Good to see your typeface here again! :-)

    Re: chat

Sheesh...poor JohnV. It seems that chat just does not want to behave. Hopefully John will have an opportunity to look at it asap.

    Hope this isn't WTLW, but:
JD Powers Long Term reliability scores
    http://money.cnn.com/2003/07/08/pf/autos/bc.autos.durability/inde- x.htm

Unfortunately, Subaru shows up just above average, right below GM (ouch!).

It's not WTLW, since it was only posted this week. :-) It was posted in Cafe on Monday.
Subaru did get special mention in the JD Powers press release for having better numbers than the short term survey.

Patti: I see in my letter to SoA on your behalf a terrible grammatical error. I wrote:

"While she not have able to address each individual’s problem personally, she was instrumental in helping them find the help they needed."

What I intended was "While she MAY not have BEEN able to..."

It looks as though it still had the intended effect.

    Welcome back. You were missed.

Welcome back, I am glad that the letters had the desired effect, hope you are also fully recovered from the neck surgery.

Cheers Pat. ( On a quick visit to town from the lake)

Sure Dave, I'll buy ya lunch next time we meet up. Maybe when the 2005 Outback premieres? :-)

Where is paisan? He's missing all this action.

And by the way, another set of "Subaru Crew Bronze Leaf and Gold Filigree with Oak Clusters" to each of the 20 letter writers.

Also, let's recognize our other loyal Crew Chief, Bob, for helping coordinate the campaign, drafting labels, providing envelopes, and hand written letters to one of the VPs, whom he had met before.

I had my work picnic today, just got back. No XT, I wish! I'm still hopeful that they'll give me that Premium 5 speed shown at the NY Show.

Sorry That I've been too busy the last couple of days to do more than "quick peek". Your return is GREAT news to all loyal Subie lovers, even those of us who are "Subaru challenged". You were sorely missed.

Bob, did you mean to say "It comes with an inflatable spare?"

Or is the Touareg spare one of those solid things, hehe.

There's a saying that "it costs 5 times more to get a new customer than to retain an existing customer ".

I believe Subaru has done a lot to retain customers by bringing Patti back to these boards. (And the word of mouth will probably bring a lot of new customers, too.)

    Welcome back Patti!

Even though she was on the CHAT the other night, she and SOA need to work out the details as to her return to the Edmunds forums. So, as I understand it it, she's not yet "fully" back yet. We'll just have to wait and see...

The long and short of it is, yes, your letters of support had a big impact on SOA. So, a HUGE thanks to everyone who sent one. :)

Patti: Welcome back. Hope I never need your liason btw. Subaru & myself, but nice to know you're there, and it's certainly cool to watch other's issues get resolved trhanks to your help.

Ross: Good to see you in here once in awhile! E-mail me when you can! (revised address in profile)

Update: Dad's moved into assisted living & loving it so far. Stress level is down a notch. Hoping the light at the end of the tunnel isn't an oncoming freight train!

Sun, fun, family & jet skis this weekend.

    Cheers!

    Sounds like fun, Paul.

I'm about to take my daughter to try outs for some Sesame Street filming. It would be cool if she actually appeared on the show, but we're going just for kicks.

Oh man, he was a nice guy. Some may recall he actually joined this very group in a chat a little over a year ago. Say it ain't so!

He was funny. I asked what the biggest difference was, running in the US Rally, and he said "No Giraffes".

We joked back and forth about the lack of course notes, even. Tragic irony.

    May he RIP. :-(

PS We also had a chat with Ramana Lageman, and Karl Schieble sent us that poster. But the bigger chat was with Mark.

said they hit a tree, that was 8' around, somewhere between 80 – 130 mph. I'm sure they didn't suffer, as death must have been instantaneous.

The chat with Mark Lovell is here. His comment about trees is especially sad in hindsight.

Rally.subaru.com has a little bit up on the loss.

Oh heavens, I had forgotten that I had actually conversed directly with Mark during that chat. Thank you for linking the transcript, Steve. I was saddened at their loss but am now sadder still.

My condolences to his and Roger Freeeman's families and those in the Subaru and Prodrive organisations that knew him.

I hope sincerely that although the grieving will go on that SRTUSA and Prodrive will continue the effort. Sad as Mark's and Roger's loss is, those risks are inherent in rallying. A large part of Subaru's expansion and increase in popularity here in the US can be directly traced to its successes in the motorsport.

I also hope that Mark's and Roger's deaths along with those of the spectators at the Sawmill Rally earlier this year, do not set back the growth of the sport in this country. That's a subject outside the scope of this forum so I'll stop here.

Found that chat transcript, too, but Steve beat me to it, posting the link. It was back in November 2001.

On a lighter note, I took my daughter to the audition for Sesame Street taping. She was asked to read a jingle about Corn Pops, "I gotta have my pops!".

Instead, she said "I don't like cereal" and was having none of the director's baloney. That's the type of assertive independence I hope Subaru can keep with parent GM.

I found this on another board. It is a bit long but full of good info on why disc brakes "warp". It also goes into a bit about pad types and material composition plus some excellant advice on bedding in new pads and rotors.

    http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm

This one does a good job with the pros & cons of different rotor types/styles and their inherent problems with regard to warpage.

    Enjoy!

    Interesting read on those brakes.

juice - Happy to contribute once in a while.

I wonder where one could safely do those repeated 60 - 5 mph stops that they recommend for properly bedding in new brakes. Any police witnessing this behavior would certainly pull you over.

It would be nice if they did this for you at the dealer prior to picking up a new car.

It's not really practical. I guess you could "take it easy" and lightly coast to a stop the first few times.

    -juice
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I always do repeated 40-5 stops on my motorcycles and cars to bed in brakes and have never once been stopped by the polizei.

60 MPH roads are too busy, and not interfering with other cars is my #1 priority.

My hubby's Accord is already 1 week on the internet, 2 days in the paper -- no takers yet whatsoever. Price too high? All we want is KBB private party, and the car's still under extended warranty, with new tires, new brakes, freshly smogged and 90K-mi serviced... grrr. Economy I guess :-(
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yep, the used car market is very soft.

I saw an AWD Saturn Vue in the paper today, an '03 with 15k miles, for $12,995. Talk about a steep dive in depreciation! Those start at over $19 grand!

    Kate,

Have you tried listing it on Craigslist? A few of my friends had luck selling their vehicle there. Most recently, one friend sold their Camry Solara to a Toyota dealer in Walnut Creek. They got KBB for it too.

    It's www.craigslist.org.

Accord is there 1 week already. I had 3 emails and 2 calls, but no lookers...

OTOH, I have a junior opening in my group, and I'm buried under resumes, like 300 per vacancy or so... job market must be horrible out there.
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
both our Loyales ('92 and '93) flew out of hands within 1 week, for a full KBB private party price.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
I got alot from the Stoptech article - thanks! Very timely as I am having a case of TV (thickness variation - won't ever call it 'warp' again...) at the present time. I was going to block sand the high spot, and would have used the wrong paper if I had not read the page first.

    Steve
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think that generally it's easier to sell a car at a lower price, because the buyer usually pays cash and doesn't need to obtain financing.
