The manual states 6.5 Quarts with oilfilter change.I called two different dealerships speaking to the service dept and was told 7 quarts by one dealership and 8 quarts by another dealership.I had the person in both cases confirm this with one their technicians and was told the same thing.

To Gania: Yes you can get a cd changer by ordering the PM package.Yes you can get an alarm by having a Viper Alarm system installed by going outside the dealership for approximately 250 dollars.I did just that plus you get a remote that unlocks the doors.

Recently, some people asked about the safety of using the Sequoia in 4 wheel drive all the time. I posted a link to an explanation I wrote, but I have since posted this in its entirety here at Edmunds. It is too long to post here so I opened a new topic. For any who are interested in how the Active-Trac system works and how it differs from "normal" 4WD system and AWD systems like the Highlander has, go to this link.

Stephenie your brilliant hindsight 5 months after the fact is not too surprising.
    -----------------
"I'm talking about everyone who ordered an SR5 with the PM Package all over the nation, not just the SE Region."

I wager to bet that SE region was not unique in being surprised about lack of heated seats when a SR5+PM finally rolled on their lots. Ignorance
of the misprint was the norm.
    -------------------
"Come on...Look at the prices there are definitely going to be differences"

There are plenty of differnces that people are willing to pay extra for the Limited. At the same time there are lots of other people that the the xtra money spent is not a good value. You can be sure that people buying Limited in 2000 were not buying Limiteds because they thought "Oh the price differnce is due to the fact that there is a misprint in the brochure and you don't get heated seats with the SR5+PM."
    ------------------
"There needs to be consumer awareness too. You can't believe everything you read...You need to check it out"

Give me a break. The brochure says you get heated seats. The salesman says it. The car-buyer website says it. So what exactly are you asking us to do to "check it out" further??

If you compare the price of port added leather versus PM and its goodies there is a very logical
difference that is explained by the heated seats being in the PM package. Why on Gods green earth would we be EXPECTING a misprint??

    ---------------------
"You can't take the Limited out for a drive and expect that's what the SR5 is going to be like"

There is nothing to TEST DRIVE about a HEATING PAD!! A heating pad is a heating pad! You act like we were test driving a Yugo to see if we should purchase the Sequoia.
    ------------------------
"I also don't remember seeing leather side doors listed under the PM Package options in the brochure. So if it's not included in the description wouldn't you ask?"

I sit in a Limited and the door sides are leather. I sit in a SR5 with port added leather and it has leather sides. I pay $3000 dollars for a leather package and for some wild, inconcievable reason I assumed it would show up with the 1 square foot to cover part of the door. What a nin-kom-poop I was for thinking Toyota would spend another dollar or two to do the job right! Who in their right mind would have been that immersed in the minutia of the car that they questioned this sliver of leather on the door.
Decodog, if you truly caught this before purchase on your own before it got on the web then you are even more detail driven then my engineer-self.
If I recall, even Dianne was caught off guard by cloth showing up on the PMs.

Does anybody else have the cargo cover and think it's a bit below Toyota's typical level of quality. I got one but I'm not too happy with it. It actually mounts in two places, in front of or behind the third row seets which is pretty cool. Too bad the cover material seems a bit cheap. The 2nd seat floormats suck because they don't fit very well. Looks like I'm going to have to search for those other better ones folks here have been talking about. Other than that my new Sequoia with only 40 miles seems to be running fine. Cool!!!

What's the best pricing out there now on the Limited? Is anyone getting below asking, and how much? I'm selling my '99 Lexus LX470 and getting the Sequoia Limited. I live in St. Louis and am looking for the silver sky metallic. I did the internet search a couple of years ago on the Lexus and bought out of Florida, knocking $6000 off of St. Louis prices. I know those deals aren't available on the Sequoia, but it would be very helpful to know the best price people are getting. Thanks.
  • nighter50nighter50 Member Posts: 127
if you went to Florida before checkout http://www.carsontoyota.com/index.htm. Dianne was advertising $1199 over invoice on 4X4 Limiteds yesterday. I think they want to move 4X4s (799 over on SR5). Also, periodically check this link, http://www.jimbarkleytoyota.com/pricing/new_cars/inventory.asp?model_id=93

I dont know if these are the best deals you can get but it is a start.

I finally took the Sequoia for a test drive. The ride is smooth and refined,as well as it's fit and finish!I checked out an SR5 and noticed that the side view mirrors do retract maNUALLY.

