interseting..... I like the idea of something similar to the XJ. they never should've ended that line. The compass.....they've been tossing that idea around for years. I'm really surprised they didn't jump into that SUV / sports car / Rally racer hybrid thing years ago.
I am not sure I would do anything with it until you notice a problem. You can take it to a another place for a second opinion, but I would ask them questions first. I think every place will want to pull the tranny and break it apart. They won't do this it put it back on for free just to give you estimate. I would most likely drive it until there is a problem. I would also do my best to save up for this or any other problem you might have in the future.
Yesterday was sort-of a milestone, I guess. My '04 Unlimited went over 50,000 miles, and I'm starting to think about the 60,000 mile servicing. I'm not sure which is going to come first - the GiGi's first anniversary the middle of next month or 60,000 miles. The interesting thing is that we only put 35,000 miles on the Tacoma the first year we had it!
Thanks for sharing the pics. I am glad you had a great time. I think everyone should try to make it out to a Jamboree once. I guess it may not be for everyone and it may depend on which jamboree you go to. I take my father on the same one for four straight years now. We both love going.
Does anyone know if I need to lift my Unlimited to fit 32's? I have 31's on now and it sure seems that I have the room for 32's without the lift. Any insight would be appreciated.
It depends if you ever want to use the full range of axle articulation that your Wrangler has available. If you only drive on smooth tarmac you can actually fit 33s as long as you adjust the steering stops to prevent rubbing on full steering lock.
On the other hand I have an almost 3" lift OME suspension, which is designed for 31" tires, and anything larger than my 31s would rub on one thing or another at full stretch.
Can anyone provide any info on D-C/Jeep leasing compared to others; are their money factors competitive? Residuals reasonable? Do they offer discounts for buy-out at the lease end? D-C isn't very open about these things. Info will be appreciated.
Hello. Just found this forum. Nice to find other Jeep enthusiasts!
Anyway, my wife and I both had Wranglers in the past (her's was a stock 87, mine a heavily modified 90). She got rid of her's being practical... I got screwed by emissions laws when I moved to Houston - my 4 barrel Webber didn't pass We're picking up a new 05 Unlimitted Rubicon today. Very nice Jeep and a very reasonable price (25K). I do have a concern though. Has anyone pounded (mudding, rock-climbing, etc) on their Jeep and not had the A/C go out shortly afterward? Neither of our older Wranglers had A/C. It would seem to me that leaking A/C hoses might be the weak link. Any thoughts?
up into the upper reaches of your engine, you should be fine. I've done some wheeling in Cali and here in the midwest (See Tom's TB site), and my a/c still works fine. But with doors and windows off here in sticky Alabama, I am still not using it.
Well, I got my winch last night and within an hour if it hitting the garage, it was installed! I ate first of course, but the install only took about 20 minutes, including a brief rain shower getting in the way.
Installation was a snap, and everything works just fine! I would just like to find a way to keep anybody from being able to unspool the line. I hope that won't be a problem, but something I think about.
Here's a pic...
In case you can't tell, it is a Warn 9.5ti. I got it from a great online resource and got a smoking deal. It was new, in box, and had free shipping. Hosts: Can I post the URL to where I got it (if anybody is interested)?
We're pretty close to buying an 05 Unlimited if the dealer can find an automatic in the right color. We want a dual top pkg, but they're getting scarce. I'm curious about the possibility of getting the dealer to install the second top at the pkg price. In other words, what's Mopar mark-up on dealer-installed accessories. The dual top pkg MSRP is $1465; bought separately they would be $795 for the factory hardtop plus about $1300 for a soft-top kit plus installation.
I'm not sure your numbers are correct. The $1465 is the MSRP for "dual tops", which means it is the premium over the standard soft top, not the price for both tops. Assuming you can locate a soft top Jeep that fits your requirements, you would want the dealer to provide the hardtop for $1465 (perhaps with some discount assumption) as an add-on. The hardtop is not $795. FYI, when I recently bought my Unlimited (dual tops) I really wanted black tops and the dealer offered to paint the hardtop. I opted not to have him do it, but the point is your dealer may also show some flexibility.
