    I never saw so many orange cars as when I lived in Knoxville. My friends and I used to joke that the automakers, whenever a red car came out a little off color (orangish), they'd just ship it to Knoxville. Same way with bright colored orange clothes. Only in Knoxville.

    Most of us don't like it because it costs too much. Who wants a monthly fee for listening to the radio? I like my radio and CD player just fine.

    I recently towed a 2000 pd boat with my 2001 QX4. Anyone know if I should use the tow/haul mode while towing all the time? The RPM's seemed quite high w/o overdrive. Chev recommends using tow/haul all the time while towing with their Silverado piece fo junk, but the RPM's were quite a bit lower and it worked fine. Not sure with the QX4 though. With the QX4 should you go in and out of this mode depending on the grade, or just put up with the high RPM's? Thanks

    XM !

    If I were driving a Honda Accord, I would not bother spending $300 to have XM installed, because Honda's stereo system can't make anything sound great.

    But if you are driving a QX4 with Bose OEM, you owe yourself an XM to take full advantage of the premium sould system.

    Host Steve, will you please do your own DD before you bash and criticize my posts about XM ? You won't doubt my genuine intention if you have personally sit in a Infinti equiped with Bose and XM.

    It's generally considered "rude" to shout on message boards (that is, typing in all caps - it's hard to read). Ergo my comment about screamer ads.

    I did "google" you and saw that you've been interviewed about XM and the story was picked up on the AP wires. You're the real deal :-) Or there's someone on the East Coast with the same name and interest in XM as you.

    If I wanted to bash XM, I'd ask leading questions about Sirius and the supposed slow-death of "Rock" and "Roll" due to rapid degeneration of the solar array(?) problems . Lots more car makers are doing the XM radio thing and it appears that XM has reached the critical mass it needs to survive. I bet it's stock price has turned around too.

    If you do, why do you pay for TV when you can get local channels for free ?

    Xmer, here's another link you may be interested in (Slashdot).

    The best thing about XM that I see is that it makes it easy to get out of your rut and listen to music that you otherwise may not have any exposure to. If you cart around your CDs or MP3s all the time, you miss out on a lot of the variety out there.

    Back to the QX4!

    Yes, I drive a QX4 and love it. I have never seen a better factory stereo on any car. I wouldn't mind spending the money if I was unhappy with my system but then again, the stereo is a big part of the reason I chose the QX4. If I didn't like the stereo, I would be in a different car (probably a 4Runner or Highlander).

    Yes, I pay for cable and hate that I have to do that. I can't get ESPN or CNN without paying for cable. TV is a much more important part of my life than radio is.

    Yes, of course I know what XM is about - Satellite digital radio where the stations never change when you go from town to town and state to state. I just don't think its worth the money, no matter what the sound quality it or what kind of music or programs are on there. Is there a station or program on there that you can't live without like I can't live without ESPN and CNN?

    Yes, that was me who was interviewed by the paper! I saved a few copies of the paper as well.

    As long as you agree that I am not a XM salesman I am happy.

    I personally think that I owe XM Co. for their wonderful programing because XM has made my daily driving and my long vacations trips SOoo MUCH more enjoyable. I have heard so many new songs from XM than all the FM stations combined. Have you heard of Elton John's " Original Sin " ? It is such a beautiful song and I want to thank XM for bring it to my QX4 in near CD quality.

    I am impressed that you know about the battery issue too. To my knowledge, it will be till 2007 before they have any power issue, and they have a spare satellite to replace it and they are ordering another satellite too.

    I apologize for my screaming, at the moment I felt I was offended by being called a salesman even though I was actually doing them a favor to share my valuable information and experiences with the board.

    About Sirius, I was thinking about putting one in my wife's van but I went to the circuit city store and it didn't sound as good as XM. I am not sure if it is because that I have BOSE playing XM while they use some other brand speakers.

    OK, enough of my XM talk and I apologize if my enthusiasm is out of control.

