@graphicguy - since you asked, here's what I posted on CCBA just the other day:

Since I've made a couple of payments and put a couple thousand miles on my Tacoma, I've got a little more to say about it.

It is completely different than anything else I've ever owned/leased, but I really LOVE it. It is well screwed together. No squeaks or rattles. The ride is still on the stiff side. I'm used to it though. Maybe the suspension has settled.

It doesn't beg to be driven like the Infiniti. The Toyota V6 is no slouch though. The passing power is there when I need it.

Most days I'm driving around with an empty bed. The few times I've really needed it, it has come in very handy. Parking hasn't been as much of an issue as I thought. MPG has been decent. I'm averaging between 17 & 19 mpg on RUG.

The clock is ticking. Less than 2 years to go ;)

There is a supermarket chain here that I need to learn never to buy 2 things at: raspberries, and blackberries. The blackberries are less of a problem as I don't really care for them that much, but I like raspberries and the lifespan on a clamshell pack of those bought at this market chain seems to be no more than 36 hours before they go moldy.

So, while I was busy trying to make enough so I can retire like the rest of you folks, I was driving down a fairly busy thoroughfare about 5 miles from where I live. They had built an Aldis. I have heard about these grocery stores, and know they are somehow related to Trader Joe’s.

I pulled in. Got some Organic Milk, Organic Eggs, some tomato/basil wraps for my lunches. In and out for about $8. Just giving everything a perfunctory look, I’d say they’re about 25%-30% cheaper, like-for-like, than Krogers. Not huge and not offering the butchers a Kroger offers. But, for everyday items, pretty darned good stuff at very nice prices. While I only had a few items, I guess if you need a grocery cart, you have to leave a 25¢ deposit to use one.
    Welcome back GG.

About Aldi's, I'm not too far from one and when I go to one of the Home Depot's, they are almost side by side. We have gotten a few things there and a while back I decided to try their brand of Italian dressing so I picked up their Zesty Italian just because. I think it is the best Italian dressing I've ever had and I've had plenty of it in my day, believe me. You being Italian, I'd be interested what you think of it, if you're willing to try it like I did and it's only a little over a buck, I think. If somehow you don't like it, Edmunds will give you your money back. In fact, I think Edmunds has a double your money back policy for long time members like you. So you really don't have anything to lose.

You said in a recent post that you are "on the sidelines". Yeah right, you being on the sidelines is like the rest of us being in the game.

Fortunately my nearest town (Heber, AZ) is too small to support a HD or Lowes, but has a big Ace Hardware that meets all my needs. Now I use Ace when I'm down in the Phoenix area as well, to avoid packing that lunch and spending hours looking for stuff.

Right up the road from our campground near the Jersey shore there is an Ace Hardware. What a nice, clean friendly store.

I picked up quite a few things from there during our setup last year. So much closer than the HD or Lowe's both of which are 15 miles or so away. You pay a little more but the convenience makes up for it.

Back at home, there is an HD or Lowe's 5 minutes from my house in two different directions.

Stick...we will get the fridge. Lowes price is similar to everyone else's including Home Depot. But a guy at tennis (they all told me since you want a new fridge just buy the thing) said Lowes gives you 5% off if you use their credit card. We are going to Lowes this afternoon.

Since I'm a veteran I get 10% off at both Loews and Home Depot. At Lowe's I get the discount even on aplliances that are on sale, across the board, no exceptions. At Home Depot it applies too but not always but most of the time. At least that's the way it used to be.

    Comedians. All of you.

But yes, my wife is a runner and loves doing races. She suggested I sign up for a 5k. My response was that I hated running for free, why would I pay to do it?

I do 3 or 4 5Ks a year....all to raise money for different charities. I wouldn’t call what I do running, though. More something akin to a stroll and and the kind of trot you do when it’s raining and you’re parked 20 feet from the front door.
That's different - my wife does a lot that really seem to be raising money to cover the cost of the race and swag that they do. I do Komen for the Cure every year and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation walk.

Counter depth is very nice. You’ll be happy with its better footprint if you have a smaller kitchen like we do.

The only thing is, it is odd that you pay more for a smaller fridge....like a premium for it. The salesman said it is like a little sports car....you pay extra. I said, I know what you mean, the fancier and higher the cost of a dinner....the more the restaurant charges!

