I doubt there'd be a problem. It used to be that oil needed to be changed right away in a new vehicle, the idea being to get any tiny shavings out of a just put-together engine. The other thing about putting synthetic in a brand-new engine was that the parts hadn't really 'meshed' together and by putting an extremely light-weight oil in at an early stage, the parts would not be able to 'mesh' like they would with the heavier, recommended dino oil. I don't think it's very good to use synthetic with brand new oil seals, either.

However, with Ford running such a light-weight oil that is damn near the same viscosity as synthetic from the beginning in all of their engines, I would think they're somehow accounting for all of this in their manufacturing process.

I'm no mechanic, and I've read stories where Ford mechanics are saying things like the 5w-20 *must* be used and even some outlandish stuff like you can't change your oil until *after* 5000 miles. But after reading up on the oil itself, it just doesn't look like that big of a deal to use the 5w-30 Mobil 1 instead of the 5w-20 Motorcraft, so that's what I'm going to do.

I don't think I'd run something like 10w-30 dino oil in one, though. That sounds like taking a much bigger chance than the synthetic. Honda runs the 5w-20 weight in their engines, too, and I read somewhere that the engines have such tight tolerances that even 10w-30 is too heavy and will prevent the engine from starting if it begins to get just a *little* cold outside.

Have enjoyed this board for months, long before I bought my Escape, now thought I would finally contribute my two cents:

Near Thanksgiving 2000, I ordered an Escape XLT 2WD, Automatic, Sun Roof, Privacy Glass, Side Air Bags. $100 over invoice at Pacifico Ford at the Philly automall.

Car arrived around January 25. I took delivery on February 10th. Now have 2200 miles on it.

General opinion: LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!

This is my first SUV, which I never thought I could afford, and I'm loving every damn minute.

Love the MPG. Sorry, folks, but I'm getting 23.7 MPG -- combined -- on this car rated EPA 18/24. A couple tanks actually BEAT the EPA for highway. The mileage seems to be getting a little better as I break it in. I drive very conservative (about 58 MPH on our 55 speed limit highways, no sudden starts, and I coast to stoplights), and about 85% of my miles are highway. If you're not getting similar mileage, then I blame the way you're driving, or maybe you drive more city miles. My advice: Slow down. You'll get there, and you'll get there alive.

I like the height of the driver's position. For a mini-SUV, I really feel like I'm well above everyone else. Not the feeling of driving a firetruck like the Explorer gives, but then, what else does?

I really like the room in the backseat, which has been used only twice when driving, for taking my nephew and a friend skiing (with room for the skis, thanks to the 60/40 bench). But move the front seats forward, and there's tons of room to get comfortable with my girlfriend when parked. Almost as much room as in my apartment. Put the back seat down, and we can lie down somewhat comfortably.

The Escape supplies slightly warm air to the cabin very, very, quickly, after only about 2000 RPM-minutes (example: 2 minutes engine idling at 1000 RPM).

It has a good ride, but I'm not an expert on handling and so on. I DO NOT notice the infamous fuel smell nor extra road noise, unless I make use of the sun roof/moonroof.

Lots of nifty places to put maps, junk, and nick-nacks. The removable, covered, ashtray which fits in a cup holder is ingenious. It's an amazingly simple but handy feature. I put my loose change in the ashtray, and can keep the ashtray in the cupholder or move the ashtray elsewhere if I want to use the extra cupholder.

I do wish the interior wasn't as plastic as it is, but I got used to the plastic dash. But I can't help notice the cheapish looking interior door panel, because the little bit of fabric they stick there actually makes the rest of the plastic portions stand out.

    But, it's not perfect:
I have adjusted to the seat, but originally, it was uncomfortable for my body. The bench part (the part you sit your butt on) seemed to be a little short. The Explorer bench seemed to be longer and fuller, and more comfortable.

I really, really, wish the Escape had a nifty compass/temperature console option like the Explorer.

Don't like the shift lever in the way of the radio, but that's not reason not to buy a car. You'll deal with it.

Hate the hidden location of the ignition keyhole. Its a silly thing to worry about, but its bothersome.

