You need rear calipers? Don't you mean rear brake pads?

The warranty on wear items is 1 year or 12,000 miles, which ever comes first.

I might have to question the need for rear rotors. The pads are notoriously soft, thus wear pretty quickly, but it really shouldn't have eaten the rotors.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
The brakes should be checked at least every 10,000 miles. The pads on the rear of VW's are soft and it is not unusual to require replacement as early as 20,000 miles. The rear rotors can be turned once if the pads are replaced on time. The rotors are only $25 each front or rear and I recommend spending the $50 for new rotors and then getting aftermarket pads such as Mintex or Greenstuff and you will get 40-50K of wear out them. $400.00 is quite expensive for brakes even if you do need rotors. This is not a warranty issue, though the worn brakes should be noted on the last service and if not I would be asking the dealer why not.

My sensors have become sensitive but the dealer is insensitive.

So it seems that with VW you can only get parts from the dealership for Jetta's. My question is regarding brakes. Can you take the Jetta's to another repair shop to have the brakes replaced or does the car have to go into the dealership for that? I have 23k miles on my Y2K VR6 so when the time comes for brakes I would like to know where to go. Thanks.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
Just about any competent shop can do brakes on Jetta and other VW's. Parts for brakes and other common maint. items are available at local auto parts stores. VW OEM parts can be purchased at a large discount from dealer prices over the internet or phone. I purchase nearly all my parts over the internet and save over 50% on some parts and even with shipping the savings is well worth the effort.

I've heard great things about Mintex Red, and most likely I'll be getting those.

Thanks Moparbad and 8u6hfd. I'll keep those websites handy.

Hey, if they are not going to cover it under warranty, then go somewhere else. They are sure to be cheaper if nothing else.

What I'd really recommend, however, is to do it yourself. It is quite simple, and you can do the entire front (or rear) for less than $90, maybe less than $80.

    You'll like it, really.

you need to order a special tool for pushing the piston back into the caliper. it's VW thing where a big clamp doesn't work

i have a 97 Jetta GT....34K...new brakes and tires at 30k, and that is all. Runs great, except for one flaw. Occasionally, when i attempt to open the moonroof or put on the ac, i get nothing. The power door locks work, i have roll-down windows (thank God, since I read that the power ones break all the time). If i re-start the car, the moonroof will open and the ac and fan will go on....what is wrong? it happens about once a week, but when i start it a few times it goes away...id appreciate some help!

    Hello everyone,
I've had many problems with my 00 Jetta over the 3 years I've been driving it (cassette slot damaged, front passenger window stuck, brakes used up at 30K miles, abnormal oil consumption, armrest area peeling off...)
The latest one is a bit strange because the check engine light comes on and the P,R,D,3,2,1 display becomes dark. I feel a slight bump when I change from Park to Reverse and vice-versa. About 75 miles later, everything is clear; 15 miles later, however, the check engine light and the dark display come on again. Also, when the check engine light is on, cruise control does not work but as soon as the light is off, it works again!!!
Should I worry about this? Can anyone tell me what it could be? I recently took the car to a dealer for the 30K mile maintenance but, by then, the light was off and they didn't notice anything.
    Thanks guys.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
When that light comes on, the computer stores a code in there. Have the dealer pull the code. If they tell you there isn't one, they are full of crap. Make them get it.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
and the dealership will charge you $70.

If there's an Autozone nearby, try them instead.
  • kdiakdia Member Posts: 3
Thank you guys for your suggestions!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Never thought about that. I forget, they will pull the codes for free at Autozone. Good suggestion. :)

Still having same problem, took vehicle to dealership, car finally started after 3 days of not starting finally did. Shop had car for over a week. Said message from car was fuel pump relay. Had this fixed again for second time in 3 months. Got car home, then would not start again, car making a pounding noise, like you have your hazard lights on and lights inside car dim everytime noise occurs. Noise begins when you open driver side door. Any ideas what this may be. Car back at dealer and will not make the noise.

2 guys I work with just unloaded their Jetta's.
    Both were 99's.

    1st guy - 60 k auto - tranny going up, 2 starters, 2 alternators, 1 a/c compressor, front-end rebuild, excessive oil consumption.

2nd guy - 66 k manual - clutch needed replacement, 2 starters, 2 alternators, a/c compressor, needs new a/c compressor & evaporator, also needs front end rebuild, 1 power window doesn't work, struts shot.

One bought a Mitsu, the other a Honda.

    Both are done with VW.

Sadly, most people I know who own them seem to have an awful lot of problems and to a fault they HATE the dealer sevice network. Both guys above had all work done at the dealer. Parts are expensive.

I hope they have better luck with their new vehicles (the guy with the Honda got an automatic this time and it's already acting up - doesn't like to shift out of second gear).

