This is my first post. I have been following this board for some time in order to gain more info on the CR-V. Seems like most everyone is quite positive about ownership. Can someone tell me if the EX comes with inboard armrests, or if they are an option (either dealer or factory). If they are dealer installed, how's the quality? I find it hard to believe that these would be omitted from the more costly version as I have seen and driven an LX and know that they come standard on this model. Thanks for any help.
Welcome to the most informative CRV board on the net. Yes, the EX model comes with factory interior armrests on driver and passenger seats. Very similar to other year armrests and they are as comfortable as armrests can be. Hope this helps and good luck in your search for a SUV. You will not be unhappy with the 2002 CRV. Many changes and all for the best in my opinion.
Got tired of my glasses rattling when I used the holder. Discovered there is a foam ridge at the top (inside) and if I push the top of my glasses against that then the bottom part of the glasses angles itself nicely so that it is firm against the lid of the holder - no more ralttles. Probably depends on size of glasses, however.
EX automatic has armrests for both driver and passenger seats. EX manual has armrest only on passenger seat. Supposed to interfere with manual shifter - what Honda says anyway. Armrests are nice but could be longer and wider.
I had homelink on my Accord and you had to be right up next to the garage for it to work. So being the impatient person I am, I didn't really like it. Not sure if others find the same thing. I like the cubby hole the '02 CR-V has above the cruise switch, perfect for my garage door opener. Don't have to clip it to the visor where it leaves an indentation.
As for steering wheel radio controls, I had those too. Don't really miss them. You have to remember this isn't a luxury vehicle so it can't have everything.
I cannot find a spot where my sunglasses don't rattle in the holder. I just put them in the flip down storage in the dash. So what should I use the holder for?---my garage door opener ;-).

I realize that this may seem like apples and oranges, but I find myself tossing between the new Jeep Liberty and the 02 CRV. Both have a very loyal ownership group. I guess it boils down to whether or not the CRV would be able to handle deep sand in order to allow access to remote areas of beach on SPI (deep south Texas).
Glad to hear about the armrests. That may have pushed the decision too hastily.
I love South Padre. The dunes are the far side (away from all the hotels/condos) are really great. But have no idea about driving thru them. Probably Jeep is better suited to that sort of thing, but I hear it is pretty rough riding in normal driving.
I considered putting some extra foam in the holder until I figured out to put my glasses in it.
South Padre Island is a hoot. I spent a week there several years ago.
For sand, floatation is key, so what I'd recommend are wider tires than the 205/70R15s on the CR-V. I had the exact same tire size on my vehicle and upgraded to a 225/60R16, and those were just great on the sand. Aired down to 18psi and drove past a GM diesel pickup (he forgot to let the air out of his tires). I've spent 8 days or so driving on the beach and never once got stuck.
CR-V's short gearing ought to work well in the sand, where 160hp will feel like 60hp.
If you are the enterprising type, the Homelink unit from the Accord is allegedly a good fit into the 2002 CR-V. Unfortunately, I own neither, so I cannot personally vouch for this.
wannavee: From time to time I like motoring down to the coast too -- Quintana (Freeport), San Luis Pass (Galveston), Matagorda. I haven't had any problems on the sand with the CR-V's RT4WD. On the beaches it's all about traction; a V6 and low-range gearing matter little in comparison to simply being smart about not digging your wheels in. Just remember to tread lightly, leave the dune vegetation alone, and rinse off (including undercarriage) when you get back!
Killed my TV in '99. Varmint is right though - I'm on the pc screen 24/7 it seems -- so far it's easier to kill popup ads than get a Tivo. I do have those friends whose idea of social interaction is to sit in front of the tube together, so I get occasional TV face time. You guys are much more entertaining though.

Does anybody know where one can buy a nice compass/temperature module that could fit where the present map lights/sunglass holder is on the '02 V? It has to look factory installed, not the type that sticks to the dash and floats around in water. Also, how many miles can you put on with a full tank until the orange low fuel light comes on. It would be interesting to see the various numbers reported.

I'm glad you mentioned not liking the indent from the door opener, it gives support for my moving them every so often to limit the dent effect. I was browsing the net and looked at consumers report online.They listed the best bets in cars and the RAV4 was listed but not the CRV.I looked at the RAV4 and chose the CRV over it.It must be a mistake or the CRV 02 was not out when they did the article.If this is their true opinion Consumers Report just lost all it's credibility with me.Too bad,I just subscribed to their mag. I mean rag.
I keep seeing great US-based Honda parts dealers mentioned in this forum. Unfortunately, none seem to ship to Canada. Any Canadians out know of one in Canada, or a US firm that ships up to the great white north? I plan to buy later this spring, and I know I will be looking for a few things -- hard spare cover, roof rack, etc. Maybe even a few of those snazzy gold trim pieces!
Tomsr - You'll note that CR's rankings are for the April issue and the '02 CR-V was reviewed in the May issue. Given the lead time on publishing magazines, I think it's safe to say that they had some experience with the new CR-V before they made their decision.
If you are confused by how they rank the vehicles, take a look at their criteria. In their minds, the perfect mini-ute is a small wagon. So the results make a bit more sense when you understand how the vehicles are tested. This is neither good nor bad, it's just a narrow point of view.