I asked Pacifico NOT to put the mileage-reducing crossbars on the roof rack (they came in a separate box). I've never used a roof rack in my life. Sure enough, they put them on. Ugh.

I was very, very, disappointed in the loan service. I applied online at Ford's web site, got 4.9% interest. Got a phone call the next day from the dealer, confirming the 4.9%. I had an online account with Ford, promising the 4.9%. Of course, on the day I ordered it, the dealer had no idea where I got 4.9% from, since the Ford incentives were only 7.9%. They did not honor the 4.9% rate, so I got the loan elsewhere.

That's all off the top of my head. I just feel good IN the car, and feel good ABOUT the car. I thought it was a good deal on a good car.

I am very seriously considering the Escape. I've test driven them many times and I would like some input from those of you who have children as passangers. I have a small child and am expecting another one later this year, is there adequate room for this to be a "family car"? Any input from Escape/Tribute owners is greatly appreciated.
  • curreycurrey Member Posts: 144
However, my wife is 7+ months pregnant and that is why we went shopping for a new car. We wanted a family car that was reliable and under warranty for a few years (miles, we do alot of driving). To this end we decided on the Tribute. Not only does it have enough space for me in the front, I am 6'1", it has a comfortable back seat for adults, thus, enough room for children. My wife liked the fact that it was easier for her to get in and out of (being a little less mobile thanks to the pregnancy). I thought the large doors to the back seat will make getting new baby Currey in and out of the SUV a little easier. And don't forget there are three roof anchors for child seats in the back (I think you can only put two child seats in at a time, however, the three anchors help in placing those seats where you want them - I could be wrong on this).

Hey, as far as child seats go, are you going to get a new infant carrier? Which one are you looking at or suggest I look at? I think I am going to go with the new one by Peg Perego (will work with their 2001 strollers).

Anyway that is my two cents, feel free to email me if you have any specific questions as to the Escape/Tribute. Hope your pregnancy is going well.

Several car columists have come out with warnings about going to any 5w30 (dino or syn) use in an engine designed for 5w20. It may run just fine for awhile, but eventually, the engine will fail prematurely due to the increased friction. The world is evolving and it sometimes is necessary to change our way of thinking.

The Tribute's SUV-hating (Edmunds) reviewer found room in her heart for it after all last month, after being swayed by its 200-horsepower V6 engine, car-like handling and good looks:

Thanks for the input! That the kind of stuff I like to see.

I am glad you are loving your Escape as much as I love mine.

My Seats are quite comfortable (leather) but I have short legs and a long torso. Otherwise I tend to agree with your dislikes but, as you pointed out, they are minor and I would buy the SUV all over again!

    Happy Escaping!

I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old. Last weekend we loaded everything into the Escape And headed to the in-laws house. Everything fit fine, including they're bikes!

    However.......

The Only reason we took the Escape was because it is so new. Normally we take the Chevy Venture. It has alot more room and the kids can put the seats back a little if they want to nap. If you have a dog the Escape is out! Once you put yourself, spouse & kids in the Escape along with all your goodies there will be no room for the dog. On the other hand, the Escape/Tribute just got 5 star ratings from the NHSTA.

If you are only going to have one vehicle I would suggest a Mini-Van. But get a good sized one!

    Hope I helped,

Guess what? I picked up my 4WD/XLT today. Great car. gotta get used to the power & braking. I drove a Celica for 8 years.
Oh yeah, about that comment concerning the dog, as you can probably tell by my "handle", this is the REASON I bought this car. LOL

Has anyone had any experience towing with the Escape? I am considering the purchase of a V6 Escape to tow (about 5% of the time) a trailer that will weigh 2500 pounds with a tongue weight of 330 lbs. The rest of the time the vehicle will be used primarily as a commuter car, a kid mobile, and a dog hauler.

I understand that the Escape's towing package allows towing of a trailer that weighs up to 3500 lbs. (with an assumed tongue weight of about 10% of that, or 350 lbs.). However, the trailer dealer tells me it is likely that I will need a class III hitch (as opposed to the Escape's class II hitch) with air shocks added to the vehicle.

Any advice from those who have experience towing (especially with the Escape) would be appreciated!