I need to clarify. The Jeep Build website lists the hardtop as "included" when the dual top option ($1435) including both tops is checked. I also saw it listed that way last night at the dealership on a car with the dual top option The $795 figure is the MSRP for the HT only option (no soft top at all). So if we can find our model with the HT only option, we'd be looking at about $1300 extra for a factory soft top assembly in a box. If we find one with a soft top, we'd be looking at $1500+ additional for a factory hard top in a box. Summary: Factory Soft Top = std; no chg. Factory Hard Top only = add $795 to base Dual Top Option = Both tops = add $1435 to base Factory HT only + ST later = add $795 to base + 1300 (?) later Factory ST + HT later = $1500 (?) later
Wait a minute...now the dual top pkg doesn't look so important! Except the car wouldn't have the factory electricals for the wiper/defroster. Bottom line question is how much is dealer cost on a complete Mopar soft top package?
I'm looking into buying a used Jeep Wrangler. ('93 to '99) I know that Wranglers can run for a long time, but I was wondering how many miles is too many? And what (if any)"typical" problems I should look for in a higher milage Jeep? Such as major engine work, transmision, etc... Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hello all, I have been reading all of your posts since becoming interested in Wranglers this spring. I bought an 05 White Unlimited Rubicon one month ago. No regrets. Question #1 (Excuse me in advance if this is a redundant question) Is my rubicon a TJ??What is it characterized as?? I know Tidester touched on this in CJ/YJ/TJ ????? - READ ONLY forum. Just wanted to clarify. Question #2 I just saw a preview for the Dukes of Hazard Movie. Are other White Rubicon owners worried that their buddies are going to call you Daisy?? :P
I'm no mechanic, but I do have a '98 Sport with 130,000 miles on it that is running quite well, for as little as its getting used now (somehow the soft top Unlimited gets most of the miles now). How many miles is "too many" depends quite a bit on the previous owner and how they took care of it. I'm hoping that the Unlimited won't have problems with 200,000 miles or more, since it has over 50,000 miles and it isn't quite 11 months old. By the way, the '98 is a manual and still has the original clutch in it.
If you can, I would recommend looking at '97 - '99 because that gets you the TJ model and the coil suspension (much improved over the YJs). Check the exhaust manifold - if the previous owner hasn't changed it yet, you'll most likely have to do it, and it can be an expensive repair.
I haven't had a problem with my A/C and haven't heard of anyone having a problem from taking their Jeep off-road. Which dealership are you buying your Jeep from? I am just curious, I live in Houston.
Like mtngal said, I would look for a '97 and up wrangler. I would also lien to a 6cyc but it depends on how you will use the Jeep. I would try to find a good mechanic to check the vehicle out. I believe it usually cost around $70 and it would be worth it for as much money as you spend on a used vehicle.
Rubicons are still considered TJs. But if you have an unlimited they are considered LJs. I always give my buddy with a white Jeep the "Daisy" treatment.
HELP . my wrangler looses power going up hills (large and small) it coughs and chokes but never stalls. its fine for a month and then acts up. i got to many opinions from mechanics but finally decided to go with the clogged cat converter theory. replaced entire exhaust sys from the cat back. was told by mechanic that the ex manifold gasket was blown and should replace that also (have not done that yet) anyway next day same problem.i am really broke and cant just start replacing everything, and yes the next option is the fuel pump (is that same as the sending unit?) thing is it follows no logical pattern except going up a grade. it doesnt seem to matter how much fuel is in the tank. any advice or opinions? ps it has 110,000 miles on it other than this problem its fine. help john91
Now THAT'S an American flag! I sure wish I either lived closer to PA or that they'd have a Camp Jeep out here in California. - I would have loved to have gone again.
we were out on trails this weekend and got caught in a downpour, we stopped long enough to put our tops up and decide we'd better get off the trail quick. I got about 3/4 up a steep hill, lost all forward momentum, put on the brakes, and she slid all the way back to the bottom, I made it the second time, a little running start and a lot more gas the whole way.
sliding wasn't fun, but making it up the second time sure was.
Like mtngal said, TJ's have the coil springs instead of leaf springs. Many consider that a plus; some dont. I have a 97 and issues to look for would include:
Exhaust manifold Catalytic converter Leaking pinion seals Radiator WILL leak at some point if not replaced
Radiator swaps are easy to DIY. I'm not a mechanic and I did it in two hours in the middle of winter.
As for the losing power in the 97 4cyl, exhaust manifold WILL play a part in that power loss. If it only dies while going up hill, your fuel pump may be weak or you may have a clog in the fuel line somewhere. Treat your Jeep to some Chevron with techron and other cleaners for a few fill ups. That may clean the fuel system a bit. You can also try some of the fuel injector cleaner as well. If those don't help at all, it sounds to me like the fuel pump may be going out and not strong enough to get the fuel against the uphill ascent.
