mosf15, you said you drove your new 2001 LE to St. Louis from Canada, I am also from St. Louis, how long of a drive was it?

You saved just over $4600 from MSRP I assume. I have been quoted locally $31,261 for an LE all mode 4X4 with leather, limited slip, and body side molding. This is $250 under invoice with $500 rebate. Added to the invoice however is a $500 advertising fee, so final price is actually $250 under invoice.

What equipment does your LE have on it? Is it worth going to Canada?
  • brassmanbrassman Member Posts: 1
Is it true that you can get 3.9% APR for 60 months
if you qualify from Nissan? Is there any rebates
going on? Has anybody bought the new All Wheel
    Drive?

Silvergrub,I am also looking for PF LE in St. Louis. That sounds like fair deal except for $500 advertising fee. Is that posted on sticker? If you dont mind me asking, what dealership are you dealing with? Also, are you trading in and if so, are they giving you fair price for your car?

Here's a link to an online reseller for the sportworks racks. You may need to call them to get more detailed info since the site does not have photos of each rack.

The 2" hitch rack fits the class III hitch used on Pathfinders.

Another Town Hall member was just recommending racks from PerformanceBike, so you may want to check there too.

Just bought a 2001 LE,love it, however I have noticed that it sits crooked in the rear.I got out a tape measure and it sits a full 1/2 inch lower on the left side. This may not sound like alot but it is very noticable to me looking at it from the rear. Has any one else noticed this? Bye the way I checked all the tire pressure, its not that.Help before I take to the dealer.

I'm gonna ask 2 silly questions, because I use to notice the same thing about my '97 PF SE sitting in the driveway.

    1) Have you verified the tires are equally inflated?

    2) Is the surface you are looking at the vehicle on level?

In my case, the driveway was indeed sloped away from the house (used a carpenters level to verify) which caused the vehicle to lean.

    Hope this helps,

I've had my 2001 LE for just under a month now...no problems whatsoever until earlier tonight.

I was trying to Eject/Unload a CD from slot 5 and it came up with the error:

    Err 2

It won't let me do anything now on the CD player...I only have Tape & AM/FM stereo until this gets fixed! I have power to the CD player, but no matter what buttons I push it still reads: Err 2

Does anyone know what this error code is? I'll be taking it into my local Nissan dealer tomorrow afternoon to see what they say, but I'd like to fix the problem before hand if at all possible.

    I wasn't using any CD-R's either........

Still love my PF LE though!

    Any suggestions/help for me?

OK, I've only had my new LE for 2 weeks now, but it is consistently getting only 10 miles to the gallon. (same mileage, highway or city, no, I don't have a heavy foot) Does anyone have experience with this? Can I expect the mileage to improve as the motor get broken in?
  • usarmytttusarmyttt Member Posts: 21
Not silly questions, but yes tires are inflated to the same pressure and yes surface is level.I am measuring with tape at the centerline of the wheels to the bottom of the fender flair and am getting a full half inch in front and back. There also is nothing in the vehicles cargo area that would make it lean.
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
W/O checking tire pressures, garage level, etc. I've just measured mine and found it to be about 1/4" lower on the driver's side. It's not noticable. The only thing I can think of is that no vehicle would be perfectly balanced left to right. Just the steering column, dash, pedals, and related stuff on the driver's side would probably tip the scales slightly to that side. Come to think of it, with the exhaust exiting on the passenger side rear, the gas tank would be biased slightly towards the driver's side wouldn't it?

Thanks Meca2 for the scanned bulletin from Nissan. The pictures are a bit unclear but are workable. The stock hitch wire harness has to be modified to be installed into the 01 PF. It's not really a modification your just taking out some wires out of the corrigated sleeve. I modified the wire harness with no problem but I can't figure out where to route the wires from the outside in. The bulletin says to remove a grommet from the left side of the vehicle and cut a 1in cross to put the wires through. I spent 3 hours looking for this damn grommet and can't find the thing. The closest I can find is a grommet that already has wires going through it that go up near the amp for the stereo. Is this the correct one??? Can somebody look to see where their traler wire harness is routed into the vehicle.I can provide pictures if that can help.
    Thanks again group!!!

