Will it do as well as an F-150 4x4 in the snow? Up to a certain point, then the extra ground clearance of the taller truck will win out...

I think the Escape will hold its own. BMW's 3.0L I6 is quite a performer, though. If it's offered with a 5-speed tranny, then it's quite a package. I would definitely want THAT.
Cargo space for two mountain bikes (front wheels removed) will be my requirement. If it an do that, heck, I better start saving now!
The limited info for the 2002 Escape does not identify any changes from the 2001 except trim. Have there been any minor/subtle changes to improve things like noise, seat comfort, convenience?
If you are fair, you should as well remove his equally annoying post.
I read most of the SUV forums just to see how everybody is doing with their vehicles. For some reason this is one of the more unfriendly forums, why I don't know. There doesn't seem to be much room here for a difference of opinion re: the Escape.
I also found out that the some of the underbody parts have been strengthened to improve the crash results for 2002. Specifically I believe the rocker panels that the running boards bolt into have been "beefed" up. Nice piece of mind that the 2002 should be safer in the front offset crash.
The radio is great, the acceleration is suprising, the seats are comfortable too. The only negative is the shifter is in the way with the radio.
I can really see why the analysts rate vehicle this tops in its class.
just push the DSP button (6-disc in dash) and when it reads DSP OFF just push the select button up or down for which you want, also I like the Driver Seat setting for when I have all the windows open..you can here it better
Odie
They appear to be different with non-fixed headrests.

the escape/tribute stalling problem is WELL documented by the owners of these vehicles. I believe a recall should happen, but I dont think FORD can figure out the problem. this has to be frustrating.
I think a lot of you realize that the vehicle you purchased is like a time bomb, waiting for problems to come like Murphy27 is experiancing and as a result are very defensive.
Murphy27- I really feel very bad for you and the others who are having the 'stalling' problem and have no confidence in a brand new vehicle. I agree that recall # 6 will be coming up soon.
Yes, there have been many posts about this very dangerous problem. Unfortunately, the lemon law process does take some time. Is there any way you could borrow a family/friends vehicle? I wish you good luck in getting satisfaction.
He works at Ford dealer , said he fixed many Escapes that way.
"I think a lot of you realize that the vehicle you purchased is like a time bomb, waiting for problems to come like Murphy27 is experiancing and as a result are very defensive."
This post, using terms like "time bomb" and "defensive", especially coming from a non-owner of the vehicle (in fact, from a recent buyer of a similar, cross-shopped vehicle), comes across as a 'bash', whether intended or not. It has the air of "See? I told you so!" To me, it is no wonder that people may take offense at such posts.
ejp
There was no "See, I told you so" message either. ( I never once mentioned my vehicle, or if I was happy with it or not, did I)? That was how you inferred the message, something I have no control over. Please stop 'reading' into messages. If I have something to say, I do, and it's meaning is usually very clear. (Unless of course, like you, you waste time attempting to figure out any hidden meaning).
Trust me. No hidden meaning. As a society in whole we are way too sensitive. Your post is evidence of that. (That was an 'opinion' by the way.)
There was nothing uncivil or unfriendly about my post but it appears that's how you took it. Amazing to me.....
I do have a lot of sympathy for people like murphy27. It's just not right to go through that. Have you no feelings????? You seem to fit right in here with some of the other 'grumpy' posters even though you don't seem to own an Escape. Don't take so much to heart, afterall these are only vehicles we are talking about.
I must confess to getting upset when reading about experiances such as murphy's. I've been through that already. It's not nice. Have a heart already.... :-)

however remember when GM killed or maimed hundreds
if not more with gas tank placements on one of their
pickup trucks. I am sure if I wanted to spend the whole of
my spare time researching I could find many injuries or
deaths that some would consider some manufacturers
fault.
I have owned Fords and General Motors and Chrysler
products and have had good and bad with all of them.
Back in some of the bad cases there was no Lemon
Law(or forums such as this) and I was pretty much on my
own dealing with the Dealers and the Manufacturers.
I hope you get your problems resolved satisfactorily and
that you never do buy another Ford. I am somewhat
surprised you did not mention a word about Firestone so I
am assuming you are placing the whole tire problem
blame with the Explorer on Ford Motor Company. My
opinion differs on this being all the Ford Motor
Company's problem, but I can make a case for all 3 of
the Major Manufacturers both good and bad. I will
continue to buy what I feel is the best value for my money
with all things taken into consideration including mine and
my passengers safety.
We are still anxiously awaiting delivery of our 2002 XLT
Escape and being the eternal Optimist that I am I forsee
having no problems of any consequence when we take
delivery of this SUV.

