

fyi, I heard on the news today that the 2001 and 2002 Highlanders are being recalled because the fuel system might leak after an accident.
  • aortaaorta Member Posts: 14
    Toyota recalls 154,000 Highlander SUVs

DETROIT, Aug 6 Reuters reported that Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled 154,593 of its 2001 and 2002 model year Highlander sport utility vehicles due to a fuel-vapor nozzle which could leak during a front-end collision.

Toyota discovered the problem nozzle during crash tests, said spokesman John Hanson. He said the automaker was unaware of any other instances where the nozzles leaked.

To fix the problem, dealers will rotate clamps on the nozzle about 90 degrees so they don't hit the underside of the vehicle body during a crash.

"All we're really doing is we are repositioning that nozzle. It's about a 20 minute or 30 minute fix. There are no parts that need to be replaced," Hanson said.

I bought a 2002 Highlander about two months ago from Autofair Toyota in Manchester NH. I would highly recommend them if you are in the Northeast. I went to them because of a previous recommendation on this message board. I live in Massachusetts and shopped around at the local dealerships as well as other pre-arranged price places like Costco, Powershopper, Autobytel, etc. and they were $300-$1000+ cheaper. I got a non-limited, no moon roof with all the standard options that they put in them.

    It's a silver V6 AWD.

    Appearance

    Convenience

    Daytime Lights

    Heated Mirrors

    Preferred

    Roof Rack

    Tow Hitch

    Tow Prep

Invoice = 26,631 (matched Edmunds exactly)

    Advertising = 371

    Title/prep = 109

                  + $750 over

Someone else more recently said that they got a +$600 deal there so evidently the price came down a bit.

I generally keep my vehicles for a long time and I don't like to worry about big ticket repairs later on so got the Toyota 7Yr/100K Platinum warrantee. They gave the same price as http://www.toyotawarranty.com which was also mentioned here.

I did the order over the phone and did the paperwork when I picked it up. I had previously driven one but wanted to have my wife drive as well, but they didn't have any on the lot to try at all. This is a pretty large dealership and at the time I bought mine, they were moving fast.

There were a few hickups. They initially estimated a 4 week delivery but later called and said that it would be more like 10 weeks. It actually turned out to be 6 weeks. Also I had ordered floor mats and they weren't on mine so they stole them from another one and I paid for them.

What really gets me mad is that floor mats are not included. I didn't buy a stripped special order. Floor mats should be in one of those packages. I don't think they realize how much this gets people PO'd. I wouldn't notice or care much if this was part of the base price or part of a package and the price reflected it. It just seems they are rubbing your nose in it.

I got rid of a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee which was a lot of trouble; 3 sets of front rotors before 25K, 2 power window failures, rebuilt front trasfer case, rear brake problems, rear shocks failed twice before 15K, numerous recalls, 15 mpg with 6 cyl etc.

My initial reaction to the Highlander is that I mostly really like it. My wife also likes it and she hated the Jeep. I was looking for a quiet, reliable vehicle with resonable cargo space.

Mileage is about 20 overall and 23 on trips.

A few things I don't like but can live with or will be modify considering everything else is great:

The styling is pretty bland. If stying was a major factor to me I would have bought something else. I wish I could do a body transplant with the Jeep.

I don't like the passenger side seat. Someone else mentioned this. You feel like you're being thrown off the front. There is no incline in the seat cushion. If you tilt back the back rest and lean back it's not bad but it makes copiloting difficult. It doesn't bother my wife and I won't be riding there often so I can live with it.

The stereo is terrible. Even CDs sound like AM. What were they thinking of? My wife's 96 Camry is much better. I plan on replacing the speakers.

A couple of problems that I have that may just be defects but perhaps I can get some feedback to see if others have noticed them.

The seat belts are very tight. It feel like there is a boa constrictor in the belt. Is this a defect in mine? I find I have to hold it away with one hand and drive with the other, which isn't the safest way to drive. I'm considering using a clothes pin or something to hold it away. These belts are supposed to have a pretensioner for a crash so there is no need to have them tight all the time.

Anybody else get the same impression?

When I first start driving and go over even small bumps, there is a noise from the rear that sounds like a bad shock or suspension component loose. However, after I drive a short distance and go over a few more bumps, I don't notice this. Could this be the shocks "pumping up" or something?

You did well in dumping the JGC, even the best of those have rather shoddy components, u-joints at the front instead of CV joints, etc.

But with the HL in the northeast you might find yourself missing the capability and versatility of the JGC's AWD/4WD system. There is a good description of what all is wrong with the HL and RX AWD system on the "what's wrong with Lexus" thread.

I don't remember what it cost at the time but my 92 LS had the same problem with the front passenger's seat and I went out and bought the driver's side seat mounting hardware and positioning assembly.

