could your neighbor tell they are scored from the outside of the drum??? Get another opinion.... :D
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,766
don't the '05s have disks all around? unless your relative took the wheels off and then the drums(if you have drum brakes), i don't know how they could tell 'the drums were scored'.

4WHL disc only comes on some XLT and Limited models of Escapes for 05.

Hey Rambo! Like your name by the way. I must have seen that movie at least 10 times.

    Anyhooo...

I own both an 01 Escape XLT 4WD V6 and an 04 Mazda ES V6 4WD. Escape is mine, Mazda is the wifes. The Escape drives more truck like, feels more truck like. The Mazda has more of a sporty, tight feel. There is a definite difference between these two vehicles as far as road feel and manners. I guess it depends on your preference as a driver. Have you test driven yet?

No one has answered the question... I also have installed an aftermarket hitch on an 05 Tribute and would love to know the answer...

I have an 03 Escape with approx. 39,000 miles and have been informed by two mechanics that my front pads and rotors already need to replaced. Is this normal?
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
Yes! This is normal in these vehicles. I have been told that with all the weight over the two front wheels the rotors/pads will wear faster. I had mine done just about a month ago for about $275. This included ceramic, low dust pads and new rotors at a dealership! Yes, dealerships can be competitive if you phone around and use coupons. Most Dealerships will accept compeititor dealership coupons. Please, phone around, get quotes. There are also aftermarket rotors and low dust pads available for the Escape/Tribute. The calipers should be good for at least 100,000 is what the dealership told me. Good hunting... :D

My 02 Nissan Altima with about 31K miles needed new pads and rotors as well recently. Living in Northern VA, I deal with a ton of stop and go traffic, so naturally pads and rotors will wear faster. Definitely shop around, I ended up going with Midas since they have a lifetime warrany on their pads and were cheaper than two local dealers. I also went with ceramic pads and have been very happy.

Here's hoping my 05 Tribute will not need new pads for another 25K miles!
  • wilson4wilson4 Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the input on this issue. I have a friend who will replace the pads and rotors for me, I just have to buy the parts. I'm looking into the ceramic pads. I was just totally taken back when they said both pads and rotors, I never had to change rotors on a vehicle at this mileage. Both the dealership and the 2nd mechanic that I took my Escape to, said the same thing about the weight over the two front wheels making the rotors and pads wear faster. The mechanic did mention that he thought Ford used a lighter rotor (to help the front end not to weigh as much) so he suggested me looking into a rotor a little heavier so it wouldn't wear as fast.
  • escapenutescapenut Member Posts: 117
Changed my pads and rotors (both) to after-market about 13K miles ago and haven't looked back. After the first brake-overhaul at dealer's at 26K miles and for $465, I decided that my 2nd brake job would be aftermarket with ceramic-pads and rotors that can be turned and used again, at least a couple of times. My 2nd brake-job was done at ~57K miles with Pro-Stop ceramic-enhanced pads and Pro-Stop rotors. My wheels dust but very little since then, my stopping power is just as good, and they are just as quiet as the OEM pads were. To boot, they were cheaper in price than the OEM parts, both pads and rotors. I will never go back with OEM brake material again. The OEM rotors are effectively disposable and cannot be turned according to the dealer service department. Go for quality aftermarket brake-parts, you won't regret it. Ford or their supplier has missed the mark somewhere, in what I believe is inferior parts-design and implementation for the brakes. Just about every model Ford (including pick-ups) that I notice has the dusting problem pretty bad with OEM pads.

The bottom line is on brake-wear that most everything is totally dependent on how often your foot goes to brake pedal. Urban braking will likely wear brakes more often than mainly highway or a mix.

