However, with Ford running such a light-weight oil that is damn near the same viscosity as synthetic from the beginning in all of their engines, I would think they're somehow accounting for all of this in their manufacturing process.
I'm no mechanic, and I've read stories where Ford mechanics are saying things like the 5w-20 *must* be used and even some outlandish stuff like you can't change your oil until *after* 5000 miles. But after reading up on the oil itself, it just doesn't look like that big of a deal to use the 5w-30 Mobil 1 instead of the 5w-20 Motorcraft, so that's what I'm going to do.
I don't think I'd run something like 10w-30 dino oil in one, though. That sounds like taking a much bigger chance than the synthetic. Honda runs the 5w-20 weight in their engines, too, and I read somewhere that the engines have such tight tolerances that even 10w-30 is too heavy and will prevent the engine from starting if it begins to get just a *little* cold outside.
Near Thanksgiving 2000, I ordered an Escape XLT 2WD, Automatic, Sun Roof, Privacy Glass, Side Air Bags. $100 over invoice at Pacifico Ford at the Philly automall.
Car arrived around January 25. I took delivery on February 10th. Now have 2200 miles on it.
General opinion: LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!
This is my first SUV, which I never thought I could afford, and I'm loving every damn minute.
Love the MPG. Sorry, folks, but I'm getting 23.7 MPG -- combined -- on this car rated EPA 18/24. A couple tanks actually BEAT the EPA for highway. The mileage seems to be getting a little better as I break it in. I drive very conservative (about 58 MPH on our 55 speed limit highways, no sudden starts, and I coast to stoplights), and about 85% of my miles are highway. If you're not getting similar mileage, then I blame the way you're driving, or maybe you drive more city miles. My advice: Slow down. You'll get there, and you'll get there alive.
I like the height of the driver's position. For a mini-SUV, I really feel like I'm well above everyone else. Not the feeling of driving a firetruck like the Explorer gives, but then, what else does?
I really like the room in the backseat, which has been used only twice when driving, for taking my nephew and a friend skiing (with room for the skis, thanks to the 60/40 bench). But move the front seats forward, and there's tons of room to get comfortable with my girlfriend when parked. Almost as much room as in my apartment. Put the back seat down, and we can lie down somewhat comfortably.
The Escape supplies slightly warm air to the cabin very, very, quickly, after only about 2000 RPM-minutes (example: 2 minutes engine idling at 1000 RPM).
It has a good ride, but I'm not an expert on handling and so on. I DO NOT notice the infamous fuel smell nor extra road noise, unless I make use of the sun roof/moonroof.
Lots of nifty places to put maps, junk, and nick-nacks. The removable, covered, ashtray which fits in a cup holder is ingenious. It's an amazingly simple but handy feature. I put my loose change in the ashtray, and can keep the ashtray in the cupholder or move the ashtray elsewhere if I want to use the extra cupholder.
I do wish the interior wasn't as plastic as it is, but I got used to the plastic dash. But I can't help notice the cheapish looking interior door panel, because the little bit of fabric they stick there actually makes the rest of the plastic portions stand out.
But, it's not perfect:
I have adjusted to the seat, but originally, it was uncomfortable for my body. The bench part (the part you sit your butt on) seemed to be a little short. The Explorer bench seemed to be longer and fuller, and more comfortable.
I really, really, wish the Escape had a nifty compass/temperature console option like the Explorer.
Don't like the shift lever in the way of the radio, but that's not reason not to buy a car. You'll deal with it.
Hate the hidden location of the ignition keyhole. Its a silly thing to worry about, but its bothersome.
I asked Pacifico NOT to put the mileage-reducing crossbars on the roof rack (they came in a separate box). I've never used a roof rack in my life. Sure enough, they put them on. Ugh.
I was very, very, disappointed in the loan service. I applied online at Ford's web site, got 4.9% interest. Got a phone call the next day from the dealer, confirming the 4.9%. I had an online account with Ford, promising the 4.9%. Of course, on the day I ordered it, the dealer had no idea where I got 4.9% from, since the Ford incentives were only 7.9%. They did not honor the 4.9% rate, so I got the loan elsewhere.
That's all off the top of my head. I just feel good IN the car, and feel good ABOUT the car. I thought it was a good deal on a good car.

