Has anyone heard whether or not Toyota is going to make a Lexus version when the new Sequoia comes out?
  • 714cut714cut Member Posts: 355
My dealer just told me that for next year the 4.7 engine will have 288 h.p and 330 ft/lbs of torque.
There is no word on the larger engine but he is going to Japan soon where there will be some big announcements.
He feels the focus will be on hybrids not larger engines. The hybrids give more performance, great torque and of course better fuel economy. Supposedly there will be 5 or 6 new hybrids in the next 24 months.
  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
There is talk of a 5.4L engine. Maybe for the Lexus VX based on the Sequoia platform ? A 288hp/330Ibft doesn't sound right to me. The current 4.7 already pulls 320Ibft, so a tweak to wring out additional 48hp and 10Ibft of torque just won't cut it, IMO. I think your second point is quite right wrt hybrids.

Hybrids are coming to the Toyota Camry by 2006, ditto for the Sequoia and Tundra, so I heard. BUT, the Camry and Sequoia will be due for a redesign by MY2006 (the latter was released in Oct 2000), so maybe expect an engine change or a hybrid version by that time for these two vehicles.

BTW, did you purchase another Seq ?
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
I'm betting that Toyota is letting the stellar sales rate of the Prius lead them astray. Many of us have bought the Prius more for the technology and "greenest" rather than power.

I suspect that NO ONE in our "green" class will be at all interested in a new HP race using this technology. For myself, I was considering, seriously, purchasing a hybrid RX on the assumption that the I4 would be used.

    Not any more.

Maybe the HL version will use the I4....

How much of a discount should I expect on a new 2wd Seqouia SR5, generally? Typically a domestic buyer, I've been used to the whole rebate thing for years but am starting to think it's time for a higher quality vehicle, even if the price is higher.

I'd probably be looking at a 2wd SR5 with Package #2, stickering at just over $35k. How close to $30k should I be able to get? How hard is it to find a 2wd SR5 in the Delaware/Maryland/Virginia area?

I am about to return my 2000 Sequoia after 3 years of Bliss. My kids have been pretty tuff on the car and I am concerned that I will get hammered by Toyota Leasing when I hand the keys over. Any past experience or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Check in Lease Termination Fees and other costs too.

And Car_Man has answered a lot of wear and tear questions over in Lease Questions - Ask Here (try a Search This Discussion in there).

Is it just real dirty in and out or dented exterior and torn interior? A good detail shop can do wonders for $150. I saw way back on some of your posts your in a suburb of NYC. Where? I know an excellent detail shop in Farmingdale on Long Island. I saw them take a SERIOUSLY BEAT, FILTHY RX300 and make it look brand new where the dealer put it right on his "off lease" used car lot.

My '01 had the brake TSB done at around 12K miles and now at 36K miles I'm having the dreaded "shudder" when I brake at higher speeds...sounds like the rotors again. I'm about to call for an appt. Is this just the way it is with these big beasts or should I expect better?? Thanks for any advice before I bring it in.
  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
That's the way with these big beasts, unfortunately. To help with the lifetime of the rotors and pads, just apply brakes way early, and gently too. I live in some hilly areas, and my brake wear is just unbelievable. Two brake pad changes and one machined rotor service in only 52K miles.

    Hope this helps

I'm a few miles short of 70K miles on my 2001 Sequoia. Had it in the Toyota dealer for inspection and replacement of all fluids incl diffs. Well got the call -the exhaust manifolds were leaking and that most likely they were cracked. Est for repair -$1650. Although I put a lot of miles on, I did get the brake TSB done right at 36K, but had to pay for 1/2 of the air conditioning compressor fix (big $$) as I was out of warranty when the compresor went kaput. Also I have the rear door latch "fixed" for the third time. Having had to replace the front and rear diff on two previous LCs, I finally might be reaching my breaking point with Toyotas.

Any other high mileage Sequoia's - what else do we have to look forward to.