This is the best deal I have found around St. Louis, it is with Bommarito Nissan. Go to their web site and contact the internet salesman.

No, the advertising fee is not reflected on the window sticker but is added to their invoice. I found this to be true with all 5 Nissan dealers in the St. Louis area.

This price was offered with no trade in. They are also offering 3.9% financing for 60 mos. if interested.

    Mike,
My CD player locked up just like yours. Same ERR 2 message. It must mean: "I'm jammed and get used to your radio again because it may take 6 wks to get a new changer". I even took my changer out completely to see if I could break the Cd's out. Once I got the changer out, (which was actually easy), I didn't have the guts to disassemble the changer. It had too many tiny springs and screws to lose. They had to change my changer for a new one and send the broken one to Clarion to free my CDs which were then sent back to me. Hope you have some good stations.

    Donszj,
That is atrocious mileage even for this vehicle. I tend to drive aggressively and have never gotten less than 15.7mpg. Typically get 16-17mpg. LE 4x4 2001. I assume yours is a AWD. Could it be locked in 4wd all of the time? You aren't working for Ringling Bros and towing an elephant or two are you? BTW how do you figure your mileage?

Thanks for the info on the CD player. I'll take it in today and see what my dealer says. 6 weeks! OUCH! I hope I can hold out until it's fixed!

    Thanks again

    Hey guys,

I'm in columbia MO and also looking to buy a PF within the next year, hopefully this summer. I talked to a guy from capitol city nissan (Jeff City), and he said that, as an autobytel client, he has to sell any PF on their lot at invoice to autobytel customers. If he has to get one from anywhere in the state, its like $100 over invoice. If he has to get one from out of state, its $500 over invoice.

I'm sure you boys have autobytel dealers in St. Louis. Fill out the autobytel thing online and get in touch with one of them. Even if you don't want to buy from them, you can use their offer as a valuable haggling tool with Bommarito.

    Hope this helps.

I leave my LE in the Auto4WD all the time. I would like to know if I should change it to 4H when it is snowing or just leave it in Auto4WD.

Will someone be kind enough to explain the difference between the two systems?
Also if you have slip differential, will it work on 4H?
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
limited slip diff is always working regardless of transfer case setting

If you leave it in auto4wd, no problem. I prefer to put it in 2wd when conditions are very dry and expected to stay that way for a long time (my thinking is it will cause less wear and tear on the system over the long run, although I have no evidence that it's a serious concern). If the amount of snow is light to moderate, keep it in auto4wd. If you are in very loose conditions (very deep snow, gravel, sand, etc.) 4Hi, which is the part time 4wd setting, is preferable as there is no "reaction time" or differential wheel speed involved. You will have 50/50 torque split immediately (more stable, slightly better traction). I've tested both modes under difficult conditions (offroad and deep snow) and the difference is noticeable (although the auto4wd mode certainly would have pulled it off). IMHO, there shouldn't be too many times in a year that the 4Hi setting is required for most of us. Hope this helps.

    great forum!
I am in the market for a new pathfinder LE 4x4, just wanted some clarification on the limited slip differential, b/c there seems to be some lack of clarity on whether this is an option or not. If its optional, what would be the benefits of having it?
    Thanks in advance

    silvergrub and rman2,
In case mosf15 isn't around right now maybe I can fill you in a little more. He bought from the same dealer in Canada that I did. He figured his savings over the best price he could find at the time, NOT list price. Right now an LE AWD with leather, LSD, mats and a few more goodies can be had in Canada for about $28,500 total. List price for this vehicle in the US is $34,646 and invoice is $31,438. The Candian price is just a little higher than a month ago because the exchange rate has slipped slightly. But don't forget you also save another couple hundred more on state tax because you paid less for the vehicle.

rman2 - I actually bought an SE with manual trans. This dealer had no problem finding one for me exactly as I wanted. Brand new right off the boat. An SE 4WD manual trans with sunroof, LSD, and mats is now about $24,600 total in Canada. I love it. Absolutly no problems in over 10,000 miles.

As far as "is it worth it to go to Canada". I think it was. And I know of at least 20 others who have followed. The easiest car purchase I ever made. Write me for the details and contacts. I'll be glad to help out.