Mac may have better ideas though.
My bumper is a Jeeperman (with light bar) and integrated winch plate. Yes, it already had the holes drilled for a standard winch (other than a Warn 8274). Winch took 20 minutes to install.
That's a good lookin' Jeep! I'm new to the forum. I've had my black '04 Sahara for about 2 months now the only thing I've done to it so far is put on 31" BFG A/T's. I'm always trying to decide what to do next. I noticed your side rocker bars in the photo. Which ones do you have? Do you have any photos with a side view you can post?
Also, does anyone know which, if any, aftermarket bumpers will work with a frame mounted 2" receiver hitch already installed?
My rocker guards are made by Toys by Troy (www.toysbytroy.com) and got them from 4x4groupbuy.com. They are a fairly common design that are also done by Shrockworks, AtoZ Fabriciation and a few others. Troy's shop is really well known out west (based in Phoenix), but not as well known out east (I lived in CA when I got em).
I do have a few closeups, but they are prior to the lift (rockers were not affected by the lift at all). Hope these help.
keats & others, I am installing my Roady 2 XM receiver in my LJ and I read all of the previous posts on the topic. There are several references to a "PIE adaptor", but no indication of whether this is a DCJ or aftermarket product. Can someone point me in the right direction? I have the unit mounted and will attempt to post photos once I complete the permanent wiring. Thanks!
So far we're quite happy with our Jeep. Now its time for some mods...
I'm going to be adding a rear bumper/tire carrier/G-can holder, nerf bars/sliders, and a front bumper w/receiver for my winch. I may just fabricate my own front bumper. I've done that before because the front receivers I've seen were too flimsy for a winch. But if there is a good one out there, I'd like to save the effort
Can anyone comment on Body Armor parts? They appear to be well made on the net but would love to hear from an actual owner.
Can anyone recommend any other brands that they currently own? It appears that most of the manufacturers I used for my '90 are gone
They are pretty beefy, to say the least. I think a lighter design, even a Hanson bumper, would work just as well, and weigh a LOT less.
You can get rock bumpers like Toys by Troy, Jeeperman, Warn, and others, that are pretty stout, can handle the extras, and look great.
Jeeperman has extras that will allow the carrying of jerry cans and the stuff you want as well. Their system is more modular, and lets you add what you want.
My Jeeperman has an integrated one also, but the depth behind it is limited by the Wrangler frame, so it may not work too well with hitches. I didn't plan on using it often, except for an occasional trailer. I already have a hitch that works in it.
And yes, it does have hoops for the chains as well (behind and underneath).
I like the looks and they are the least expensive wheel that I've seen.
I've read that alot of people use 8" rims with 12.5" tires, but interco's website has a 10" rim listed as preferred for 12.5" tires. What are the advantages / disadvantages? I've heard that the narrower rim will hold the bead better when aired down, any thing else that I should consider?
And of course the narrower ones are less expensive, I've made choices based on cost way too many times and paid for it later. Any advice on wheel size or brand is welcome. Are most of the name brand black steel wheels as good as the next?
jeff
ps,, the rims that the tires are on now are not the right bolt pattern.
How does the pin on the drawbar work with that? It looks like it would have to come up through the bottom? What brand of drawbar do you have that works with it? I actually like what I see from Jeeperman. The swing-away tire carrier looks excellent.
The PIE Adaptor is an aftermarket accessory. You will need the pie adaptor and also an adaptor that has RCA jacks (red and white) on one end and a plug for your XM unit on the other. The PIE adaptor plugs into the factory CD changer control on the back of the OEM head unit. It makes the facory CD player think that your XM is a CD changer. This gives you as close to digital quality sound as possible with this type of setup. It's a very simple install. I mounted the PIE adaptor with double-sided tape to the firewall behind the glove box. Here's a llink to where I purchased everything for mine:
Click on Precision Interface Electronics, then on Input for Factory OEM radios, CHRY02-Aux is the one you need for your LJ. Any more questions, let me know.
One more advantage, this set up also works for my Ipod.
X2 on what Paul said, The Jeeperman rear bumper system is widely regarded as one of the best out there. Check out Jeeperman
You mention nerf bars as well. I have the Jeeperman Trail Skidz and they are awesome. You may want to consider them. My next purchase for the Jeep will be the Jeeperman front bumper.

Begs the question why'd he risk the punishment for a 10 year old Saturn.

I was thinking about buying a Wrangler but I am concerned about long term quality. Although DCC seems to be fixing the problem, will the engine last.