But yes, I think in this case small will make the kitchen open up more...and the fridge is very bright and well lit so is great inside. More fridges should be counter deep.
Just like cars, the reason they charge more is because the counter depth is more popular and they can get away with it. We also paid more for counter depth because that is what we wanted. Friends of ours recently built a new home, and simply made their counters deeper in order to avoid buying a smaller counter depth fridge, thus getting the larger fridge and still keeping it flush with the counters. Probably cost a lot more though.

What did you end up buying?

Got the fridge this afternoon at Lowes. .....I know you have all been waiting to hear what happened!
I would have been OK with the $900 model, that is about the same as what we have now. For $100 more you get much nicer shelves, lighter and brighter inside. But, Mrs D really wanted the counter depth model, it is 4 inches less deep, so doesn't stick out much more than the counter. That one cost $1300, and I asked if I could get their CC and get 5% off. The first delivery date available is DEC 5th. A good thing I didn't wait for it to conk out...3 weeks to get a fridge! Sales guy takes my info and says I will get my card in the mail in 7 to 10 days, then I can come in and order. Then we won't get it until mid December.

I said, this is crazy, every other store I go to they give me a CC and I can buy the item right now. He sends me to customer service to get a temporary card. Credit company they use won't approve me....first time in 72 years I have been refused an item on credit. We go over and over my information, she doesn't understand why my Canadian SIN won't come up, and why am I buying a fridge if I am in Canada? I explain I am standing in a store in Florida, that we have a home in Florida, I have a VISA card and Kohls CC on me, what is the problem? She can't approve it....so I ask for the manager. Mrs D says we will buy it somewhere else.....I say to the manager if you give me 5% off and let me put it on my VISA I'll buy it now. He says sure....and we write it up and it gets delivered Dec 6th.

    $1,299.00 Was $1,699.00

    Good!

There's a lure to the nicer shelves, etc., unless buying basic and don't care. I understand about the
counter depth. Outs sticks out but we need the room.

Did you get the 5-year warranty? That saved us on the service calls for the circuit board that zapped out. And no charge for service call to find out the seeping water was from the plastic waterline to the back of fridge.

Warranty is probably a good idea on a fridge....not something you want to take back to get repaired. We didn't even think about it....just glad to get it done, cost me an hour of my life.

I wrote to head office....if they offer me a credit card I will tell them, I'll take one if they give me another 5% off.

Lowes is closing 30 stores in Canada. Our garbage disposal unit was $90 at Home Depot and Lowes, it was also $90 at Amazon but it was delivered to our door the same day we ordered it. Why drive 30 minutes to Lowes?
Why drive 30 minutes to Lowe's? For one thing, it supports local jobs.

Amazon has its place in my world for sure. But as someone who works for a small, family run business I much prefer to shop at a brick and mortar store, even if it is a "big box," national chain.

My 10 year old son, Henry is the goalie for his Squirt hockey team. This is the 3rd season he's been using the chest protector that the league provides. Over the past couple of weeks he's been complaining that he's starting to feel it when he stops certain shots. He's also taken 2-3 hard shots that have left a few bruises. With a tournament coming up this weekend in Springfield, MA I decided to look into getting him his own chest protector.

I called a local, pro shop that is run out of a rink in the next town over (Darien). I spoke to someone and explained to him my son's needs. He told me they have 2 different models as well as told me the pros and cons of each. Next, the big question; how much?

    $150.00

The guy then tells me he's open until 7:00 PM. I thank him and tell him I'll be by later.

Next I go online to check out some of the reviews. They are good. Prices are all over the place. Some sites want $189, $229, and I even found it for $130. I left work early, picked up my son at home, then drove 25 minutes (7 miles). While I was there, I got both my son's skates sharpened. He tried on the chest protector. The guy there remembered that I had called earlier in the day and made sure it fit my son properly. Then I drove home 20 minutes and had dinner.

To me, the time and extra money was well spent.

    I’m feeling the pressure.

My Ford dealer is now offering a new 2019 Mustang for $479/mo 0% for 60 months with my trade in. A 2019 GT base lists for about $36,000 and tax brings it up to about $39k. $479/mo for 60 months is about $29k.

So calculating the difference means they are offering me $10k for my trade. According to CarMax my car is worth at least $20k. These are approximations but I feel insulted. Do people still fall for the monthly payment pitch?