The dealership was PACKED but at least I got a chance to test drive it.I don't know...maybe I can do without the amenities of the Limited and just order a Chestnut SR5.....hmmmmmmm?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The chestnut will be discontinued for the 2002 model year.
  • adebisi1adebisi1 Member Posts: 50
Discontinued cliffy1? So I suppose it's not selling so well huh?
  • reticent1reticent1 Member Posts: 70
The SoCal region pretty much deleted that color after the first wave of cars landed. The desert sand and the thunder gray pretty much cover the two-tone spectrum, and many are not well-received. The chestnut can still be order built for 2001 but it's history for 2002 model year according to Toyota. That color's been here at this store due to an order build my partner did for someone, and although it wasn't half bad to my own eyes, it just isn't "mainstream" enough. I vote for a darker navy blue, and a more blended look for the two tone sand and thunder gray colors in the SR5 models.

Interesting about the noise reduction approach under the hood. I drove an SR5 today and it seemed ultra quiet. You say you keep your SR5 in 4x4 mode all the time. I often keep my trooper in that mode and it is fine for the torque-on-demand system. Is toyota's active-trac on the SR5 similar to this, proportioning more split to the fronts as necessary? Also, I noticed that the VSC off only lit up on the dash when in 4WD mode on turning that button to off. Does VSC function in 2WD or only 4WD mode?--thanks for any input lcd1, or by anyone else with info on the sequoia 4wd system.

I just wanted to add a little bit to the alarm conversation. I had a CODE alarm added to my SR5 and they used the third button to roll down the back window like the factory remote. I wanted this so I wouldn't have to carry both remotes because I really like this feature.
  • nighter50nighter50 Member Posts: 127
I see you are looking at the Sequoia. I have read your posts in the Isuzu owners club. I recently got a Sequoia (SR5 4X4). The link below should answer some of your questions. I only got the truck a few days ago so dont have much to report except...it is big and it has a more refined drive than the trooper. I love the trooper but I think I will love this too (I do like having a little more power!). I just hope it is as reliable as the trooper has been. Good Luck and I will let you know more as the miles go by.

Yes, the mirrors can be manually retracted. I must do this every time I have to pull it into the garage. A bit of a pain but you get used to it.
  • sender1sender1 Member Posts: 43
I took the Limited for a test drive and DID expect it to be like the SR5. It's the SAME truck. Most people understand the only difference are the few esthetic differences (leather, hammertone trim etc). When you take a car for a test drive you want to see how it drives and handles. Why shouldn't a limited and an sr5 be expected to perform the same?

I think us analytical types are very keen to these types of details and yes I am a very detail-oriented person. It must have something to with being left-brained. I like your responses to stephanief2's comments and I support you all the way. I think we have made a good case for the heated seats issue and deserve some form of compensation.

srsullivan stated: "I'm selling my '99 Lexus LX470 and getting the Sequoia Limited. I live in St. Louis and am looking for the silver sky metallic."

Wow! I find your decision to get rid of your LX470 for a Sequoia Limited very interesting. I mean the only obvious advantage to the Sequoia would be size and space but the LX470 is probably the ultimate luxury SUV on the planet. Why are you looking to make this trade? What do you find more appealing about the Sequoia over your LX470? I would be surprised it there were not a few 01 Sequoia Limited owners who would trade you even up for your 99 LX470. I don't have a Limited but I do have a 01 silver sky Sequoia SR-5 4X4 with every available factory option except side air bags (sticker $41710). It also has heated seats with the factory switches and the factory fog lights with factory Tundra dash switch. It has 5000 miles. I live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Want to trade?
  • srsullivansrsullivan Member Posts: 3
Don't get me wrong - I love the LX470. But it's too much luxury for my phase of life right now. I have 3 kids (including a 6-month old) plus 4 stepkids (who always want to borrow the Lexus), 2 big dogs and a weekend "farm" where we haul the kids and animals (my husband has a Suburban). I wash it constantly because it drives me crazy to see spit-up, ketchup, and crumbs in my 470. It's the perfect vehicle for later in life, but the luxury is a bit wasted on me now. My husband believes I should trade in my car every two years (don't get me started on this one - I don't think it's necessary) and now's the time. I drove the Sequoia, loved it and thought - it's crazy to spend the extra money on a '01 LX470 for what I really need.

With regards to the trade, I just started doing my homework on selling the Lexus, which I intend to do myself(vs. trading in at a dealer). My initial internet research, given the 31K miles and option package, shows I should be able to get $42,500 (I'd probably ask $45K in an ad). But I know from experience that the 470's are short in St. Louis, so I need to look in the paper and call a dealer to check the going prices. I'll let you know. I thought I'd find the Sequoia before advertising the Lexus, since I want a certain color. I have to admit the side airbags are important to me with the kids.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
thanks--I read back through these posts and found the link to a write-up by cliffy. Apparenty there are three open diffs that allow the use of the sequoia under under dry or any conditions. The drive train is different--it does use the brake to counteract slippage at a wheel when in 4WD mode--that seems a little odd but it must work fine. I have relaced our FORD windstar van ('98) with the 2001 sequoia--got a good trade-in (11.4k) and 1k over invoice on the sequoia. So--I am a sequoia owner as well as a '99 trooper owner. Picking it up today so I'll let you know what I think.

