Is there a reason for the lack of availability - are there unexpected bugs? I thought it was a neat idea and something I'd be very interested in having if I were to step up to a JGC.

Will there be an Overland trim level in future?
  • tloke1tloke1 Member Posts: 185
The Overland model will be reintroduced for 2006, coming out this fall. WKJeeps.com first broke the news back in February if I remember right. Here's a link with all the features: http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_overland.htm

I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0 L engine and 50,000 miles. I am having problems with it stalling. I thought it was a vacuum leak and did find one connection that I thought was loose. I repaired it and I cleaned the CCV and it ran fine for two days. Just now it started again. The idle speed will fall until the engine quits. It restarts crank and then slowly falls off and quits. If you give it just a little gas it stays running. Can anyone help?

Does anyone know why sometimes the two turn signals blink at the same time, and some times they alternate?

I have found the same problem with my grand cherokee. It takes a while to start it. I got the fuel pressure checked, and that seemed to be the problem. They want me to replace everything, which would cost over $900. Do I just need to get the check valve replaced, or the whole thing? Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Hello everyone..I'm a new Jeep owner. I just bought a used 1998 JGC Laredo with 80,000 miles. I've had it for about two days now and I've noticed a few things which I'm not sure are normal or not, since I've never owned one before. The first thing I noticed is after I turn the car off, I hear a dripping noise in the engine area. It sounds like water or something is dripping and sort of has a "scorching" sound. It only goes on for about one minute and I haven't seen any puddles under the car. However, I did notice what looked to be a clear liquid dripping for the passenger side body frame. I thought the dripping might have been from having the AC on or something, but it occurs even when the AC is off for the whole ride. Another thing I noticed is I can hear the gas sloshing around in the tank when I stop. I assume it isn't anything major, but just checking. Before I bought the car, the shop turned the roters, so I assume I'll have to get them fixed in another year. Anything else I should look out for in a 1998 JGC? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance..

I have another question that someone may be able to answer. Is there a way I can set my horn to honk when I lock my doors with the remote keyless entry. I know in the book for the security system it says about calling a certified Jeep Dealer, but is it possible to do this myself. The only thing it does now is makes the locking noise, but I would like it to make a more audible sound so I know when the doors lock for sure.

    Thanks
  • erickplerickpl Member Posts: 2,735
My 2000 GC could set that from the overhead console. I set it to flash... I hate the horn noise esp when I get home late at night. Flashing lights are less obtrusive, but still easily visible.

    Good luck!

    Wish me Luck.

My 1995 jeep grand cherokee 4x4 V6 with automatic transmission runs great but twice recently it would not shift out of first gear making it very difficult to drive. I don't think it is the transmission. It probably has something to do with the vacuum system and sensors. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is this a common problem? The car has 150K miles on it. The car returns to normal if allowed to set for a while. Shifting manually into first gear doesn't help. Does the problem have to be occuring when I take it to get it fixed for them to find it? Is there anything I can do to help diagnose the problem? :confuse:

I have a 1996 JGC 2 wheel drive model with the straight 6 engine. I bought it in 1998 with 25K miles on it. I now have 171K miles on it and have not had any mechanical problems with it except for normal wear and tear replacement parts. When I first brought our JGC home I too noticed the sound and the water dripping off the engine that you mentioned. Since it was still under the manufacture's warranty I took it the local dealer. He asked me if I had been using the defroster. I said I had been. He then stated the sound was coming the AC unit and the water was just condensation caused by the AC. The JGC defroster system uses the AC as a dehumidifier. He proved it me by running the engine and cycling the defroster on and off. Every time the AC pulley would engage and disengage. You may also notice that if you turn off the defroster while the engine is running the AC symbol will appear next to the AC control and it will go out by pushing the AC off button. The final test was I drove it with the defroster on and when I parked it the sound and dripping was there. I drove back home with the defroster off and when I got out our JGC was quiet and no dripping. I do not know if Jeep changed the defroster system between your 98 and our 96 but it is the same production model (ZJ). I hope this helpful to you.
  • biogradstubiogradstu Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the reply. Mine does it even after normal driving without anything on (defroster, AC, fan, etc.). The dripping lasts for a couple of minutes and stops. The jeep runs alright, and I haven't noticed any fluids being low, so hopefully it is nothing major. It could be something inside of the engine, but I'm not too "engine smart" so I wouldn't know where to start looking. I also want to mention that I haven't smelled anything weird in the engine area. I think if oil or transmission fluid was dripping, it would smell.

AT 150K miles should the EGR system be cleaned? Is carbon buildup a problem with the jeeps?

