OEC is EMT with a wind chill factor :)

Lookout is blessed by location - snows earlier, later, & drier most seasons. Not the tallest vertical around here, nor does it have the longest runs & trails, but it's a family-oriented facility, their patrol scheduling is flexible, and I get to ski midweeks when the crowds are non-existent.

Here's some info: (Steve, you can peek too!)

I managed a couple of hours on opening day at Bogus this morning Paul. Conditions were, shall we say, early season, but fun and the sun was bright (it was 7 degrees F at the 10 am start but hit 20 by the time I left to find the ibuprofen and hot tub). I may get down to Snowbird or Park City Friday if things pan out. :shades:

Conditions at Lookout are terrific - over 6 feet at summit, and more on the way tomorrow. Don't need the rock skis anymore, and it's not even December!

I'm up for another training day Friday, then home for 1)ibuprofen, 2) quick shower & change of clothes, then 3) Tony Romas for dinner - Daniel & Gayle's birthdays this weekend - they chose (I suggested, but they chose! really!) :)

    Cheers!

Those speeds are crazy. Fastest I've been in a ski boat is maybe 42mph, and that feels like 120 in a car.

    I can't imagine 60, much less 70+.

To ski we used to go about 28-33 or so.

Not sure if I can make it, as the Ravens are playing the Bengals. GO RAVENS!

I've skied behind a early 90s Baja 320 with twin 502s, exactly what you're talking about. That boat was later (mis)used by the dealership's owner to enter the Long Beach-Catalina ski race. They took second in class behind a 38' Scarab with twin Lamborghini V12s.

Anyway, it's a rough life skiing anywhere near 60 or 70. I'm definitely not good enough to do it, nevermind have fun at it.

If you're after pure speed though I think you're going about it all wrong-- get a tunnel hull, say an Eliminator. Fastest boat I've ever been on was a 27' Eliminator tunnel hull with three two-stroke V6 outboards. We did over 110mph at Lake Havasu, and I can honestly say that I was terrified.

Oops. Sorry to be so far off topic.

At those speeds if you fall while skiing I'm sure it could be lethal. Hitting the water would be pretty much like hitting solid ground.

Any boxer powered boats out there, to bring this back on topic?

Sorry, I had to go off topic once more -- you don't ski at those high speeds! The hot rod ski boats just happen to go that fast without a skier in tow.

I used to water ski at 28mph on the nose. One time in college my friends were goofing around and cranked up the speed while I was skiing. I eventually let go of the rope and coasted when it got too scary. I think they said I held on to about 45mph or so. They thought it was a lot funnier than I did!
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
You do need north of 35mph to barefoot ski from a tow line, though you can barefoot off a side boom at 30mph or less usually.

Cats are the way to go for all out speed. In the 33 Footer I'm mostly looking for the weight and deep v for stability to cut the 8-10ft rollers and the chop we get in the bay. Also the 33 footer has a nice big cabin for overnighting.

To keep it on topic, haven't seen any boxers in marine use yet.

I'm in Salt Lake City for a couple of days having driven the '97 Outback down from Boise. We went to Snowbird this morning and hit an inch or two of fresh snow on the last 6 miles to the resort. The new all season Toyo's I put on a couple of months ago did good, even on the 9% grade section. I had chains available so technically I was legal, depending on which warning sign you believed.

Thanks for the tire rec, Ken. :)

Lots of Subies in evidence in the parking lot.

Lots of Subarus around here also. Still using the Blizzaks for winter tires. Got me through a 22" snow fall last year. The Blizzaks go on in November and come off in March (BFG Traction T/A's go on at that time).

You're lucky - real snow. Most of our snow is that artifical stuff which can become boiler plate really fast (gotta have sharp edges).

We had six to eight inches of snow predicted in this last storm that "shut down" Chicago. Usually when Chicago gets it, we get it in spades on the other side of Lake Michigan.

This time, it seems to have gone right over .. around .. something ..

we've only had a couple of flurries and dustings out of this system .... so far

Daughter called from Texas to see if we were snowed in. Dallas got more snow than we did!
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
That storm dumped about 17" here in SE Wisconsin. Blizzard conditions throughout the morning. And the snow is here to stay for a while, single digit temps last night and tonight.

ski racers most definitely go 60+ mph. they wear helmets of course, in response to Juice's last post about it.

Psssh, we got nuthin. They said we might get a dusting, but nope.

I can't believe many people in Texas saw snow and we still haven't.

Wow that's nutz colin. I thought driving at 70mph in the ocean with waves and stuff was bad, let alone skiing behind it!

  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
we have snow ... with more predicted ...

    6-10" ... last week when they predicted that .. we got maybe .. 1/2 " .. lol
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Could it be?

My brother says he can pay me back that loan in full, so early next year, when I get back from Brazil, I may actually go car shopping.

