This is one is a black Sport with a hard top. Not sure if it is a auto or 5-speed, or how many miles it has. It has aftermarket wheels. He's asking about $17K. Thanks. - Jefffer2
If you are young, you can easily look forward to getting 5 or 6 years out of a new car, and this would be a good one. You will not have to worry about, or experience the pain that is an $800 repair bill when you are stretching to pay the loan. Ooops, there goes all your fun for two months!
As for how much you are giving up, it is the stuff they wrap around the motor that makes a Jeep a Jeep. Tell you what, how about I give you a Cavalier with the 4.0 motor for the price of the SE? Would you take that? I'll tell you, the girls won't care what kind of engine your brand-new Jeep has, they'll be happy to ride around in it. And a new one will definitely do more for you there than used, in that department, and let's not downplay the importance of that group's judgment...

thanks for the advice. I'll clarify for those who questioned it. When you order the 30" tires, you have to get the Dana axle (which personally I wanted anyway). Its really the Dana axle that you can't get ABS with. I'm assuming there are mechanical reasons for this but if anyone knows different, I'd be interested to know.
Like bhowell2 said, I don't think you can get the Dana44 and 3.73 axle gearing.

Only negative about 6 cyc is the extra cost. The 4 cyc will do just fine off-road and in the city but it can suck on the highway in winds and on hills. You may struggle going up hills. You may have problems holding 65 or 70mph depending on the wind. Some days will be just fine though. Personally I will never own a 4 cyc again and would rather walk but it may work for some people who don't have such a heavy foot.

17k for a 97 sounds high. I have not heard too many bad things but I think there were a good number of TSBs and recalls. You can check here

I'AM ABOUT TO BUY A 1990 4CLY, 5-SPEED, WHIT HARD TOP. I BEEN READING THAT THE 4CYL ARE VERY SLOW, A WHANT TO KNOW IF IT'S TRUE. IS $5.000 A GOOD, OR A BAD DEAL FOR A 1990?
I WHAT TO KNOW IF THE 6CYL ARE MORE $$ ON GAS THEN THE 4CYL. WHAT COULD THE DIFFERENCE BE?
WHAT ON EARTH ABS MEANS?
CAN A GET BIG TIRES ON A 4CLY?
IS THE 6CYL JEEP MORE $$$ THEN THE 4CYL?
COULD I GET A BETTER DEAL FOR ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR A NEWER JEEP.
IS $5.000 A GOOD PRICE FOR A 1900 4CYL?
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP !
LET ME KNOW ANYTHING EALSE I SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUYING A JEEP.

For those of you with some technical questions I suggest trying www.jeepsunlimited.com and going to the Wrangler forum. Post questions and you'll get alot of good answers there. The people who post regurarly there know there stuff and are all about jeeps so check it out!
Thelma and I got back from our business trip to Chattanooga not long ago. I missed you guys!
I was able to get on the Net for a few minutes last night while I was still in Chattanooga and got caught up on the posts.
Thelma got 17.4 mpg going down to Chattanoga and 17.8 mpg coming home. I was a good boy and set my cruise control for 65 mph, even though the speed limit on Tennessee interstates is 70 mph.
I guess that's about all she is going to do for gas mileage, cause she ought to be broken in by now. She had 2500 miles on her when we started the trip and has a little over 3000 on her now.
I hope to see a little improvement in gas mileage when she goes on Mobil 1 oil at 5000 miles. I know my '94 Z28 picked up a little on gas mileage when I switched it over to Mobil 1.
The EPA estimate for highway is 19 mpg, and I thought most vehicles got at least the EPA estimate. That was true of the last few vehicles that I bought.
Hey, I am not going to lose any sleep over the difference between 17.5 mpg and 19.0 mpg. I drive about 23,000 miles per year, and figuring $1.40 per gallon for gas, the annual expenditure for gas will be less than $150.00 more for the 17.5 mpg vs. the 19.0 mpg.
It's good to be back! Ross Allen was glad to see "Grandpa," and I was glad to see him. (For those of you who don't know him, Ross Allen is my "Granddog." Check him out at http://members.aol.com/tjoh298765/raj.html)
Thanks to those of you who kept me in your prayers as I traveled.

Best of luck and happy keeping, Brian
tsjay--Chattanooga is a fun town. I purchased a CJ-5 from Prebul Jeep there in ~74 (I lived there for 3 years and have family there). I wouldn't be surprised if you mpg kept inching up until you plateau between 10 and 20 thousand miles.