    I am not a XM salesman. I AM NOT !(sorry for the short screaming )

    I agree with you that I have never heard a better sounding factory car stereo than the Bose radio in the QX4 (especially when I get out of the QX4 and into my Prelude or my Saab). This is only my opinion. I'm not an audiophile in any way. And I've never heard the Mark Levinson Stereo available from Lexus.

    Yes, stereo system is my #1 concern too when I buy a car and that is why I chose 01 QX4. Heard that Mark Levinston is better than Bose, but BOSE is good enough for me.

    Yes, XM has CNN, CNNFN, CNBC, FOX NEWS, ESPN, Bloomberg, NASCAR, BBC...

    Personally, I can't live without XM party music channels and News Channels.

    Don't wanna sound like a XM sales man again. Some day you will understand why I am nuts about XM.

    I understand that XM has CNN, CNBC, FOX and ESPN but why do I need them on my radio if I have them on my TV? Why should I pay for them twice. I don't believe in throwing good money away. I don't listen to party music and not much news in may car other than NPR. But then, maybe if your a salesman and spend 4 or 5 hours every day in your car, then maybe it would be worth it.

    Not knocking the QX4, but the basic system in an RX300 sounds better than the QX4 Bose. My 96 sable jbl sytem sounds better also. Both of these have a subwoofer. Took the 2002 QX4 to a local stereo store and he said that the front speakers were pretty good, but when he did a full fade to the rear speakers, they sounded pretty bad. He suggested some kenwood speakers for the rear or an amp and two small subs where the rear speakers are. I do not want to trash the cargo area with big subs, and I want the car to look like it came from the factory. I haven't decided what to do yet, but will keep you posted if either solution is an improvement to me.

    I absolutely agree. My 00 RX300 basic system sounds better than my 02 QX4 Bose, actually I feel a lot better. RX300 system sounds rich, super clear. Maybe partly because RX300 has a subwoofer under the front passenger seat, and the power rating is higher, 240W vs 150W (?)

    When it comes to placing a value on listening quality, everyone hears sounds differently. Some enjoy rich deep bass sounds and others higher treble tones. Yes, there are limitations to all stereo systems when it comes to tone quality, amp power, vocal clarity, etc. IMHO, what makes one system better than another is how good or bad the listener feels the sound really is.
    Whereas one system may sound great for one indvidual, it may sound just average for another.

    If you are happy with the system you have, enjoy.

    I'm also very interested in the FX45. It will most likely be an addition to the QX4. The QX4 probably will receive a redesign for 2004. I read that Nissan is going to start production on a big size pickup for either 2003 or 2004. This will eventually lead to a larger size platform for the Pathfinder/QX4. Go bigger in seating, maybe to 7 so it can compete with the MDX and Honda's Pilot.

    The FX45 will fall into the crossover type of suv's.... Providing a buyer the SUV- like features but with a sports car type ride. Look for a V8, 300+ hp, AWD and less cargo space.

    Expected for debut January 2003 probably starting at $45K. There isn't much discussion on boards about it yet, but come the fall I'm sure things will heat up.

    It is worth it, imo, regardless how long you have to stay in your car.

    My commute is extremely short, 10 min. round trip, that's why I have to spend 30 min. to an hour parked in my drive way listen to XM. I would like to have one for our house but my wife doesn't let me because I like music loud and that give her headaches. Wish I could drive longer than 5 min. to go to my office.

    Do you know when they will have QX4 re designed ?

    Thanks, i was starting to feel all alone about this issue also. My 99 RX300 had the sub in the cargo area, I thought. I could be wrong on that. I did not know that it was a 240 watt unit. It did not say on the window sticker. I bet the Nakamichi sounds great. I know the JBL in my sable is 200 watts and has a small sub attached to the rear shelf.

