Work at Subaru? Well, I don't want to move, since we just bought our dream house 3 years ago, in a great school district (which is our top priority).
Why stay in the World Bank Group? Benefits, mostly, and quality of life issues. I get 28 days of leave, changing to 30 after 2003 (10 years), 15 days sick leave, 3 days paternity leave for each child, and up to 5 days family sick leave to look after them. Every 2 years they pay for the family to go to Brazil, all expenses. No income taxes since I'm on a diplomatic visa and the Bank is considered foreign soil (a rather huge yet legal loophole). It's hard to leave all that and work in "the real world".
I can strangle trolls like Hondabro (ask Ken) and claim diplomatic immunity. Just kidding about that one. ;-)
Prospects look good. Out of the 3 people that interviewed me for the first job I applied for, 2 were old friends, and rumor has it I'm the top candidate so far. I have another interview Tuesday, and again I'll know 2 people out of the 3 that will interview me. That plus I've had two invitations to apply for other jobs. So things are looking good.
A book? Yes, I think I will, eventually. Two actually. One about cars, or maybe the history of Subaru. The second about Ethics, or the lack thereof, at the Bank. Though I'm sure I'd have to write that one anonymously or lose my pension!
Thanks to all for the positive thoughts. This has really become a support group.
You have to be a foreign national to get some of those benefits. Even a green card cancels many benefits.
Oh, Japan? Sweet. One of the jobs I'm applying for may include some travel, that would be cool. See if you can hit a dealer and find out what's in the pipeline. They seem to get everything sooner.
paisan: Darlene said there were 7, actually, and dealers ought to carry them. I have not seen a Haynes or anything like that for the newer models.
Yeah you can always get the ones from the dealer. I just ordered the Trooper Helm one on CD for $100 So figured I might want to get one before I did the rack and pinion on the XT6.
No. I could voluntarily pay social security if I wanted to retire there, but that's doubtful so I don't.
It's a loop hole you could drive a Subaru through, but the reality is the Bank uses it to pay a lower salary than the market commands. My college grad peers typically earn more, so it isn't quite a free lunch.
Still, I'll take the benefits and quality of life over ultimate salaries.
Actually, work keeps me away from Carnaval festivities (Mardis Gras, but much bigger), so that tax-free status is to make up for missing the biggest party on earth.
I wish you luck in your search. Have faith and you will be fine. As Steve (fibber) mentioned, being in the semiconductor field you get use to layoffs (almost). I feel probability is going to catch me soon though (made it through 5 layoffs now in my company).
On another note, I lost my sister to a new Camry. She purchased it before I could convince her to go the Impreza / 03 Forester route. Of course the first words out of my mouth were; "what - not a Subaru?". She picks it up on Saturday. I now need to bite my tongue and wish her lots of luck with a great choice. But being single, she would be having more fun in a REX. Sorry Patti.
Ken - Have a great trip. Japan is so civilized. Love the seat covers in the taxis.
Please offer her my condolences. Just kidding! The Camry wasn't so bad, just a little numb and a bit pricey once you add desireable features. Not to mention I checked inventories from 4 dealerships and never found a 5 speed model with ABS.
The right job will find you.. rather than the other way 'round. That's how I ended up where I am, but that's a story for another day. Write that ethics book *after* you retire!
juice: Sorry to hear of your situation. I expect you'll find a place within the World Bank; it doesn't seem like termination is a done deal. If you care to, drop me an e-mail offline as I still maintain a number of DC connections from when I lived in the area.
paisan: Speaking of e-mail, I sent you one. I may be able to check that XT6 out for you as it's practically in my back yard.
Ken: If you're picking up STi Forester parts in Japan, maybe you could think about picking up dupes for me...? ;-) Enjoy the trip.
Will do my best to hit the chat tonight - I spoke at a conference in Princeton, NJ today and have been delivering training to a client all week prior to today. I'd much rather write than talk at the moment.
Thanks for the offer. I'll put that offer in my savings account if you don't mind, just in case.
One of the managers for the job I'm interviewing for on Tuesday wants to meet tomorrow 'cause he's leaving town. That can only be good, because I know he did not ask all the cadidates to meet with him.
Plus, I got two "invitations" to apply for other positions, so it looks good. Those I'll also keep as Plan B.
The judges are still deliberating, but early indications are that "Steve" will officially be added to the Subaru Demographic List of Name.
Wait...yes, the Supreme Court of the Subaru Crew has ruled, by a 6-3 margin, that "Steve" is officially a name for Subaru owners. Congratulations, Steve, Steve, Steve, and Steve. And Steve and Steve too.
That makes it Dave, Mike, Steve, and any name with a "K".