All right!!! Great to hear that you got your Escape. What color is it again? If I recall correctly you only had to wait about 4 weeks?

About the dog... You probably don't bring the wife and kids along when you go out looking for heroin or mass murders! :) I bring my dog in the Escape all the time, just not when I got a full load!

I have 800 miles on mine. I am getting about 17mpg with about 80% city driving. I hope if gets better. There are people getting 20-24 mpg right out of the box. I hate them! :)

BTW, how does rover like it?

Good luck and keep us updated on your adventures.

Is that 2500 lbs Full or empty?

The tongue weight on the Escape is 350 lbs.

How far will you be towing this trailer?

I can only go by what I have read but here it goes.

If the trailer is 2500 lbs Empty I wouldn't get the Escape. That would be a really heavy duty trailer and I can only Assume you would be hauling something in it that was heavy!

If the trailer is 2500 lbs Full (like a camper or something) you probably will be fine. I have read some threads of people towing campers that size that said it was a piece of cake. You can find out more by going to the Ford Escape Club at Yahoo http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/thefordescapeclub

I know I read a post there awhile back about someone that towed a camper through the mountains with no problems.

    BUT

If the trailer manufacturer recommends a class 3 hitch then you gotta go that route You never want some one to be able to say (after a wreck) "It says right here in the manual...."

I am highly suspect of car columnists recommending against using 5w-30 synthetic in an engine where the manufacturer has recommended 5w-20 dino.

I'd like to see some evidence of *any* engine failing when an oil with the viscosity of the next higher range from the manufacturer's recommendation was substituted.

Is it true that an engine which is recommended by the manufacturer to use something like 10w-30 dino oil when 10w-40 dino oil was substituted
"...run just fine for awhile, but eventually, the engine will fail prematurely due to the increased friction"?

I'd like to see some documented evidence of an engine designed for 5w-20 dino failing when 5w-30 synthetic was substituted. Unfortunately, since the engines that supposedly *must* have 5w-20 dino have just recently been introduced, there won't be any, which is a rather convenient situation for people interested in furthering the cause of a brand new weight of oil.

Frankly, this sounds like Ford propaganda perpetuated by columnists who either don't know any better or are simply hedging their bets (just in case). This misinformation is most likely designed to force the acceptance of 5w-20 dino oil and to take advantage of the current relative scarcity of 5w-20, forcing consumers to buy the Motorcraft brand which, in turn, improves Ford's bottom line.

By designing an engine that requires a higher maintenance schedule forcing the consumer to buy more product certainly doesn't hurt the oil or automotive parts industry, either. With the thinner 5w-20 oil, owners now have to make certain to change their oil at the required intervals.

What's next, an engine that runs on 5w-10 dino oil exclusively? It'd get great gas mileage, except the oil would have to be changed every 1000 miles.

    4 weeks!!!
I waited 94 days for the car. When I ordered it, the Giants had just won the NFC Championship (Jan 14th).
I haven't put Sirius in the car yet. I need to get a separator for the back or he'll jump into the back seat to be closer to me. By the way, he looks for BOMBS not DRUGS !
I'll start checking the mileage after this tank, since the dealer filled it (@ a nominal fee of course).

Sirius. What a great name for a Dog! What kind is he? You probably wouldn't want to bring the Wife and tater tots along to find a bomb either!

4 weeks is real short!! That is great news. There are a few people over at yahoo that just ordered and are wondering how long it takes.

Do all dealers in your area charge to fill the gas tank?!! In Wisconsin it is expected that the tank be full on delivery - no charge!

BTW, In case no one has said it lately, thanks for helping to keep us all safe.

The Ford reccomended oil change is 5000 miles. That doesn't seem like they have shortened the change interval drastically.

Motorcraft 5w-20 is selling at Walmart for $1.29 per qt. which seems reasonable.

If one chooses to use Mobil 1 why wouldn't 0w-30 be a better choice than 5w-30?
  • tclyatttclyatt Member Posts: 7
The rated load of a class 2 hitch is 3500 lbs and 350 lb tongue rate. I would therefore assume that if your trailer is less weight than this that a class 2 hitch would work just fine. My experience with a lot of trailer supplies is that they stock a lot of class 3 stuff and don't want to be bothered with class 2. Remember, the majority of RV owners want big trailers.