I feel pressure also - usually just before I use the lavatory! 😛😛😜

Just to clarify....we try to support local businesses too, but, they have to offer some kind of extra service or knowledge to make them sustainable.
At home I get my tennis gear at an independent guy. I could save 20% buying shoes online, but, I want him to be in business if I have a question or want advice.
We have an independent Home Hardware store in town back home, though a Lowes and HD aren't much further. Rather go there, they have knowledgeable staff that are usually more available.
When we started our book business I could only get my books into independent retail locations....they supported me so I try to support them.
I prefer a good independent retailer when it makes sense. But, if I ordered the garbage disposal unit from Home Depot a block away it takes 7 days to arrive and I go over there to pick it up, Lowes is a 30 minute drive each way and very dangerous on Highway 301 which is like a drag strip. I can order from Amazon and it was at my door 6 hours later....same price.

I bought at Lowes because of the 5%, but Lowes had about 40 fridges on display, HD about 20. Is that typical?

Not to change the subject, but is anyone here a runner?

I've had a pretty steady workout routine for years now, but have always avoided running like the plague because...well...I hate it. I recently started about a month ago to give myself a new challenge and it has been brutal building up my endurance (and I was far from out of shape).

I'm at the point where I can about 2.75 miles, but I'm having a serious amount of trouble getting myself up over 3 miles on my longer run days - either my lower back starts hurting or I just don't have the lung capacity to keep running. I happen to think its probably mental since I feel reasonably confident if someone were chasing me, I'd probably find the strength - its just figuring out to unlock it. Any tips/tricks?

After 55 years of hating/avoiding running, I became an elite world class runner at age 55. And, by that I mean a pretty, young green eyed young woman asked me if I wanted to join her charitable 5K run team. My mind laughingly screamed no, but my mouth said yes (see: pretty, green eyed young woman). Did the "Couch to 5K" training regimen, finished the 5K (called the "Heartbreak Hill 5K," gee that should have tipped me off!). And have run ever since, including running my first and only half marathon a couple of years ago. Anywho...

I recommend the "Couch to 5K" training regimen, follow it to the letter. Make sure you have a good pair of running shoes, don't have to spend millions, but don't get the Wallyworld specials. I've been running in Brooks and Asics, Brooks a bit lighter. Try to find a running buddy or group, much more enjoyable. Warm up cold muscles, stretch warm muscles. Hydrate. Beware of calves, I never knew I had them until I started running, now wear compression sleeves. The only way to do it is to do it. But, don't over do it. I only run 4-5 miles/3-4 days/week. Want my knees to continue to want to be a part of my body for many years.

Speaking of local retailers and amazon. Mrs D ordered canned sweet potatoes from Amazon this morning. The one's at Publix, which is an excellent store have sugar....these have no sugar. At Publix they were $3 something a can, she ordered from Amazon this morning, 12 cans for $20. We could watch where the delivery person was on the computer...knew when they would be arriving to the minute! How can a retailer match that?

Now she can make a sweet pie with pineapple casserole. Only downside is now I have more boxes to cut up.

While it is slow here one more thing about these stores and refrigerators. You usually buy a refrigerator because the one you own isn't working. So who wants to wait 3 weeks for a fridge to be delivered. Can't they keep one or two in a warehouse so they could get it to you in 2 or 3 days. Same when the washing machine went....3 weeks, so we took the floor models. Usually people need these items right away.

Even if the manufacturer stored them, can't they get it to Lowes warehouse in a day or two....and then Lowes turn it around in a day?

Amazon sells the same fridge for a few $100 less, but how do you set it up and who takes away the old one? But, they would probably get it to you in a day or two.

Farmer, people fall for all kinds of schemes, so my guess is yes they do. Your numbers are probably a little off because you are not factoring in interest, which can be pretty significant if they are ripping you off on the interest rate. at 6%, that payment is about a $25,000 loan, so that would be more like $14k trade. still not enough, that is for sure!

The deal offer was 0% for 60 months. But I see your point, they’re eating the potential interest which currently at my credit union is about 2.7% for that loan period.

No matter how you look at it the deal is a no go.

I understand about driving a school bus......I would have to be desperate for a job, I'd rather work in a McDonalds. Speaking of which, I desperately needed a coffee yesterday so stopped at a McDs. Thought I would get a bagel or something small to go with the coffee......all they showed on the signs were Breakfast sandwiches, 800 calories and all were over $5! What is going on in the world?

That thing about floor joists I still don't get.....I know nothing at all about house building.

Lack of knowledge on a subject has never stopped you from commenting on that subject. That post was from 2013, I guess some things never change. B)

There aren't too many topics I don't know something about. I never liked learning anything in depth. I am a generalist, I like to know a little bit about a lot of topics. Makes me such a knowledgeable well rounded person :D
If everyone who posts here was held to strict accuracy on the topic they post about this would be an empty forum. By expressing opinions that are factual to our knowledge and reading the responses we can learn where we’re wrong from others. Sometimes we educate others as well.