Is it normal to need to replace the brakes at 30K miles? My Honda is past 55K and brakes are still good.
  • freddieenginefreddieengine Member Posts: 5
I have an '03 SR5, 4WD and have the same problem with squeaky sunroof. Look back at the posts on the last page.
Have taken it in 3 times already but everytime they say they adjusted this and tightened that, but the squeak is still there. It is temperature related as it does not do it in hot weather.
I now have even less confidence in the dealers than I did before.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
What Honda are you comparing to? Remember, you're talking about a 5500 pound vehicle. 30K miles is pretty normal if not even a bit high.
  • kennynmdkennynmd Member Posts: 424
long time no hear...anyways since you are at a toyota dealership, do you know of the squeaking sunroof problem on the Sequoia. I took it to the dealer once but the problem vanished when I got there. It started back recently but only when its cool, like freediengine said, i think its weaher related. Is there any way you can ask the service guys at your dealership if they heard the problem. Thanks

Doing Scions now? How's that going?

  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I don't know a thing about the roof issue. I'll let you know if I do hear something, but that hasn't been something I've followed for the last few years.

Yes, I'm back in sales and have taken over the Scion sales at my dealership. Its going fairly well, but I need more xB cars and fewer xA's. Its a heck of a challenge for a truck nut like myself, but I've actually taken to them nicely. I'm driving an xA demo and genuinely love it.

I'm a new member and I am looking for some advice. I am British and live and work in the middle east. I really like the Sequoia but unfortunately it isn't available here. I wish to buy one and have it shipped over. I've never done this so is there anyone out there who can advise me on how I should go about it. Does anyone one know any dealers who specialize in this.
    Thanks
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
A US dealer would be in violation of its dealer agreements to sell it to you. There are some strange covenants surrounding vehicles being sent overseas. If we know or should know they are being sold for export, we must stop the deal. The only exception to this is if we are selling to a US State Department employee who will be stationed at an overseas embassy.

There are ways the dealer can get caught doing this. If a vehicle is sold but no registration is ever recorded, they notice. If the vehicle ends up at Toyota of Baghdad in need of a new seat heater, they notice. The selling dealer will loose allocated units when they figure it out.

As to the reason this is done, I can't give you a complete answer. I think it has to do with the the make-up of the company. If a Sequoia is sold by Toyota Motor Sales US to a customer who should belong to Toyota Europe, the Europe guys get a bit miffed. Obviously nobody is going to miss a few sales here and there, but its the larger principle that matters. Again, this is part is just my guess.
  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
I suppose arp1 can just buy the truck here and contract a shipper to ship it to wherever he wants, right ? Or can the govt stop him from doing this ?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
If you title it, which means registering it and paying state taxes, and you don't outright tell the dealer what your plans are, and nobody gets in trouble. This isn't a legal issue but a corporate policy.
  • kennynmdkennynmd Member Posts: 424
It squeak is here and there. Most of the time I don't here it because the stereo is up high enoigh to not hear it. But every so often, I have my wife and son in the truck, and I hear the noise it is really annoying.

2002 sequoia 15k miles ...oil changes every 2500miles or 4 mos. ....had drivetrain greased each time ... BAD THUMP .... jerks neck .... also Brakes grab at end of brake and pulsate .....LEXUS has same problems with gx 470 LEXUS HAS TSB.. FEILD REP for TOYOTA SAY TRUCK IS NORMAL for TOYOTA.. ANY SUGGESTIONS???
  • robertrobert Member Posts: 14
Anyone know of Toyota's plans (ie what MY ) for the Sequoia's redesign?
  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
2006 or 2007. May even come with a hybrid engine option by MY 2007. The Lexus version (VX) is also scheduled for release about MY 2007.

    Hope this helps.
  • tooheeldrivetooheeldrive Member Posts: 17
This board is too quiet so I'll jump in. I too have the "thump" from the drivetrain. It happens only occasionally and usually after stopping hard. It doesn't really bother me and it doesn't jerk my neck. If you have a 4WD model, try running in 4WD now and then to loosen up the drive train a bit. Thumping is a common issue with 4WD vehicles... Many GM 4WD owners complain of the same thing. You might have the dealer drop the driveshaft and check the spines on the yolk for wear or burrs. As for the brakes... I have not a clue, as far as I can recall, your symptom of grabbing and pulsating coming to a stop is the first here. There have been a few complaints of warped rotors and brakes not lasting as long a they "should" but that is it. Toyota, changed the caliper design for '03 that reduced rotors warping. Note that warped rotors and brakes wearing out more quickly than a passenger car is common to ALL SUV's. SUV's are heavy and so are very hard on brakes, especially when driven hard.

