paisan: I don't think anyone here is going to get between a "made guy" and his appetite! Have all the Rally Bread you can eat, however you want it!

Thanks for the heads-up, Kyle. I'll have to add a post about my cousin's '88 Loyale, which is stil running. She sold it to her nephew (on the other side of the family) and it just refuses to die.

    Welcome back titles...

I'm eating some Ralley Bread w/Chicken Parm as we speak!

Hmm, just what is Rally Bread?

By definition, it has to be spicy, steamy hot, and dipped in mud (gravy) sideways.

Plus you have to eat it fast! ;-)

    oops, wrong board! ;)

Jamie was saying how crappy the Phase I EJ25 is because everyone is blowing cylinders at 50-60K. hope I don't...

Did it yesterday. I'm now at 1042 miles on the odometer. Loving every minute of it. I'm having more and more people come up to me and compliment my car. Last Sat. a teenage female friend of a friend asked me if it was a WRX and how lucky I was to have it. The word is definitely out there to be sure!

forgive me if this is a much repeated question. i am planning a trip to Assateague Island in Maryland/Virginia for a weekend or two this summer. I notice that they allow vehicles on the beach there, of course at a price. We have a '01 OBW and my obvious question is if anyone thinks that driving on the beach there with our OB will be a problem? Any and all experiences with beach driving would be appreciated.

Stephen, now you can start driving it as it was intended to be driven. Have fun!

Stephen- Like, you're so totally far out man! You're the bomb!!!! (sorry... couldn't resist)

Jeff- As long as there aren't any really big ruts in the sand and you air down your tires you should be okay. Also, a full-size spare is required for some beaches and a good idea regardless (If you get a flat without one you're stuck). I'm sure Juice will weigh-in with additional advice.

Not only is a full-size spare often required (certainly recommended!), I believe Assateague Island also requires a 25' tow strap, a jack, a shovel, and a 2x6 (or something close to that) piece of wood to place your jack on, should you need it.

I would contact Assateague Island (National seashore) authorities directly, to be sure.

BTW, I also bring an air compressor with me when I travel on the beach. Finally, be aware of high and low tides. If you travel at low tide, and come back at high tide, your earlier path (or any path) may not be there.

    That's "da bomb," Poindexter. >;')

    Jeff-

Bob's right. Call 'em. You need half a hardware store to go in there.

Where do I pick it up? My wife sometimes says I look like a kewpie when I wake up in the morning; tossing from side to side leaves my male pattern baldness 'do in a Kewpie-like cone on my forehead.

Been away a while so missed the meltdown. Another thing I missed was the Forester oxygen sensor recall notice - I never received one in the mail. Can I still take the car in for the recall work even without the hard copy notice?

...has anyone here with a Phase I blown a cylinder? Or am I just being paranoid?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Never heard of a complaint like that. Piston slap on the early Phase Is, but even then they never failed outright.

Driving on the beach? I'd suggest trying it first with someone who has had experience driving there. There is some seriously soft, deep sand in some places on Assateague.

I went in a friend's Explorer and that thing was bottoming out left and right. There is a long, "highway" to get to the less crowded beaches you're sure to want to visit. Without a low range, they may not even let you in (you do have to pay, BTW).

That said, if you do get in, air down to about 18psi. Drive smoothly, keeping your momentum and do not stop on the really soft stuff. No sharp turns, sudden braking or accelerating. Park facing down so when you start again you can get moving.

I drove down in Rodanthe, Outer Banks in my Forester, though I had bigger-than-stock tires and about 8.2" clearance. My Forester is also lighter than your Outback by a couple hundred pounds, so it's less likely to sink. An auto tranny would actually have been better suited than my manual.

It was quite a hoot though. You can see some photos here:

    http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1400062&a=11264448&f=0

Photos 11-14 were all at the OBX.

You've also got a better angle of approach and departure on the Forester, than the Outback has. There's less chance of the front and rear overhangs getting hung up.

    Sorry - I've been tied up for a few days (oh - beHAVE) - - -

Ed - call us at 1-800-SUBARU3 to confirm if your Sube is effected by the recall. As long as their is a campaign number associated with your VIN, you can get it done.

    Thanks!

Hey all you Soob heads !

Sorry I've been AWOL lately but between our French visitor, weddings, and WORK !! .. I,ve been pretty busy. I check in every day to keep track of "whatz up"(that's for Loosh) but haven't had time to post. Mike-S .. I can only say I'm glad you didn't convince me not to buy the Rex. Juice - the amusement ride is waiting!

Maybe it's because I'm not 21 anymore, but the handling limits of the WRX are at a point that scares the hell out of me :) I like it .. but it scares me.

Patti - into bondage eh ? Thanks for the tip .. I'm at the dealers now .. using their computer .. nice touch of customer service huh?