    Crete. You are absolutely correct. The way I look at it is that if you have been listening to factory stereos in cavaliers, taurus, etc., then the Bose probably sounds wonderful. To me the Bose has very good clarity and definition, it just lacks umph to me. But if you have been driving MB, Jag or BMW with high end stereos, I think you would be disappointed in the Bose. I did not listen to the stereo too much on my test drives because I was trying to listen to the car as I drove. I just assumed, high end SUV and Bose stereo must be great stereo. The Bose in the Q45 is like 300 watts and 8 speakers, with a sub. So you can't just say it is the Bose system. I think Infiniti could have put a much better Bose system in this SUV. Like I said before I think the quality of the sound is good, it just needs more power and a small sub. My stereo guy said if I did not like the sound of what he put in, I could take it back out in 30 days and all I would pay is $30 labor. So I think I might try the subs and amp in the rear speaker positions.

    I took my 2002 QX4 into the dealer yesterday because my father found the door welts on both sides in the back coming loose. The service rep. said that these are for keeping out the road noise. He also said that this is the first case he has seen of them coming loose. He thought it might be due to the heat. Now, I know my QX4 is not the first one to see Carolina heat. Has anyone else had this happen? If so has it happened more than once? Maybe the adhesive used is not good enough or cannot stand up to temperatures in the South. Any ideas?

    that they are for keeping out the road noise. They look like weather stripping rubber seals on the inside of the door frame.

    Found yesterday that on my 02 QX4 hood, there are three little bumps. The longest one is about half inch long maybe 20th inch wide. The other two are of the same width but shorter. I cleaned that area and waxed, made sure they are not some dirty stuff from outside. Will take the car in next Monday. I doubt the dealer can do much about it, unless it's the top clear coat bump that can be very gently sanded down.

    If you want rubber to stick to something use 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive. It is yellow stuff that won't let go.

    Hi everyone -- Just took delivery of my new QX4. Manual says it's important to use premium gas; salesman said don't worry about it, but I would like your input. Should I use premium always, sometimes (if so, how often?) or mid-grade always, or mix premium with regular? Also would appreciate a quick education why or why not one or the other -- as much as I hate the prices, I want to do what's best for the car and the ride.

    I would like to know that too but I don't risk it. I use the premium. Anyone in here might tell you that regular is OK but I don't risk voiding the warranty. I would only be comfortable if an official told me in writing that it would only affect the mpg or something extraneous like that.

    There has been numerous discussions on this board as well as the Pathfinder board about regular vs premium. Most owners have found no extra benefit to gas mileage when using premium, but for me if the manufacturer says use premium, then I'll use it. There must be some reason why this is so, maybe engine components, valves, catalytic converter issues, etc will have longer life with premium gas. One thing mentioned by some owners is when using synthetic oil, better gas mileage was achieved.

    My gone 96 Maxima's manual says the same as 02 QX4, something like "premium is recommended but... regular is OK". I've been using lots of regular on my Maxima and no problem at all. Maxima has a knock sensor that will help adjust the ignition timing. I'd guess QX4 is the same. Manual says "for better performance use premium". I think with accurate meter and push the car to extreme the performance difference may be found.
    I compared regular and premium on Maxima and could not found ANY difference, MPG, idle smoothness, acceleration, whatever I could think of.

    When looking at regular or premium, shouldn't we also take careful consideration as to the brand of gas we use. It could be very possible that one company's brand is slightly different in refining their mixture than another. Filling up with premium at Chevron, Mobil, Shell, etc could be better in some ways than with small independent operators like (Rich's, Robbie's, Metron, etc).

    I agree with what jiamin said. The manual does not say use premium only. I read that carefully three times to make sure I understood what it said. Have only had mine about a month or so, so i cannot comment on the long term use of regular fuel only. I would think if premium was that important it would say PREMIUM ONLY in a lot of conspicious places on the car and manual.

    Should you keep your 2001 QX4 out of overdrive when towing a 2000 pd trailer? Or is it ok to tow in OD? When not in OD I get very high RPM's.