Let us know when the dealer gets you sorted out.

    2HD.
  • sequoiasoonsequoiasoon Member Posts: 223
Read back on posts or search, the thump is common and VERY easily fixed. A lot of grease into the grease fitting on slip joint for the driveshaft cures it. Did mine 10K ago hasn't thumped since.
  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
Was just about to start yawning again due to the quietness of this board before 2HD jumped in. Geez. Is the Sequoia that good or we are just too fed up with it and wish to trade it in ? My 2001 SR5 2WD purrs on like a kitten. No problem to report, now with 52K miles, purchased Dec 2000.
  • petro33petro33 Member Posts: 192
I noticed the lack of posts as well. I posted a while ago about the paint pealing on the roof rack. Has anyone else noticed this? I also have developed a rattle in the drivers side by the insturment cluster that only my wife can hear (getting old is hell).

I still love this car, it has meet all my expectations! I would get another to replace it when the time comes.....
  • raddboy41raddboy41 Member Posts: 249
Again, look back a few pages here and you'll find the TSB for the "Big Brake" upgrade. Bigger calipers and pads all on Toyota's dime if you're within 3/36,000 warrantee.
  • petro33petro33 Member Posts: 192
I did the TSB at 37K and now have 68K on the vehicle. The brakes needed changing at 50K so I am about due again. What are others getting on the new brakes and calipers????
  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
Did my brake upgrade at 25K miles. Now with 52K miles, I haven't noticed it needing a new set of pads. On my next oil change (at 54K miles) I'll have them check out the brakes and pads.

68K miles on your '01 ? Yikes. You do use the truck. I wonder who has the highest mileage on their Sequoia ???

Has anyone put a sensor/beeper on their Sequoia? I am interested in having a system installed so that when the Seq. is put into reverse it will beep as a warning for people around it. Any feedback will be great. Thanks
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
I don't disagree that these are a good idea but please remember that you're still at fault if you hit something/somebody while backing.
  • pschreckpschreck Member Posts: 524
I've seen a replacement reverse light bulb in J.C. Whitney's catalog. You just replace the bulb with the bulb/beeper unit. I don't know if it's junk or not though.
  • tdo123tdo123 Member Posts: 102
The benefit to the backup is not only to warn those around you, but as the driver to alert you altogether if something is around. I have the factory installed Park Distance Control on my LS and it is the greatest. I think all SUV's should have it because they are so big and you just never know.

Beeping breaklights will not alert you to a bike hidden behind the car or a child hiding. It also is a tremendous help while parallel parking. I can fit in spots that I might have passed on previously.

For all else, the one best benefit now my wife has another helper while driving to keep from hitting something. :)

I have seen the posts regarding a drone problem with the 03 Sequoias (mine is a 2WD with 22k miles). The last post on this subject was in August of 03.

Was there ever an official Toyota solution to this problem?

Thanks, and Happy Independence Day to all.
  • branch15_5branch15_5 Member Posts: 44
I'm beginning to wonder if I have a tire problem rather than some sort tranny drone. The noise starts at 20 mph, continues to 70 mph, and the pitch goes up the faster I go.

For those that have had the drone problem, does the pitch change with speed?

I have Bridgestone Desert Dueler H/Ts with about 3,000 miles on them.

Hello, I just need some honest oppinion on owners of Sequoia SR5 4X4. any good or bad experience w/ this SUV? it seems it has a flaw too like the Armada on those early models. did Toyota fix those things? me and my wife are still deciding on this 2 SUV. also considering Siena LE AWD. will be posting on Siena site too. lots of thanks
  • slackersslackers Member Posts: 77
Have an '03 Limited with 21K miles on it. Only flaw was need to replace drivers leather seat cover as stitching was coming loose. Covered under warranty... otherwise flawless vehicle. Toyota fixed the brake and air conditioning problems prior to '03. Superb vehicle.

