My friend thought the 1441 might be the gas cap, again.

Thanks for the info, I sure do appreciate your insight. Keep up the good work in this forumn.

I'm getting about 12mpg in the city, so you should be getting 14-16 in highway. Are you using premium gas?

If your vehicle is equipped w/4WD than the lunge is normal.. We all have the same thing I'm told as it is the transfer case releasing in the axle.

    Hello,
I am about to purchase a 2001 QX4 from an Infiniti dealer with 27,000 miles.

Can someone explain to me the 30K maintenance. The dealership did NOT say a word to me about it. Am I going to drive this car off the lot just to drive it back in a month a pay a several hundred dollars for the 30K check.

    Is it for warranty purposes?
  • carlover2carlover2 Member Posts: 3
Hi and congrats on your new purchase if you decided to buy, I'd like to recommend to check over estimate of maintainance price @ Edmunds used car site and click at "maintainance" window, it's very helpful and gave you a lot of details about what you should do and how much it costs, also check and compare with the manual book of the vehicle you're purchasing so you'll know what required to replace and what not at 30k miles, and NO, maintainance or check-up is NOT for warranty purposes, if you had time please read over discussion # 1884 from MarkBean posted on 08-06 from this site about how his wife got overcharged for 30k check up. Edmunds vehicle maintainance site also give you info of "Recall or TSB" of the vehicle if there's any and if you still in doubt, question and request the service advisor at the dealership you're purchasing- answer and explain full details about what your vehicle needs at 30k then compare with another shop (not dealer)before decided to do it. I'd think you may negotiate with dealer included 30k service and if they want to sell the car, they'll O.K with it (they can do early 30k service)before they deliver the car to you and because in same dealership, they get in house discount from service dept (I Knew this because I was a service advisor before).
         Good luck.

    Hello,

I'm looking at buying a Jade '01 QX4. When I opened the hood, everything was gray. Under the hood, the inner fenders, rad support etc. Is this normal? I think this thing has been in an accident or just repainted....

    Thanks

I think it's re-paintwed. Never seen a car with different colors inside and outside. Always the same color but inside finish is not that shiny. Also I think with Nissan/Infiniti there is color code on the firewall somewhere, maybe on passenger side. If I remember right my brilliant silver color code is KY0.

    Hi:

I have a 2001 4WD QX4. At freeway speeds, around 65-70 MPH, the tachometer is showing around 2500 RPM. Is this normal? Our 2004 Honda Pilot shows around 1500-1700 RPM at the same speed. I realize the Honda has a 5-speed transmission vs. the QX4's 4 speed, but 2500 RPM seems high. I would be interested to know what other's are seeing on their tach's when cruising at freeway speeds. Thanks!

I have the same thing happening with my 2001 QX4 with 4-wheel-drive. A friend with the same year and model had the identical "lunge." The dealer pointed out that there was a bulletin on it, but it was not mentioned as a problem, just something that happens. It only occurs in "Auto" 4WD mode (intermittenetly) when turning the engine off, or when switch from Auto to 2WD while driving. Apparently it is the the 4WD system disengaging. If I'm driving in "Auto" mode on a smooth surface where the 4WD does not engage, the lunge does not occur when I turn off the vehicle.

Took my 2001 QX4 to a local Infiniti dealer to have my catalytic converter looked at due to the OBDII codes P0420 and P0430. Service advisor stated that those codes were attributed to software upgrade for ECU.

They reprogramed the ECU and asked me to drive the car for 3 days before reinspection.

Hopefully, this will resolve the situation.

If you compare the rear axle ratios of the QX4 and the Honda, I think you'll see a big difference...The QX4 is higher...Hence, we're spinning more...

I'm considering a 01 QX4 4x4 Gold/Beige with Heated Seats, Premium Package, and Moonroof. It has 50k miles and was in a "minor" accident as per carfax. It looks perfect and drives fine but it's out of warranty. I'm having a mechanic I trust look at it before I purchase. I've got the price down to $18.5k. Is this a good deal if the inspection comes out ok? Also, is there anything that the mechanic should look for in particular?
    thanks!
  • Jack44Jack44 Member Posts: 221
I'd ask what kind of accident it was in...Could affect steering if...But if just a fender bender...

    That's a good price...

Bumper-to-bumper warranty last until 60,000 miles. The powertrain is until 70,000, all transferable. I would also call Infiniti consumer service and check to see it's maintenance log using the car's VIN.

    Good luck.

    Hi All,

I have a 2001 QX4 w/ about 51k miles. Lastnight while driving home on the highway, my engine just shut-off, no power steering or power brakes but I did have my lights. Luckily, I was close to an offramp and pulled over on a side street.

Thinking it was an electrical problem. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it. When I tired to start it, the starter motor would turn-over but couldn't get the engine to start. Well, I decided to get it towed this morning instead of lastnight but it started without a problem. However, while driving home the engine service light went off with a few chirps but the engine kept running and I was able to go home.

Anybody have this problem before? Any thoughts?