I have a 1999.5 Jetta and thankfully have only had minor problems with it. Had an O2 sensor replaced, a burnt out bulb in the fan speed knob, and a faulty MAF sensor. I have 49000 miles on my car and my brakes are only 50% worn (front and rear). I haven't had to replace a single window regulator....yet.

As far as having AutoZone (aka AutoBone), yes they can retrieve OBD codes out of your PCM, but they can't diagnose what's actually wrong with your car....the morons who work there wouldn't be smart enough to. I've read so many complaints from cheap VW owners that the VW dealer is a ripoff and charges $70.00 to diagnose a CEL. Guess what? That's ANY dealership, but I have a feeling that many people forget that dealers do have the latest equipment, OEM parts, latest software, and the correct diagnostic service manuals that the boneheads at AutoBone don't have. Let's say for example that AutoBone pulled a code for "low catalytst efficiency"...what part are you going to buy for your car?? Are you going to guess by buying a $600 catalytic converter when it could have been either the front or rear O2 sensor that set the code... Dealerships have a lot more overhead than independent garages do, and that is part of why you will pay more at a dealership. I can't believe I'm listening to people who spend $20-26K on a Europen marque(and this is not a discussion of what models are built in Mexico, Brazil, etc....any one who can read a VIN number can tell in what country a vehicle is built), and then complain about spending $70 for diagnosing a check engine light. And for those who claim that their VW is a lemon, you should see how many problems exist with Ford, GM, and Chrysler vehicles before you even begin to say that your VW is lemon. If you stop and consider that the majority of people who will post a message on this website, compared to the number of VW's sold in the US in ONE model year, let alone since 1999 when the current body style came out, the problems are not that widespread. Then to consider the number of vehicles that VWAG builds in one year under the VW, Audi, SEAT, and Skoda names, the problems become even less. Other factors that we don't know include vehicle modifications from OE, maintenance, use and abuse, etc. I was reading that one person on another website has had 16 window regulators on their car. When so many people have had 0,1, or 2 replaced, the person who had 16 may be in question....what the hell does he do to his windows, etc. Reading a group of complaint posts on this site proves nothing, unless you have all of the relevant information. I work at a dealership and hear all kinds of complaints about their vehicles, and many times it turns out there is some information which the person was reluctant to divulge. Examples are: my window regulator broke (as it turns out, the person had been inside the door before to replace speakers and did not have the linkage reinstalled correctly). Or, I can;t believe that the rear end failed on my vehicle (after you see the mud INSIDE the differential and that the diff had not been serviced in the 65,000 miles the vehicle had on it). So I think we need to have all of the relevant info before we begin generalizing that VW's are junk....a lot may have to do with owner abuse...

I have an '02 jetta that the A/C vents next to each door barely blow.. the dealer told me that's a common complaint; I drove an '03 and did not notice that. Anyone else have this problem?

I have not noticed that on my '02 Jetta. My AC works great!!!

My 4 yr old thought the small speaker cover in our '02 jetta GLX w/ Monsoon looked fun to play with (the small speaker on the rear door by the door handle and power window button). Now I have a dent in the cover where she pushed it in. Does anyone know how to remove the speaker cover so I can push out the dent from the backside? Do I have to remove the entire door panel? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not the *most* car knowledgable person in the world, but this is about as well as I can convey the problem.

I have a 93 Jetta GL automatic, 103k miles. I've only had it about 5 months now; before that it had a rebuilt tranny; not too sure on the details of that.

It was running great for a while; then it started to have some problems. Off the line, it got to be a bit sluggish, and seem like it was stuck in gear, around 2nd gear or so. I'd have to hit the gas, then let off, and get back on it, and sometimes it works to get it in gear and sometimes it doesn't, and I'll have to work the gas several times.

It used to only happen when I was pulling out. Now it is starting to be sluggish at all speeds. It used to be a zippy little car but now I'm stuck driving like a grandma. It almost seems like something is plugged up inside, but I don't know what. It's also really loud at 3k rpms; wondered if maybe they put the wrong exhaust or something on it at some point. Gas mileage is also down a little bit. I'm hoping to have a vague clue of what is wrong with it so I can explain it to the shop.

Is it better to take it to a VW dealer or to just a random shop?

Also, does anyone know of a dealer in the Philadelphia area that can be trusted?

Hello everyone, I'm hoping someone has experience with this quirky Jetta behavior. I have a 2000, 1.8T Jetta and a few weeks ago it began to have problems starting (takes a long time to crank the sucker). It's pretty sporadic, but it seems it'll only do it after it's been off for half an hour to a few hours after the engine's been turned off. It never has problems starting in the morning or after work. I'm puzzled here. Anyone have any wisdom to share on this?

The Check Engine light was on around the same time, but AutoZone tells me the low level coolant sensor triggered. The reservoir read just below min. Is this related? Thanks in advance.