I'm looking at a 2001 XLT Escape, and I was wondering what you owners have to say about it. I have a '99 Explorer, and I'm looking for something to get a little better gas mileage. That said, what are some "realistic" figures on a V6 Escape around town and on the highway? I do most of my driving around town, and right now my 4.0 V6 Explorer is getting 13.5, and on the highway it gets about 18. It hit 20 one time, but that was it. Stays between 17-18. I love the room my Explorer has, but I'd give up a little space to save a little on gas. I know that the Escapes haven't been all that reliable, but I'd probably compare it to my Explorer. What problems have you all experienced, with the stalling issue being known beforehand? The one I'm looking at has 46k miles, and they are asking $12,9 for it. It sounds reasonable to me, but I'm just wondering if there aren't a few skeletons in there somewhere. Thanks!
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
Although the 01 Escape had its bumps in the road at debut... It actually rates very well for reliability at MSN reiability data under their car section. I own an 01 XLT V6 4wd and have over 50,000 trouble free miles on the vehicle. Granted, I have also been very particular with my maintenance. I have changed oil every 3K, Had radiator, transmission flushed, tires rotated ect.. Been a wonderful vehicle. I average about 20MPG with combined HWY/street driving. ON HWY trips I have averaged as high as 24! MPG doing 70+ . Have a carfax done before buying this vehicle. If it a reputable dealer they will do it for you at no charge. Make sure you get the full report. Some dealers will only pull a partial. Good luck
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
I also (STILL) have my '01 Escape XLT, and I just turned over 65,000 on mine. The '01 did have it's problems for some, while others (including myself) had no problems. I myself am still getting 22 MPG city / 27 MPG hwy (after Turbo installation) and considering the road conditions in Pennsylvania (also known as off-roading in any other state). I have only had to have front pads replaced at 60k because of the people that slam on their brakes because they see a crack in the asphalt and think it's a pothole, or a critter run across the road. My wife is still pushing for me to get rid of the escape and get either a Freestyle, Pilot, or Uplander / Odyssee. I can gladly say I'm holding my ground (for now). :)

    Odie,
Wow, you are getting really good city mpg.. I have an 05 Tribute S and am not getting close to 22 (more like 16-18) in the city. Just to clarify is this a 4cyl or V6 engine?

Hi-Am I ever glad I found this board!
I currantly have an Alero, which I love-just the right size, love how the controls to everything are just in reach, love the trunk room, gas mileage, BUT...this car is awful in the winter. Living in Western NY, we have snow on and off, from late November to April, and at times, it comes down a lot faster than the plows can keep up with it, so the roads are often literally full of ruts from the unplowed snow. The last straw was having to waste a sick day, because I got stuck in the driveway in March! Much as I hate to get rid of it, I don't want to go through another winter with it.
I went to look at a Equinox, since I work for Delphi, and can get a good discount on GM's. I told the salesman why I wanted to look at this vehicle, and he told me, that AWD would give me the same control in the snow as the FWD I currantly have. Then, he tried his hardest to get me into a Trailblazer...loved the Trailblazer, but for one person, its just too big-as is the car payment, I might add. Was this guy seeing a dumb female, who he could make some more money off, by selling a bigger, more expensive vehicle to?
I also stopped in a Ford dealership, and a salesman there, told me, that the AWD was much better in snow than the FWD, and also, the Escape, which I can also get a work related discount on, was about $10,000 cheaper than the Trailblazer I looked at, and $3000 cheaper than the Equinox. I didn't have time to test drive one, but anyway, there's no snow to really see how it handles.
SO....what do you all think? AWD better than FWD or 4WD? Would an AWD Escape be ok at the snow, or should I consider a 4WD Escape?
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
Go for AWD in the Escape. Now don't forget, the Escape is a front wheel drive vehicle most of the time. Until it "feels" the front wheels slip the rear wheels are not engaged. The V6 in the Escape is more powerful than in the Equinox. The Duratec 3.0 is a 24V dual overhead cam engine and has a proven relaibility track record. Go for the Escape or have you tried a Mazda Tribute?
  • escapenutescapenut Member Posts: 117
I'd go with the Escape AWD V6 too. I agree with the previous posts. I've got am '01 Escape FWD XLT V6 (generally don't need AWD in SE Texas) with 70K
pretty trouble-free miles. It's been a good ride so far and I plan on keeping it
for a few more years. By then even a more refined or improved model will be
available. The '05's are a quantum-leap ahead of my '01 in regards to refinement
and interior noise reduction. The V6 has plenty of pep, but the gas-mileage is
middling at best for the Duratec V6 engine. In other Ford/Mazda models the same engine is tuned for better mileage. At present I'm getting about 17mpg City/21mpg Highway.