Any idea when the 2005's will be coming out? I am considering a Sequoia or a Nissan Armada. Since I won't buy a first model year Armada, why not compare to 2005 Sequoia? Any help is appreciated.
  • 514329514329 Member Posts: 60
yeah man, we are in the same situation cause I'm ready to get one but still undecided w/c of this.
  • sequoiasoonsequoiasoon Member Posts: 223
'05 will be at dealers in September. From a different site and dealers with real good info- Changes are variable valve timing for engine will give a little more HP and TQ. 5 speed auto tranny like the 4 runner and Lexus. Small dash changes and I believe nav is an option. The more major redesign will be for '06.

Love my '03 only issue has been the oil pressure sending/receiving unit 14k currently. The look of the Armada doesn't appeal to me somewhere between the rounded back doors and straight roof, the rear door handles my kids could never reach and the actual grill bumper layout. Many rattle complaints as well as brakes and a couple other concerns/problems that plague MANY first year models (including Sequoia the first year or two). The Armada does have more HP and TQ as well as better towing and the flat folding third row is definite bonus!

If you do not need the towing capacity or off road ability the Sienna AWD is an excellent choice. You get more room, flat folding third row, much better MPG, and a lot of highly praised features for a lot less money! Many people hate the instant middle age, soccer mom, lack of sporty appeal image that comes with the Minivan. The in check with reality, mid 30's, saving $ on initial cost and gas, my 4 year old starts soccer in September, waistline not as sporty as it used to be, part of me says a Sienna is a strong contender to replace my Corolla if it ever dies.

Towing a boat and travel trailer, hunting on friends property, beach part of me still needs a V8 with good off road ability. Sequoia or something like it will still be a necesity but 50 mile rush hour round trip, sit in the parking lot all day, definitely calls for the reality $$ as a second vehicle
  • bp3959bp3959 Member Posts: 156
A fold flat third row is something that would really complete the Sequoia, though I can't imagine how they would accomplish this without sacrificing something else. Any idea what we can expect in the '06 major redesign you speak of?
  • 514329514329 Member Posts: 60
I just test drove an XLE AWD Siena a while ago and me and my wife loved it but at $1000.00 over invoice ($32887.00) and the SR5 loaded for $36700.00, I'll think hard about it against an SE Armada 4X4 w/ tow package for $34604.00 - $1500.00 rebate.

    2005 Sequoia changes:

    Colors:
Limiteds now come in arctic frost pearl (a pearl white), regular white, phantom gray, black, silver sky, desert sand (yay! A gold color finally!) and the all new bluesteel, probably a grayish blue metallic. We lost the green for good.
SR5's now come regular white, phantom gray, black, silver sky, desert sand, and the all new bluesteel, probably a grayish blue metallic. We lost the green, red, and other blue (blue marlin) for good.

The interior gray (11) is the same, but the tan color interior is now a taupe color, rather than a beige brown.

The Sequoia remains an 8-passenger, but there is a LUXURY package option on a Limited that means the car can be a 7-passenger, like the Lincoln Navigator, with center rear-seat buckets rather than a bench in the middle. Navigation system will be available (in dash) with a JBL 10-speaker audio system. There will be an available rear air suspension.

As for looks, the rear and the front are redesigned slightly, and the entire car will be fully color-keyed, with grille, bumpers, overfenders and all mouldings matching. The BIG news is the new 282 HP motor, with 325 FT Lbs torque... and an new 5ECT (5-spd automatic tranny), and all cars (including the SR5's) will have overfenders rather than SR5's being able to have chrome wheel arch mouldings. All cars get an in-glass antenna, and gas mileage improves greatly: city = 16, highway to 22.
    There are 2 new packages:
SR5 Sport Package = new styled 16" alloy wheels, tubular running boards, adjustable rear air suspension, fog lamps, front skid plate and a JBL audio upgrade.
Limited Luxury Package = New wood appearance dash/interior garnish, 7-seat config. with 2nd row bucket seating w/ center 2nd row removeable console, optitron gauges, memory seats/mirror and the adjustable rear air suspension.
NAV system is available on all models. And, one safety item change is that the 2nd row side curtain airbags is coverage with the roll-over sensor.
