Pretty gusty considering Toyota's sludge saga last year. Owners already tend to push it, that'll encourage 'em to wait even longer.

I did the opposite - I shortened my intervals, even though I don't own a Toyota.

...IIRC, my Dad's 02 CRV called for 10K normal conditions, 5K severe.

-juice - oil change frequency for CR-Vs is greater because CR-Vs are more highly stressed ... or at least their owners are. Accord owners just drive, while CR-V owners are driven (apologies Nissaners :-)

-brochure - 2003 CR-V brochures made it to Maine and are therefore at a dealer near you ... CD compartment expansion is highly featured ... I think the CDs even have their own airbags!

"at least their owners are" - LOL!

Doubt that, though, people here seem pretty laid back.

I wonder, is the oil capacity any different? Do they recommend synthetic on the Accord engine?

Nissan is replacing those Driven ads, so the phrase is fair game. I still say the G35 coupe looks better than the Z, FWIW.

I got mine at $17488 (LX 4WD 5SP) which was advertised on Boston Sunday Globe two weeks ago. The dealer just honored the price.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Any processing or advertising fees tacked onto that? I'd be surprised if they weren't.

Or they just wanted to get rid of the last 2002 and your timing was perfect.

Just a $99 doc fee. They also advertised EX for $20258 but I was a little late to get that one. The car has not come yet. I expect it will come in the next 2 weeks.

Hello all! I love my new 2002 Honda Crv Ex. I got the seat rocking fixed back in May and now i have the same problem!! i got one of the early crv's in my area but my question is should i accept another Honda service Bulletin 02-017 fix which obviously did not work for long or demand another seat. I think i probably will take this back to the original dealer that I bought it from even though it is far away fom where i live but they did the first seat repair. Its annoying slight rock back wheni stop and start and sometimes between gears(5 speed). I am confident that i can get this fixed correctly from Honda. Other than that I love this car, the way it runs and handles its perfect for me. I was a 2 time accord owner before this. What do you guys on this forum think?? I have been following this forum both befor and after my purchase. I would not have even known about the seat issue and service bulletin except that I frequently fead this forum. Any help or opinions appreciated. BTW I have 9,800 miles have used Amsoil 5w-20 oil and the engine runs like a top. Mark

My understanding is that honda rolls advertising fees into the invoice, so there are no regional differences. This is because Honda wants to control the advertising. Therefore, I would be very suspicious of any dealer that tries to tack on any additional advertising fee on a Honda. What has been the experience of other Honda buyers?

If you want to install an auto temp system, you'll need the following:

    -the dash controls
    -the in car temp sensor
-the solar load sensor (a little dome which will go on the dash near the base of the windshield
    - the outside air temp sensor (usually installs near the front bumper
    - a new speed controller for the fan blower motor

You may even need a new A/C module - the in car temp sensor frequently draws air from the A/C module accross the sensor, requiring a hole to be punched out from the A/C module case.

Long story short - it can be done, but you'll need a lot of parts and a lot of $$ to buy the parts and a lot of vehicle service ingenuity.

(You'll need all factory parts as they are calibrated to all work together. Otherwise, it just won't be able to keep a set temp.)

    jas28,

If that is the case, I think I will just forget the whole climate control thing. I wouldn't want to spend more then $200 on it.

I was thinking the crvs across the world are generally wired the same to cut down on cost. Also, the CRV are manufactured in England where the climate control is available I thought it would be a quick retrofit.
  • kentwongkentwong Member Posts: 36
Does the donut-shaped compartment under the pinic table fit the spare tire hanging on the back door? did anyone give that a try. It would be a smart design option so that CRV owners may choose one way or other to store the spare tire.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
...the same way that I thought it would be easy to add heated mirrors to my 00 Ody. The Canadian market units get that, but nooooooo the wiring harness is completely different between the US and Canadian market units.