I am also seriously considering purchasing the Escape for the purpose of towing up to 3000 lbs. I currently tow 2000 lbs with a 114 hp Volvo, which is pretty much the max I would recommend for this horsepower. I would love to hear from you and anyone else about towing experiences with the Escape or Tribute, especially in the hills. (email tclyatt@jps.net) One tip I received from a test editor was to purchase a surge type brake controller. I have no experience with this type of brake controller, but it should be an improvement over the low end time based brake controller. I definitely recommend brakes on anything over 1500 lbs.

About 60 posts back there is something about unibody not being a good tow structure. Could the writer be more specific about why he disagrees with Ford's blessing for towing up to 3500 lbs with the Escape?

All information would be helpful. The only reason I am looking at buying the Escape is for more towing power than my Volvo. I test drove a 96 Explorer and it was a dog without the trailer.

IIRC, the flow characteristics of 5w-30 Mobil 1 were the closest to those of 5w-20 Motorcraft. The 0w-30 might be better for use in colder climate areas.

I'm sorry I don't remember the page I got this information from. I think I used '5w-20' as the keyword for a search and one of the links that came up had the info.

I wouldn't trust 5w-20 dino oil for 5000 miles. It's so thin, I can't help but think it would break down much sooner than a heavier oil. That's what's nice about Mobil 1. It maintains its lubrication ability for a much longer time, while still being a thinner consistancy.

I remember when Mobil 1 first came out. I think they used to say it could be used for something like 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes, but they backed off from that rather quickly. I still think it can be ran for that long, but I don't risk it.

None of the discount places had 5w-20, including Wal-Mart, but I haven't checked recently, either.

I don't own an Escape but I do own a Ford Taurus with the same V6 engine (I believe) as the Escape carries. I can recall all the details but within the first 2 weeks of owning my Taurus, I transported a -haul enclosed trailer with at least a 2000 b. load which is the maximum this car should tow. All -haul trailers note that should not exceed 50 mph which was never a problem when running on level ground. Actually I found myself fizzing almost all others all the while trying not exceed 80 mph.

Traveling in the mountains was a bit different though. While on level ground, the PM gauge while transiting around 70 mph was typically around 4500 5000 ram. Without the trailer, it's a good 1500 rpm less. Since Missouri is a good distance from Pennsylvania, the car was driven for more than 14 hours with the tach at or above 75% of it's maximum RPM.

Within the past 4 years of owning the car, I have made this trip only 3 times. Within all these years, the car has never faltered or required any maintance beyond regular oil changes.

So, can Escape handle 3000 lbs? I wouldn't ask my car to pull this weight but perhaps someone can explain how the Escape likely weighs more (yes/no?) than the Taurus be capable of carrying an additional 1000 lbs.

I was being sarcastic about the 4 weeks. 94 days = 3 months & a week. Worth the wait though.

Very disspointed in marginal score. I have a Tribute. Yes, I know these are tests, not real world etc., but Ford/Mazda knew they were designing to pass these tests. I know they're going to publish some kind of PR relase where they say their disappointed but they think vehicle is safe ya ya ya, BUT I think they owe the customers a serious answer why they weren't up to the design challenge. Yes they got high ratings on front and side government test, but so does last year's Blazer. I bought the Trib before tests figuring that though they couldn't get all the stuff bolted on right when building it, they would at least do a good job with a clean sheet design knowing how important safety is. I'm not wasting a stamp to write customer relations, and they're too scared to put an email address on their website. So if you're lurking out there, Ford/Mazda, WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?

I visited my local Ford dealer today. There were NO Escapes to be found. But, there will be one coming in tens days with exactly the options and color that I want. I'm getting it for $250 over invoice. And I'm wanting to use the X-Plan. (Salesman highly encourages me to use it, said it would save me $600) Question is, how do I get signed up? I read previous messages saying to go to www.eaa.org. Is that all I need to know? What exactly am I signing up for? Advice Please!!

