Is the idea to remove the screws holding the fuse block and get to its back where the cigar lighter wire can be moved from #19 to another, unused fuse?
Yes, and fuse #18 (next to it), should be an 'always live' spare. The two spare feeds, that may or may not be there, are usually tucked behind the loom on the right hand side where it goes up toward the windshield.
Before you do anything with the fuse block make sure you disconnect the battery.
1. Military vehicles. Someone was looking for a military vehicle/trailer. Go to the Military Vehicle Preservation Association website www.mvpa.org and start there. It's a group of military vehicle collectors and they are always selling stuff.
2. Jeep colors. Solar Yellow is back. At least for the remainder of the 2005 production run which is going to be very short. As someone said, at least DC listens to its customers.
3. Delivery of new vehicle. For what it is worth, my (fairly loaded) new Flame Red '05 X with the Rocky Mountain package was ordered in mid-April and arrived at my east coast dealer in three (3) weeks. Don't ask how, but it sure surprised the heck out of me and my checkbook!
4. $$$$$. Also, for what it's worth, the dealer at that time sold me the vehicle for $100 over invoice, MINUS $1,000 Chrysler cash rebate, MINUS $1,000 for financing thru DC Financial (if I want, I only need to make four payments and then I can pay it off, satisfying the rebate requirements), and MINUS $500 for prior military service (in lieu of the military rebate, they had $500 off for law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel).
5. Tuffy Overhead Security Console. I have one word to describe Mr. Bell's tutorial on installing it: AWESOME! Thank you.
6. Spot lights. Thanks for the help on wiring the windshield mount spotlights. It went smooth and I did not need to drill. Also, installed the RB1 Nav system and it works great (if you do this, order the special bracket ($20) designed just for Wranglers..I think it's a shock brace for off-roading).
7. Build sheet. I don't know what it is, but it is a long printout with a whole bunch of codes and I found it stuffed under one of the seats.

I have an 04 Wrangler "X" and it has an unusual power socket, (it is next to the cigarette lighter socket). I connect one of those stand alone behind the headrest DVD player for my daughter whenever we cruise around. Guess what, when the ignition is off, it is still powered. I wonder if your 2002 has the same setup as an "04", meaning a lighter socket and power point next to each other, I heard Wranglers had an interior upgrade in "03"

Then regards to finance, I would go through your own bank. Your bank wants your money and business for life, and as for the finance manager at a dealership, he will probable only see you once in his life.

My '04 Unlimited is set up like that - with 2 power sources, one switched and one not. I LOVE having the 2 power sources - my other half can charge his cell phone while I plug in either the laptop or the GPS. Or I can use both the GPS and the laptop at the same time.
However my '98 Sport only has the swiched power source. That one usually has the Roady plugged into it - or the GPS if I don't have the Roady. I don't know what year they changed this.
Thanks for replying mac24. I'm positive of the two sensors you're referring to. I now know the cps is good, however, I'm confused about the results of the test I performed. I unplug the coil rail, on the plug opposite the sensor the #2 pin is common. (4 pins total) With one lead of a test light on common and the engine turning over, touching the other end of the test light to the remaining three pins should make the light flash. (I think) Only #1 and #4 flash, pin #3 stays on. This leads me to believe whatever coil this pin powers is not firing the plugs.Would two dead plugs prevent this engine from starting? The electrical diagram I'm looking at is what I'm using to troubleshoot this thing as I have not worked on an engine for alot of years. 20 or so. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Anyway I made my Wrangler as my daily driver again, it is much more fun, especially with the occasional shortcuts and bad roads here in Riverside/San Bernardino, I only drive 35 miles rountrip everyday, mostly Canyon roads.

Well, the real bottom line is what the interest rate is. My bank could not come close to the 1.9 percent financing I got on my Rubicon. And we got 0 percent on our Grand Cherokee.
when i bought mine last september,, I got a $1000 rebate for using chrysler credit,,, their interest rate was 6%,
the salesperson told me that i had to keep it with chrysler credit for 90 days,,,
I don't have any idea what the 90 days was all about, i bet its just so you get into a routine of making those payments,, then forget or procrastinate about looking for a better deal.