I currently own a crv auto ex 1998 and I am contemplating changing to either a 2002 crv or the 2003 accord. I like the crv but I test drove both and found the accord to be much peppier and quieter than the crv. I need to decide which way to go. Anyone else thinking this way.
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
I have a '99 CRV and '01 Accord. I like both and enjoy driving both, but at different times. It depends on what's important to you as they're for people with different needs. I hunt/fish and take the dog with me so I like the CRV. My wife doesn't do any of that and would never allow the dog in her car, so she drives the Accord.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Frank: you answered your own question. Go for the Accord.

I'm from the town in Wisconsin where they build the Tahoe...I have seen a few CR-Vs always driven by women. I guess like I'm the only guy in the State who drives the CR-V...LOL

What's your experience? Does anybody knows what's the gender distribution of this car?
  • jfigueroa1jfigueroa1 Member Posts: 209
I had an accord 01 and the ride was nice soft and with minimum road noise. very easy to get in and out (example. wive expecting/elderly relatives)easy to drive and park very good driving comfort. The crv as nice as the accord with lil more road noise and a lil bit harder ride having a higher driving position make it in my opinion safer in a case of an accidents, and in some light flooding you do not have to worry about. cargo space in very good in the crv power wise the crv get up and go very good. if i had to buy another car i would keep my wive crv and would buy an accord for me or a civic to commute. This is my own thoughts.

AutoPacific had it at around 59% female, FWIW. But the RAV4 (62%) and Forester (55%) are also mostly female owned.

That shouldn't be a surprise - they are user friendly, fuel efficient, smooth, and offer good values. The fact is women are far more practical when it comes to shopping for a vehicle, so you should see that as a complement.

Men have testosterone. How else could you explain the Hummer? ;-)

PS Does it bother you if more women ogle over your ride than men? Not me!

It doesn't really bother me. It feels nice to have something different than a big-ol' pick up truck (as all my neighbors)...but I'm the butt of many jokes that start like...so what's that thing you drivin'?...

I'm shopping for a used CRV and have a question. Do the 1999 EX's have a black spare tire cover or are thye colored to match the body color? Not a very important question, but I really dislike the spare cover matching the body.

Also, is the difference in horsepower from the 1998 (126) to the 1999 (146) noticeable - i.e. should I be looking only at 1999's because of the power increase?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.
  • daveghhdaveghh Member Posts: 495
    njdad,

~The 1st generation crv comes with a black vynel spare tire cover.
~The HP jump for the manual 98 vs the manual 99 , from experience, was not noticeable to me. The 99 has a slightly louder engine. If you want an automatic I suspect the HP difference would make a bigger difference.

In regards to females driving CRV's, here are the close people I know that own CRV's.

    - Me, a male owned a '98 now own a '02
    - My father, of course a male :), owns a '02
    - Good friend, male, owns a '99
    - Sister and brother-in-law: 50:50 driving, 99 CRV
    - Friend, female, '02 CRV

Majority of the people who own and drive CRV's are males!

I remember when the '00 XTerra came out, I wanted it really bad. Since then I realized I like the car like ride of the CRV better then the truck like ride of the XTerra (girl friend owned one). Anyways, most if not all but one person around here are female owners of XTerra's.

I think it has to do where you are in the country...I live close to Chicago and when I go there I see lots of guys driving Cr-V.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, keep in mind that with 120k sales/year for 7 years or so now, as many as you may see, it's still not a representative sample.

