The Escape should be able to handle more than 4" of snow.. It will do better than the average passenger car and minivan in the snow mostly because of the ground clearance.. Thats usually whats gets folks stuck in the deeper snows..
Will it do as well as an F-150 4x4 in the snow? Up to a certain point, then the extra ground clearance of the taller truck will win out...
Keep in mind that the driver has as much to do with driving in snow as the vehicle. When I was in high school and had (of all things) a Mercury Lynx I drove through snow every winter without getting stuck. Meanwhile people in larger "more snow worthy vehicles" weren't as lucky. Not saying I am the best driver in the world, but the combination is what keeps you going and on the road.
Why don't you tell me what you really think of the Escape and the Ford Motor Company? Don't hold anything back now, but for my benefit, since it doesn't sound like you own and Escape, post this on a Forum where someone cares what your OPINION of the Ford Motor Company and Escape in particular might be.
Yep. BMW will be introducing a new mini-SUV based on their 3 series. The X5 was apparently based on their 5 series.
I think the Escape will hold its own. BMW's 3.0L I6 is quite a performer, though. If it's offered with a 5-speed tranny, then it's quite a package. I would definitely want THAT.
Cargo space for two mountain bikes (front wheels removed) will be my requirement. If it an do that, heck, I better start saving now!
cygnusx1 owns an Xterra and winbro owns a Jeep Liberty - as you typically see, they are sure their vehicle choice is the right one, and they seem to enjoy going into other vehicle topic areas to let everyone know that THEIR choice is better than YOUR choice.
I ordered my 2002 Escape on June 6th, had a VIN assigned within 10 days. I knew the 2002's wouldn't start being produced until July 30th but wanted to be at the start of the list. On Aug 3rd was told that vehicle was produced with an ETA of Aug 20th. In later calls to the VOPC the ETA date was no longer mentioned. Shipping must have been delayed because a week later dealer was given a new ETA of Aug 26th. As of Aug 15th my vehicle was shipped by train. Aug 26th sounds about right now for me to receive.
The 2002 towing spec listed on Edmunds is only 2000 lbs, as compared to the 2001 spec of 3500 lbs. Is this correct? Has there been problems with towing using the 2001 Escape?
The limited info for the 2002 Escape does not identify any changes from the 2001 except trim. Have there been any minor/subtle changes to improve things like noise, seat comfort, convenience?
Quite the opposite, ver2us1! Owners of other vehicles made the *mistake* of not purchasing the Escape. They realize that they had foiled their big purchase opportunity. Then they become insecure and need the reassurance of seeing Escape problems posted by their owners. And they feel better after bad-mouthing the vehicle that they wish they had. Poor souls.
Why must you delete my reply to cygnusx1 using the word "idiot?" It's a proper English word and was used quite appropriately and accurately. You haven't seen profanity yet.
If you are fair, you should as well remove his equally annoying post.
...they sure are a touchy group here, right? For the record I purchased a new Toyota Highlander and I certainly don't 'wish' I had an Escape.
I read most of the SUV forums just to see how everybody is doing with their vehicles. For some reason this is one of the more unfriendly forums, why I don't know. There doesn't seem to be much room here for a difference of opinion re: the Escape.
I see references here and on the Ford website to A plan and X plan and Z plan. I understand A plan is for current full-time Ford employees...but what are X and Z plans all about? Also, if a dealer offers me an X plan discount--and I see many posters here say they buy under X plan--is there anything at all improper about taking advantage of that discount offer (improper on the part of the dealer OR me) if I am not now and never have been a Ford employee? I want to steer clear of anything that has even the appearance of being improper.
X-plan is supposedly for suppliers/contractors/strategic partners to Ford. I too wondered if it was ethical to join EAA simply to use the vehicle discount. Back in Jan/Feb of this year when I was researching X-plan, the vehicle discount page was buried deep in their website. Nowadays, there's a link to that information right on EAA's home page. Seems like they're more than happy to take your money even if that's the only reason you join.
FYI for all of those interested in the 2002 silver escapes the dealer down the street from me just got one in yesterday. I promptly turned in to give it a look. No keypads for entry as some posts have suggested. Perhaps it was just this vehicle but there seems to be some improvement in the fit of the cladding for 2002. It was on there rock solid. It seemed loose on some 2001 models that I poked and prodded. It does look really good...so good me and my check book will be walking in today.
I also found out that the some of the underbody parts have been strengthened to improve the crash results for 2002. Specifically I believe the rocker panels that the running boards bolt into have been "beefed" up. Nice piece of mind that the 2002 should be safer in the front offset crash.
