My wife really liked the car. When we were test driving it she suggested the most we offer be $6,400. I was thinking $6,000 would be about max. It's a very bland car...visually. So I liked it, but didn't feel the love.

On the maintenance, yeah the car only has 48,000 miles, but it's almost 10 years old and no fluid changes/maintenance except for oil. And yeah, the car could definitely use a good interior and exterior detail.

Don't forget you need to get the teeth marks out of the bumper.

I don't do fantasy shows like that. When I read that it featured computer-generated zombie dragons as a plot device I felt my position was vindicated.

Get back to his house, about here is when you'll want to start taking notes, and the guy starts talking Kelley Blue Book price. $6,700. As y'all know, the ole Jipster don't play KBB. I played Edmunds True Market Value.....which may be why I'm still looking at cars. But, I mention how great an automotive site Edmunds is, and they value the private party price at $4,700 in clean condition. He says no way, Jose. I say, well, my son hasn't looked at the car yet, if we come over tomorrow and he likes it, will you split the difference and take $5,700. He again says too low. I mention the car will need new brakes all around, transmission flush as fluid is dirty, and.probably new tires as the tires on the car are showing signs of dry rot. He balks. I say I'll do $6,000 if my son likes it. And the guy agress. The Jipst method of used car buying has worked?

The guy texts me a few hours ago, says his fiancee put the kabash of the deal, and he can't sell it for $6,000. He'll sell it for $6,500, but I can make an offer close to his. Now...this was a really nice guy. I think he was honest with me. Mrs. Jip and.myself enjoyed speaking with him. So I respond we can't do $6,000 because of the repairs needed. I mention how these car web sites are crazy with how they value the exact car so far apart. Say thanks anyhow. But, come on, you make a deal, agree on a price...then go back on your word? Not cool. I think Jmonroe would have sold me his Legacy for $10,400 had I made the deal before he found out XXX company was going to give him $12,600....KACHING! Pretty sure he would. But, what are you gonna do?

Guy just texted back an hour ago, says he'll do what I had offered to do, split the difference, and sell the car for $6,250. I've yet to respond. It's late.

Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Snide remarks?

With all that bumping and fast dealing he doesn’t sound like a nice guy to me. He sounds like a sharp car flipper. Executive lease? What is that, fancy talk for a rental car? Do a CarFax or AutoCheck and be sure to check the federal site to be sure the car wasn’t a submarine or a get away car.

If you are looking in the 2010-2012 range take Sotty’s Advice and get a Fusion-Sable.

Does he have oil change records? That “haven’t done a thing to it” line sounds like he just got it at the auction. (There, that’s my snide remark).

What condition did you and he use for the valuation tool? Burns in the seats and dog bit bumper must degrade it to “fair”. Does it smell of smoke?

Some people love fantasy, others hate it. I like to live in the real world and watch or read about "real" people. But, that is why they have different genres and Game of Thrones is a powerhouse.

I would presume it is far easier to write fantasy genres since nothing needs to actually make sense. I find the popularity hard to understand. Back when I was younger the main fantasy genre was science fiction, which had a very devoted but small group of fans. Now this medieval fantasy stuff (with a dash of zombie thrown in) seems to have broader appeal. It makes me wonder yet again about where our society's collective mindset is heading.

Like OF says, what executive leases a Sonata?
He thinks a 10 year old car is worth about 1/3 of its original price.
Some people quote KBB etc, but use the retail price or trade in value...may be different than private sale.
The guy broke his word on the price...........no ethical person would do that.
It sounds like you will have to put $1500 or so into it right away.
Con men always come across as being honest and decent....that is why they are Con Men.
If you do buy, make part of the deal he pays for a mechanic's inspection...if the car passes you will buy it.
For sure don't buy it "As Is". I see people who do that on Hot Bench....little chance of getting your money back.

I agree. Even $6K for a 2010 Sonata in the kind of condition you describe seems pricey to me. That was a first-year model which had a number of issues. The Edmunds number is more in line with its value I think. I would treat his counteroffer as a get out of jail free card to allow you to move on to a better, different car.

