Correct Transmission Fluid

I just bought a 2008 Escape 3.0 with 90,000 miles a few weeks ago. It was pretty cheap because the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Why would the tranny go out at only 90,000 miles ?? Well, $1,850 later it is running great. I pulled the stick after driving 30 miles and the level just barely reaches the hatch marks. How much will it need to bring it up close to the full mark? I have an old half empty quart of Valvoline Max Life fluid that says Dexron III/ Mercon on it. Is this the correct fluid to use? The manual says use Mercon V only?
