Pat and Rita...sorry to hear the news, but as always, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
I spent many ours today making copies of CDs...the divorce is slowly and inexorably moving forward. We will be working on a list of assets this weekend.
On the good side, school is over!!! Yesterday was the last day for us teachers here...kids finished Thursday. I don't go back until Jan 8th. Michael's friend is flying down tomorrow from Jersey (Cranford) and will be staying for a week...off to Busch Gardens Tampa on Friday.
Michael has finally settled on his chosen profession after realizing he loves making music and playing guitar...he wants to go into audio engineering and music production...many choices from tech-type schools (SAE Institute, Full Sail, etc) to regular degree programs...he likes the program that Berklee School of Music has.
Anyway...have fun, kids

Air travel is a mess here, the air traffic controllers are on a work slow-down style strike, so instead of getting here at 12:30pm we got here at 3:50am!
Any how, besides that delay things are great.
In the auto world, Subaru should feel very flattered with the slew of Outback imitators here. Fiat has a Palio Weekend model, basically a Palio wagon with plastic cladding and raised suspension, albeit still FWD.
Next is the VW CrossFox, a minicompact hatchback with the same treatment, and again FWD. The clearance makes sense for all the extra potholes, but given all the sandy areas AWD would make even more sense.
Gas costs a fortune, and once again I find that diesel here costs WAY less, about 60% of the price of gas. So diesel is definitely the way to go here. Dad has a Chevy Blazer diesel with a manual tranny, interestingly. It´s the previous gen Blazer.
Have yet to see a single Subaru. Since Collor was impeached (hey, at least when we impeach a president he actually leaves office) the taxes on imported cars went back to being brutal, so everyone set up shop here, except Subaru.
You see tons of Fiats, Chevys, Fords, Peugoets, VWs, and Renaults, basically. And all european designs, too. Mostly small cars.
Funny - here the subcompact rules, then a compact is called an intermediate, and a mid-size is grande.
Any how, gotta run but had to say Hi to the Crew. Have not heard from Subaru about NAIAS, but I hope I do. Do not expect to, though, as they reorganize internally.
Take care, I will try to check in again soon.

Have a safe and peaceful holiday, everyone!
Speaking of SOA (sorta)...
I just heard from Coby*—and he's going to be spending 3 weeks in Europe/Africa shooting the upcoming Dakar Rally in January for the Car Lounge! He'll be camping the whole time and going on copter rides too on this photo shoot. Lucky dog!
* = Coby is one of the guys juice and I met on several of those SOA trips we took.

For my wish list- looked at a Saleen S7 yesterday- very cool car. I'll take the 100K and lease it for a few years!

$8k - trip to Hawaii and rent a convertible for a week!

The car's next adventure was a fender bender (my fault) that only scraped up the bumper. I am going to buff out those black tire marks on it soon I promise. Finally I got another flat because of a screw in the left rear.
This week the warranty will run out on mileage, the car is only 2 1/2 years old. I also hope to have it paid off early this spring. I plan to drive it out to South Dakota this summer (with new tires by then) Gas mileage is still very good and everything else in the car is fine. So I don't plan on trading it in--it is the still very much the right car for me (although an Outback would be nice. I discovered the pleasures of one in June when we had one, actually two as rental cars in Utah. Yes midway through our first week the first one we had overheated and got towed away by Hertz.)

Merry Christmas!!
I wonder if there is such a thing as a belated Christmas card? :P
Can you tell that holiday stress levels are at DEFCON1??
I did receive one surprise gift from one of my co-workers in our office Kris Kringle. I received a book listing the top Road trips in the US via back roads :shades: . I guess my talking about some of the trips I have done (Sunday Back road Drives with Bob. Juice and Mike; and the 48hrs runs for the last 5 years) gave her the idea.
Can't wait to try them out

Found out more about that Gol flight you mentioned in the fall. A private jet made by Embraer (a Brazilian company) hit a Boeing jet owned by Gol and the irony is that the big plane was the one that fell. All aboard the private jet survived. American pilot, by the way.
I say ironic because Embraer stock skyrocketed, due to the tough image it got. Weird.
The American pilot had turned off the black box recorder and it is widely suspected they were test driving the brand new to the market jet, i.e. performing manuevers to see what it could do, if you will.
Air traffic controllers took a lot of heat and basically that is what triggered this strike. They are mad as heck and are not gonna take it any more, basically. To be fair they do work with old equipment and earn about 300 dollars per month to due an essential job.
Any how, domino effect, basically. One pilot goes on a joy ride and the whole country ends up sleeping in airports.

This one actually held my cup while I drank a beer.
Cheers and a happy new year to all. :shades:

Nah, that looks schweet.
All is well below the equator, we head out for another road trip tomorrow, this time towards the interior of the country. The highway is supposedly new, so hopefully we will not see the car-eating potholes we saw last time.
My brother has a Civic and that thing was bottoming out left and right. The leather (yes, the Civic is viewed as a premium compact here) is worn in some areas though it has held up a lot better than the 5 year old Fiats I see around here.
Get this - a loaded new Civic costs $40 grand, US dollars!
But that´s nothing, an H6 Outback will set you back a cool $100 grand. It would fill up that wish list all by itself!

We have to setup another get together with the NY/NJ Crew and the DC Crew.

Do you rent your truck out to light up football games?
Just how much road (countryside?) do you brighten up when you pass through?

she has looked at quite a few different cars - although mostly hatchbacks ... the HHR, Versa, Matrix, Scion xA, Altima, even a used Chrysler 300!
She keeps coming back to the HHR. Anything anyone wants to contribute to the informational pot? She's really limited to about 16-17,000.
Interestingly enough, we were at a dealer today in Elkhart IN that had a Delorean sitting out front for sale! When I was in high school we had a neighbor who owned one for awhile. While daughter has certainly seen them before in pictures and movies, this was the first time to see one 'up close and personal' .. she pulled out the cell phone and snapped a pic!
How about a Hyundai or Kia? Great cars as basic transportation IMHO.