Parents like to think of their "children" as being nothing less than perfect, so that's why I would like to be able to brag a little about Thelma's gas mileage, not because of the slight difference in annual fuel cost.
Chattanooga is a really nice place, Steve, like you said. I'll bet you hated to leave there. I go there probably five or six times a year.
Take care
tsjay
Hey, you are so into offroading, that I'll bet you can answer my question. At a Cracker Barrel in Chattanooga today I saw a TJ with locking hubs. What's up with that? I know it must be after market stuff, right? What's the advantage of locking hubs? This Jeep had a winch and some real agressive tread on its tires, so I assume the owner is a big time offroader.

I reserve the right to put my own spin on the problems, but the facts will be accurate. For instance, I might say that I had an engine blow up, but that's ok, and it isn't a big deal. The fact that my engine blew would be accurate, but my thinking of it as being no big deal would be something you might not agree with. Now, I hope you realize that I was being silly here. I would definitely think that it was a "big deal" if I had an engine blow up.
Thelma has a small place on her black hardtop where the paint has peeled off. This spot is just above the windshield right in front of the driver's seat. The underlying plastic or vinyl or whatever the top is made of is white. So, Thelma has a white spot on the front edge of her hardtop just above the windshield. At first I though it was just a spec of bird crap, but it was actually a spot where the paint had flaked off. There is no sign of "trauma" to the top- no scratch or any kind of indication that something had flown into that spot and caused the paint to come off.
I will take her to the dealer where I bought her the first chance I get. It's forty miles from home, so it won't be easy to get over there during their business hours.
I also have a confession to make. Thelma has a run in her paint on the right rear corner of her body. I never mentioned this before, but in keeping with my intention to give the good and the bad, I have to tell you guys about it. I don't think I will have them do anything about it, because I am afraid that it might look worse when they are done than it does now. (It is not very noticeable, and I had owned Thelma several days before I even saw it.) I think of it as kind of a "birthmark," a distinguishing feature.
Oh well, now I have done it. You guys know the extent of my problems with my Jeep so far. If the top is repaired to my satisfaction, then it will not be a major thing as far as I am concerned. I just hope that this one spot doesn't indicate future trouble with other places where the paint flakes off. I'm sure they would repaint the whole top, if it turns out that the paint job is defective.
Later, everyone

I still love my Jeep! (and I HAVE hugged her today)
JU rules except for all of the flame wars. How are your mods coming? Anything new?
justagirl2
4 cyc are slow on the highway if there are hills or a good wind. Around the city it will do fine. It depends on the driver also. I like having my power to drive the speed I want and to be able to pass someone. You can put bigger tires on and it will hurt your performance some but not kill it. The 6 will cost more than the 4. I don't see much of a difference in gas mileage between the two. $5000 does not sound too bad. Shop around, check the classifieds on the net and in your local paper and check the dealerships to get a good idea on price. Make sure a Jeep is what you want. It is a lot different than other vehicles. Make sure you get fuel injection, which I believe is on 90' and up. Good Luck
Tsjay- Glad you had a good and safe trip. The board is not the same without you.
I bet if you drive 55mph you would get your 19 or real close. I can only do that for about a mile before I start to go crazy. I have a big paint run on the right side of the hood. It is about 3" by 3". I was going to fix it but then I tagged my flare and fender and put a nice scratch on my flare. So I blew it off for now. The paint run is not very noticeable, unless you look at it just right. You don't have to go to the dealer you purchased your Jeep from. You can have your Jeep serviced at any dealer. I am sure you know this, but just in case.
This new software SUCKS. I wish they would of stayed with the old one. It sucked when it first came out and it still sucks. I don't even bother with spell checker. It seems to screw things up more than what they were. I don't use anything or copy and paste to word or outlook. I feel a little better now.
Thanks for your help!
I still don't know if i should buy thiat 1990 jeep or if i should wait for a newer one.
i been looking but i have not found a better deal for a newer .

This rack is incredible cool. I only got the basket put together. I read throught the instructions and it was a bit overwhelming at first, but after looking at it closely, looks like it'll be fairly easy. The fit and finish quality is very high in my opinion. Well, just though i'd let you know.
Have a good weekend. Talk at you all later.

Glad you got your racks in... Let me know when you get it on and how you like it!