I know from working for a book publisher Sci-Fi was a small but dedicated genre. Sci-Fi is more like rocket ships, it is the future but it is more about things that could happen.
Then it branched off into another genre....called fantasy. I tried reading a fantasy book to see what it was about, when they started talking about orange dragons and pink skies I couldn't go on...that was by about page 11.
I think people who like fantasy are in la la land....it is an escape from every day life. I prefer stories that did or could happen....but, there is a huge audience for Harry Potter and Game of Thrones....to each their own.

ab, 2010 was the last year of the squarer body style. I actually like those a lot.

JIP, I agree with others that you are right walking. though after checking cars.com, dealers at least are asking sill prices for these and Fusions (the other car of that vintage I like in this class).

the one you found scares me since it sounds like in 10 years it has just been ignored, including keeping it clean. And that is a bad sign by itself usually. Smoked in, dog attacked? Needs everything consumable? I would be lowering my offer, not going up.

Miles are still good. Tell him you researched, and will give him the $6,500, minus costs to bring it up to snuff at $1,500. So $5,000 cash on the hood, or wave goodbye. He probably won't be getting more than that anyway.

I suggest you have a mechanic go over the car before your son looks at the car. If inspection is AOK and your son likes it, offer him $6150. Why barter with the guy if, in the end, it needs even more $ investment?

You should know that those 4 cylinder engines are iffy if they have not been properly maintained. My son bought one off lease and has regretted the purchase due to engine.

I know it is a slippery slope, and people have budgets, but I have trouble paying that much for something pushing 10 YO. You can get a 2017ish Elantra at this point with lower miles for $11-12K. And have something under warranty, way more features, that will likely last much longer. Long term, can be cheaper to do that than get the older car and replace it 1 or 2 times.

Scotty actually made a good point (talking about his son). Sometimes, if you are planning to keep something a long time, better to buy new if it is a car that holds resale value. So he bought a new Tacoma, instead of a used one.

One thing I love is when she was 16 she was studying to be a teacher, but she was writing songs. At 16 she took her music to a producer and they knew she could write. It always amazes me how talented people get the right break (that they usually work very hard to get), and it becomes a life changing event.

Thanks for the reminder. It’s on my list. My sister saw it, loved it, and has bugged me about going to see it. I will...eventually!

I’d rather just have an old fashion key. I don’t need auto start, remote back scratchers or any of the other modern stuff. The size of the fobs has been getting ridiculous. I used to carry all my keys on one ring but can’t anymore. I seldom even lock my cars so why do I need a $300 key as big as a loaf of bread? A $900 smart phone would be even worse. My favorite key is for my 2004 cargo van. If I lose one I can make a copy at any hardware store for $3.
C'mon oldfarmer.......you haven't lived until you have got used to a keyless key. No need to pull a key out of your pocket, just get in and press a button. Of course, everything has it's price, batteries go and they went quite often with early models. But, once you get used to it you don't want to go back. Do you still get up to change channels on your TV....or have wind up windows in your cars....that is what a key is like.

Now I have to ask, do you have a manual transmission?

@abacomike ....my son and I are GOT addicts. He actually came over Sunday night just to watch it in the home theater.

And, you’re right....every week they put out an epic episode that rivals any movie in theaters.

Sunday, they finally made all the family connections that everyone had suspected were there. What they do with that info, and how they defeat (if they defeat) the Night Walkers will constitute this last season.

Great fun!

Well, it surprised me the owner reneged on the deal. Older guy, retired, about 65 years old. Had tears in his eyes when he was telling a story about his daughter being shot and almost dieing. Also told me a story about how some crazy dude on drugs tried to break into his house and he was afraid he'd have to blow the guys head off. I'm usually pretty good at sniffing out curbstoners. I got the impression that this guy didn't want to go $6,000. That I talked him into it, and when he had time to think about it he changed his mind. I did think he made a tactical error when he said he hasn't done anything to the car but oil changes. His meaning it hasn't needed any repairs and it was a good reliable car. My meaning was that all of that maintenance and new parts would be calling on my shoulders.