You should be able to get a good deal too from a straight-shooter Ford dealer w/rebates, discounts, etc.. Try to go with 'Fleet-Sales' if possible as opposed to
regular Sales people. You get a better deal because the fleet-folks are paid salary
instead of commission. You may qualify if you belong to credit union or have a bank that works through preferred dealerships.
  • dw438dw438 Member Posts: 41
I know a dealer near Rochester that can get you an Escape (any type) at invoice!
Victor, NY just off the Thruway. Van Bortel Ford. Purchased a Hybrid there back in November, good trade in, low loan rates thru local banks.
  • dc_driverdc_driver Member Posts: 712
    Karen,

I bought an AWD V6 Mazda Tribute (cousin to the Escape) back in November and had ZERO problems with the snow and ice conditions here in Northern Virginia. You will be very happy with either the AWD Escape or Tribute models.

The Chevy salesman was trying to put you into a Trailblazer because they are not selling.. The Equinox should have no problems handling the snow, but do not buy an Equinox before you have test driven the Escape or the Tribute. You can buy a completely loaded Tribute for thousands less than either the Escape or Equinox and it will have a longer warranty. I was not as impressed with the Equinox as I was with the Escape/Tribute when I test drove them and was alarmed with all of the issues that Equinox owners were having (appears that they just need to work out the kinks with the Equinox since it is a brand new vehicle). Good luck!

I have a Turbo system (with revamped rear axle) on my escape. Plus I don't put my roof rails on UNLESS I need them. Plus I took my regular antenna off for a Stubby (short little rubber replacement you can get at advance auto for $6) and it looks alot better too.

Can you tell me where you got your turbo and who did you use to "revamp" your rear axle? I know a lot of people will work with you on designing a turbo for certain applications but was yours made for the Escape? And is it a new pinion gear for the rear axle ..... did you loose towing ability? Thanx
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
I went to a shop near my home that specilizes in turbo chargers (new and old). The place repalced the rear axle with a larger version because in the increased amount of torque when the rear wheels would engage automaticly with the 4wd system. The entire step-up was $4500 (turbo and axle) all done at same place. Just check the yellow pages near you under automotive / aftermarket modifications. I was actually told about the place that did mine by a co-worker who had a '96 SHO Taurus supercharged by the place. As for towing, I still can tow with the escape, but noticed that the rpms run alittle higher when towing.

    Thanx Odie,

Im just trying to to figure out what Im looking for (Escape or Explorer). I thought if there was something on the market already out for the Escape that would be great. From what Ive found I would be doing just as well to get the Explorer. More room (am 6' 2"), more pull (V-6 5000lbs). Both seem to get very close to the same mileage. I also believe I might come closer to Escape mileage with whats already on the market. Oh.... I live in small town. Nothing here for aftermarket. Although I do appreciate the info you didnt have to give. Thanx. I have found several things online for the Explorer and nothing for the Escape.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
the Freestyle, more room than both escape or exploder with better mileage too. I got a Freestyle as a loaner when my escape was in for it's 65k service. NICE. The only thing I didn't like about the freestyle, is it made my wife start up again about trading the escape for one.

  • campinutcampinut Member Posts: 8
Though I dont like buying new and am not very fond of the Freestyles looks. I want a little more tow so I will probably go with an older Explorer but thanx again.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
the freestyle's front end looks almost identical to the escape IMHO.