Since we have established that the CRV is no chick
mobile then what about age?I am 56 and love my 02
CRV EX.I have three grown sons and they go for the
gas hog 4X4 type vehicles.I had my affair with an Explorer but could not stand the rough ride and lousy gas mileage.Out here in SoCal the Expeditions are crowding the roads with soccer
moms speeding around while talking on cell phones.
A pilot with a soccer mom would be better?

i have the seat rock problem exactly as you describe it...a slight tilt back on acceleration. though not a major issue by any stretch, it is annoying.

i have a built-in-april LX...thought the problem was supposed to be resolved by then, but it clearly is an issue on my vehicle. i have not taken it in yet...i generally like to cluster the issues into one trip to the dealer, and at this time i don't have any other problems...a good thing!

i seem to be getting a click sound on first application of the brakes when starting out cold on a trip. it's an LX, so it's not the ABS sound. don't quite know what to make of that yet.

question for the forum...i read earlier this week about honda extending auto transmission warranties due to problems with their 2000-2001-2002 auto trannies. when they went over the list of vehicles, the crv was not mentioned. does anyone know for certain that the auto trans issues exclude the crv???
  • h1vch1vc Member Posts: 295
With a 6400+lbs curb weight, gvw of 8600lbs, a huge gas v-8 and other factors going against it, 10-13mpg isn't bad at all. Our much lighter and MUCH more aerodynamic supercrew isn't much better. ALso keep in mind they're still being broken in.

brake click appears to be pads moving in the holders. I have it too, always after braking and changing from drive to reverse or reverse to drive.

If it bothers you, take it to the dealer and explain the problem and they may be able to help.

    Good Luck!
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
Wyoreb - Nice to have you back. The brake sound is probably the result of loose pads (as Robmarch described). It is "normal" for the pads to shift a bit until they warm up. As they get warmer, they expand and fit the holder better.

The warranty extension is only for Accord-based vehicles with a specific transmission. For example, my TL is included. Other vehicles using a similar transmission (the Pilot, MDX, and probably the Ody and RL) are not included. So the problem is very specific. Since the CR-V is based on the Civic platform, we can be pretty certain that the tranny is not the same.
  • muckyduckmuckyduck Member Posts: 219
I agree that the pads shifting would cause the 'clunk' sound. I do not agree that when they get warmer, they fit better as an explanation for this sound. After the first 'clunks' and drive a while, I can leave the car running but stopped in Park, then when I shift into reverse or drive and hit the brakes, the 'clunk' makes it's presence known.
There is something else going on here besides just the fact that the brakes expand or contract. AND this 'clunk' did not happen when I first bought the car - it was many miles before the 'clunk' started. I don't expect an answer to this - I doubt any owner really knows what the answer is and I doubt Honda is going to admit there is a problem.
This is the only car I've owned or been a passenger that the brakes do this 'clunk'.

Any body has experience buying keyless entry from Hondacuraworld.com? Does this thing need installation for 02 CRV? It costs about $89 at hondacuraworld.com.

    Thanks.
  • robmarchrobmarch Member Posts: 482
mine clunked from day one, and my 96 altima occasionally clunks too. I think they can put pad compound or something on the back of the pads to keep them from sliding around as much, if you're interested. it should be a free fix, under warranty, if it works.
  • daveghhdaveghh Member Posts: 495
    qgu,

I have the 2002 LX and I added the keyless entry system for about the same price at a similar web site.

You have to remove the compartment below the radio. You unscrew one tap screw, and pull very hard to pop out the compartment. Then the directions will tell you which wire to plug into the box they provide you. Plug it in, and pop the compartment back on, screw in the screw and you are finished. The only hard part was popping the compartment off. I put a pair of those yellow dish washing gloves to give my hands more friction with the plastic compartment, it worked great. It felt like I was going to break the compartment but I didn't.

    Here are the Honda directions....

    Good luck!

I've had the clunk ... actually more of a dull popping sound ... when I shift manually from Reverse to 1st (manual 2002 LX) since Day 1 on my new LX CR-V. But thanks to this forum, I was prepared and haven't worried.

I'm more irritated by the little things that began to crop up around 1000 mi. (I'm now at 2700), like a persistent auto driver's window up-down problem, windshield washer reservoir that won't stay filled, door hinges and brake pedal that squeak and won't respond to WD-40, intermittent whining from a loose belt somewhere, etc. Puny, stupid little things that I didn't think I would experience with a Honda (first time owner of one). I'm saving it all up for one trip to the dealer, since I did not buy locally.