I've posted before where I've been driving and my headlights would turn-off but still had fog-lights. After playing with the switches the lights would eventually come back on. Not sure if it's related but thought I'd mention it.

I'll be bringing it the dealer tomorrow but unfortunately my warranty ran out a few months ago.

    Thanks for reading.

Recently I noticed my 02 QX4's rear left side is lower than rear right side by 3/8". I measured where the bumper cover joins the wheel well. There is nothing loaded in the car, and all tire pressures are within 0.5 psi.

I'm not sure if that difference is normal or not. When I drive I don't feel anything abnormal.

Anyone has experience with them? It claims that when windows are open (maybe partially), they reduce the noise.

My question is that when windows are all closed, will they increase the wind noise? I think they will. They are extra parts that are not flush with rest of the car, therefore at high speed they will generate some wind noise...

    Thanks.

This site is not so active so I am just writing up something...

Recently I found two front windows are slow. With windows all the way down, I pulled out the rubber guides and cleaned them with cloth. Put them back in, and sprayed some WD40. It worked perfectly again. I'm not sure if WD40 will degrade the rubber or not.

One Infiniti dealer quoted for $1000+ plus tax, the other one I bought QX4 from quoted $899+tax. One Nissan dealer quoted $555+tax, and the other Nissan dealer wouldn't do service on QX4 since they think although they are twin, the Infiniti instruction is different. They do not want more business...

Edmunds estimates the cost at $344. That's $88 parts & $256 labor. Try here:

    http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/MaintenanceServlet?tid=edmunds- ....8.1.*

Or go to Edmunds main site, pick "Tips & Advice" from the menu across the top, then select "Maintenance Costs" just below the top menu.

Looking at 2-3 year old SUV's and have the 2003 QX4 on my list. Am comparing it to Acura MDX and Highlander for styling and appearance (and I know the QX will feel more like a truck).
I have a Nissan Maxima w/ 234k miles, so i know about the reliability/dependability. With the QX4 out of production, any issues regarding service, parts, etc.? I would imagine not, given the Infiniti name and the sharing of parts with the Pathfinder.
Thanks, and any other opinions on the QX4 are more than welcome.

I have a 97 QX4 that needs a major service. I do not know of a good mechanic in the S. F. Bay area, and I have been told the dealers charge 3 to 4 times what most shops will charge. Can anyone recommend a reliable mechanic to service the car? Thanks-

I go to Wynn's Motors in SF to have my 2001 QX4 serviced. Get a service menu from the dealer and ask Wynn's to give you a price quote.

Got it done three weeks ago. Total is $900+. I hesitated for a while and decided to let dealer do it this time. Will never let dealer service but a good independent mechanic. I worried about not just the cost but the real work they did. Two weeks later my friend behind me found one of my rear combination light went out. I went back to the dealer asking for a bad bulb that I verified myself. Dealer charged my $2.00. Although virtually free, my car is still under warranty (only three years old and only 32K miles). They said if I want to go through waranty then I have to book a time, wait for the paperwork, wait for another while till the fix is done. I don't quite understand why they couldn't just give my the bulb, let me do my own fix, and do their paperwork without me? It'll save both of us time. I complained it on Infiniti's servey sheet.

Some of my friends say some dealers do not perform all the checks on their list. Well, they DO check everything on their list with a pen... Even if they do all the check it's still too expensive. A good, reliable mechanic is usually a master technician who is not happy with the dealer's low pay, quits and run his own repair business.

Hi, I am looking to have 60K service done for my 2002QX4 (I am about 3k over now). Dealer said it would be close to $600. I like the car and have had little to no problem with it-- bought it used with about 31K. I wanted to get some feedback as to whether I should stick with dealer or look for cheaper mechanic. I am in the Atlanta area but am not too familiar with mechanics in the area. I really like the car, though gas prices are starting to be a bit of a problem too. Curious to see what people think....Thanks

The dealer may be recommending that more be done than the minimum required by Infiniti. The Edmunds Maintenance Guide will tell you what we think a recommended service should cost in your zip code.

I have a 2001 QX4 that now has 114k miles. I use a local mechanic (St. Augustine, FL) that is very familiar with Nissan products. He does 30k service at much below dealer, usually around $300. Also, with this vehicle, many items that are typically part of a 30K service are dealt with at other times (e.g., spark plugs at 105k, cabin filter every 15k, etc.). I would ask around, especially people with Nissans, for a competent mechanic who regularly services them. You may be surprised how much more reasonable the service cost could be.

I'm looking for a QX4 4WD with limited slip differential. A salesman told me that all Inifiniti 4WDs have limited slip. Edmunds lists limited slip as an option for the QX4 4WD. That suggests that it's not on all of them. Give the low down on this one.
  • jiaminjiamin Member Posts: 556
Well, mine is 2002 4WD. 2002 Brochure says LSD is only with heated seat package. Since mine does not have that package, I don't have LSD. I don't kow about the other years.
  • archimedesarchimedes Member Posts: 16
I also understand that the lsd was part of an option package that included heated seats for the 4wd model. However, I think I read somewhere that it became standard on the 2003 model. Not sure about that though. I think it was just the premium package that became standard in 2003. You can always check by looking at the differential and checking for the orange lsd sticker.
  • archimedesarchimedes Member Posts: 16
I did not want to hijack the above thread, so am starting another on similar topic.