"Yes, I know these are tests, not real world etc., but Ford/Mazda knew they were designing to pass these tests"

Actually, the IIHS offset crash test does reflect a real world scenario where an oncoming car suddenly drifts over the centre divider and into your lane. The deformable barrier that the IIHS uses is designed to simulate the impact energy of another vehicle of similar weight.

X-Plan is deal worked out between eaa.org (pilot's org) and a purchasing plan. Its just another group purchaing plan. It may or may not get you your best deal. I used autobytel and got mine for $85 over invoice.

You do have to join eaa ($40 I think); don't forget to factor this into your purchase plan.

went to Ford dealer Mon, drove the XLS V6 4X4 around a large city block in rain and morning rush hour (I live in the country so it wasn't a real life test for me, but...) then back to the dealer for the number crunching. I told the guy I was on the X-plan through EAA; he never heard of it, and said he couldn't give me a price until he had my PIN #. gave him the form I printed off the EAA site, he took it to his manager who checked it out. The sales guy returned and asked for my SSN#, to verify my EAA pin #; I was reluctant, thinking he might do stuff I didn't want him to do at this point. Eventually he returned with a handwritten note with a price on it, and said it was under invoice (XLS, 4x4, V6, con group) at $20558. I didn't see any dealer invoice with the A plan price, was I supposed to? or only if I committed to buy (which I did not). I also took my $50 Escape test drive web certificate, and he kept that along with my PIN# form from EAA. Is this why I should have talked with the fleet manager instead of a salesguy? He said all he needs to hold this rig for me was $500 or a credit card, neither of which I gave him. Said he could order one w/8wk delivery now.
PS - LOVED the Escape handling, turning and power of the V6; 6' man sat in back with inches to spare for knees and head; plus, the 310lb salesman stood on the side step bars and they didn't make a noise or move - very impressive!

Do you mean Social Security number?

NEVER NEVER NEVER give your SSN out to anyone.

Did you know it is illegal for someone to even ask for your SSN?

Now I really feel bad. At least I got side air bags. I'm telling the people laughing at me (a not insignificant number)for buying this vehicle that it's safe because I don't make any turns and don't plan on any evasive maneuvers.

Don't let the salesman keep Your original PIN printout and Test Drive certificate, he wants to Hold you as His customer. He can have photocopies. He needs the SSN you gave EAA in applying for your PIN# so he can confirm the authenticity your PIN# on Ford's computer. I delt with an experienced Fleet manager (who handles all the Plans) and only gave $100 earnest money deposit by credit card. When you order, the DORA (dealers order receipt acknowledgement) prints out at the dealer the next day. Get a copy. It will have an "A Plan" price which you can multiply by 1.04 to get your "X Plan" price. It will also have your dealer# and order# which you will need if you want to track your truck on Ford's telephone accessed computer. You will pay only what is on the Factory Invoice that is delivered with the car and that may also include a corporate advertising charge. If the price has increased since you ordered as a Sold Retail Order and paid a Deposit, ask for Ford's Price Protection Policy on the original price (Bring the DORA) The Most important thing is to take Enough time to select Exactly what configuration you want if you order! If you want to buy off a lot using X, look around widely at many dealers and only contact with Fleet.

    You are incorrect.

Anyone can ask for your social security number, you just are not require to give it, except to your employer and some banking transactions.

Picked up my new Wedgewood Blue 4WD XLT tonight. It came as an exchange from a dealer in Northern Wisconsin, so it had a few hundred miles on it, but looks and drives great! Cost was so close to X Plan that it wasn't worth waiting 8+ weeks for exactly what I wanted. The only option on this vehicle was the 6-cylinder engine, but I'm going to have window tinting, step bars and a flip-up (not electric) sun roof done as aftermarket additions for about the same or less than the factory options. Note to Chicago area buyers: Arlington Heights Ford has, as of tonight, four 4WD XLTs (black and green) that they obtained from a leasing company. They've been titled, but have less than 2O miles on them. If you want a loaded XLT (leather, side air bags, etc.) see A.H. Ford. Ask for my pal Mort, who's a great low-key sales guy. I've bought two vehicles from him within the last year and highly recommend both him and the dealership. A.H Ford also had a couple of 4WD XLS vehicles (black) with the 6 if you want to save some cash.