When will dealers start taking orders for '02 Sequoia?

    What changes might it have?

    Thanks.
  • decodogdecodog Member Posts: 27
Srsullivan: Thanks, I understand where you are coming from now. I have two kids myself (ages 3 and 7) and thus really do not need a vehicle quite as large as the Sequoia. The LX470 would be perfectly sized for my family. I certainly would not want to talk you out of side air bags but if my information is correct the side air bags protect front seat occupants only. Second and third row occupants do not benefit from the side air bags. Thus, in my case, my kids are always in the back seats and thus would not receive any protection from the side air bags. In addition, I have heard tremendous things about the Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) feature on the Sequoia and believe that it will do a good job in preventing the most common type of SUV rollovers in the first place. That is my two cents. If this option is important to you however then you definitely should have it. Let me know if you become interested in a trade for my vehicle as it sounds like it has everything else you are looking for. The drive from Cedar Rapids to St. Louis only takes 4.5 to 5 hours. Drove my Sequoia to St. Louis back in March for a short family vacation. Really enjoyed the ride!

Given the problems with Firestone Tries and the fact that Bridgestone is the same company, should I be concerned over the Bridgestone Tires on my new Sequoia? Have there been any reported problems with Bridgestone tires similar to the Fireston/Ford Explorer disaster?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The answer to your question is yes and no. The initial batch of Sequoias to come off the line were delayed for a couple of weeks because Toyota engineers discovered a cosmetic cut in the tires. This was very small and not deep. It did not affect the performance of the tire at all, but Toyota replaced every one of them before they left the factory. Toyota is very sensitive to tire issues after the Ford debacle(s).

The Firestone issue is unrelated to anything with a Bridgestone name on the side. The defective Firestones were built at one plant in the US and most were during a labor walkout. The Japanese built Bridgestones were completely unaffected by this.

As a potential Sequoia owner I am interested in your comments in post #2588.

My understanding from the Toyota literature was that both the side impact and head airbags are only for front seat passengers. You mentioned that the head airbags are for first and second row passengers. But you also state that the head airbags run from the A pillar to B pillar, which to me means the front seat.

Can anyone comment? Do the side curtain airbags protect rear passengers? If so, that would be a tremendous benefit to me.

  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
It depends on what you are looking for. Cabelas is a good place to start for basic stuff like cargo mats and such. They are at www.cabelas.com and you may need to call them. I directed a participant there for rubber floor mats and they didn't list the Sequoia. She called them and they had them. Find what you want and check availability.

At my second fill-up, my manually computed gas mileage is 12.5 mpg. The computer reported 14.4mpg. My 3-mile trips to the office and back didn't help the gas mileage.

My engine has that tapping noise that people reported. I prematurely reported that my truck was o.k. Well, that was when we had a hot spell here in Norther VA. As the temperature dropped, the noise was so apparent. I called Toyota Cust. relation and received only an apology for the noise. Toyota then got a rep at my dealer to contact me to tell me that there is no bulletin for fixes from Toyota. According to him, Toyota said that the noise is normal.

Do LC or Lexus or Tundra have the same problem on their iForce engine?

Well, folks, I would be very much intested in participating in a class-action law suit, if there was one. That's all I have to say about the loud noise problem with my Seq.

If anyone has an idea where I can write to complaint about this, please let me know. I hate to be told to accept a defect.
  • lcd1lcd1 Member Posts: 147
I took out the third seats and but would like to put up a carrier so that my dogs would not hog up all the cargo space. Does anyone have a suggestion? I am not going to put a huge metal cage back there. I just want a partition. Thanks.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Actually, now I'm confused. But I'll let cliffy1 confirm or deny that the curtains are also for the 2nd row passengers. I always thought that the Sequoia's side curtains were for the 2nd row occupants too, however it appears from the website pictures that they may be only for the front occupants. If so, then I'm really surprised at this. Afterall, if they were going to add it in, why not for the 2nd row passengers too?

FWIW, I can tell you for sure that the '02 MB M-class SUV has standard equipment head protection curtain airbags that are for the rear occupants as well (A to C-pillars), as well as rear thorax/torso side impact airbags that deploy from the rear doors (front doors have them too, of course).

they are only for the front. There are actually 6 air bags up front. Beyond the two up front, you have four more for side impact protection. Each front seat has seams that burst and a small bag comes out to protect your torso. You also have the curtain that drops from the A-pillar for hear and neck protection. I am not a fan of the torso only bags, but I do like this curtain arrangement. There is no air bag protection for the back seat.