Can anyone suggest a good hood lock for the wrangler? After two years of reading this board and waiting to pass along my Camry to my daughter, I finally purchased a Rubicon this morning. The dealer says they have a lock that includes an ignition cutoff. No price on that yet. Would prefer just a lock as the dealer setup needs the key to start the car. Two keys to start just doesn't make sense.
As you know, the coil rail uses three coils to fire six cylinders in pairs, and #2 / #5 is one pairing, which ties in with the codes you have. The fact that one coil isn't being triggered does indicate that the fault lies in the triggering source, rather than the coil rail itself.
You seem to have done a good job of diagnosing the problem. There's still an outside chance that either one of the CPS's are faulty and not issuing a signal to the PCM at the correct time, which would cause the PCM to suspend triggering on that cycle. However, you'd need the services of a competent tech with a DRB scan tool to check that, i.e. a trip to the dealer's service dept.

However, they're easily defeated with a large screwdriver or small crowbar. Personally, I'd rather lose the battery alone, than lose the battery and get some hood or grille damage.
I guess it depends on where you live, as much as anything, as to what the risk is. These days though, the value of the gas in your tank is likely to higher than a standard battery under the hood! :surprise:
A friend is interested in purchasing an '05 Wrangler RME. She's aware that she can get the "employee pricing for the public" deal, but is curious if she can further negotiate the price down from EP. I know this was just recently discussed, but I didn't get the feeling there was a unanimous answer. The salesman stated that the EP was $2-300 below invoice. Any opinions?

Nor is there likely to be...............you can read my opinion a few posts back.
However, negotiation is really up to you. If you accept the price quoted when you're told "We can't go lower", then there's no negotiation. If you say "I've done my research and I'd like to pay less than that, in fact I think $XX,000 is a fair price so I think I'd better talk to dealer X in the next town", then you've started to negotiate. If you have done your research, and the price you have in mind is an achievable one, I doubt that you'll reach your car. If they haven't phoned you in two days they were telling the truth, and they really won't move on the price.

The powerpoint will work without the key being in the ignition at all - it leads directly to the battery (unswitched). My other half uses it to charge his cell phone on our drive home and one night he left it plugged in. It wasn't enough to drain the battery, luckily!
I don't suppose you happen to make some of those "shortcuts" include some dirt roads, do you? Or happen to spend some Saturday mornings wandering around the mountains? A few years ago they were doing bridge work on I-5 around Gorman and it often had traffic backed up. It was great fun to take a couple of dirt roads and cut through Hungry Valley OHV area on the way home. And I had a good reason to do it - it was faster than spending an hour or more crawling through the backup.
Do you happen to know if the dirt road that goes from (more or less) Palm Springs up to Big Bear is open? I've never taken it - only seen it on the map, but I've always wondered what it was like.
I just finished "window-shopping" the Wrangler she's interested in on the Jeep website, and the employee discount price does indeed look good (good enough that I doubt she'll try to negotiate it down further). I will double-check the Edmunds TMV and compare it to the Jeep employee discount, though. She hadn't really considered the LWB until I mentioned it today, so she may come over tomorrow and give mine a good look-over (without the pressure of looking at one at a dealership), but I think a SWB will suit her needs well. Just a short quick question... might remember me from a couple weeks back... I'm still lookin to get a wrangler, just trying to figure out whats best to do with my current car. My question is, how long will a rag top last if you leave it on year round and it goes through normal wear of somewhat mild winters and nice summers. I live in North Carolina so we don't have extreme weather really either way in either season. the reason i was wondering is because if i do end up and get this wrangler, i would like to know how soon i should invest in a hard top. but if a rag top will last a few years than most likely i will stick to that for a while...
As the originator of the Rubi? & Stick v. Auto I am happy to tell everyone that provided info and followed the story line that I was very very lucky. Upon leaving the Jeep dealership where I was looking at the Rubi I noticed a used 05 Unlimited. Being pressed for time I did not stop. When the salesman contacted me about my intentions with the Rubi I asked him about the used unlimited. After a little jockeying he told me that it belonged to the Buick dealer next door. I immediately contacted the Buick dealership and ultimately purchased a "used" (169 miles) auto 2005 unlimited for what I have calculated to be $4K under the current EP pricing. Thank you lord for spoiled kids and rich father's for this vehicle was bought for the son on the 2nd of June and traded in on the 10th because it was too small.
Now I'm looking forward to finding the 4 x 4 roads in my neck of the world.
Talk about luck! You'll love the Unlimited - the extra length makes a big difference with hauling things around, and they aren't as boucy or skittish in the wind (and it was really windy today going across the Mojave Desert. Am I ever glad to be back in the mountains!).
If you like trail/tavel guides, there are a couple of books about the Sierras. You might want to pick up "High Sierra SUV Trails Vol. 1" which covers the east side. I also like Tony Huegel's books, though they are a little older (don't know if they've been updated recently or not). He's written several on various parts of California. One of the SoCal books I've used is "Backcountry Adventures Southern California" - not only does it have good write-ups on the trails, it also gives lat/lon coordinates so you can download waypoints to a GPS ahead of time (this seems to be the current new trend for trail books). It is amazing how many trails and beautiful places there are within SoCal.
I've used the SoCal Auto Club county maps for navigating - they have many dirt roads on them with accurate mileage indicated. Until I got my GPS I used them often as my only source of information (hey, there's a dirt road indicated there that parallels Hwy 58 and will avoid the mess at Four Corners! Let's try it...). Another good source of information are the National Forest maps (Las Padres has a free map that specifically identifies the 4x4 and dirt bike trails). BLM also has excellent maps if you are wandering around the desert.
And there's always driving on the beach near Pismo - I think it's about the only place left in California where you can drive on the sand.
The soft top will last you a good long time if you take care of it properly. My dad sold the soft top of his '84 CJ (Bestop replacement not factory) to my uncle in the early 90s is still around but it hasn't gotten use every single year. There's a ton of good info at Proper Auto Care on how to maintain the top for a healthy appearance for several years. If I lived down south I'd have no worries about going with just a soft-top. The modern tops are SOOOO much better than the way it used to be.
Yeah, I knew this day would come. Actually, I think it came a long time ago, and the stealership lied because they didn't want to fix it. At any rate the general din got louder a couple months ago and sure enough the exhaust manifold on my 98 4.0L TJ is cracked. It's not cracked at the #6 port, though, or anywhere up near the engine block, it's cracked where the two intakes join together on their way to the cat. Been quoted ~$700 including labor and trust me I'm not about to pay that. It's not $700 noisy in my book.