I really didn't have enough time to inspect the car like I would have wanted. He said he had some oil change records. His oil change reminder sticker on the windshield showed his car had been 3,000 miles since his last oil change, but that oil change was a year and a half ago.

Scotty stop taking his meds? He moves like a mongoose on amphetamines.

Pretty much the way I look at it, too. Guy agrees on a price, and then reneges? I don’t want to do business with that guy. Matter of fact, I’d call him back and tell him that....or, to let you know if he wants to accept your offer. If you haven’t bought anything yet, you’ll consider it.

Well, the owner said he had records his the glove box, I just never got around to looking. In a bit of a rush. The guy did have 3 other vehicles in his driveway. which I found suspicious when I spoke with him on the phone. Just him and his fiancee. Said he likes trucks. Didn't mention this in detail, but he really didn't advertise the car, that I know of. Someone on the neighborhood web site was asking if anyone was selling a car. He replied that he would sell his daughter's car. This post was dated Feburary 22nd. So if he's a flipper, I'd say he's not a very good one.

Thanks for the snide remark. My Health teacher in high school (ex college football lineman...huge guy), would always end class by asking. , "Any questions....comments....snide remarks?" I thought it amusing. Don't think anyone ever had a snide remark for him. LOL.

Yeah, there are.definite signs this guy is a flipper, and definite signs he isnt. I'm not convinced. Maybe he just doesn't know what he's talking about. LOL.

4 months ago, I tuned into HBO on demand and literally became hypnotized over the first 7 seasons. Great entertainment for a TV series that was produced as if it was a 200 million dollar movie every week.

Was wondering if any of you guys caught the new season premier last night. It’s on again on HBO this evening in 10 minutes (10:00 PM EDT).

I have read all the books (each one a masterpiece, imo) and have seen a few of the TV shows which are extremely well done. I have been waiting 2 years for supposedly, the last book in the series. My bet is they are waiting to release the last book because a feature big screen movie is in the offing based on that one.

A little devils advocate here, but to me, deals like this (a driveway, on the spit negotiation) are good as is, where is (just like the car!). Once you left, you essentially rejected the offer. So he is under no obligation to keep it open any period of time.

My favorite key is for my 2004 cargo van. If I lose one I can make a copy at any hardware store for $3.
C'mon oldfarmer.......you haven't lived until you have got used to a keyless key. No need to pull a key out of your pocket, just get in and press a button. Of course, everything has it's price, batteries go and they went quite often with early models. But, once you get used to it you don't want to go back.

Do you still get up to change channels on your TV....or have wind up windows in your cars....that is what a key is like.

Now I have to ask, do you have a manual transmission?

Are you asking me? I don't think Mercedes has manuals these days. I would consider one if I was buying a BMW or Audi.....but probably decide against. At my age I don't want a problem if I have an injured leg or arm etc.

JIP, I agree with others that you are right walking. though after checking cars.com, dealers at least are asking sill prices for these and Fusions (the other car of that vintage I like in this class).

the one you found scares me since it sounds like in 10 years it has just been ignored, including keeping it clean. And that is a bad sign by itself usually. Smoked in, dog attacked? Needs everything consumable? I would be lowering my offer, not going up.

Miles are still good. Tell him you researched, and will give him the $6,500, minus costs to bring it up to snuff at $1,500. So $5,000 cash on the hood, or wave goodbye. He probably won't be getting more than that anyway.

Yeah, I really like the styling of new generation Sonata...2011 and up. But, 2011 and 2012 are the years they were having problems with their engines. So the boxy/somewhat bland 2010 model was on my short list. The 2010-2013 Fusion is at the top of my list, as is the Mazda 6, which I almost never see a sale ad for.