Hey, as far as child seats go, are you going to get a new infant carrier? Which one are you looking at or suggest I look at? I think I am going to go with the new one by Peg Perego (will work with their 2001 strollers).

I am glad you are loving your Escape as much as I love mine.
My Seats are quite comfortable (leather) but I have short legs and a long torso. Otherwise I tend to agree with your dislikes but, as you pointed out, they are minor and I would buy the SUV all over again!

The Only reason we took the Escape was because it is so new. Normally we take the Chevy Venture. It has alot more room and the kids can put the seats back a little if they want to nap. If you have a dog the Escape is out! Once you put yourself, spouse & kids in the Escape along with all your goodies there will be no room for the dog. On the other hand, the Escape/Tribute just got 5 star ratings from the NHSTA.
If you are only going to have one vehicle I would suggest a Mini-Van. But get a good sized one!

I understand that the Escape's towing package allows towing of a trailer that weighs up to 3500 lbs. (with an assumed tongue weight of about 10% of that, or 350 lbs.). However, the trailer dealer tells me it is likely that I will need a class III hitch (as opposed to the Escape's class II hitch) with air shocks added to the vehicle.
Any advice from those who have experience towing (especially with the Escape) would be appreciated!

I have 800 miles on mine. I am getting about 17mpg with about 80% city driving. I hope if gets better. There are people getting 20-24 mpg right out of the box. I hate them!

How far will you be towing this trailer?
I can only go by what I have read but here it goes.
If the trailer is 2500 lbs Empty I wouldn't get the Escape. That would be a really heavy duty trailer and I can only Assume you would be hauling something in it that was heavy!
If the trailer is 2500 lbs Full (like a camper or something) you probably will be fine. I have read some threads of people towing campers that size that said it was a piece of cake. You can find out more by going to the Ford Escape Club at Yahoo http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/thefordescapeclub

BUT
If the trailer manufacturer recommends a class 3 hitch then you gotta go that route You never want some one to be able to say (after a wreck) "It says right here in the manual...."

I'd like to see some evidence of *any* engine failing when an oil with the viscosity of the next higher range from the manufacturer's recommendation was substituted.
Is it true that an engine which is recommended by the manufacturer to use something like 10w-30 dino oil when 10w-40 dino oil was substituted

I'd like to see some documented evidence of an engine designed for 5w-20 dino failing when 5w-30 synthetic was substituted. Unfortunately, since the engines that supposedly *must* have 5w-20 dino have just recently been introduced, there won't be any, which is a rather convenient situation for people interested in furthering the cause of a brand new weight of oil.
Frankly, this sounds like Ford propaganda perpetuated by columnists who either don't know any better or are simply hedging their bets (just in case). This misinformation is most likely designed to force the acceptance of 5w-20 dino oil and to take advantage of the current relative scarcity of 5w-20, forcing consumers to buy the Motorcraft brand which, in turn, improves Ford's bottom line.
By designing an engine that requires a higher maintenance schedule forcing the consumer to buy more product certainly doesn't hurt the oil or automotive parts industry, either. With the thinner 5w-20 oil, owners now have to make certain to change their oil at the required intervals.
What's next, an engine that runs on 5w-10 dino oil exclusively? It'd get great gas mileage, except the oil would have to be changed every 1000 miles.
I waited 94 days for the car. When I ordered it, the Giants had just won the NFC Championship (Jan 14th).
I haven't put Sirius in the car yet. I need to get a separator for the back or he'll jump into the back seat to be closer to me. By the way, he looks for BOMBS not DRUGS !
I'll start checking the mileage after this tank, since the dealer filled it (@ a nominal fee of course).

4 weeks is real short!! That is great news. There are a few people over at yahoo that just ordered and are wondering how long it takes.
Do all dealers in your area charge to fill the gas tank?!! In Wisconsin it is expected that the tank be full on delivery - no charge!