    The premium vs regular gas has been debated on this site and the pathy site numerous times. I can't remembe the actual specifics but the manual doesn't mention premium or regular but talks about octane and that it should be at least 91. From others, it has been said that the engine will adjust to a lower octane but will cause a decrease in mileage and horsepower. But most importantly, can lead to long-term damage to your engine. If anyone can fill in with specifics, feel free.

    My new 2002 QX4 has had a clicking noise in the dash since i got it a month ago. I took it to the dealer three times now and each time they have lessened the noise but this third time they have narrowed the noise as coming from the heater core. It seems the heater hoses running through the firewall to the heater core under the dash are moving up/down when the engine has force upon it. The hose connections are hitting the heater core so they've tried tightening the connections but the noise still exists. My dealer says the heater core element needs to be replaced, however to do this they need to remove the entire dashboard. I'm very concerned about having the entire dash removed over a clicking noise which does bother me a little every time the engine accelerates or while going over some bumpy roads.

    But to have the whole dash removed at this time would leave me wondering if I'm asking for more trouble. The dealer says they will be very careful reinstalling the dash and since it is still under warranty if anything goes wrong it can be checked out. Or I can wait just until my warranty is up and have the dash removed at that time and just live with the noise until then.

    Folks, I'd appreciate your input on whether to live with the noise for now or take a chance on removing the dash. Also, has anyone else ever had their dash removed and replaced without further problems.

    I'm not sure the dash noise I got and solved is the same as yours. It was a little noise when I went over bumps. I found it came from dash top front air vents, the long and skinny ones. The right side one has two sensors on it. I pressed and felt they were loose so I used some sponge to squeeze in their gaps and NO MORE noise. So far that's the only noise I got. Please try to press and feel it and let us know.

    It's been awhile since I've posted. My QX4 is now over the 10,000 mile mark. No complaints at all.

    Recently I've been looking at XM radio and I noticed a small discussion going on here. For those of you with XM radio installed in your QX4, I've got a few questions I was hoping you could clear up:

    1) Have you replaced the entire headunit or used one of the add-on receivers?

    3) If you replaced the headunit, does the steering wheel volume toggle still work?

    2) How is the XM antenna attached? Do they drill a hole or is there a visible wire that slips out from one of the doors?

    Has anyone had any experience Towing with the QX4. I love the QX4, but I also plan to tow a travel trailer with about 4800 lb towing weight. I read where the QX4 has a 5000 lb towing capacity. I am a little scared that I would be closing in on the maximum closer than what I wanted. Please share your experiences with me. This is a deciding factor for me.

    My 02 QX4 just passed 1k miles. Yesterday I finished a 260 mile trip, nearly 100% highway. Most time at 80 MPH, a few occasions at 90 MPG for just a few seconds. Calculated MPG is 18.3, me and another passenger with no luggage. 4WD switch was always at 2WD.
    The trip before that was 30% city 70% highway and MPG was 16.8, only me in the car.

    I have a 99 so you actually have a different engine than I do, but.....

    Once you get over 70MPH your milage will drop considerably. I did a long trip at 90 and sucked down the fuel, at 70 it was MUCH better.

    Yes I know it's not good to exceed speed limit too much. I had to attend an offsite meeting that I ran a bit too late.
    Tomorrow will be another shorter trip, about 120 miles. I'll try to stay at 70 MPH, with five people in the car.

    Well I got my QX4 back from the dealer without having them remove the dash to replace the heater core. But now the noise is slightly worse than before, and I'm still debating whether I should go ahead with the repairs the dealer says would fix the noise.

    Should I trust the dealer is correct in saying that the dash has to be removed to replace the heater and that should solve the noise issue? Has anyone had or know of anyone that had a dashboard removed and replaced without any further problems?

    Has anyone had any problems with their auto retracting antenna? Some people seem to think that they are prone to problems and are no longer desireable to have on a car.

    Retracting antenna will gradually phase out. I had new 94 Altima, 96 Maxima (just totalled) and none of the retracting antenna had any problem.