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
Hutch, you observations about the handling limits are probably spot-on. The Impreza has always handled so well as to lull the driver into a false sense of security, and then before you know it you've gone to far.

Explore those limits carefully-- I recommend an autocross or driving school. I fully agree that you can have all kinds of fun on the street and never get seriously close to the car's limits.

Not that Passover is done with, I don't have to eat Rally Matzah (I get a FLAT every time)...I can eat Rally Bread !!!!!!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yeah even worse is having Rally Matzah and finding out that even the spare Rally Matzah is flat! Being a Guinea, I don't have to worry about Rally Matzah though. Rally Spinich Bread is good stuff too, and Garlic Rally Bread w/melted cheese is outstanding as well.

UK descent (Cornwall region), I rather favor Rally Pastys. Heat them up in the morning, stick them in your shirt (like the miners used to do), and eat them for lunch.

I know it has been discussed many times before, but I have a quick question regarding the spare tire in the OB. I was talking to a Subaru rep at the NY auto show last night about the OB, and how it would be nice to have a full size spare. She said that it will accomodate a full size spare, if you remove the tool tray just above the spare. Anyone have any experience with that? If it does work, I may replace that tire with the white on the side showing thru with a new one, and use the banges up one as a full size spare.
BTW went to the show with a co-worker of mine. He said that the Subaru reps seemed more informed, and enthused about their vehicles than any other manufacturers display. I know the Cadillac people seemed to blow me off (I guess at almost 40 I'm still too young for them to take seriously.). As a matter of fact, most of the representatives seemed to be tired and infifferent of the whole thing.

Since, I see by your profile, you own an 2000 Outback, I suggest you take one of your tires off, and try to place it in your spare tire well.

I've been told the 225/60x16 tires on the current generation Outbacks are too large to fit in there. In Australia, and in most other markets, the Outback comes with a smaller 215/60x16 tire—and that does fit in the spare tire well. In fact, the Australian Outback (and probably other market Outbacks) comes standard with a full-size spare.

And, yes... this spare tire issue is a real "hot button topic" for many of us on this board. BTW, USA-spec Foresters do come with a full-size spare.

I also loved the WRX, but found myself liking the sedan over the wagon. The seating was comfortable front and back, and I have to agree with everyone here that the front seats are nice! After seeing the car I can see the attraction, and am jealous of those of you have gone for one.

    Bob,

I know this is a hot issue here. I told the rep that this is a complaint that many owners of the OB have. That is when she told me about taking out the tool tray. BTW - another gripe on the board here of lack of a light by the ignition key seems to be corrected on the new H6 VDC OB Sedan.

I guess that would be a good breakfast, but wouldn't rallyists from the UK want a scones course for breakfast? :)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, right, Hutch! We know the truth - you've been playing with the Rex and hanging out with French AND American women! :oD

Colin: there's my angle - I plan to autocross for safety's sake! ;-)

I'm beach-bound this weekend, so another road trip coming up for Sandy.

One of the guys coming up just got a new Jeep Wrangler, so we'll see if we end up checking out the North Bethany beaches or not. His is new so he may be babying it for now.

A.J. I'm puzzeled. You say that like it's a bad thing.

Just got back from N. Bethany last weekend. A friend has a place in Seabreak .. Oh La La .. ah I mean .. nice place :)

At the dealer just now (long lunch!) and they had the red WRX sedan in the showroom with a sticker adding $1500 advertising fee on top of MSRP! So me asking below invoice for my lowly Outback should balance, right?

    -Greg
  • blaneblane Member Posts: 2,017
    nygreg:

That $1500 isn't an advertising fee. It's statutory rape. They used to call it Additional Dealer Markup. Shop elsewhere.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
Hmm, I wonder what he'll drive? Heh heh...an Outback, of course...a green one too. Anyone want to try the same stunt in their OB? ;-) Check out the trailer at http://www.crocodiledundeeinla.com

Anyone have trouble with their subscriptions lately? For the last few days, I wasn't getting any new messages on my subscriptions. When I checked my profile, all of the Subaru Crew discussions had been removed! How strange!

    Ken,

Here's what happened, according to Karen (host).

#21 in It's Not the End of Subaru Crew

I had to re-subscribe to all of them as well.

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Thanks, Dan. I'm glad Edmunds is on top of this problem. When I resubscribed to Subaru Crew, all the old acrhived stuff is showing up as unread. Grrrrr.

I was also experiencing problems posting yesterday. Anyone else?

Anyone know the interior dimensions of the base OB wagon? A friend of mine has something 40" x 34" x 36", and I'm not sure if iti will fit through the back.

Thanks, and I got Drive last week also.

If you do not get Drive within another day or so, give us a call. I've been trying to get some extra copies for "mailing" issues. I have some on my desk and we can get them out to you.

    Thanks!

Got mine two days ago. Nice job, SOA! It seems to have more content than the previous issues.