    -Jon

Last fall I think I noticed slightly poorer mileage when in Auto 4WD compared to 2WD. There are so many variables, I'll have to continue to watch this before I'm conviced one way or the other. Whenever I buy fuel, I fill it up to cutoff, and record the fuel used, the mileage, and the mileage travelled since last filled. Use that to calculate fuel economy (the Canadian Govt. gives away an economy calculator - cardboard slide rule and the Alberta govt. participates in this program). We use litres per 100 km in Canada (though the calculator also does MPG but I'm pretty sure it's Canadian gallons).

Anyway, because I'm cheap, I plan to travel in 2WD on bare pavement (late Spring, Summer, and early Fall). Otherwise, I leave it in Auto 4WD as it is safer if you hit an unanticipated patch of "black ice" or even oil or sand/fine gravel on the road.
  • ssbfssbf Member Posts: 15
How about freezing rain/icy roads? Auto4WD or 4H under those conditions?

When I used to have the part-time 4WD I know when to engage the 4WD but with this Auto4WD thing you have a couple more possiblities.
  • smithmdsmithmd Member Posts: 167
10 mpg is awful. You should be getting around 15 or better...some people say they get up to and slightly over 20 mpg. If you're towing something, 10 mpg is realistic, but not in everyday driving. Check your tire pressure (although this alone shouldn't cause that much of a difference). There is some debate as to what pressure should be run, but the book recommends at least 26. I run 35 in the front and 28 in the rear. 35 all the way around would give better gas mileage. Other problems could include a dragging brake or a huge alignment problem... The list could go on. Of course, make sure you're figuring your gas mileage the right way before you look into all of this other stuff.

Miles since last fill-up divided by gallons used (not the overall size of the tank).

    miles/gallons

    Good luck!
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
...but under those conditions, I would personally still stick to auto4wd. The only situations I ever found 4Hi useful was in very deep snow, offroad (ruts, mud, etc), and climbing a steep ice-covered hill where traction was extremely limited AND forward speed was very slow, less than say 10 kph. Again, auto4wd would have worked just fine in those situations, 4Hi just worked a bit better. IMHO, auto4wd should be reducing your decision making...I know it has for me compared to the part-time system on my 99.5 LE.

I have asked about a problem with a vibration on this board and continue to get the same response. I have had it in the shop 7 times now and still cannot get the problem with the vibration resolved. The dealer has done the forced balancing, new tires, new rack-n-pinion and numerous front end adjustments. I am very disappointed in this vehicle because of the vibration. Had I known of this problem when I purchased the vehicle I would have passed. I knew it was there on the test drive but just thought it was a balance problem.
I am considering filing a lemon law claim. Has anyone had success getting a replacement vehicle due to this problem?
  • pathstarpathstar Member Posts: 201
I'm curious to know if anyone had the shimmy problem with Dunlop "Grandtrek" tires, or if it was just with the Bridgestones? Is this part of the same problem people are having with the Fords with tires failing? John, do you have Bridgestones? If so, that could be your problem.

Well, I brought the 01 LE, the Yakima rack, the cargo organizer, the all weather mats, the diamond snow chains, and Zaino'ed it last weekend. I know I need to stop but I was watching an infomercial on AutoLock- a "The Club" kind of thing that attaches to the brake pedal. Anyone have any thoughts on this thing. The infomercial said I gotta have it because the bad guys can beat the chip security by buying it.
  • pathstarpathstar Member Posts: 201
Cover the VIN tag on the dash with a piece of electrical tape. Then the bad guys can't get a key unless they have help at the dealership. It's unlikely a "casual" thief would buy a key anyway, as they cost close to $70. You will not stop the professionals no matter what you do. If they want your vehicle they will take it. That's what insurance is for. I find it hard to believe the professionals would bother with a US $30,000 SUV at any rate.

Here's a tip. To avoid damage from thieves make sure not to leave cameras, radar detectors, etc. in view when you leave the vehicle parked. They will smash a side window ($200-500) to get a $50 item. Pretty stupid, but that's what a thief is.
  • johnpurdumjohnpurdum Member Posts: 3
The original tires were Toyo After 5000 miles they put Michelin LTX MS tires on the vehicle. I have a strong feeling that the problem is in the transmission. I am not an expert but it seems that everything else has been ruled out.