I bought a 93' JGC on the last month in Budapest but I do not have an owners manual in english version. The former owner had a copy of manual only german. I need to find a JGC owner or other assessibility Who has a copy of it. I do not mention that I live in Hungary. In this country I do not find an official dealer at the moment. Naturally that after buying I would like to change the oil in the engine, the transmission and the differencial. If it is possible I would like to get an owner or repair manual version in electronical version by known website or to receive by e mail.

:lemon: I just bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. After having a 2002 Laredo for a few years with no problems, I am disappointed with the headrest on the seats of my new Jeep. The headrest pushes forward about an inch or two compared witht my previuos Jeeep turtling your head and causing headaches. It's not my imagination. I am petite and have a tall friend who complained and won't drive with me in my new jeep because of the headrests bothering her neck and back. I have been peaking into SUV's as I see them (a new Mercedes SUV at the mall, the older Jeep model 2002-2004, and other SUV's)and the headrests on other SUV's are straight. There is no back and forth adjustment on the new Jeep, just up and down. I checked with the dealer about getting an old headrest and covering it with the leather that matches my vehicle and was told that every part of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee was redone, including the headrest so I can't replace the headrest poles with a different headrest and poll as they wouldn't fit. Has anyone had this problem and been able to resolve it. Can you ask the manufacturer to take back a vehicle that is causing headaches because of the lack of adjustment and pushing forward of the headrest? I appreciate any help/comments.

I have some question about the 05 JGC with Hemi. How is the handling of JGC with the Hemi? Does the acceleration meet your expectation? Alos how is the NAV and sterero system? Is it a worthwhile option? Can I get the Hemi with that Laredo model (mostly used the JGC on road so may be an all wheel drive is good enough)? thanks.

I purchased an '05 JGC and the ignition switch has been moved off the steering column to a spot right above the right knee bolster. I've already turned off my JGC 3 times by accident. Has anyone else had this problem? Moving the sit further back is not a comfortable solution. Thanks :confuse:
  • paulepaule Member Posts: 382
Have you tried grabbing the headrest and trying to rotate it back?
I'm not sure if the GC headrests are like that or not but they are on other cars. It takes a little bit of oomph but it may be that they are rotated forward and can be adjusted back.

If your worried about issues on repairs then lease the Grand Cherokee Limited for a 3 year lease. This way you are covered under their 3yr/36,000 mile warranty. No repair issues to worry about then! Also, your monthly payment will be cheaper on the lease. I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee and have driven Jeeps since 1996. As far as I am concerned it is the best riding SUV on the road with the highest off-road ratings of any SUV.

Hi everyone, I am in the final stages of purchasing a 2004 JGC Overland. It is at a non Jeep Dealership. It has less than 10,000 miles on it and has an in-service date of Feb 2004. ( when it was originally first sold )

    My questions are:
1.Is there anything I should look out for on this year or model?
2.Do you recommend running the car check for the Vin# meaning will this actually show something if it really happened or is it a waste of $?
    3. I think i should take this car to the local Jeep Dealership to have it inspected, any thoughts on what is most important to look out for? Brakes, Rotors, how do they check the engine?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Bye the way, they are asking a little under $29,000 for it.

    Thanks

Have a 2000 GJC Limited needing its fourth set of front brakes, rotors & pads, calipers said to be ok. Dealer wants $500 plus to replace. I can get new after market rotors and pads, high quality stuff for less than $200 and do work myself. Have replaced pads and rotors on at least a dozen of my vehicles, many different makes and models, over the last 20 years and never had any problems, however, reading all the tech info on the web about lateral runout, variations in new rotor thickness, etc., I am hesitant to do this now. Anybody have experience replacing rotors and pads on GJC's and is it too big a job for a fairly incompetent old fat guy?
  • wlbrown9wlbrown9 Member Posts: 867
Hey... you should have no problems. I did it on our 2000 Laredo when the 5 Star dealership refused to work with me and cost D/C a customer FOREVER. Only issue I had was the real tight bolts holding the calipers on. I ended up getting a 1/2" drive socket set and a long breaker bar....came off pretty hard, but worked out. Get them off and the rotors (at least on the 2 wheel drive models) come off and go right back on. Pads were a little tricky since I had never done those before. Finally figured out the way to get them in. Used C clamps and a block of wood to push the caliper piston back in so the larger (new) pads would work. Probably did the fronts in 1.5 hours while kind of 'learning' how to do the job. I'm an old semi-competent guy as well.

