It’s great when you find a place that doesn’t try to up-sell you every chance they get. Here’s my story about that.

About 2 weeks ago I took Mrs. j’s 2018 Subie to the dealer for an oil change because of time not mileage (car only has 13K miles on it. Got it with 7,200 miles on it last April and I’ve already had the oil changed once with full synthetic about 2 months after I got it). Let me just say, this dealer was pretty good with Mrs. j’s first Subie (2012), so I had no reason not to get the oil change there this time too. However, after about 30 minutes The Service Advisor comes to the waiting area and says, “ the tech noticed that your car is past due for inspection. We are running a special this month and for $8.99 we can do the inspection for you while we have the car on the rack”. I asked if that price included the emissions test too and he said it did. $8.99 is a good deal for this since it usually costs me around $45 at the indie place that I’ve been using for about 20 years. He then says the tech said although my tires are in good shape they should be rotated too. So, I asked if the rotation was included in the $8.99 price and he said, “NO, that’s an additional $40”. I said, “wait a minute. You have to take all 4 tires off to do a brake check for the inspection but you’re going to charge me $40 to roll the tires to a new position”? He said, “yes, that’s our standard charge for a rotation. We’re not running a special on rotations now”. I told him I didn’t want the rotation, just do the oil change.

I realize that there come-on inspection price will surely get them service work for most cars but anything they might have found with Mrs. j’s Subie would have been covered via warranty which wouldn’t have cost me anything. So, if they can’t up-charge for something while doing an inspection for me, they’ll have lost money on that deal which isn’t in their business plan. I guess you can say they’d get paid by Subie for warranty work but then they better have found a “real” problem otherwise Subie would come down on them for that. I also guess that dealers have to find ways to get people into their bays during hard times like we’re in now but I wasn’t falling for that $40 up-sale especially since I’m going to take the car to my tire store for a lifetime balancing of all 4 tires that includes a rotation.

In my experience, for a routine oil change, an indy shop may not provide much savings, maybe not even 10%. They are who one should look to for big jobs - if you need a transmission or even a braking system overhaul, look for an indy,

I've carried a pack of those sealable wipes along with a microfiber for the same purpose. I'll often clean the interior glass once I get to my destination, as well. People are gross.

Picked up the Fusion today and talk about upsell. The F&I guy gave an almost tearful rendition of why we should buy a 3 year 3rd party extended warranty for $2900. There was a wheel and tire package for $875 but he recommended the “better” plan for $70 more. All the while my eyes are glazing over and my son is squirming to get out of there.

While he was pontificating on the value of his various plans I glanced to the bottom where there was a total cost if you took everything he offered......$16,000!

On an $8100 car.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

We got a copy in the mail....about 5 months ago. We forget about it by the time we come out of isolation and actually have time to take the car in for an oil change.

Or you could go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter in your VIN.

But, when I make an appointment to have the oil change they tell me about any recalls. I don't want to put a reminder on my computer...check for recalls every month on two cars. If it is urgent they will tell me when I get a mailed notice.....the others can wait until I am going in anyway.

Good story............great point that since they are inspecting the brakes they can easily rotate the tires for you, if the $8.99 was really for your benefit. I think anyone with an I.Q. of 25 or more is going to know there is no way you are going to walk out of there, and only pay $8.99 for an inspection.

I always laugh when I hear an ad for a chain in the U.S., might be Goodyear or a transmission dealer....if you see a warning light come on bring your car to us for a no charge inspection....we'll find out what is wrong. I am sure they will....and will offer to fix it for you too!

What do I do with the notice that I get in the mail? Stop my life and make an appointment to get it fixed? Pin it to the office wall and try to remember it when I have time. No, I keep it in a pile of notes and then forget about it. I have one for airbags sitting around for the C250 that must be 2 years old - they'll notify me when the parts come in. Easier for me to schedule an oil change, they tell me what recalls are outstanding.....they can do it while it is getting an oil change anyway. Trying to simplify my life...not make it more complicated.

$16000 + $8100.......could have bought a new car with a 3 year warranty. That's why it is sometimes cheaper to buy new

I've used a combination of an indie Honda/Acura repair shop and a local shop for the Prelude. I'll probably do the same with the BMW for most things but will use the dealer from time to time for that car.

As posted in CCBA, I just put out $7k on materials for upgrading the backyard. And, at that price, I don't want to pay people to do it for me. LOL. And, actually, it isn't quite everything. Will still need to buy some railings and materials to build around the new grill. Plans include replacing our 12x16, 8x12, and 3x5 decks with trex and building a 26' x 26' pergola of my own design. Also ordered a new 6-burner grill. Our Jenn-Air is still working but the appearance is suffering and we figure we got 15 years out of it, so it served well. It is all stainless, so I'll be re-appropriating pieces of it.

Well, the PT Cruiser has sailed off into the sunset. I rolled it out to the street this morning and put an ad on CL around 3:30pm. I priced it at $2800, about $100 less than Edmunds value for Average condition.

Within 10 minutes I had a call on the ad. A woman started right in with “will you take less”? I said I wouldn’t negotiate over the phone and she said she would come to see it if she could get a ride. Wasn’t hopeful.

Not a minute later I get a call from a young guy who says he wants it. Again I get the “will you take less.” Same response. He says he gets off work in an hour and could I hold it for him. I said I can’t turn away someone who comes with money But if it sells before he gets here I’ll call him so as to not waste his time.