Does the security system with CQ package do the
    following
    1. Open the doors and turn the interior lights on as soon as turn the ignition to OFF position ?
    2. Automatically arm the system (in about 30 seconds) when all the doors are closed (even if
you don't press the LOCK key in keypad) ?
My Camry does these things and I expected Seq's
security system to behavce in similar manner.
    Thanks !
  • reticent1reticent1 Member Posts: 70
The "security" system in a Limited SEQ is different in an SR5 which is different than a 4Runner, which in turn is different than in a Camry and a Corolla.

The behavior of a security system in each model is as different, obviously, as the behavior of each of my kids. :>

The SR5 Seq has keyless entry. That isn't the same as an alarm system.

  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
It is the same between the Limited and SR5 with the CQ package. It is also the same as the one in the XLE Camry and XLS Avalon.

The trip computer is consistently 3 miles higher than my actual mileage. I consistently average in the 18-19 range according to the computer, when I actually get 15-16. This is not highway driving.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
You seem to be on a mission to make your vehicle silent. With a V8 under the hood I don't mind at least knowing when its running. How loud is this ticking noise you are referring to? Do you need the hood open to hear it? Does it go away on engine warm-up? Is is valve associated. I'm curious about it.
  • reticent1reticent1 Member Posts: 70
The "CQ" package for 2002 will drop the keyless entry part of the package to make folks who want keyless able to avoid the CQ (overhead console). They are also making fog lights an option for the SR5's as well. We lose the chestnut color and otherwise, the model "7920" (the 4wd SR5) will be produced in less numbers, instead upping the production of the 2WD SR5's and the Limiteds. No other color changes exist at this point.

First, I think my SR5 with CQ locks automatically when key is not in and doors are closed - how long it takes I am not sure - seemed longer than 30 seconds though.

As far as the mpg computer is concerned - I am glad that it is 3 miles per gallon off because I like believing that I am getting better mileage than I am! Ignorance is bliss...especially when it come to mileage in a Sequoia (or any large SUV).
  • 714cut714cut Member Posts: 355
FYI the Sequoia's in Canada come with Dunlop AT21 tires- no Bridgestones.
  • missemisse Member Posts: 22
We had one tire start to separate in January in town. Husband took it in and they immediately replaced it - "Gee, we've never seen this before, must be fluke, rest in great shape." Blew another in summer on highway - same song, second verse. Last one blew in Fort Stockton, TX on I 10. Tread damaged muffler and right rear quarter panel as it blew apart - kids and I collected fossils in the 100 degree sun. Moral: always be sure you have a spare and swiftly investigate any rumbling or uneven ride.
  • mmcgregormmcgregor Member Posts: 33
I feel your pain. Sorry to hear you got a ticker too. I've posted several times on the issue. I have a service report stating that Toyota is aware of a piston tolerance problem and is investigating. I'm convinced that my noise is from valves/lifters. As soon as I get a free Saturday I'm going to have a look at the valve clearance.

As far as the noise being "normal" I don't get it. If it was normal they would all do it. Let us know the conditions that it comes and goes.

I wonder if this is the kind of thing that can be resolved by a class action suit. Has anyone ever been in on one?
  • lcd1lcd1 Member Posts: 147
There is no need to open up the hood to hear the distinctive noise. It sounds like valve opening and closing, though I'm not really sure what is causing it. The noise would go away when the engine is warmed up or the temperature outside is warm.

I run 87 octane gas and get about 12.5mpg.

The regular engine noise is quiet and tolerable when idling or cruising. When accelerating, it roars. Some probably like the feel and hear the powerful engine. I'd prefer to feel but not hear it that loudly.
  • decodogdecodog Member Posts: 27
Do we know the details about the fog lamp option on the 2002 SR-5s. Is it an option or a dealer installed accessory kit? Will the fog lamp switch be on the headlamp column switch assembly like the Limited or will it be a dash mounted switch like on the Tundra? I think a lot of us who have already added factory fog lights to our 2001 SR-5s would like to know if our method was consistent with what the factory will do for the 2002s. Most of us used the factory Tundra fog lamp switch and mounted it in the spare factory switch location next to the power rear window switch.
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
Well if it goes away when warmed up it sounds to me like its the typical problem with oil flow up to the valves when cold. This is not uncommon for many engines. Has anyone tried going to synthetic oil to cure this--it has much better flow characteristics while cold. The engine should be broken in first (probably 3000-6000 miles) with regular oil before the switch.