My manifold was cracked in a couple of places; my shop and I agreed that it would have to be removed to weld it properly. I figured that I might as well replace it while I had it all apart. I thought about going with the manifold Mac suggested, but I ended up installing a Banks Torque Tube. With installation(I was really pressed for time) the final cost was $645. I'm planning on keeping my Sahara for at least 5-10 more years so I thought the amount was reasonable.
Well, I tried to do the re-wiring at the rear of the fuse block but the harness was so tight that I was unable to get good access - afraid to do anything I could not see well. What I did was this: I cut the hot wiring to the lighter and insulated the source. I spliced into the wiring for the courtesy and dome lights at one of the kick panel courtesy lights and connected it to the lighter - working fine now - hot all of the time. The lighter should not of course, still be used for cigars because of the light wiring, but I don't smoke. Thanks for all that contributed to solution of this problem.
i was given a jeep by an old freind and he put a 4" lift on it and drove about 200 yards and had a problem. Q: what could he have tore up in that distance? I don't think any adjustments were made underneath. The guy i got the jeep from said maybe transfer case and trans. could this be right? and can a transfer case be rebuilt in the driveway or does it require special tools? you seem to be the man for lift Q?

With all these rebates, my other half is thinking that perhaps we should buy something sooner, rather than later, to replace the '98. This time the choice is totally his - I'm leaving it all to him. He does want me to be comfortable driving whatever he gets, so we went looking at trucks today. Our last stop was a Jeep dealer where we test drove a Grand Cherokee Limited with the Hemi. As we drove up I saw a bright green Unlimited Rubicon Hard top on the lot. I couldn't believe it - they had it priced at 26,000! If it had been an auto instead of a manual, it might have found itself parked in my driveway tonight. We're still on the fence - there's nothing wrong with the Sport, now that the A/C has been recharged. It probably has a leak somewhere, but I'm not sure I really want to try to find it at the moment. And it is cheaper to run (better gas mileage) than the Unlimited.
By the way, it cost us $800 to get the exhaust manifold changed on the Sport several years ago, and I considered myself lucky - the dealerships were all asking over $1000 for it. There's a TSB out on the manifold bolts - I found that out when I went looking for something on it.
I have definitely found out that our good gas mileage is due to our all highway, big elevation change commute. This past week I was in Vegas did enough driving there to have a tank of gas that was more than half city driving (first time ever). I got 13 plus mpg. Am I ever glad our commute is almost all highway!
Ron did great, he got through a lot of places that I would have had problems with my first time out when I still had my GSA's on. He's got 31" BFG AT's on, and we both aired down a little.
I didn't air down my first time out with my new tires (33's) , later found out that Sam's put 40 lbs in them when they were installed. I'm a believer in airing down now, Nicole climbed hills alot better this time