The irony in all this is that my Forester is running as good as ever, and I feel like it's a waste to trade it in. Wifey is really pushing for a bigger trip vehicle, given our many 3+ hour road trips.

Guys once again I am asking for your prayers for my family, My younger brother still living in Ireland was diagnosed with inoperable small cell lung cancer about six months ago.

Last week he was told he has a year at the outside and probably less, my own doctor thinks this is an extremely generous estimate, the year from hell just keeps going and going, as a very close and dear friend lost his fight with cancer in Sept.

    Cheers Pat.

Pat, so sorry to hear the news. My prayers are indeed with you and your family.

This is turing out to being a really sad holiday season. Two days ago I got word from an old high school buddy that one of our classmates had passed. Today I get another e-mail from him saying his own younger sister just died yesterday of lung cancer.

    It's gotta get better...

    Pat-

My mother-in-law was diagnosed with the same thing at the end of July. Her doctor refuses to give her a prognosis, saying that in her experience, most patients make it to whatever the prognosis is, then pass. Anyways, she has just finished chemo last week (6 rounds total) and will now be on maintenance drugs (which, by the way, her provider doesn't want to pay for  )

She is a non smoker, so the doctors feel she may do ok on cheo as her lungs are fundamentally stronger than a smoker's. Of course, not being a smoker means it took a while for the diagnosis despite being symptomatic for well over a year. No one was looking for cancer.

So we're hoping for the best. She's lost all her hair and claims to feel good. I certainly hope we get a year with her, and I'm secretly hoping for a good bit more than that.

Many people on chemo or recovering from chemo find that drinking wheatgrass juice seems to improve their energy. I take this stuff myself since being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder (hemolytic anemia). I can't say for sure it's the wheatgrass juice but since taking it my immune system has not gone out of whack and I've been medication free for 17 months now. I get it at www.wheatgrassjuice.ca but you may be able to get it locally...many juice bars will make it for you. You can even grow wheatgrass and make your own. As I said, I'm not trying to give any type of false hope, just saying many people find it helps them in different ways. Just do an internet search on wheatgrass juice.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Loosh, my brother has already had massive treatments of Chemo. and Radiation they can't give him any more, apparently he had so much chemo that his bone marrow is shot. They tried some sort of injections, I don't even know if they were experimental or not. He had 7 injections every couple of days over a three week period, but there was no improvement

Like you say though, a prognosis I believe is useless when it is your time it is your time.

    Cheers Pat.
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
ooof. How long ago was the diagnosis, and how long was the chemo?
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
I'm sorry Pat and Loosh. I will keep your family members in my prayers this season.

I end up taking care of a lot of cancer patients in their last months of life. Unfortunately, we just don't have it yet when it comes to cures for many people, but a lot of research is being done to get there.

Make sure the doctors keep him comfortable- we at least are pretty good at that here in the 21st century and there really is no reason for people to suffer greatly, nor have to worry about suffering.

    Take care, Pat.

Loosh, He was only diagnosed this spring, I don't know how long the chemo lasted. But he is now getting blood transfusions. I lost a close friend in Sept. He started off needing blood, then he needed transfusions of platelets, all because the bone marrow was ruined by Chemo.

Mt brother is now going down the same road.

    Cheers Pat.

Well, our bags are packed and we leave for Brazil tomorrow. We'll be gone for about 3 weeks and I'll have only limited internet connectivity, but I will try to drop in and say Hi.

If not, have a great Holiday and let's all hope 2007 turns out to be a universally wonderful year for all.

That reminds me, we have to do our annual wish list. I guess it's been a tradition for the past 3 years or so, and who am I to stop that tradition?

Rules: car/truck/motorcycle must be for available sale now. You can use MSRP or actual prices, but no trade-in allowances. And you have to spend it on your vehicle fleet.

If Santa put $100,000 in my stocking (I've been good Santa!), here's how I think I would spend it:

2007 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD, loaded, $35,884. Trip vehicle.
2007 Subaru Tribeca Ltd DVD NAV, $33,553. Wife's vehicle.

$30,563 left, and this is a tough one. I want a convertible to replace the Miata, but 2 seats is often not enough. 27640 for a G6 with a folding hardtop, or $25,276 for a Sebring soft top, or $30,494 for a Solara SLE V6 convertible. Perfect price, so I'll go with the Solara:

2007 Toyota Solara SLE convertible, $30,494.

The rest would go to gasoline.

    Anyone else wanna play?

If Santa put $100,000 in my stocking, I would start by paying off the credit cards ... pay off the daughter's college loans ... and then I'm not sure what I'd do with the rest ... I think I'd still have about $50,000 .. guess I'd buy a new car for the husband and me .. but since I haven't looked at anything except the few with the daughter I'm really not sure what I'd want .. lol