It has been two weeks with the new loaded XLT. This vehicle is fun to drive, excellent in build quality, and at steal at 23K (x-Plan). Hat's off to the Ford/Mazda team for this one.
The radio is great, the acceleration is suprising, the seats are comfortable too. The only negative is the shifter is in the way with the radio.
I can really see why the analysts rate vehicle this tops in its class.
Had my Aerosmith Little South of Sanity cd's in the radio and switched the sound to Stadium with going to All Seats.... sounds like your really at the concert. I've tried some of my others set at Hall and Church..but the Stadium setting is kewl.
just push the DSP button (6-disc in dash) and when it reads DSP OFF just push the select button up or down for which you want, also I like the Driver Seat setting for when I have all the windows open..you can here it better
I don't think it's touchiness, anthony921. This is hopefully an OPEN discussion. When indiscriminating members stop by to offer opinions that are either ill-informed or simply incorrect and rather condescending, it only serves them right to be corrected. If it's not corrected in reply to that specific person, then nobody knows who we're talking about, right? Presumably we're all mature enough to stand by our own words. I would like to hear all opinions. No censorship is needed. Otherwise I'm sure this townhall will have fewer visitors.
I have 2200 miles on my Ford Escape XLT - the engine dies without any reason; Ford cannot find the problem. I am faced with waiting for action under the Lemon Law in my state or selling the Escape (it was purchased in April 2001). I am, by this post, warning all of you that I am not the only person having these problems. Trust me, the Escape is a, imho, dangerous SUV and will be recalled in time for this problem. If you are thinking about buying one, confront your dealer with this stalling problem. Read the Escape problems board. You will be shocked at the Escape problems.
where decent folks can read about problem cars & stay away from them.
the escape/tribute stalling problem is WELL documented by the owners of these vehicles. I believe a recall should happen, but I dont think FORD can figure out the problem. this has to be frustrating.
Sorry, I disagree with you and stand by my original post. When someone tells another person to post their opinion somewhere else, because they disagree with it, or another trys to belittle their opinion, that doesn't sound like an open, friendly forum to me.
I think a lot of you realize that the vehicle you purchased is like a time bomb, waiting for problems to come like Murphy27 is experiancing and as a result are very defensive.
Murphy27- I really feel very bad for you and the others who are having the 'stalling' problem and have no confidence in a brand new vehicle. I agree that recall # 6 will be coming up soon.
Yes, there have been many posts about this very dangerous problem. Unfortunately, the lemon law process does take some time. Is there any way you could borrow a family/friends vehicle? I wish you good luck in getting satisfaction.
There is a recent post at Yahoo Escape club site by Escapetek. The solution is replacing a PCM relay in the fuse box under hood. Try tap on it with back end of screw driver, if engine stalls, you found the cause of stalling.
He works at Ford dealer , said he fixed many Escapes that way.
re Post #1073: "I think a lot of you realize that the vehicle you purchased is like a time bomb, waiting for problems to come like Murphy27 is experiancing and as a result are very defensive."
This post, using terms like "time bomb" and "defensive", especially coming from a non-owner of the vehicle (in fact, from a recent buyer of a similar, cross-shopped vehicle), comes across as a 'bash', whether intended or not. It has the air of "See? I told you so!" To me, it is no wonder that people may take offense at such posts.
It's called an 'opinion'......one doesn't have to own the vehicle to have an opinion about it or about some of the posts here. My comments were not meant as a 'bash' even though that's how you took it. You don't have to like it or even agree with it. That's the nice part about this forum. Free expression of ideas, agree with them or not.
There was no "See, I told you so" message either. ( I never once mentioned my vehicle, or if I was happy with it or not, did I)? That was how you inferred the message, something I have no control over. Please stop 'reading' into messages. If I have something to say, I do, and it's meaning is usually very clear. (Unless of course, like you, you waste time attempting to figure out any hidden meaning).
Trust me. No hidden meaning. As a society in whole we are way too sensitive. Your post is evidence of that. (That was an 'opinion' by the way.)
There was nothing uncivil or unfriendly about my post but it appears that's how you took it. Amazing to me.....
I do have a lot of sympathy for people like murphy27. It's just not right to go through that. Have you no feelings????? You seem to fit right in here with some of the other 'grumpy' posters even though you don't seem to own an Escape. Don't take so much to heart, afterall these are only vehicles we are talking about.
I must confess to getting upset when reading about experiances such as murphy's. I've been through that already. It's not nice. Have a heart already.... :-)
Even though you don't want to agree with me, your replies above show that you do. There's no shame. When you use words with your own intentions and people take it wrong way, there can only be one person to blame.