Well, the mods are coming, slowly but shurely. I"m looking at getting a 3" Teraflex Lift with teraflex shock, 33's with Rockcrawler wheels, an SYE and CV driveshaft! Plus my brushguard just came in! YEA! Talk to you later dude.
Let us know what's going on.

Tell us about your first few days with the Jeep! You were going out of town the last I heard from you, and you were hoping to have the headlight problem taken care of while you were gone.
tsjay
Have you hugged your Jeep today?
The service desk said they couldn't figure out the reason. They put a new fuse in, it worked, end of story. So I will get an inspection sticker tomorrow (I need to get a picture of it with that big red "R" sticker though, just for posterity). I have one last suspicion which is that it will blow when the Lojack is activated, because that is the one thing the Lojack guy might have done above and beyond what the dealer could check. And he wouldn't notice, b/c the Lojack has an internal battery to keep it bleeping even if no battery power. Who knows. At this point, who cares?
As for your problem, part of my attraction to the Jeep is that it's like a good pair of jeans. A few dents, scratches, peels, etc. just don't detract from a Jeep like they do just about anything else.

Be sure and post to tell us all about your impressions of the new Jeep and how your friends and family liked him/her. When you come up with a name, let us know that too. We musn't refer to our Jeep as an "it."

Everyone loves my Jeep but my mother, sho hates it as much as you love it. She is convinced it is a piece of $@#!, a deathtrap, and doesn't "understand why someone as smart as her son wouldn't buy an Acura." My father, OTOH, would have tried to "borrow" it when I went to pick it up from the dealer, if it wasn't for that Lojack. We had a CJ-7 when I was younger, and it died an untimely death before we had any fun with it, and thanks to my mothe, was replaced by a wood-paneled Chrysler station wagon. FYI, my parents are divorced, and my dad's second wife loves the Jeep. Draw your own conclusions.
I still am drawing blanks on a name, though.
-cwk.
-cwk.
I'm from Mayberry, so I don't know anything about that stuff. And, you're right, pal, I am glad I don't have to worry about my Thelma Jane being kidnapped.
So your dad and stepmother are crazy about your Jeep? That's good. I know how nice it is for friends and relatives to make a big deal over a new vehicle. Makes you feel real good.
Maybe you'll get a chance to try her out in the snow before winter is over. No such luck here, though. We have had about four little one to two inch snows this winter, and all they are good for is getting the roads sloppy and Thelma dirty.
Later, ckingsbury.

Goducks1, I thought you were back among us, but you've sure been quiet the last few days.
POST, PEOPLE! Old tsjay gets lonesome for his buddies!

Before Steve yells at me for going off-topic, the deal with Lojack is that the transmitter is about the size of a box of kitchen matches, and the installers vary where they put them. Plus, they don't advertise that the car has one installed, the argument being that the crook won't know and will (hopefully) be collared in the driver's seat. In most cases cops know roughly where to start looking for a stolen car, and Lojack just makes it a lot easier and thus worth their time.
Funny thing is, what worries me most where I live isn't theft but vandalism, particularly in soft-top season. And there's really no kind of system that can prevent that, except maybe a Rottweiler

I trust you didn't learn that the hard way:-).

First post, and... hopefully first new 2001 Sahara on Monday.
My question is this: I have seen aftermarket rear bumper replacements (2 so far) which have a built-in (2.5in?) "standard Reese" receiver. I really like the way these look and want to get one for my new Jeep. I do not want the bolt-on-under-the-existing-bumper type. Is there an online source for these, or do I need to go buy a magazine and start getting paper cuts or what? I am in the DFW area if this helps.
Also, I am planning on buying from CARMAX as they have the best price right now. I have been to the website where many others have complained about USED Carmax autos. Any thoughts on this?
Membrain- I haven't ordere from either of these, but they have a lot of stuff to look at. You could just use it as a reference and go to a local parts shop and order through them, I guess.