thanks for the detailed answers to my 'story'! it really explained a lot about the role of salesman and fleet mgr. and the X plan.
He did say a $540 destination fee was included, as well as a $150 dealer prep charge, nothing about an advertising fee. Salesguy said the prep was "unwrapping the car, washing it, making sure it has everything on it as ordered, etc." But, the Escape I drove was on the lot as a rejected special order; should I still pay a prep fee, on the X plan?
PS - he is sending back my eaa PIN# form and the $50 web certificate, filled out.
thanks again for the info! DS

You don't even have to give it to the police. They too are barred from asking by FEDERAL LAW!!!
  • cugolfncugolfn Member Posts: 28
You are mistaken if you think that no one is allowed to ask for you SSN.
It is true that in most cases you are not required to supply the number and it may be that the police are not allowed to ask for it but you are generalizing.
You are correct when you state that Federal Law says you do not have to give your ssn (in most cases).. BUT.. that does not make it illegal to ask. If that were the case, every employer in America along with every financial institution would have been shut down by now. As well as every school. And don't forget the IRS. I could go on and on but I think you get my point.
A person is protected by law and not REQUIRED to disclose his or hers SSN. This does not make it a crime to ask for it.

I'm close to buying an Escape, but want to use the "X-plan" if possible. Where can I find this plan, and can anyone qualify? Also, I want to by this weekend - can I enroll in such short time? The x-plan sounds great, since dealers aren't coming off MSRP much at all in the Orlando, FL area. Thx - RR

    1. Read Post #172 and there are many other posts about X Plan..
    2. Give yourself enough time to know exactly what you want. Don't rush this! Be Prepared.
    3. Inform yourself about what all the dealers have without getting involved too soon.
4 Make All your Contacts Only with the Fleet Manager, he understands and handles the Plans.

Thanks to all who have posted on this board. The information about the X Plan helped me to buy a 2001 Escape XLT for 1% under invoice. It was the easiest transaction I have ever completed! My chrome yellow Escape was ordered on 3/10 and delivered to me yesterday, 4/26 (only 6.5 weeks!) I love to see heads turn as I drive down the road. Thanks again for everyone's help!

You're wrong. The employer has to ask for it because that is its purpose: to tax your income for retirement (simplified).

Schools have no right to ask. I applied to Discover for a credit card and they asked. I told them no way, and they still gave it to me.

It is most definitely illegal to ask (other than for Soc.Sec. purposes). Trouble is, without any penalty, there is no reason NOT to ask.

I signed up for EAA at http://www.eaa.org.
This made me eligible for the X.-plan. I got my member ID in less that 24 hours, got my pin from Ford in about 10 minutes, called my dealer, told him I was eligible for the X.-plan. That's it. I paid about $100.00 below invoice.

    Good Luck!

BTW, Also got a great loan rate from http://www.peoplefirst.com

in my area for the Escapes as I knew they would. A handful of Ford dealers are offering Excape V6 XLT's for 19988. This is not just one dealer or just one Escape its up to 6 at one dealer. Now I'm just waiting for the financiang speciales to pop up...Patience is paying off...

My Escape has leather, sunroof, V6, side step bars, tinted glass. It is replacing my '92 Eddie Bauer Explorer that has 203K miles! So far, it is a blast to drive. Lots of pep!

Do the leather seats ever soften up on the Escape?
I'm about to purchase and find the leather to be less comfortable than the cloth velour on the XLE. I do like the other goodies that come with the leather package, though - very good pricing for leather too! By the way, thanks for the -Plan info - saves a bundle!!! AR

Ditto on the message above regarding the leather. We too are close to purchasing Escape with leather option. Any comments on comfort of it would be appreciated.

I am looking for an SUV and am seriously considering the Escape. I have driven alot of SUV's in the Escape's class. I love the look, feel, and power of the escape V6. I am very concerned with gas mileage....could anyone tell me what their actual mpg is in the city and highway? Your reply would be greatly appreciated--thank you.