Thank you for the information regarding the stalling problem. I will take that to my dealer -who now only communicates with me through my lawyer. Bottom line is, these boards have been very helpful to me. Without the input of people who experienced the problems of the Escape, I would not have been able to confront the dealer with any back-up information when my Escape first stalled. Though the service manager said we were a bunch of Internet junkies with nothing else to do, it got their attention when I laid out one after another of the posts re stalling of Escapes. I still am going to trade the Escape as I cannot get on the freeway with it and have no car to borrow. I do want to thank all of you for your input. Remember - never buy another Ford product. Ford has killed hundreds of people and economically damaged hundreds of thousands of people. Ford does not deserve any money from any of us ever again. Make your voice heard though your spending power.
I have no idea what the heck you are talking about. If your intent was to confuse me, you suceeded.....can we get back to talking about cars? Pretty please?
Sorry to hear about your problems with your Escape. I do however remember when GM killed or maimed hundreds if not more with gas tank placements on one of their pickup trucks. I am sure if I wanted to spend the whole of my spare time researching I could find many injuries or deaths that some would consider some manufacturers fault. I have owned Fords and General Motors and Chrysler products and have had good and bad with all of them. Back in some of the bad cases there was no Lemon Law(or forums such as this) and I was pretty much on my own dealing with the Dealers and the Manufacturers.
I hope you get your problems resolved satisfactorily and that you never do buy another Ford. I am somewhat surprised you did not mention a word about Firestone so I am assuming you are placing the whole tire problem blame with the Explorer on Ford Motor Company. My opinion differs on this being all the Ford Motor Company's problem, but I can make a case for all 3 of the Major Manufacturers both good and bad. I will continue to buy what I feel is the best value for my money with all things taken into consideration including mine and my passengers safety.
We are still anxiously awaiting delivery of our 2002 XLT Escape and being the eternal Optimist that I am I forsee having no problems of any consequence when we take delivery of this SUV.
no problems whatsoever! I'm very happy with the Escape (and my mom likes it too). It's very comfortable for long highway drives. The acceleration is great, especially when you have slower folks in front of you you need to get around.
Odie, thanks for the info on the Stadium setting. I haven't tried the settings yet but I'll get to that now.
I just noticed some hooks or loops at the top of the back of the vehicle, by the liftgate, on the roof inside the vehicle. Haven't had time to see what they are for; does anyone know?
The 3 hooks in the headliner in the rear are for the child seat tether.. It's funny, I have a child seat and was looking for the tether anchor but couldn't find one.. There are tie down anchors behind the rear seat in the floor, but they just didn't seem positioned right..
At the same time I was wondering like you, what are those things in the rear cargo area on the roof? Looked it up in the owners manual and wow, answers to both of my problems..
It is unfortunate that your Escape experiences this symptom. I am sure that Ford was doing everything it can to remedy the situation. I'm also confident that prior to your threatening litigation, you could have asked Ford what it would take to make you satisifed with Ford.. (ie, what do you want?). For example, since you do not feel safe driving your Escape, did you ask for Ford to provide a rental or loaner car until they tell you the cause of the problem, and their fix.
However, once you state that 'I'll never buy another Ford again' etc, then you can expect that your relationship with the local service department and FoMoCo to go downhill..
Now, you claim that Ford has killed and ecomically damaged many people. Surely you came to this conclusion based on more than just the problem with your Escape. (which would make one wonder why you bought a Ford product in the first place). I agree that you should purchase a vehicle from a company which you are comfortable with.
I however have a different opinion of vehicles in general and Ford Motor Company specifically. First, all vehicles are dangerous to their occupants. All of the major manufactures go to great efforts to constantly improve the safety and reliability of thier vehicles, and they generally improve each year. I've had great experiences with almost all of the Ford vehicles (7) I've personally owned. I had one vehicle (Windstar), that experienced a problem when it developed an oil leak that the service people could not troubleshoot quickly. When I expressed my dis-satisfaction to Ford, I asked for them (via FoMoCo customer service) to extend the warranty on the vehicle at their cost. FoMoCo's regional rep approved this request quickly..
It all depends on how you want to get resolution.. Carrot or the stick.. I double my chances of getting the resolution I want to problems by first using the carrot, then the stick if that doesn't work.. However, once you break out the stick, there's no going back..
Someone asked on the Liberty board regarding the topic Wind Noise "Who would drive with just the back windows down anyway?". I know this has been a topic on the Escape board too.
Well, I do. The reason is because with the back windows cracked, and sometimes the sunroof in the vent position or slightly open position, I can still have fresh air circulating about the cabin, and not get my hair messed up!
Men, consider this when driving with your wives, if both of you are in the front seats. You may get a brownie point for the day for being considerate of the hair!