Just a thought, but you know that the high re-sale value of a Wrangler works against you when you are trying to buy one. If there's any way you can swing a new one, then the high re-sale value will be in your favor if you ever want to trade it in or sell it.
Most people won't go as far in the hole to get a vehicle they want as I will. I know there are constraints on how much you can spend, so maybe a new one is out of the question.
This is just my own personal opinion, of course, but I would rather spend the same amount of money for a used Sport with plenty of original warranty left than for a new SE. I would insist on speaking with the previous owner, though, to be sure that the used Sport was a good vehicle.
My prejuidice against the four cylinder is strictly because of my highway driving. If you won't be doing long commutes or taking long trips, then the SE is probably going to be all you need. Test drive one for yourself, but the four cylinder is just not adequate for the highway. You cannot overcome headwind or go up a long hill very easily with the four cylinder. Passing power is another factor on two lane roads, and, also, getting up to speed and blending with the traffic on entrance ramps for interstates would be a problem.
Also, if you ever want to lift your Jeep and go with some big tires, the 4.0 L I-6 would support this much better.
Someone once said here in this group that they have heard people with the SE's say that they wished they had gotten the Sport, but that they have NEVER heard of anyone with a Sport say that they wished that they had gotten the SE.
Never the less, if you are going to use the Jeep only for local driving and some offroading, then the SE probably is the way to go. The great thing is that the looks of the SE and the Sport are identical, except for the Sport badging.
Anyway, let us know how your search is going.

Again, hopefully my TJ will come in as quickly as yours did!!!! That's all for now, I'll keep you posted and will check in Wednesday after I've placed my order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!
That sienna with the black top ought to be really sharp too! You gotta post pics when she comes in!!
Thelma's original scheduled production date was only 12 days from the day the order was placed! They took one of those down weeks the week she was supposed to get built, though, so it turned out to be 19 days from order entry until she was built. I got her later that same week, since I am close enough to Toledo that they didn't have to use rail shipment. I had my Thelma in three weeks and two days.
Where do you live, tjy? It could actually take longer for transit time than it did to get your Jeep built.
I know you ain't gonna get much sleep for the next few weeks! Are you going to call the 800 number and check on her progress?
That's a great deal you got too! Did you have to haggle much, or did they just give you their best deal right up front?
You are going to be one happy dude when she comes in! Thelma is more fun to drive than any other vehilce that I have ever owned.
Now, don't disappear on us. Keep us posted on how the wait is going and what you find out about her production date.
I am curious about where you live, if you don't mind telling. If you are close enough to Toledo to avoid rail shipment, you could have your Jeep REAL QUICK.
tsjay
Have you hugged your Jeep today?
I live just outside of Washington, D.C. in Maryland, so I'm assuming my TJ will come by rail. I don't have that 800 number yet, will the dealer give it to me when I place my order? If not, I'll have you email it to me or post it here. Of course I'll be checking on it all the time and you're right, I won't get much sleep waiting for it to come in!
I didn't have to haggle at all acutally, I just went in, told them about what was being offered online and it didn't matter to me who made the holdback, a dealer in cyberspace or them, and if they wanted to sell me a TJ, it had to be on my terms or I'd go back to the net....they were happy to accept my terms and I think it's a fair deal for everyone.
I absolutely can't wait for my TJ to get here and Wednesday seems like it will never come!!!
Anyway, I'll be sure to keep you all posted and as soon as I can after I take delivery, I'll be sure to post some pics of my new baby!
Your dealer can probably get more accurate info than what they will give you on the 800 number. I have been told that they cover their butts on the 800 number and add some extra time to the true projected date, so that people won't get bent out of shape if it takes longer than they really think it will.
Hey, if you're interested, you can actually get the "time of birth" right down to the minute after she gets put together. My dealer laughed when I asked him to find that out for me, and he said that I was the first one that had ever asked for that. He got the info for me, though. My Thelma was born at 12:13 Am on December 5th. I was able to confirm that on the 800 number, so the dealer and DC were giving me the same story. I was afraid they would just toss out a time to humor me.
The time of birth is actually the time that the final inspection is completed and the vehicle is pronounced fit for shipment.
There seems to be several of you Wrangler IV guys around the DC area. I can't remember exactly who they are, but I believe "shuggins" is in the area, and "truebeliever" is at Luke AFB in MD, which may not be considered the DC area, but if it's in MD, it can't be too far from DC. I swear, it seems like there was at least one more poster from that area.
I have never seen a sienna with the black top, or even a picture of one, but I am definitely a black top kind of guy. I think every body color that is available on a Jeep would look better with a black top than with the tan top.
I wonder why I never see sienna Jeeps around here? It is definitely a beautiful color. Do you see any in your area?
Email me sometime or chat with me on Instant Mesaage (I am tjoh298765 on IM). I'll hold your hand and help you get through these next weeks.