BTW, aftermarket (inexpensive) rotors from AZone were still good after 50,000 miles of use when we traded the Laredo in.. D/C can seem to make on that will last 10,000 miles. Also, I tried the more expensive ceramic pads and still got a lot of dust. The new Envoy and my old Trooper don't ever show ANY brake dust...the Jeep front wheels would be covered in black dust in 2-3 days...pitiful.

Bill, thank you very much for the reply. I think I will give it a try and thanks also for the note about the ceramic pads, I was thinking of using them but will pass. Only have 45K miles on the GJC and it is in great shape otherwise. My wife loves it so will keep for a couple more years, but it will the last D/C product I buy.

    Thanks again.

From what I remember, the 2000's had a caliper redesign to help eliminate the heat that was causing the warp. I'd probably go with new calipers too and replace them to help keep warp from reoccurring. www.wjjeeps.com has the part numbers if you search under brake repairs.

Oh my god, we have the same problem. I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee 4x4 V6 with automatic transmission. I experienced the same problem as you. If I don't warm up the jeep before I run it be stuck on first gear. My car has about 146k miles. Everything u discribe is what I have. And I have yet to find the answer to the cause of the problem. If you have the answer or know what the cause of the problem please do reply back. Desperately in need of answer.

wait until you hit the 100:150k miles u will have plenty of problems. I have the same year jgc. My mileage is around 146:150k miles and i'm having lots of problem with it from the trans to brakes problem u name it. I suggest u trade it in for something else before it will be a major prob. If you choose to stick with the jeep good luck, but I'll tell you this much it will hit you in the pocket.

I purchased a 2004 JGC Overland in Feb 2003 and it is just great. The 4.7L HO engine has plently of zip. Only problems is the brakes, I have 16,000 miles and I just replaced the rotors and pads with EBC performance sports rotors and EBC greenstuff pads. Otherwise go for it.

I had this happen to me twice so far. Both times, I had engaged the cruise control and moved my feet to a more comfortable position, close to the seat. My knee hit the key and shut the Jeep off. I think I had full control though, brakes + steering, not 100% sure. Everything returned to normal when i switched key to ON position. (I didn't have to crank the starter)

My advice would be not to buy the GCL, the rotors will need to be replaced even 3-5000 miles. I have had a 96, 2000 and 2003 GCL. They all went through rotors like they were candy. The 2003 with the High Output engine went through 3 sets of front rotors in 27,000 miles. I then bought the 2005 GC with the Hemi, what a big mistake. The vehicle shakes and shudders going up hill. It feels like it has a bad plug or wires. The Jeep dealers don't know what to do and Chrysler is no help also. Now I'm stuck with a $42,000 vehicle for the next 3 years. I would never buy another Jeep product again and advise others not to either. ">

Contrary to what some will say, I'm going to say get a Grand if you want one. :)

I had a 2000 GCL. We lived in the mountains of soCal (over 4200 ft elevation). Twisty roads, elevation changes etc. We got over 63,000 on the factory pads and rotors. Yes there was rotor warp there. We had them milled and put new pads on. No rotor warping for another 20,000 miles. At THAT point, the TSB had been issued for the new caliper design to fix the warp issue. Had we kept the Jeep, I would have replaced them. We replaced it with a truck with more hauling capacity and we no longer lived in an area required 4x4.

We were VERY light on the brake pedal and did not drive it like a Corvette. We took care of it and did regular maintenance, so there were no surprises for us.

This Jeep was one of two that we own(ed). I still have a 97 Wrangler I bought used in 2002 and it is turning out to be a great vehicle as well.

If you decide on a Grand, just be aware of the main issues and keep an eye on them. At the first sign of an issue, take it in and have it looked at.

Best of luck to ya on this one.

If I had heeded the words of warnings from so many Jeep naysayers, I would never have been able to say that my 2000 Laredo has been one of the best and least troublesome vehicles I have ever owned (I have owned 11)- and across all makes-Japanese, German (luxury and non) ,and American. I purchased it in Jan 03 because I needed something for the distance to work and the snow on the mountain I work at(oh and the deer) , and based on over 2 months of research on SUVs, this one was the hands down winner and it's only a double blessing that it's been so reliable. I also have had the absolute best dealer to work with- Hendrick Jeep in Woodbridge, VA!!! I was in an accident over a week ago- so the entire front grill and it's parts will be replaced. What's cool is that I got an 05 Laredo 4x4 as a rental. This one is black on black, and pretty much bare bones, which is okay bc after all it is a rental car. What I like: It really rides smoothly (even on those crappy Goodyears), and it is very quiet. Plus I think people look at it a bit because of the redesign, and the Black is pretty sleek.
What I don't like: It uses more gas than my 2k, looks cheap on the inside, doors seem thinner (maybe not as much material), and the new body design reminds me of a Rodeo. The cargo area has less space (it seems), even with the spare underneath. And I HATE the AWD system. They also took away (in this model) the stereo controls that were on the steering wheel.
Overall- unless they improve this one in 06- I will buy an 04.
PS- one last thing- they seriously need to update the color selection.
Bad move Chrysler and Daimler Benz.