Odie, thanks for the info on the Stadium setting. I haven't tried the settings yet but I'll get to that now.
I just noticed some hooks or loops at the top of the back of the vehicle, by the liftgate, on the roof inside the vehicle. Haven't had time to see what they are for; does anyone know?
At the same time I was wondering like you, what are those things in the rear cargo area on the roof? Looked it up in the owners manual and wow, answers to both of my problems..
For example, since you do not feel safe driving your Escape, did you ask for Ford to provide a rental or loaner car until they tell you the cause of the problem, and their fix.
However, once you state that 'I'll never buy another Ford again' etc, then you can expect that your relationship with the local service department and FoMoCo to go downhill..
Now, you claim that Ford has killed and ecomically damaged many people. Surely you came to this conclusion based on more than just the problem with your Escape. (which would make one wonder why you bought a Ford product in the first place). I agree that you should purchase a vehicle from a company which you are comfortable with.
I however have a different opinion of vehicles in general and Ford Motor Company specifically.
First, all vehicles are dangerous to their occupants. All of the major manufactures go to great efforts to constantly improve the safety and reliability of thier vehicles, and they generally improve each year.
I've had great experiences with almost all of the Ford vehicles (7) I've personally owned. I had one vehicle (Windstar), that experienced a problem when it developed an oil leak that the service people could not troubleshoot quickly. When I expressed my dis-satisfaction to Ford, I asked for them (via FoMoCo customer service) to extend the warranty on the vehicle at their cost. FoMoCo's regional rep approved this request quickly..
It all depends on how you want to get resolution.. Carrot or the stick.. I double my chances of getting the resolution I want to problems by first using the carrot, then the stick if that doesn't work.. However, once you break out the stick, there's no going back..
Well, I do. The reason is because with the back windows cracked, and sometimes the sunroof in the vent position or slightly open position, I can still have fresh air circulating about the cabin, and not get my hair messed up!
Men, consider this when driving with your wives, if both of you are in the front seats. You may get a brownie point for the day for being considerate of the hair!
The 2 guys at the dealership were raving over my Escape. They said they just can't keep them in stock, and the 3 that are in the area (there are 3 dealerships in a 10-mile radius here) are all yellow manuals that nobody wants. They said that since mine has leather, side airbags, and is a decent color (Dark Highland Green), I made a good choice. They said they were particularly impressed with the Escape's acceleration, beefy good looks, and roomy interior space.
They also commented that the leather/sunroof combination is hard to get at all these days since they are running into shortages on these parts at build time. I was surprised to hear this, as I haven't heard any rumblings about this yet. Or were they just telling tall stories?
hckynut
I only wish I could find a set of back mats that went all the way across the hump part. That's still carpeted, and a magnet for dog hair.
Also, I wish they would have put leather on the part of the back seat where the back of your calf would hit. Another magnet for dog hair.
a. singlecd + casette+ am/fm etc.
b. 6cd changer + am/fm
I bet there are lots of folks that would trade you even up for your 6cd changer for their single cd+cassette..
After lurking for weeks reading all we could on the SUV subject we finally decided to dealer price the 2002 Escape XLS (We had already decided to buy one). On to the first dealer .....
The local salesman we drew did not even know the 2002's had gone into production. After informing him yes, they are, and telling him what we wanted (U02 XLS Choice Utility 4D 4WD with only the Convenience Group as an option) he started with MSRP of $22235 but finally agreed to 3% above invoice or $622 off list. Sounded OK to us so we ordered. Nothing like spur of the moment.
Now for a question.. the dealer invoice agreed with Edmunds invoice price but had an additional charge of $18.00 for 10 gallons of gas and a charge of $160 for FDAF. I am guessing but does FDAF stand for Ford Dealers Advertising Fund and this, like freight, are normally unseen charges in the final sale price?
We live near the resort city of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and have access to the state park beaches. In the threads I have read nobody has mentioned running on sand, so comments are appreciated.
Only 8 weeks or so to go ..................