Not knowing everything never stopped me from offering an opinion. Just ask my wife. :p

LOL. I’m guessing that’s a different kind of pressure. Unless you blow the toilet off the floor probably less expensive too. :p

    More auto jobs in US.

GM is building a new plant in the northwest area around Dayton not far away.

They are selling more big engine trucks.
The Duramax plant, near the closed Moraine assembly plant now Fuyao auto glass manufacturing, has been enlarged for more production of those large diesels.

So we get jobs at a new plant to build more blocks and heads for the Duramax, which go to the Moraine plant for production!

More jobs in this area for auto supply that were lost a few years back.

Whitehall Police Dash camera shows man take stolen Whitehall cruiser on 20-minute joyride.

Reynoldsburg police chased the suspect in his vehicle all the way to East Main Street in Whitehall. Whitehall police said suspect got out of his car and ran into a wooded area.

While officers were looking for suspect, police say he got out of the woods and stole a Whitehall police cruiser as the dash cam recorded the event.

About 8:58 suspect is trapped in a cul de sac. So he starts doing doughnuts as police block his escape.

Less than 1 minute later the suspect escapes by driving on the grass.

Finally after 20 minutes of cop car chased by other cop cars the suspect abandons the Blues Mobile and was arrested at the office of the Cook County Assessor Grant Avenue in Columbus.

    $1,299.00 Was $1,699.00
    SAVE 23% thru 12/05/2019
Counter depth design - add additional kitchen space with styling that fits virtually flush with the countertop
Exterior ice and water dispenser with EveryDrop™ filtration -access fresh filtered water and ice without ever opening the refrigerator door
In-Door-Ice® storage - get an extra full shelf in the freezer with an ice bin that's been moved to the door

I grew up in Darien. We lived there until I was 14 (in 1969) right on the Post Rd. in the Noroton area when we moved to the "country" (South Salem, NY). I remember riding bikes on I-95 when they were building it.
I was there about 10 years ago. WOW has it changed and gotten a lot busier.

@nyccarguy ....I was wondering how you’d feel going from the Infiniti to the Tacoma. Sounds like it’s going well. Great to hear.

@jmonroe1 ...thanks. Believe it or not, I missed you guys.

I have tried Aldi’s Italian Dressing. I like it. Matter of fact, I’ve been back to their store a couple of times to get their bread, Organic Eggs, Organic milk, some dry roasted peanuts, sandwich cheeses and meats, canned soups, and some other sundry misc items. Thought there products were every bit as good as ANY brand I bought at Krogers. Plus, there was some substantial savings over shopping at Krogers or Fresh Market.

Not huge selections, and they would certainly do well to have more than 1 cashier lane open at a time. But, I bring my own bags and am off to the races.

The one I shopped in was new. I’ve heard some of them which were built in pre-existing buildings aren’t necessarily in the best geographic areas. I won’t make a special trip, but if I’m in the area, I certainly will shop there.

Our new Whirlpool fridge had a red light come on telling us to change the filter. It was just about 6 months to the day. Will get some on Amazon.com and wait till that icon comes back on the fridge to replace it.

I get mine from this place. Never been disappointed, and saved a few bucks on the crazy filter pricing from fridge manufacturers.

Thank you! These are all things that I have been working, so at least I know I'm on the right track. I have no interest in doing a distance run at this point - I don't have anything to prove to anyone and I, too, would like to preserve my knees.

I've been running roughly 4 times week - one longer run where I try and push towards/over 3, and the others right around 2-2.5 miles. The other days I'm either doing low impact cardio on the elliptical or lifting weights.

No, I am more like Einstein. He got bored in school because his mind wandered onto other things...like the theory of relativity. That's why I can't delve too deeply into any one topic. ;)

Good luck, just back from a 5 miler with the boys, we run 4.5-5 miles every MWF at work. Have an official quiz, too, which keeps your mind off the fact that you're running. I won the quiz with such answers as Sal Maglie, 6 and West Germany! No car questions, unfortunately.

I must admit that I am amazed that after a lifetime of avoiding/hating running, I can now easily run 5+ miles, I NEVER thought I'd run a half! Best part of the half, ~$110,000 was raised that day for local food pantries. Not to mention running on a beautiful, cold New England November morn, a mile or so along the ocean. Won all the quizzes during that run, too!