Say, 8u6hfd, earlier in this discussion you mentioned that you needed a special VW tool to push the piston back into the caliper when replacing break pads. Where did you get the tool and was it expensive? Thanks.

My 2002 1.8L Jetta - not even a year old- returned to the Service Dept for the 3rd time in 11 days. I picked it up the 2nd time after they had it 5 days -on 9/13 and when I started it up it did the same thing, by the time I ran inside to get the Service Advisor it had stopped. I got the "look" . I told them I would see them on Monday (today).
The problem has them so baffled they are calling in the VW Engineer.
When I turn the car on it hesitates and jerks fwd and back, it is as if it were coughing and sputtering, when it it is placed in reverse it is even worse and has even stalled. If I sit for a couple of minutes in park and rev it up the hesitating /jerking/coughing stops. It also does this when the AC is turned on initially, I have to wait a few minutes.
When I am driving it feels like I am driving against resistance and it is very sluggish. The gear shifts are rough and jerky. Also, the check engine light begins to flash with all the sounds and movements.
Today, just like last week, the check engine light stayed on.
It is usually worse when the car has been sitting for several hours but the sluggish acceleration and rough shifting is always.
They changed the ECM ( the computer) they said it had been misfiring -I guess it is something else.
Also, a lot of VWs at the dealership I use are being brought in b/c the windows are falling down and sticking. My windows are getting tight and squeaking at times. Another person here who has a 1 yr old Jetta had to have the AC replaced.
I thought these cars were supposed to be so reliable. I am very disappointed with my VW experience. My 2000 also had some serious problems... I should've learned my lesson the first time.
  • zenythzenyth Member Posts: 5
My 2000 Jetta developed that problem after 1 month. I called the VW customer # and she told me to take the palm of my hand and hit the gear shift a couple of times - it worked... for awhile,it would take me longer and longer to get it out of park until it finally got stuck and had to be towed. The tow truck guy could not believe he could not get it into neutral, finally after much pounding he was able to pop the gear thing into neutral.
It had something to do with some little switch under the break pedal getting stuck.
Now I am dealing with problems on my 2002. I have to laugh to keep from crying when it comes to this car.
    I knew I should've gotten a truck. =)

I have a 2002 Jetta 1.8T and lately I've noticed that the front and rear carpets keep getting soaked. I've dried them out and replaced them, made sure sunroof and windows remained closed, only to find them soaked again days later. The VW dealer tells me that the sunroof gutters might be clogged, but I don't buy it. Nothing else in the car is wet, including the A and C-Pillars where the water is supposedly draining from and into the car. Has anyone else come across this??
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Could it have something to do w/ the condensation produced from the A/C? I'd check the floor near the lower front vents.
  • muscarelmuscarel Member Posts: 22
That's very possible, I guess. I'll check when I get home. Thanks....Anyone else with any ideas?
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
The condensate drain line from the a/c unit under your dash can become clogged or even disconnected (I've seen in happen on several of my own cars over the years) and you wind up with wet mats/carpet -- usually moreso on the passenger's side of the car. Get up under the passenger-side footwell and see if there's a little hose that's come loose from a fitting in the firewall. That may be your entire problem.

I have a 99 Jetta VR6 with a slew of problems which started a year after we got the car (& of course is no longer under warranty). The problems that I've experienced in the last 7 weeks will now cost me close to $3000 in repairs. The car had been running rough for a long time and feeling sluggish. Since we got the car it has always run rough to the point of stalling when it has sat for extended periods in heavy or steady rain. Our service manager told us that the car was just running rich, b/c I primarily drive long highway miles. The problem has gotten steadily worse. The upshot-- on 7/25 replaced the rear O2 sensor, on 8/17 replaced the catalytic converter, on 8/25 replaced the fuel relay switch. After each "repair" the car still ran rough, and most recently with a period of steady rain, the car ran rough and kept running rough even after warming up. Now, the problem is the ignition coil pack--it needs to be replaced. The ignition probably should have been checked when we first complained about it under warranty. Now it's out of warranty, and I'm out loads of cash, and Volkswagen and the dealership/service dept from whom I bought the car refuses to take responsibility for their ineptitude in diagnosing the problem. I'm past rage and frustration--I'm worn out. I think that 23 trips to the dealer in 3 years is ridiculous.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
The problems you list indicate to me that you have an inept service department at your VW dealer. Run, don't walk to a independent shop or different VW dealer. $3000 is absolutely ridiculous.
  • mpynempyne Member Posts: 120
this is bull, i dont know if it would be feasible but maybe you could contact an attorney to see if there is any type of fraud happening here?

you could try searching the internet for your rights regarding repairs in your state.

    good luck!!
  • philomelaphilomela Member Posts: 4
I have contacted 2 attorneys already and b/c the car is now out of warranty and b/c of its mileage (89K highway miles), I can't seek remediation under the lemon law. And b/c the service manager never documented the "running rough" problem when I first complained about it, it appears we have no recourse there. After going through several nasty rounds with the general manager at the dealership, they knocked 20% off of the ignition repair. Needless to say, we're not taking it back to there again.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I recommend you go to and try to get an extended warranty on this car. You might be able to pull it off. Or else take that $3000 and trade the car and get something else.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I don't know about VW or your particular dealership, but here in Virginia I had a whole slew of driveability problems relating to a 1994 Mazda B2300 pickup truck I purchased new.