I'm kind of thinking of sending the owner a lukewarm text, like I still can't pay his current asking price of $6,250, and see what he says. But, really not that interested. After reading some suggested costs, things I hadn't originally added in, like alignment, rotors, coolant change etc, $5,000 would probably be more realistic. But I don't think he'll go that low. He may start feeling bad and say.... ".o.k...ya got me....you win Jipster...$6,000 it is!" My reply: Too late pal, I just walked out the door. ;-)

Not a car I would pay a premium for. Look around, there should be a lot of those around. Maybe a newer one for that price.

Me? No not any longer since I switch the old hooptie cargo van for a newer hooptie van. When I was shopping for cheap convertibles I was looking for older (2000-2005) Mitsu Eclipses with stick but couldn’t find a V6 in that configuration. I thought a 4 would be a little wimpy. Then the Sebring came along at a price I couldn't resist.

Technically accurate. to lock in the price a deposit should be made....even $10 just to show faith. But, a decent person would not change the price agreed to one day later.

I say, well, my son hasn't looked at the car yet, if we come over tomorrow and he likes it, will you split the difference and take $5,700. He again says too low. I mention the car will need new brakes all around, transmission flush as fluid is dirty, and.probably new tires as the tires on the car are showing signs of dry rot. He balks. I say I'll do $6,000 if my son likes it. And the guy agress. The Jipst method of used car buying has worked?

I mention how these car web sites are crazy with how they value the exact car so far apart. Say thanks anyhow. But, come on, you make a deal, agree on a price...then go back on your word? Not cool. I think Jmonroe would have sold me his Legacy for $10,400 had I made the deal before he found out XXX company was going to give him $12,600....KACHING! Pretty sure he would. But, what are you gonna do?

I suggest you have a mechanic go over the car before your son looks at the car. If inspection is AOK and your son likes it, offer him $6150. Why barter with the guy if, in the end, it needs even more $ investment?

You should know that those 4 cylinder engines are iffy if they have not been properly maintained. My son bought one off lease and has regretted the purchase due to engine.

Yeah, if I came back today I was going to ask the owner if I could have a mechanic look at the car. There was what I thought a ticking noise coming from the engine. Mrs Jip said that was normal. "Sorry dear, that's just not good enough." And the transmission fluid was a real light blackish color. Wife said it was fine though. Think she really wanted the car. :-)

From your prospective did the new tax law really have an impact? Claim is $2300 savings average but that could be selective interpretation.

Personally, I think I saved money but my income has changed so I can’t be sure.

I keep telling Mrs Jip it would be better to spend a little more. Very difficult to find a older car with good miles that is priced right.

If I had seen Jmonroes offer on his Subbie a little earlier, had a little more time to work on Mrs Jip...that Subbie could be in my driveway now. But, Mrs jipl kept saying, " Out of budget" AND "What? You want to drive all the way to Pittsburgh to buy a car from somebody you don't know....he could be a scammer, or a murderer. " Something like that. LOL.

Even $6k is too much, IMHO. At best, they'd get $3k on a trade. Would sell for $3500 at auction. I'd want to be a $5k at the most with the current needs.

Jip, I missed the handshake and contingency part. That makes a difference. But, based on what Q said, maybe for the best? The problem is, so hard to find a clean one at that price, not all miles up. What he should do is clean it up and service it, though it appears he wants ready to roll money, without making it ready to roll.

This is also why I keep giving up on the cheaper used car market. I don’t have the energy for it at this point.

I don't want to get into your little discussion but I think Mike explained how he can definitely afford to drive the car he does.....and he loves it. Why would he buy a Civic and try to get 250000 miles out of it? He buys what he wants because he can. Life is to be lived, not a contest to see how many pennies you can save.

true life is to be lived. Some people prefer to live their lives by driving fine cars and spend their money there. Others don't get as much enjoyment out of their cars and instead live life by other means and spend their money on those pursuits. I for one prefer to get the most miles out of my car so I can spend my limited resources living my life on other pursuits.