    Bent driveshaft?
  • peaches5peaches5 Member Posts: 91
I have a 2000 LE that "tilts" also. Friends have even mentioned it :(

10 mpg is AWFUL. I have a very heavy foot and do almost all stop and go driving and the very worst I've had is 15 mpg.

I don't have the CD changer, just a regular CD player, but there were comments a few months ago where this problem with the CD players was happening with homemade CD's. If you're using homemade and they're getting jammed, check the archives - I *think* there was one brand that worked better than another.

Shimmy - I also have the shimmy problem and the crooked steering wheel. After 3 alignments, balancing, rotating, etc., my tires are wearing unevenly. I'm in the process of starting the Lemon Law arbitration.

HOWEVER, I had a little accident the other day and dented my back bumper. Has anyone had this replaced yet? If so, what kind of $$$'s am I looking at? I doubt it will be enough to warrant having the insurance company take care of it, but I want to make sure :)

    JOHNPURDUM,
Here's an article abt vibration from the Driveshaft Shop.

-Most people have trouble determining if the vibration in there vehicle is coming from the DRIVESHAFT or not.
There are typically two type's of vibration most vehicle's would have.A fast cycle vibration or a slow cycle vibration. To help understand this lets say we put a bucket of water on the passengers floor. If the vibration in the vehicle produces small ripples on the top of the water this would be considered a fast cycle vibration. This type of vibration is usually a drive train vibration, things like the driveshaft, motor or torque converter. If the vibration kind of puts waves on the top of the water. This type of vibration is a slow cycle vibration and usually is a axle or tire vibration.

    Hope this helps. AW

I know what brake lock your talking about. Its called a brake club or something. From what I've heard, its the better than a regular club, although its not in plain sight like the club is. Basically, the car won't start withouh pushing the brake down. This thing keeps the brake from being depressed.

I saw a show on discover channel about auto theft, and they said this thing was a must. I thought it was weird because I hadn't heard of it before then.

    I think you're talking about this? http://www.unbreakable.com

Actually, one can get around the transmission shift lever/brake pedal interlock. Most vehicles have buttons that allow one to override the interlocks if there are problems. Of course, they don't tell you this in the commercial. They simply show that the shift lever cannot be shifted out of Park without the brake pedal being depressed first.

That said, this device does look promising though. However, one thing that I like abou the steering wheel club is that it prevents someone from smashing the window and easily ripping out the airbag module.

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Replacement airbags are spendy, and dishonest mechanics will buy stolen ones to increase their profit if replacements are needed for a customer. But can't you easily hacksaw through most new steering wheels and slip the club off? (starting to sound like Crime 101 in here)

Went into my dealer today to have my jammed up 6 Disc changer (In-Dash) looked at found out that I'll have to order a new one indeed. I left the dealership around 4:30 PM and by the time I had made a few other stops and then returned home, there was a message left on my voice mail from the guy who worked with me at the dealership today. He didn't say much, but by his demeanor and tone of voice things don't look good.

I'll bet anything that he's going to tell me that they can't get the cd player from Nissan now, for some reason or another. That's the only thing I can think anyway? Hope I'm wrong! Maybe I'm just fearing the worst. Sandandton, how long ago did you have your changer replaced? Did they replace just the changer or the entire head unit?

I've been toying with adding a DVD player or a Navigation system of some kind, maybe this will drive me over the edge:)

Guess I'll find out in the morning......

I have a question also: Does anyone who owns a 2001 LE happen to have a Brush/Grill Guard on theirs? If you have any pictures of this, please email me at: bunting44@hotmail.com

I want one but I have yet to see one on an LE, I have seen plenty on the SE's though, and it looks sharp....but I'm worried that one on the LE might make it look more like an SE...which isn't bad at all....but it's not what I want either. My dealer had a WAAG Guard for the PF and wanted $525. Anyone else have suggestions for me? Any web sites with pictures of an LE with a guard on it? Please advise if you can!

    Thanks in advance fellas!
  • usarmytttusarmyttt Member Posts: 21
about the tilt, did you take it to the dealer? If so what did they say? I am thinking the dealer is going to say something like "its not that bad",but to me I can't stop noticing it.