No sooner do I hang up the phone but I get another call, this time from the driveway. A mason doing work in the area was driving by. He looks at it, likes it and offers $2,200. We meet in the middle and $2,500 later it has a new owner.

Total time elapsed from posting the ad to sale: 90 minutes. Would have been quicker but the buyer had to run to the bank to raid his wife’s bank account.

As a post script, the woman who had first called called back and asked if she could just come and look at it even though I had told her it was sold. I said ok. She and her family rolled in and she was visibly disappointed that she lost out. She said she loved the PTs since they first came out. Call it a Barbie Car.

They seemed nice. I gave her a few tips on car buying and they left happy.

I use the indie garage for the 2014 C250, since it is a 2014 not too many recalls. And the indie does exactly what I ask them to do...no overselling, and cost seems to be reasonable if $350 for a washer tank is reasonable (probably is with all the labor involved).

Probably a good few years left on it....maybe a few more repairs than average but, still, for $2500 - happy that it starts and runs, and there is some element of fun driving them, especially if you like pretending you're a gangster.

Looks New? Don’t look too close. It only had 62k miles which was why I was disappointed that the rockers were starting to rust through. I valued it Fair to Average because of that.

You get email notices, which you file under whatever e-folder system you have, and get to it when you can. On the Volt, I get a notice on my app, which is useful as I can let it sit there until I’m ready to do something about it. But I’m reminded whenever I look at the app

I picked up the 2er this afternoon. Fresh oil, new plugs, and new tires. I stayed with Michelin but went with A/S 3+ instead of the OEM PSS. I really like how that tire has performed on the Club Sport and it lets me drive the 2er in sub-freezing temperatures without an appreciable loss of grip. If I find time to hit the track I’ll buy some lightweight wheels and fit them with R Comps.

I do the same except in Excel and only for the Honda and BMW. The other 2 are leases and need nothing more than oil changes, rotations, and differential fluid changes so I just rely on the maintenance reminder in both.

Runs and drives on a PT Cruiser is a questionable definition for runs and drives. I'd be sweating bullets during a test drive trying to sell that car, that something doesn't go wrong before you can sell it.

Check engine light was a common problem with my Neon.

So the best the myth-believing "Speed Kills" IIHS sponsored media crowd can come up with is alarmist articles like this based on a small sample size of 1 year of data:

Yet, let's blame the higher speed limits for the so-called INCREASE in crashes and fatalities, even though we don't tell you our numbers have any real meaning qualifying them with a rate, such as per million or billion miles driven! I'm sure this consistent trend from the "speed kills" crowd is an honest oversight, that will be corrected in short order, so you know.... internet nut jobs that rely on actual facts can't so easily debunk them.

I seriously think it has gotten to the point that if a journalist even so much as cites someone from the IIHS the article should go straight to the round file!

I only got seat time on the test drive but the Fusion rode nice, handled as well as a domestic sedan could and had adequate power. I say adequate because for a 240hp. V6 it didn’t seem to be that powerful. I suspect the previous owner never put the pedal down.

I gave the kid a bottle of Techron and told him to take a long drive on the highway. If I get ahold of it I will definitely give it an Italian tune up.

It has a very nice interior. Even my wife was impressed.

V6 it didn’t seem to be that powerful. I suspect the previous owner never put the pedal down.

I gave the kid a bottle of Techron and told him to take a long drive on the highway. If I get ahold of it I will definitely give it an Italian tune up.

It has a very nice interior. Even my wife was impressed.

I love Italian tuneups, and Italian food. Anyone in the mood for pasta?

Looks New? Don’t look too close. It only had 62k miles which was why I was disappointed that the rockers were starting to rust through. I valued it Fair to Average because of that.

Although three of my cars came from Florida I have to suffer in the rust hell of upstate NY.

We were mailed a notice regarding the notice about a part they would put in the GLK if you chose to do so. At the time, we thought it sounded like a hassle for something that they said was unlikely to be a problem...very minor. We would have ignored the notice normally, decided not to do it...but, when they offered to do it when I called for the oil change we thought....why not have it done.....it isn't a problem if they keep the car for an extra few hours....we can't do much these days anyway.

Runs and drives on a PT Cruiser is a questionable definition for runs and drives. I'd be sweating bullets during a test drive trying to sell that car, that something doesn't go wrong before you can sell it.

Check engine light was a common problem with my Neon.

Boy you nailed it. We had an evap check engine light for a year that no one could isolate. Finally found a guy who could diagnose and fix it. It was some frayed sensor wires. It would have made the car unsaleable. It was not a well built car.

That was pretty exciting to watch. A lot of highways around here only have 25% of the normal traffic volumes because of the lock down. Could have been worse.
What could have been going on with the driver? I thought it was a suicide mission, but, he actually came to a fairly normal stop when up against the cop car. Please follow up with the cause when you find out!

My daughter started looking for a 3 row SUV to haul kids. She noticed that my local Subaru dealer had 4 used Ascents listed on their web site.

I called the salesman I used for the last few purchases. He was there, but was busy. Then I called the Sales manager - he was also busy. I left a message for both.

Eventually the salesman called. I told him what she was interested in. One of them sold that afternoon. He made sure to tell me that they did not discount their used cars at all...more than once.

I think my string of buying Subaru's has ended.

Check internet to get an idea of prices and what is available. Might be better to buy it new. Maybe a private seller......though, I'd get a pretty thorough mechanic to look it over...if spending that much!