I agree with a lot of what you write. I rented an '05 a few weeks ago when I was in Chicago on business. Unfortunately for me, it was a 2WD and white (yuck).

It was very smooth on the highway and much, much better than my lifted '98. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the independent front suspension.

One very favorable aspect to me was the power. I was very surprised when I looked under the hood and it only had the 3.7L. I was suitably impressed.

The front seats were much better than in previous models.

You do lose cargo space "height" but you get the benefit of not having to screw with the seats to fold them down flat. I could live with that.

Why I would not buy one right now: The color selection is TERRIBLE. Come on DC, give us at least ONE decent color. I'm not crazy about the exterior styling that much either but it would grow on me if they could give me just one color I could live with! I guess I'll just have to put 200,000 miles on my '98 :shades:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee just debuted in the Middle East a week ago, and I found it strange how here the HEMI engine available on the JGC only produces 326hp, while in the States you get 330hp from the same engine. Any thoughts?
  • perlmanperlman Member Posts: 1
I agree. My first 1999 Jeep GCL had the rotors replaced after 4000 miles. Dealer replaced them and saild it was a bad factory set of rotors. After 9000 miles same problem (Jeep would shake rattle and roll at 40 miles an hour when I steped on the brakes. Rotors were replaced again and about every 10,000 miles until I traded it in for a new 2003 Jeep GCl from the same dealer. After 6000 milles the dealer had to replace the rotors on my new 2003 Jeep. Dealer was good about this problem since I know other owners had the same rotor problem. I traded in the 2003 Jeep after one year and purchased a Mazda Tribute for $10,000 less.
The Mazda now has over 60,000 miles on it and the rotors have never needed services. In fact I have yet to have any problems at all with the Mazda.

The qualtiy control on the Mazda is excellent and I have not had one problem in

Better gasoline here in the States?
    I kill myself sometimes. :P

Guys, enough with the brake rotors already. Yes, the GC had "issues" on the '99-'03s. Give it a rest.
  • ldordalldordal Member Posts: 4
I totally agree. To give it a "rest". I mean. I guess I will just have to count myself as one of the lucky few.
  • jeepdtjeepdt Member Posts: 15
Turning the key to the "on" does nothing. You have to either stop the car or put it into Nuetral and CRANK! Imagine that happening driving full highway speed and having this happen to you, not fun. Otherwise I love the power and control of the new JGC.
  • jeepdtjeepdt Member Posts: 15
Maybe you just have a lemon. I've not had this problem, but I've got an ergonomic issue with the ignition switch
  • jeepdtjeepdt Member Posts: 15
Which color is missing? Its available in red, white green, grey, silver, black and kacki; in metalic and non metalics. Maybe the superbirght YELLOW of the Xtera? I would agree the gas mileage is worst but hey, guess what....it's a JEEP not a CIVIC!

I swear my Jeep is haunted, it will be running fine then click all the gages go to flashing the needles go around and around the buzzers go off and then it will stop. I took it to the dealer twice and the computer shows nothing wrong. They changed a censer and said maybe that would work but who can afford 300.00 a week until they find the right censer. "Help"

When I put the A/C on, it makes this screeching nosie. It does't always occur but the nosie is really annoying. I took it to 2 different dealer workshops but they could not find anyting wrong, they even test drove it but still nothing. But when I drive it and put the A/C on, i hear the nosie. Does anyone have any suggestions as what could be wrong? I really need help!
    Thanks
  • erickplerickpl Member Posts: 2,735
If it is a loud screeching noise that gets a bit louder when you give it gas, then you may want to inspect and/or replace your belt. You may want to try tightening the belt up a bit.

I hate to suggest this, but if you put your head under the hood while it is running, you may be able to isolate where the sound is coming from. If it isn't the belt, it may be some bearings in the A/C compressor....*shrug*. But if it seems to come from all over the engine, it is most likely your serpentine belt.

In reference to the colors- they probably need to get rid of one of those "khaki" colors and offer a charcoal like color- and it would be really nice to see a light color other than Stone White. The more I see that vehicle on the road- the less I like it. The other thing I wanted to say is the exterior is cheap- I was washing the rental (yes, I know) and the quarter panel on the rear felt like it bent under my hand.