I have owned my 01 Escape now for about 6 months, payment free! This weekend I almost went for it and bought an 05 Escape Limited, in a dark silver color. This thing was loaded with all the bells and whisltes. Heck, the Ford dealer was going to give me 13K for my 01 and let me have the 05 Limited for 22.5K... I just couldn't do it. I like my Escape, I know my Escape. Besides, I have to keep telling myself.. Be patient wait for the 06/07 :shades: model...
  • baggs32baggs32 Member Posts: 3,229
Why wait? The 06/07 models won't be any different than the 05's. You can find the 06 Escape ordering guide here. As you'll see when you read it, nothing has changed for 06.

If I know you scape you're waiting for the Duratec35 to appear in the Escape. A white collar Ford employee on the Fusion thread informed us that the next Lincoln Aviator, an 07 model to be released next year IIRC, will be the first to get it and others will follow after. But it will probably go to the vehicles that need it more first, like the Five Hundred and Fusion. You most likely won't see it in the Escape until the next redesign if there is one. I say "if" because Ford already announced it will be introducing the Ford Edge crossover SUV, based on the Euro Focus platform, which may or may not mark the end of the Escape. In addition to the Edge, Ford is also rumored to be working on a Mazda6 based crossover similar to the next Aviator and the newly introduced Mazda CX-7 (see it here). With the Edge (slightly smaller than the Escape), the Mazda6 based crossover (slightly larger than the Escape), and the Explorer I don't see where the Escape is going to fit in.

So don't wait because you want an Escape with the Duratec35 as you may never see one. But if you like the sound of the other two, by all means, wait. ;)
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
The demise of the Escape?? I wish I would have marked the internet site where I read about 6 months ago about a redesign for the Escape in the 06/07 time frame. The 3.5 was a shoe in, along with 4wheel discs standard on all Escapes, roll-over controls, upscale interior, and rear sensing device were a few of the items that I can remember about this article. However, the Fusion is sure looking good

Last night in the parking garage at work (which is park at own risk or park 1/2 mile away) somebody must have either pulled in or backed-up and scrapped the entire driver side of my escape, and DID NOT leave a note or name or anything. This really ruined my chances of getting a decent trade-in value.

I have a 2001 Ford Escape and I am having a lot of trouble with it. It seems like every time I am driving it hesitates.I have been taking it to Ernie Haire Ford since November and they keep syaing nothing is wrong with it. I just paid $400 to get a new cam and crank sensor and it is still happening. I also just had a new computer put in it. I was wondering if anyone else is having probelms like this?
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
What about the fuel system? Every had the fuel filter changed? injectors cleaned? The "stalling" you are having does not sound like a computer issue. Try another dealer also. Its amazing how techs differ from dealership to dealership
  • reid1083reid1083 Member Posts: 8
Yeah, I have had everything done on time. I didn't think it was a computer thing either, I think they changed the computer because the computer was saying nothing was wrong with my car. I was thinking about going to another dealership but I just put $400 into my car at that dealership and the parts I paid for didn't fix the problem so I am going there again for the $400 credit that I have. I am just really curious to find out what is making this happen.
  • brooster54brooster54 Member Posts: 25
I had an '01 3.0l., and had two possibly related problems. One was that the throttle stuck when closed, and applying throttle from a start resulted in a lurch that was sometimes head snapping. Another was unexplained stalling when taking my foot off the gas. I had had it stall on me at up to 30 - 40kph, and when turning left across a highway, it can be a life altering experience! After repeated trips to the dealer, always resulting in "no fault found", I raised a big stink  , resulting in them changing the throttle body, under warranty. Wonder of wonders, the vehicle was completely cured, and I never had another problem with it. Liked the vehicle so much after that I traded it in on an '05! :)
  • reid1083reid1083 Member Posts: 8
That is sort of what is happening to me. A head snap. I went to hit the gap in traffic and my car didn't go like it should have. I was almost hit by 2 different cars. Everytime I take it they say nothing is wrong with it. I am also wanting to upgrade to an 05. I am just trying to fix the problem so I will get a better trade-in. Maybe I will ask them to look at the throttle body! I talked to them earlier today and they said they still weren't finding anything wrong with it.They have had it for 3 days now. One guy even had the nerve to ask me if I was driving it right. I couldn't believe it. Just because I am a girl he assumed I wasn't driving the car right.