Finally did it. I figured I would be a guinea pig on tires. I got 4 Toyo Open Country A/T's and 4 new black American Racing rims. Had the raised white lettering turned inward and removed the Am. Racing emblem from the center of the hub. So I no longer have the chrome wheels the Freedom Edition came with and Rosie is almost all black and red. Just need to find black headlight beezels (sp) to replace the chrome ones.. I did the search feature on our site and it seems I might be the only person on the site with Toyos. It will be an experiment. Go easy on me Tom. They may prove to be a good tire for my purposes. Big difference right away. Especially on the highway and in heavy rain. Only cost me $40.00 after selling the chrome rims and trading out the GSA,s at the tire store. Funny reaction from friends who are not Jeepers. They strongly dislike the Am. Racing rims and the lack of chrome. Of course these are the same people who thought I was crazy to get a Jeep in the first place:) Go Easy, John

Btw, I don't think anyone actually makes black head light bezels, though I don't know why. I would buy some in a second. What most do is take them off, scuff them up with some sand paper and paint them with Krylon black.
This weekend I gave my 12 y.o. boy a couse in soft top removal. He did one side all by himself. I think he's thinking when he turns 16 he might be driving it! But I keep telling him, no way. I don't believe Jeeps or any true SUVs are safe for young drivers. So, then he asks about our old 300z sitting in the garage. Nope, won't be driving that either! I told him we'll get him a nice 4 cylinder Honda Accord in any color he likes. :P
Has anyone ever successfully gotten DC to cover the exhaust manifold? I just got off the phone with them and they gave me the cold shoulder. Told me there's not even a TSB about it. Cracked manifold? On the Jeep 4.0L? Never heard of that before. Are you sure? Well, denied anyway, your mileage is too high.
I'm gonna call and bug them again. I reckon they want my next car to be a Honda.
While it's always nice to get something free I think you're being a little optimistic expecting to have a replacement manifold fitted to your seven year old high mileage and out of warranty Wrangler.
DC have certainly replaced them under warranty, mine was done at around 30K, and as there's nothing unusual about the repair there's no need for a TSB.
I hardly think the failure of an exhaust manifold after all this time warrants the purchase of a Honda. :confuse:
OK, I think tonight we are removing the hard top from my Jeep. I've scowered the internet and shopping sites, but none seem to publish what the weight of the Unlimited hard top is. I thought I remember reading on this board was 150 lbs.. is this right?
...just want to make sure I have enough people.. so far I've got 2 helping me. Last thing I want to happen is to find out it's too heavy and we drop it.. :surprise:
2 people could carry the weight without any problem, but its very awkward, we had 4 on mine and it was easy. i think with just 2 people you would find it wanting to tip forward / back and possibly dropping it.
I was being a little facetious. Hondas are soulless appliances, with the exception of the S2000.
I was in a bad mood with that earlier post, had just gotten off the phone with them. I wouldn't expect a cracked manifold to be replaced on a 7 year old Jeep if it were a unique circumstance. But it's not. It's every single Jeep with the 4.0L engine made before 2000, be it Wrangler, Cherokee or GC. Everybody gets it eventually. That is very, very lame and I do feel DC should have done something about it, much like Ford did with the 3.7L V6 head gasket meltdown, which both I and an ec girlfriend suffered. Instead they blow everybody off and deny it's a problem.
I am PO'd enough I doubt I would buy another DC product anytime soon.

I was hoping for something more secure. Back when I drove '70 model cars I lost a few batteries. Was trying to avoid that again.

If you say "I've done my research and I'd like to pay less than that, in fact I think $XX,000 is a fair price so I think I'd better talk to dealer X in the next town", then you've started to negotiate. If you have done your research, and the price you have in mind is an achievable one, I doubt that you'll reach your car. If they haven't phoned you in two days they were telling the truth, and they really won't move on the price.