You don't have to take your CR-V back to the dealer you bought it from for warranty work. You can take it to any Honda dealer.

When I reached the 8000 mile mark or so on my 2002 crv ex I noticed that the maint. required light comes on at start up..flashes for a few times..approx 3 seconds..then goes off. I checked the oil, it looks new, very clean and at the top..last serviced at 5000 miles...is there a reset switch or something, I am assuming this is a service light and is reset by dealer mechanics when they perform oil changes etc...thanks for any info.
  • frenchieefrenchiee Member Posts: 11
at 10000 the light will stay on. Look in your owners manual and they tell you how to reset it. Something like, press mileage button in while starting the car and hold for 10 secs. Not sure though so check the book.
  • qguqgu Member Posts: 93
Thank you very much. Looks like I am going to skip. I do not want to damage my vehicle.

    Thanks again.
  • wyorebwyoreb Member Posts: 45
robmarch, varmint...thanks for your assessment of the brake click. didn't mean to start another round of discussion on it. i've seen it on the board before, but didn't start experiencing it until about the 2000 mile mark. (i'm at 3500 total).

as long as it is "normal", i'm not inclined to have a dealer spend a bunch of time trying to find it. my past warranty experiences indicate that dealer time taking things apart for noises often generates new quirks and noises.

the seat rock is another story. it is annoying, and i will direct the dealer to the TSB at the first visit back.

arkydog, my both of my front doors squeak, but again, that's minor stuff not worthy of a separate visit. if anyone has the name of a grease or lube that will work (wd-40 will not?), let us know.

overall, still very pleased. phenomenal gas mileage...worst tank was 27.2 mpg, and more typical has been 28.5. do get some road noise on certain road surfaces, but again, if you read the board, you have to expect some of it.

btw, the ody was one of the vehicles having the warranty extended. glad to see the crv was not included. my automatic transmission is super smooth, and it's well matched with the 2.4L engine.
  • tomsrtomsr Member Posts: 325
Owners manual page 70 says "between 8000 and 10000
miles indicator will light for 2 seconds when ignition is first turned on and then flash for 10 seconds" at 10000 it will stay on till maintenance is done(dealer resets it)
  • newhondamannewhondaman Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the response guys...I read the owners manual after posting and read what to do..no problem...I too, have the annoying little front driver seat rocking on acceleration and deceleration....as for the brake clunking..mine doesnt do that as of yet..but you can buy a silicone type product that is placed on the back side of your disk brake pads that keep them from chattering...or maybe even clunking?...might do the trick....
  • njdadnjdad Member Posts: 9
I'm looking for a used CRV and wanted to conduct an informal poll: Is it better to buy from a private seller (where you can see the maintenance records and size up the owner) or from a dealer (where the "certify" the cars, whatever that means)???
  • jfigueroa1jfigueroa1 Member Posts: 209
I bought the same thing from another net site
and you do not have to worries about breaking any thing the compartment is a lil hard but not extreamly hard. after removing it the instruction will tell you what wires to plug it to. the putting it back to gether is easy, the programin piece of cake.it took me around 15min and the result i love that thing.by having the key less entry you avoid scraching the door with the key when you are in a big rush or like when it rain.you can open the glass door the big hatch dr. door or all doors it is very nice do not worrier about the compartment under the radio.
  • tomsrtomsr Member Posts: 325
Dealers add a big chunk to certify used vehicles.
You can get a Mechanical Breakdown Policy for just about any late model vehicle and may cost
$1500 bucks depending on coverage. The advantage to private parties is big savings from dealers prices and you may have maintenance records too.
If you are a gambler a used HONDA is a good bet
and it is unlikely anything major will go wrong
before 100,000 miles.Just my experience though.