Because the original problem (engine pinging/sluggish acceleration/low gas mileage) was reported while the vehicle was still under the factory warranty, my dealership, working with Mazda North America, ignored the expiration of that warranty at 50,000 miles and continued working on the problem, at no expense to me, right up until I traded it for another vehicle at over 100,000 miles.

While they never solved the problem, they sure spent a lot of their money trying to find it. Hell, at about 70,000 miles (wayyyy out of warranty), they put me in a loaner car for two weeks so they could take the entire engine out of my truck and inspect, replace and/or remachine nearly everything. I saw that repair order; I would've spent nearly three grand on that job alone -- not counting the two weeks in a rental car.

Like others have said, seek legal advice. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, they should be held responsible for repairing a problem that you reported under warranty. I'll refer you to the following portion of the Magnuson-Moss Act and urge you to pay attention to parts 1 and 4:

    http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/15/2304.html

    Good luck.

The problem with that is that there is no documentation to support his allegations. That might make it a little bit difficult. I know with the problems I had with my Jetta (mostly rattles), I made sure to get consice documentation and keep good records. That's important in any car repair situation, in case the mentioned thing does fail outside the warranty of the car, it was an existing problem that didn't come up after the warranty's expiration.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
    Oh well, he's screwed.

Maybe he'll learn from this experience and get his service manager to log all of his complaints in the future. I make sure mine does!

I'm posting this on behalf of my uncle, who owns a '99 Jetta. The mechanic can't figure out what the cause is, but the "check engine" light stays on. I read here that another poster has this problem. Anyone else who's had this problem with his/her Jetta, and knows for certain what the cause is?

My uncle says there was a recall on the "02 sensor," and he's had that changed at the dealer. But the "check engine" light keeps coming on, and he's not getting a response from VW about what the problem is. Thanks in advance to anyone who might know.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
When that CEL comes on, a code is spit out why the light is on. If VW says they can't find it, that doesn't make sense. If they plug the car up to their VAG-COM, it would tell right away what the problem is. This sounds like a crock to me...

Since we're talking about rain (kinda), it's been raining like nuts down here in Florida and the windsheild wipers are very annoying. My other car, for those who didn't catch it in my screen-name, is a 2000 Tahoe and the wipers on that things are incredibly fast. The '00 Jetta VR6's on the other hand, are slow as heck and quite frankly scare me to death when driving at 50-60 mph in a hard rain. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get the wipers to go faster (I realize they fixed the problem on the newer models)? Any help would be appreciated.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I didn't know this was an issue on older Jetta's. Sorry I don't have an answer. The only response I have is to ask the dealer for a fix.

I have a 2000 Jetta GLS TDI with 25000 miles. It has been a trouble fee car except for one thing - the mechanism that moves the power windows up and down keep breaking. I am having the 3rd one replaced next week. The repair is about $150. Fortunately the first 2 were covered on warranty.

Does anyone else have a similar problem?
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
That is a MAJOR isse with VW's. Read a little back in this thread and you'll see ALL the complaints. Also, I believe VW is footing the bill on all of these caes even if your VW is out of warranty.

Mine has been on since May. I have taken it to the dealer 3x. Each time it came back on the next day. They said it was the fuel pump. I don't know what else to do. I am waiting for the next oil change and try it to get fixed once and for all.

Rain-X...either using elbow grease or the Rain-X washer fluid or the VW washer fluid (which contains stuff similar to Rain-X).

My dad has a '99 Jetta and the car has been trouble free for the most part until Saturday. Something broke and now the car is running on 3 cylinders. We removed the bad spark plug and it was bent and the head is stripped. The car is still under warranty and is going back to the dealer today. Has anyone had or heard of a similiar problem?
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
How is the car under warranty if it is a '99?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The powertrain warranty on the older Jettas is 10 years/100K miles for original owners, 5 years/60K miles for second owners, unless they are immediate family, then it stays the same.

On the 2002+, it's 5 years/60K powertrain no matter what.
  • artsteinartstein Member Posts: 6
My Father is the original owner. I just thought I would put it out there to see if this was a common problem for that motor. Thanks for the comments.