As you will find noted elsewhere replacing the speakers will yield the best overall results for audio upgrades, factory bean-counters want cheap speakers and mileage minded design engineers want light weight stuff.

You might also want to have a look at the most recent posts regarding the RX300 pollen filter over at clublexus.com

To enhance the appearance and the handling I upgraded my 01 AWD RX to 17X8 wheels and tires, Michelin CT's, using 1.2" spacers all around since the clearance between the standard tire and rear strut is so tight that a wheel upgrade is impossible absent spacers (or a custom wheel offset) and tire chains can NEVER be used on the rear.

And in the case of an SUV there is a logical explanation for the floor mats as an add-on. Many people op for the rubber aftermarket "mats". That doesn't excuse T/L from the fact they do the very same thing throughout the product lines.
  • zm101zm101 Member Posts: 6
Yes, that's what happed. Someone left a
promotional/freebie stopwatch in the glove compartment. And it was set to beep every hour.
The confusing part was that it sounded like it came
    from the car!

I saw several articles on replacing the factory speakers - Very Helpful. Did any of these installs have a Side Airbag ? Are there any conflicts with Side Air Bags and front speakers.

    Thanks !
  • b717b717 Member Posts: 38
The side air bags are mounted in the seat, not the door, have not heard of any conflict between systems.
  • gwleonggwleong Member Posts: 36
There have been alot of postings regarding the substandard sound systems in all H/L's. I was wondering if those who replaced their systems would post exactly what they did: Replace speakers only, headunit only, or all of the above. I would like to know what models/brands were installed as it looks like I will be going this route. I think this would benefit alot of readers of this discussion.

    Thanks in advance!

A follow-up on the correct part No. for the air filter refiner element is # 88508-48020. This includes the baffle filter and the holder (which now fits in the slot above the fan correctly) The cost for this is around $26. (incl. shipping).
Hope this helps for all the owners of 01 models that didn't have one.

    Scanner,

Yes I was successful in having a Toyota dealership re-program the settings. I purchased the Steel Horse tube steps from them and asked them to make the following modifications while they had the HL.

Change Auto Headlights on to most sensitive setting.

Change All door unlock with 1 push of button

Change auto re-lock from 30 seconds to 60 seconds.

They made these changes without charge.

FYI, don't make the mistake I did. When I picked up my HL, I was testing the new settings and pressed the unlock button once, it only beeped twice. I locked it back, pressed the unlocked twice and it beeped 4 times. I am thinking, they didn't even change it!! Fortunately, I though to actually CHECK the doors after pressing it once and it beeped twice and they were all unlocked.

I gave mine the Alpine treatment! In-dash DVD screen, Navigation, and CD changer. The sound is definitely improved - the new head unit has a built-in amp. I still haven't gotten the DVD player....but I don't think I'd use it anyway.

Speakers are on the way - once I pay off my ridiculous credit card bill.

OK scanner, just for fun a top ten posting here on our 2WD V6 HL...

    1. Just about over all the ribbing we took for buying our first "foreign" car.
    2. We still get more looks and have more fun driving our '99 Cobra convertible.
    3. First oil change was breeze. No need to jack up vehicle, filter easily accessed from above.
    4. It's a real chore for the A/C to cool down that much interior space.
    5. Learned how to adjust all windows to avoid the dreaded noise with rear windows down only.
    6. Contrary to many posts, the seats are great and the sound system is fine for us.
    7. Only defect so far is a problem with the driver's door handle operating mechanism.
    8. Really, really happy we bought a V6 rather than the 4 cylinder we originally ordered.
    9. Our daughters never beg to borrow it, only the Cobra.
    10. We love it and would recommend one to anyone looking for an SUV or wagon!

TO MCMATT, THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION.

IS PASSIVE ARMING WHEN YOU WALK AWAY FROM THE CAR AND DIDN'T LOCK THE DOORS, THE ALARM IS ARMED ANYWAY? THAT'S WHAT WAS IN MY OTHER CAR.

ALSO, WHAT IS THE 30 SECOND AUTOMATIC LOCK FUNCTION WHICH IS THE FACTORY DEFAULT SETTING. ON OUR 2002 LTD HL, THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE DOORS TO LOCK WHEN DRIVING AWAY, AFTER GETTING IN, IS TO MANUALLY LOCK THE DOOR. IS THE DOOR SUPPOSED TO LOCK AUTOMATICALLY? THANKS.
  • b717b717 Member Posts: 38
    From previous posts...

If you unlock the vehicle with the remote and don't open a door, it will relock in 30 sec.

You can turn off the "beeping" by inserting the key in the ignition, removing it, inserting it again and turn on, wait 10 seconds, then push lock, unlock, or panic twice. If you hear two beeps, you have toggled the beeping on or off.

Car will beep at you for 10 seconds if trying to lock with a door ajar.

When unlocking, the tail lights will stay on for 2 sec. if the alarm was tripped.