I'm thinking of putting an lsd in my 2001 2wd QX4. Anyone have any experience or opinion regarding how much this will help? I live in north Florida, so 4wd is not critical. I would just be looking to get a little better manueverability when driving on sand, wet grass, or dirt. Have read mixed opinions. Some feel that open differentials are fine, and some that the lsd gives you just the amount of added traction needed.

Also, I've gotten mixed input on cost. The lsd from infiniti, or even an after market original parts outfit will cost around $1000 or more, then about $200 to install. For that price, I could go through 2 sets of all terrain tires, possibly a better way to go. But, I also found an online vendor (won't mention name) that has an lsd for the pathfinder (mechanically idential to Q) for $400. Haven't been able to get the low-down on differences in quality, workmanship, etc. Is it just the name I pay for when getting the infiniti part, or a substantial quality improvement? My goal is to have an SUV that is a great commuter car (well, gas mileage is ... OK) but is also a great vehicle for camping, kayaking and other excursions that could involve moderate off-road use. My suspicion is that I can achieve this goal by putting on a good set of all-terrain tires and possibly an lsd or locking differential. And, considering I'm in Florida, that may suit my purpose just as well as a 4wd would. Obviously, I don't want to put an unjustified sum of money into a car that maybe will be better off traded within the next 5 years. OTOH, one of these QX4s could be a vehicle that would go to 300-400K miles. I already have 120K on mine.

    thanks for any input,
    Stan

First of all, please excuse my poor english. I have a '97 QX4. Does it have an empty fuel light? I've never seen this light, and I always fuel the gas when mile meter reaches around 260 miles because gas gauge looks almost empty. How many miles can '97 QX4 run anyway? I just found the review that says fuel capacity is 21.1 gallons, but I cannot fuel the gas more than 16 gallons. So I wonder if my car run more than 260 miles even gas gauge looks empty. (Again, I'm sorry for my poor English.)

I have a 2001 QX4 4WD which shows corrosion signs at one of the alloy wheels. The corrosion is from the inside out. The car has 35k miles and the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired a few months ago. The Infiniti dealers and the Infiniti Consumer Affairs refuse to pay even a fraction of refinishing the wheel. This Infiniti service fame did not really surface during my discussions with them. They really responded like a big 3 Dealer. Any ideas on how to proceed?

I've had my '03 Qx4 for a few months now and it did not have the owner's manual when I purchased the vehicle. The Seat Memory doesn't seem to be working correctly, and I'm fairly sure I'm not "setting" it with the correct procedure.

Can anyone explain what are the correct specifics steps are for setting the #1 and #2 memory seat positions? What buttons and in what order do they need to be pressed? Do
any need to be pressed simultaneously? I've tried all combinations I can think of and can't seem to get it to work correctly.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

My Qx4 has a full size spare WITH an extra alloy rim. Just take the spare rim, put a good tire on it, and off you go.

    Hi Jeff,

    Here is my 02 manual:

    1) Set transmissin lever to P;
    2) Turn ignition to ON;
    3) Adjust seat to the position you want to save;
    4) Push SET botton, and within 5 seconds, push memory 1 or 2 for at least 1 second.

The above is simplified, not exactly from the owner's manual. the way to check is to move seat to any other position, then press the saved button and see if the seat will go to your saved position.
  • bolucaboluca Member Posts: 32
I believe to use the memory button the vehicle must be in park or at least stopped and there is a seat button on the dash that must be on. It is to the left of the steering wheel and I think it says auto or something like that. Push it to on or auto. Sorry, I am trying to do this from memory.
  • jiaminjiamin Member Posts: 556
Exactly. This switch (Auto or Cancel) must be turned to Auto so that memory seat will work. Shifter must be in Park, and only stopping the car will not let memory seat work. I also remember that if there is not key in the igntion but the driver's door is open, memory seat will "partially" work, meaning when I press the button 1 or 2, seat will move forward or backward to the saved position, but will not move up or down to the saved height.

I live in NY so I do have to deal with Snow and winter weather. It is time to replace the stock duler bridgestone tires on my wife's 2001 QX4. has anyone found a good tire? these were OK at best and wore out in 30K!

    Thanks
  • jiaminjiamin Member Posts: 556
Yes, my stock duler bridgestone only lasted a little over 30K. After some resaearch, I replaced them with Michelin Cross Terrain that is said to last much longer and quieter. I think the quietness is about the same or a bit better.
  • npapasnpapas Member Posts: 6
Jeff, try the Michelin LTXs. They are more expensive but they are really good. After 36k miles, they still have 8/32' thread remaining. They are also relatively quiet. In fact, I am replacing my wife's Goodyears with them on a Lexus RX300.