I had this problem with another Nissan Product - my '97 I30. It was in the shop for over 30 days while they worked on correcting the problem (of course with Infiniti I had a brand new I30 while they worked on mine...). They adjusted my struts and I thinkg they even replaced parts of the suspension (coil springs that DID NOT MATCH). They showed me the two back springs - one way almost an inch taller than the other. This also caused the car to pull.
BUT, they finally did get it level . One line they fed me early on was that the drivers side was supposed to sit a bit higher - to compensate for when someone is sitting in the vehicle. Sounds logical - but holds no water! Stay on the dealer until YOU ARE HAPPY. The squeaky wheel DOES get the oil! Don't give up - Good luck!

PS - my 01 Pathfinder is doing great - sits level and does not seem to have this shimmy - and is getting almost 18 MPG. Try premium fuel like is recommended....
  • meca2meca2 Member Posts: 284
pathstar: I have the Dunlops Grandtreck with no shimmy. Almost 3000mi. One time on my old 510 I removed the driveline and took it to a drive line shop and had it trued and balanced. I don't know if anyone would take a driveline off a new 30K PF and take it to a shop to have it checked??
aspenwhite: If someone does raise their car on jackstand I hope, they raise BOTH rear wheels if they have LSD!!

my wife and i just bought a 01 LE AWD with leather, LSD, etc etc--everything except the NAV system and entertainment options--

I love it but it is her car and she is now convinced it is too big and she doesn't like driving around town--

Any idea how much of a hit we would take on trading it in--it has less than 500 miles on it.

    Thanks
  • sanandtonsanandton Member Posts: 342
Had mine replaced in nov. I believe. The changer and head unit are separate units. I would have no problems changing it myself if I had one in hand. The problem is getting the units.
Your late call may be very much like my late call was. They called to tell me that I would be held responsible for the cost of replacement if it was determined that my home made Cds caused the freeze. I'm sure I don't have to tell you guys what my reply was. After that point, nothing more was mentioned about me paying for anything and it was replaced. The spot that the changer fills would be a great place to put a DVD/Nav unit with one of those retractible screens.

I got rubbed up against on the side of my'00 Mahogany Pearl LE. There was no damage to the buddy but both moldings above the two driver side wheels were gashed and scraped. They need to be replaced. They are NOT part of the body and look like they are easily replaced except for the fact that the pieces might not come painted. Has anyone out there replaced these parts and what was there experience. A Body shop wants to charge me 550. Please respond on this board of email me at pcrowles@hotmail.com

My call from the dealer was just to tell me that the unit was on backorder.....he estimated 2 weeks, but I'll bet it will be a little longer.

Another guy I talked to who works at the dealership, told me that the same error message came on his cd player when he owned a 2001 LE also. he had to send in for a replacement in December as well. He also told me he had since wrecked his PF, and now owns a Xterra.

I believe that they are actually colored plastic, not painted at all.
At least the ones I put on our '01 Sierra Siver were that way.

oops, that is the door moldings not the wheel arches.

has anyone noticed that the back brakes smell like burning rubber?? I have brought it back twice to the dealer and they can't find anything wrong. this last time they said there was a lot of brake dust and they cleaned it. still have the smell. if anyone is having this problem please let me know what you had done to resolve this. by the way I have a 1999 DE Limited pathfinder.

    pcrowles,

I think the fender flares for 99.5 and up are color moulded. You don't need to replace the whole flare. The mud guard, arch are sold separate, but they're kinda expensive.

You need to tell them exactly what it is that you want. It's best to have the truck there for them to see. They had to reorder my 99 flares because I didn't have to truck there to show them the parts.

    Good luck

I was getting ~ 13mpg in my 2wd LE. I have about 3200 miles on mine now and it's getting about 15mpg. Be patient, some engines are tighter than others.

Someone, admittedly a while ago, mentioned smelling like gasoline after getting out of their Pathy. I have noticed a strong smell on my left hand. The other thing I have noticed is that, while driving, my left hand is in front of the air vent. Anyone else noticed it? I know this sounds bad, but tomorrow, after driving to work, could all volunteers smell your left hand (assuming you use the auto climate control) for gasoline? Has anyone approached a dealer about this and had it fixed? By the way, I have an LE with Nav.