Motorcraft 5w-20 is selling at Walmart for $1.29 per qt. which seems reasonable.
If one chooses to use Mobil 1 why wouldn't 0w-30 be a better choice than 5w-30?
I am also seriously considering purchasing the Escape for the purpose of towing up to 3000 lbs. I currently tow 2000 lbs with a 114 hp Volvo, which is pretty much the max I would recommend for this horsepower. I would love to hear from you and anyone else about towing experiences with the Escape or Tribute, especially in the hills. (email tclyatt@jps.net) One tip I received from a test editor was to purchase a surge type brake controller. I have no experience with this type of brake controller, but it should be an improvement over the low end time based brake controller. I definitely recommend brakes on anything over 1500 lbs.
About 60 posts back there is something about unibody not being a good tow structure. Could the writer be more specific about why he disagrees with Ford's blessing for towing up to 3500 lbs with the Escape?
All information would be helpful. The only reason I am looking at buying the Escape is for more towing power than my Volvo. I test drove a 96 Explorer and it was a dog without the trailer.
I'm sorry I don't remember the page I got this information from. I think I used '5w-20' as the keyword for a search and one of the links that came up had the info.
I wouldn't trust 5w-20 dino oil for 5000 miles. It's so thin, I can't help but think it would break down much sooner than a heavier oil. That's what's nice about Mobil 1. It maintains its lubrication ability for a much longer time, while still being a thinner consistancy.
I remember when Mobil 1 first came out. I think they used to say it could be used for something like 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes, but they backed off from that rather quickly. I still think it can be ran for that long, but I don't risk it.
None of the discount places had 5w-20, including Wal-Mart, but I haven't checked recently, either.
Traveling in the mountains was a bit different though. While on level ground, the PM gauge while transiting around 70 mph was typically around 4500 5000 ram. Without the trailer, it's a good 1500 rpm less. Since Missouri is a good distance from Pennsylvania, the car was driven for more than 14 hours with the tach at or above 75% of it's maximum RPM.
Within the past 4 years of owning the car, I have made this trip only 3 times. Within all these years, the car has never faltered or required any maintance beyond regular oil changes.
So, can Escape handle 3000 lbs? I wouldn't ask my car to pull this weight but perhaps someone can explain how the Escape likely weighs more (yes/no?) than the Taurus be capable of carrying an additional 1000 lbs.

Actually, the IIHS offset crash test does reflect a real world scenario where an oncoming car suddenly drifts over the centre divider and into your lane. The deformable barrier that the IIHS uses is designed to simulate the impact energy of another vehicle of similar weight.

PS - LOVED the Escape handling, turning and power of the V6; 6' man sat in back with inches to spare for knees and head; plus, the 310lb salesman stood on the side step bars and they didn't make a noise or move - very impressive!

He did say a $540 destination fee was included, as well as a $150 dealer prep charge, nothing about an advertising fee. Salesguy said the prep was "unwrapping the car, washing it, making sure it has everything on it as ordered, etc." But, the Escape I drove was on the lot as a rejected special order; should I still pay a prep fee, on the X plan?
PS - he is sending back my eaa PIN# form and the $50 web certificate, filled out.

It is true that in most cases you are not required to supply the number and it may be that the police are not allowed to ask for it but you are generalizing.
You are correct when you state that Federal Law says you do not have to give your ssn (in most cases).. BUT.. that does not make it illegal to ask. If that were the case, every employer in America along with every financial institution would have been shut down by now. As well as every school. And don't forget the IRS. I could go on and on but I think you get my point.
A person is protected by law and not REQUIRED to disclose his or hers SSN. This does not make it a crime to ask for it.

Schools have no right to ask. I applied to Discover for a credit card and they asked. I told them no way, and they still gave it to me.
It is most definitely illegal to ask (other than for Soc.Sec. purposes). Trouble is, without any penalty, there is no reason NOT to ask.

This made me eligible for the X.-plan. I got my member ID in less that 24 hours, got my pin from Ford in about 10 minutes, called my dealer, told him I was eligible for the X.-plan. That's it. I paid about $100.00 below invoice.