I don't suppose you happen to make some of those "shortcuts" include some dirt roads, do you? Or happen to spend some Saturday mornings wandering around the mountains? A few years ago they were doing bridge work on I-5 around Gorman and it often had traffic backed up. It was great fun to take a couple of dirt roads and cut through Hungry Valley OHV area on the way home. And I had a good reason to do it - it was faster than spending an hour or more crawling through the backup.
Do you happen to know if the dirt road that goes from (more or less) Palm Springs up to Big Bear is open? I've never taken it - only seen it on the map, but I've always wondered what it was like.
I just finished "window-shopping" the Wrangler she's interested in on the Jeep website, and the employee discount price does indeed look good (good enough that I doubt she'll try to negotiate it down further). I will double-check the Edmunds TMV and compare it to the Jeep employee discount, though. She hadn't really considered the LWB until I mentioned it today, so she may come over tomorrow and give mine a good look-over (without the pressure of looking at one at a dealership), but I think a SWB will suit her needs well. My question is, how long will a rag top last if you leave it on year round and it goes through normal wear of somewhat mild winters and nice summers. I live in North Carolina so we don't have extreme weather really either way in either season. the reason i was wondering is because if i do end up and get this wrangler, i would like to know how soon i should invest in a hard top. but if a rag top will last a few years than most likely i will stick to that for a while...
Now I'm looking forward to finding the 4 x 4 roads in my neck of the world.
If you like trail/tavel guides, there are a couple of books about the Sierras. You might want to pick up "High Sierra SUV Trails Vol. 1" which covers the east side. I also like Tony Huegel's books, though they are a little older (don't know if they've been updated recently or not). He's written several on various parts of California. One of the SoCal books I've used is "Backcountry Adventures Southern California" - not only does it have good write-ups on the trails, it also gives lat/lon coordinates so you can download waypoints to a GPS ahead of time (this seems to be the current new trend for trail books). It is amazing how many trails and beautiful places there are within SoCal.
I've used the SoCal Auto Club county maps for navigating - they have many dirt roads on them with accurate mileage indicated. Until I got my GPS I used them often as my only source of information (hey, there's a dirt road indicated there that parallels Hwy 58 and will avoid the mess at Four Corners! Let's try it...). Another good source of information are the National Forest maps (Las Padres has a free map that specifically identifies the 4x4 and dirt bike trails). BLM also has excellent maps if you are wandering around the desert.
And there's always driving on the beach near Pismo - I think it's about the only place left in California where you can drive on the sand.

Here are some pictures of my Unlimited first real off road trip to Pittsfield IL courtesy of fellow member jeff62301 who invited me to join there group TRJC. She now is a month old and has 3100 miles on her. I got her real dirtied up and had a blast doing it. All in all she performed great, I see some mod's in her future, found myself a little low for some areas.Tom, I getting my feet wet before we head to Turkey Bay.

By the way, it cost us $800 to get the exhaust manifold changed on the Sport several years ago, and I considered myself lucky - the dealerships were all asking over $1000 for it. There's a TSB out on the manifold bolts - I found that out when I went looking for something on it.
I have definitely found out that our good gas mileage is due to our all highway, big elevation change commute. This past week I was in Vegas did enough driving there to have a tank of gas that was more than half city driving (first time ever). I got 13 plus mpg. Am I ever glad our commute is almost all highway!

I didn't air down my first time out with my new tires (33's) , later found out that Sam's put 40 lbs in them when they were installed. I'm a believer in airing down now, Nicole climbed hills alot better this time

I love it that the whole family was with ya. Did they all enjoy it? This Jeep thing is ideal for families, and it promotes family togetherness.

Btw, I don't think anyone actually makes black head light bezels, though I don't know why. I would buy some in a second. What most do is take them off, scuff them up with some sand paper and paint them with Krylon black.
This weekend I gave my 12 y.o. boy a couse in soft top removal. He did one side all by himself. I think he's thinking when he turns 16 he might be driving it! But I keep telling him, no way. I don't believe Jeeps or any true SUVs are safe for young drivers. So, then he asks about our old 300z sitting in the garage. Nope, won't be driving that either! I told him we'll get him a nice 4 cylinder Honda Accord in any color he likes. :P

Has anyone ever successfully gotten DC to cover the exhaust manifold? I just got off the phone with them and they gave me the cold shoulder. Told me there's not even a TSB about it. Cracked manifold? On the Jeep 4.0L? Never heard of that before. Are you sure? Well, denied anyway, your mileage is too high.
I'm gonna call and bug them again. I reckon they want my next car to be a Honda.
DC have certainly replaced them under warranty, mine was done at around 30K, and as there's nothing unusual about the repair there's no need for a TSB.
I hardly think the failure of an exhaust manifold after all this time warrants the purchase of a Honda. :confuse:
...just want to make sure I have enough people.. so far I've got 2 helping me. Last thing I want to happen is to find out it's too heavy and we drop it.. :surprise:

I was in a bad mood with that earlier post, had just gotten off the phone with them. I wouldn't expect a cracked manifold to be replaced on a 7 year old Jeep if it were a unique circumstance. But it's not. It's every single Jeep with the 4.0L engine made before 2000, be it Wrangler, Cherokee or GC. Everybody gets it eventually. That is very, very lame and I do feel DC should have done something about it, much like Ford did with the 3.7L V6 head gasket meltdown, which both I and an ec girlfriend suffered. Instead they blow everybody off and deny it's a problem.
I am PO'd enough I doubt I would buy another DC product anytime soon.