Can an Escape be towed behind an RV since its FWD? Normally 4x4's can be towed easily with a tow bar by unlocking the hubs, but since the Escape is FWD does that mean I can't do that without some sort of modification kit?
I don't know if you can flat tow the Escape or not.. However, for sure you could tow it with one of those tow dollys where only the front tires are raised. I bet those are pretty reasonable to rent or buy..
Just got word from my dealer that my 2002 Satin Silver XLT Premium will be built this week. ETA is expected to be around Sept.10. Always makes you a little more anxious when you get the build date and ETA. Can't wait to get a look at this Silver SUV in the real and not a patch in the book.
Just picked up my rubber floor mats from the dealership. Cost wasn't as bad as I expected--they gave me a "new car" discount. They are really nice--very thick and tough with deep grooves and the Escape logo. It isn't so much the dirt and grime I'm worried about, but the dog hair. These will help.
The 2 guys at the dealership were raving over my Escape. They said they just can't keep them in stock, and the 3 that are in the area (there are 3 dealerships in a 10-mile radius here) are all yellow manuals that nobody wants. They said that since mine has leather, side airbags, and is a decent color (Dark Highland Green), I made a good choice. They said they were particularly impressed with the Escape's acceleration, beefy good looks, and roomy interior space.
They also commented that the leather/sunroof combination is hard to get at all these days since they are running into shortages on these parts at build time. I was surprised to hear this, as I haven't heard any rumblings about this yet. Or were they just telling tall stories?
Was wondering if there is any special parts number for the rubber floormats you just picked up? And also do you know if they come in more than 1 color. I always take out the original floormats in my new cars and put in rubber mats. That way when I get ready to sell the car(SUV)I can put in the brand new original floor mats and that always adds a nice touch for selling the vehicle. Thanks for any info. you can give me on the floormats.
Well, I guess there is the standard grey or tan. I got the tan. On my receipt, the parts number says SPOIL8Z781306CAP for the back mats and SPOIL8Z7813086AAP for the front mats. Good idea about the mats--mine in my Escort are shot, as I never changed them out and beat them up pretty bad.
I only wish I could find a set of back mats that went all the way across the hump part. That's still carpeted, and a magnet for dog hair.
Also, I wish they would have put leather on the part of the back seat where the back of your calf would hit. Another magnet for dog hair.
I just noticed today that there is no cassette player in the Escape!!! What is up with that. Since when has a tape player NOT come with a vehicle? I have so much good, irreplaceable stuff on tapes, it is not possible to replace all with CD's. Am I relegated to having an aftermarket cassette player installed?
My 2002 Dark Highland Green 4x2 XLT Choice 2 w/ tan leather arrived at the dealers yesterday and I am hoping to pick it up today. Having splashguards and a spoiler added when they do the prep. Ordered June 6th, built week of July 30th (first week of building 2002's), original ETA Aug 20th, revised to Aug 26th when it had to sit waiting for transport, sent on train Aug 15th, arrived in northern Indiana Aug 21st. Can't wait to see it!!
But that does not make sense. The upgraded system in my Tribute has the 6 cd changer and the tape deck. I thought that Ford and Mazda were using similar systems for there upgrades.
Has anyone purchased an Extended Warranty for an Escape, either Ford's or aftermarket? All of the warranties I have seen run concurrently with the factory warranty. Best Regards...
The 03 HEV http://www.hybridford.com/index.asp sounds good to me, corse the price hasn't been announced but if its about the same, anyone heard the MSRP ? Rob Fruth Houston Tx
I didn't realize that the Tribute had a 6cd changer + cassette in a single unit.. Your right, there must be differences between Ford and Mazda in this area.
There's a hole for something in the dash--could be a tape player? It's right below the air conditioning controls, if my memory serves me right (am not standing next to my vehicle now).
After lurking for weeks reading all we could on the SUV subject we finally decided to dealer price the 2002 Escape XLS (We had already decided to buy one). On to the first dealer .....
The local salesman we drew did not even know the 2002's had gone into production. After informing him yes, they are, and telling him what we wanted (U02 XLS Choice Utility 4D 4WD with only the Convenience Group as an option) he started with MSRP of $22235 but finally agreed to 3% above invoice or $622 off list. Sounded OK to us so we ordered. Nothing like spur of the moment.
Now for a question.. the dealer invoice agreed with Edmunds invoice price but had an additional charge of $18.00 for 10 gallons of gas and a charge of $160 for FDAF. I am guessing but does FDAF stand for Ford Dealers Advertising Fund and this, like freight, are normally unseen charges in the final sale price?
We live near the resort city of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and have access to the state park beaches. In the threads I have read nobody has mentioned running on sand, so comments are appreciated.