Are shipping costs higher up there? Do the provincial tax laws make it difficult to make a profit this way? I dunno.
protege_man: Homelink is a system in some Honda and Acuras (and other makes have similar systems) that you can program to open your garage door and turn on lights---things like normal garage door openers can do.
crvcivic: I'm anal but I didn't go as far as you. When I got rid of my Accord it had an indentation from 13 years of having the opener clipped to the visor. Love my cubby hole ;-)

Muckyduck - I was thinking about your posts regarding the varied shiftpoints for your CR-V. It dawned on me that you may simple be experiencing the Grade Logic Transmission in action.
The vehicle is capable of sensing when you're on a hill and hold a gear longer while going up or down. Transmissions without this feature will sometimes be indecisive and shift back and forth between two gears. I had an old Ford that did this all the time. Instead of jumping back and forth, the CR-V will simply hold the lower gear. Some people find the resulting revving a bit unnerving.
The CRV was redesigned from the ground up for 2002. CR does not have enough info on the 2002 yet, so Consumer Reports cannot recommend or not recommend the 2002 CRV. However, if you look at the previous year's info on the CRV, you will find that it is an excellent vehicle...I believe they rated it as having exceptional reliablity.
If you'll notice, Consumer Reports bases its ratings on a poll it sends to its subscribers. Since very few subscribers would have the new 2002 CRV, they cannot include any ratings.
If you can wait, I'm sure you'll see that the '02 CRV will get great ratings....IF you can wait!

varmit: You make a good point. I know it feels different from my previous automatic. There are no hills in Houston!! I thnk it is working correctly in terms of shifting. However, there still may be something wrong - the crv feels like it wants to drop power sometimes - when driving in rush hour there are times when it feels like it might stall - not severe at this point but am worried it is going to get worst. But that is going to be hard to get a dealer to duplicate. Stall might be the wrong word but there is noticeable drop in RPMs. What is the normal idle RPM? The mechanic I was going to has moved, so I will have to find some time to get out there.

Tom: CR recommends three cute utes: the RAV4, Forester, and CR-V (which they report on in the current issue). They wouldn't try to talk you out of a CR-V, in other words. They can only forecast reliability at this point, but they expect it to be great.
CR-AV - I remember talk last year about Honda designing a three row version of the CR-V for Southern Asia. Don't expect it would meet safety requirements here.
Ordered an EX Auto in Chianti Red. My opinion, a classy color and the black bumpers & trim blend nicely. Also wanted something with beige interior(I've had grey in my PF for 6 years) I will be doing aftermarket leather for about $1,000. Not sure about heated seats. They are asking $500 which is a little pricey. Other accesories I'm on the fence: roof rack,cargo cover,tray will depend on finances(will do one time or other).I may also switch tires to Yokohama Avid if my son's friend who manages a tire store cuts me a deal.
Nice color. I have the same interior color and I like it. All I've added are wheel locks and front mud flaps. Both of those were no brainers (perfect for me). Try the site I mentioned, their price on wheel locks is below anything I've found, so I'm sure they are competitive on most accessories.
CRV platform will be used by Honda in manufacturing an Asian Utility Vehicle (AUV). AUVs are modified SUVs that are very popular in Southeast Asia. Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Isuzu have AUV models sold in the Philippines. This type of vehicle can accomodate 10 passengers. Bench-type seats are used at the front/first and second rows so they can accomodate 6 passengers. Two folding back seats face each other and can accomodate another 4 passengers.
Yes, www.hondapartsforyou.com does have good prices on wheel locks. I just bought from them a few things and the order came in last Wed as promised.
Right now, they are having a special on 4 wheel locks (mainly for other Honda cars) for $20. Last week the special was $10 for the 4 and $32.50 for 5 (why???). I locked up my spare and 3 on the ground. I figure that should give thieves only one easy wheel and if they were going to jack up the car, they'd get them anyway.

Hello everyone! I've been lurking here for a few months now - considering the purchase of a CRV or Pilot later this summer or fall. I too have searched, without success, for a Canadian (Ontario) Honda dealer that sells accessories as a major part of their business.
Because of the population base difference, capturing <1% of the Canadian Honda accessories market is not remotely as lucrative as capturing <1% of the same market in the US. As for Canadian dealers selling accessories into the US market, shipping is indeed an expensive consideration. I know of businesses who transport their product across the border once a week and ship stateside to SAVE money!
Accessories will be priced lowest as part of a vehicle purchase deal so here are a couple of suggestions:
1. Shop by fax or email for the accessories you want at ALL provincial Honda dealers parts (not sales) departments. Request both a per item and a "package deal" price. You can obtain the part numbers from US Honda dealer web sites. I have some of this info on hand already - email me if you want a copy. Take the lowest price for each item then...
2. To get the best deal on the purchase of your CRV, consider joining the APA - the ~$56 fee is well worth it. We bought our Acura TL through them and saved over $400 on the best price I could privately negotiate for the vehicle.
Unfortunately, the meager 10% off Honda accessories SRP that APA offers members is a joke. Using the lowest prices from No. 1 above, you, yourself, should be able to negotiate a better deal with the APA dealer. Make it clear that the cost of the accessories is the potential deal breaker!

Any known problems with the '02 CRV with either oil consumption or pre-ignition? I'm just old enough to remember the time when neither was a problem, especially prior to emissions testing. Burning oil tends to really mess that up here in Northern Va.

I paid MSRP for my EX but they including the PROPAK which they charge $600 for (it is worth $200 if you get the stuff at HandA.This includes wheel locks,door edge guards,4 mudguards,and a cargo tray.I guess I got lucky in that this car was on the lot but not on display and the internet sales man showed it to me in the service area.It had been at the car show and needed cleaning up.It was the color I wanted too.(RED)

It would be a way to distinguish it more from the Element. Beef up payload, though, XL7 can carry close to 1200 lbs.