What if you have a different name? Exceptions are made for pet owners and Mac users, plus teachers and anyone with more than a BS or BA degree.
New ones are $22,500, the $6 grand in mods he'll likely not recover. Mileage is ultra-low, that thing is cherry. I bet the bidding gets up to $20 grand, and that would still make it a bargain.
This is the second time around for this car. The first time, it was around $25k; reserve was still not met. -Who knows How Many Serges? Only The Shadow Knows!
Oh he's out of his mind. No way will he get $25k. Used is used, period. Mods do not necessarily add value. If he measured 0-60 and did dyno runs, it wasn't exactly pampered. I wonder how long that clutch will last.
Even optimistically, current new price of $22,500 plus $6 grand in mods is $28,500. But it's used, so you lose 10% immediately, another 5% at least for the mileage and half year of use. Maybe 10% if it's been a whole year.
That ball parks it, optimistically, at $22,800 to $24,225.
Did you have to show an Impreza starved person that car?! I am panting!!!! Oh wow! Damn! Husband not home for 12 hours... Hey that guy said he ordered an Outback? An Outback over a WRX? Is her crazy or an I? You got my mind spinning. Help! Heather
He posted on the i-club that his wife was scared s***less to ride in the car...with that much power on tap, it could be overwhelming. I rode in a friend's M5 recently; almost 400 hp. He took it on the highway and within seconds, was zooming. I htought he was doing around 80. I looked at the speedo...it said 120mph...I was sweating bullets...I told him to slow down. Too much for me, especially on a public road.
I agree; he won't get $25,000 for that WRX. Needs to de-modify and sell to have any hope of getting a total of $25k for the parts + car.
BTW: I don't buy the 'wife is scared of it now' bit. even if it made an honest-to-god 320HP and had a fat torque curve (not high rpm peaky) it still wouldn't be amazingly worse than stock. you can drive a fast car slow! but not vice versa, hehe. if she really is scared of it, she should've been scared of it bone stock too.
There's another reason, like the wife WANTS an Outback instead because they're bigger, cushier, etc.
Well no WRX for me, but I figured it out! I thought about what I want since trading in my OBS 6 weeks ago. I want a new 2002 Aspen White OBS- not WRX. The only thing I'll be loosing out on is the limited slip differential in the rear (Hey what does that do anyway?) and the larger brakes. I don't care for the turbo at all. I will be gaining 16" wheels and much higher saftey ratings over my 99 OBS too. That way I can trade-in the manual Outback and not have a larger loan at all, but infact reduce the loan to 2 years instead of 3. They have one 1 mile from my home too! I will talk it over with the husband when he gets home. It is Mother's Day and my birthday next week, so that's in my favor Wish I did not buy tires and a spoiler for the 2001 Outback now! I know this will make my heart happy. I am sick of feeling sad! Enough of that!! Keep your fingers crossed for me please! Heather
Hey, I could have sworn I saw a Outback Sport board here 5 weeks ago when I joined, but can't seem to find it now. Can someone point me to it? Thanks, Heather
ACK! how can you guys show that to me! I am beginning to re-think my sedan leanings...... I agree, i would be interested to know the backstory on that whole situation. And why would someone drop 28K into something they werent sure their wife wouldn't like? Did the crack fairy visit, or does it have something to do with sense being inversely proportional to disposable income? -Rachel
Oh my, yes why! I can answer that from the other prospective. My L.L. Bean was $28,000! Yikes! I had no idea it was NOT what I wanted until after. We tend to take our cars for granted, or at least that is what I did with my Little Sister (1999 OBS). I treaded for practical reasons, 1) Husband wanted it 2) More room for family 3) safer- a lot safer. etc. Still does not heal the emotions I feel. 6 weeks now and still want OBS back! I will give hubby the Bean adn trade his 2001 Outback in for my Aspen White 2002 MANUAL OBS, if he agrees. Same exact loan amount I figured it out in Microsoft Works with tax and all and Fair Kelly Blue Book Trade-in Value on the Outback. I will loose the rear Limited Slip Differntial on the Outback and the disk brakes in the rear- but I will be HAPPY again! Feel light and airy today just thinking about it. Wish me luck speaking with hubby tonight... Heather

Another alternative would be to follow Loosh's suggestion and get a job at SoA. :-)

Wow, can I apply for a job at the World Bank!? ;-)
Hondabro (cringe) -- glad that's done with.

I'm going to Japan next week on business. Any Subaru-specific things you want me to look into?
Ken
Maybe One of Two Serges!

Ciao,

Great chat yesterday. A dozen or so participants, but it was quite active.
paisan: LOL about the # of bodies (unethical managers) that fit in the Trooper. Made me feel better. Thanks.
Go a prequel to an interview today at 2pm, which is a good sign. Why else would this one particular manager want to meet me, specifically?

Thanks for the comic relief on a Friday afternoon.
Good luck Heather. You deserve the new OBS, and the white contrats nicely with the two-tone. Definitely a 5 speed this time! ;-)