I am choosing between two similar 2005 XLT Escapes. One window sticker lists "Safety Canopy Side Air Curtain" and the other says "Safety Package: Canopy and side air." The dealer of the first says they both mean the same thing, although the sticker price for the option on the first is $425 and on the second $595. Can anyone clarify whether there is a difference? The Ford site offers no difference, just shows Safety Canopy system.

    :confuse:
  • baggs32baggs32 Member Posts: 3,229
Here's the difference and I know because we have a JOB1 2005 Escape.

2005 JOB1 Escapes (produced up until August 2004 IIRC) have side curtains only. 2005 JOB2 Escapes (produced from 8/2004 through 5/2005) added seat mounted side torso air bags to the package which complement the side curtains.

So what you are seeing is one Escape, the one with the $425 curtains only, that may have been sitting on the lot for a year or more now, and one that is a bit newer.

Aside from the SAB thing the JOB2 models have more badges on the exterior (most notable is a "V6" badge on the hatch) and were available with a carpeted storage well under the rear cargo area. JOB1 Escape's had their cargo wells filled with a large, bolted on piece of styrofoam. The latter can be removed and the storage thing put in it's place for about $300. It's not worth it though. $100 maybe.

    Hope that helps!

now i'm ticked at my local service dept. I went in for a regular oil change and asked them to check out my Sunroof rocker switch (have had it replaced 2 times now under warrenty). Now they are stating that window switches are not covered under the warrenty. I dropped a voicemail to the service manager (who was off today) and I dropped an e-mail to Ford about this issue. I'm waiting for the part to come in, but in the meantime, i've already pulled the warrenty information off of Ford's website and there is no mention that window switches are NOT COVERED. This will be the Third time my sunroof rocker switch has shorted out. oh by the way I have the 5 yr / 75k Extended Warrenty which would cost me $50 deductable for the work, but with out it would be $175 parts and labor.

I feel you! I am having the same problem, kinda. I have been taking my car in to get fixed since November and they just got it right last week. Anyway, I was told a month ago that they were 100% sure if I got my cam and cranck censor fixed that the problem would go away. So I spent 400 bucks to get it fixed and it didn't work, now they are telling me I don't get my money back even though I only did it b/c they were 100% sure. I love my car but I hate my ford dealership!
  • scape2scape2 Member Posts: 4,123
Ford really needs to come down hard on thier dealerships. They need to set guidllines/rules ect.. for customer service. Dealerships can easily make or break a car deal. Along with giving a car brand a bad reputation. I realize these dealerships are private and not really connected to Ford. I feel there needs to be more of a cooperative effort and tie between the two.

I recently purchased a new 2005 Escape, with a single play CD/Cassette player. When playing CDs I burned on my computer (which is less than one year old), the CD player skips. (My husband has a 2000 Ford Ranger with a single play CD/Cassette player, and he does not have this problem.) The Escape Manual states "CD units are designed to play commercially pressed 4.75 inch audio compact disc only. Due to technical incompatibility, certain recordable and re-recordable copact discs may not function correctly when used in Ford CD players."

What is going on here? I prefer to burn a copy of my original cd to carry around in my car, in order not to scratch my original cd, etc. It never entered my mind when I was purchasing the Escape that a burned cd would not play in the cd player.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, is there any way to resolve this issue? When I talked with my local service manager yesterday, he told me that Ford had advised him that the player would not play burned cd's. At the time, I had not read the above statement from the Manual.

Any suggestions appreciated. This really bums me out....
  • baggs32baggs32 Member Posts: 3,229
Sounds like your problem is with the CDs and not the player. Try burning the copies at a lower speed, usually 8x and below reduces all errors on the disc and makes them compatible with all types of players. I had a similar problem when I used iTunes to make copies and bumping the burn speed down to 4x solved the problem.
