Tod, I have the A.R.E. LSII fiberglass cover painted to exactly match the truck color. This is my second A.R.E. and I am extremely satisfied with it. It cost around $600.00 installed. The company has a $20.00 discount coupon on their web site. http://www.4are.com. It has a great locking system and two hinged arm pneumatic lifters to open and close easily. Not cheap, but definitely worth the money (at least to me).

I have seen comments by people who have done the home liner kits and they basically peel off. The cost for the line-x is for the prep and the special equipment needed to make it permanent. If you want a cheap way to protect your bed, get a rug or a bed mat.

Has anyone looked at adding overload / helper springs to their truck yet? I have a 4x4 quad 4.7L 5sp. When I put about 500 - 700 lbs in the bed, I am riding on the rubber bump stops on the axle.

So far I have not been able to find a set of air shocks that fit this truck. Air "bags" (from AirLift) are about $225.00 a set (2500 lbs max capacity). Hellwig helper springs are about $250.00+ per set (1500 lbs).

Everything else looks cheap or WAY overpriced! I am not looking to turn this truck into a 1 ton, but I like the idea of traveling with my 8hp riding mower in the back w/out traveling on the axle

When you actually call pickupaccessories.com about the quad cab Advanced Cover, They'll tell you it was posted wrong and is actually $499+$72 shipping. I found it at a local dealer in Buffalo installed for $575. Of course we have 8% tax to keep the Democrats happy but seems a lot easier to let someone istall it for with the difference being that of tax. Good Luck, I'm about to get the cover myself. 2nddak

Tom, I have the Bushwacker rails and a pace edwards roll top. They both fit fine. I was concerned at first when I installed the rail caps because they are a little thick with the diamond pattern, but the roll top rails still fit okay over them. I am disatisfied by the output of the stock headlight and have considered upgrading to a higher wattage bulb. Some references way back mentioned potential menlting of the lense and/or socket and wiring. Are there any success stories of people who have upgraded to bigger bulbs like those offered through JC Whitney? Is there a more trustworthy source for bulbs? Please advise.

I changed one of my headlight bulbs (capsule) with a Philips BlueVision 55W/65W. There's no difference in color or output between it and the stock bulb. Likewise for the back-up bulbs. Exchanged one of those for a 50W halogen. Now I have a bunch of spares.

If you want to see a difference, you'll probably have to move up to 80W/100W or start from scratch and put in an HID system.

I just purchased a 4x2 white quad....I notice most folks don't have body side moulding..I would think dings would be a real problem (had a blazer that really got dinged up over the years w/o moulding). Is there a source for body side moulding that isn't black?

(bradp1) Another real concern (Besides being illegal in some areas) is that going with higher-wattage capsules means that they will burn out faster. (Simple physics)

Several of us have experimented with different capsules (spike50 and myself included) To truly get more candlepower one needs to consider HID or seperate driving lights. (different lighting patten than fog lamps)

I have the roof rack. It seems to be a quality piece. I have not installed it yet though. partly time and partly I haven't got the heart to drill into her yet to mount it.

Yep...I want the rack, but drilling the holes is what scares me...i can just imagine the drill doing a nice figure 8 on the roof or getting a leak, etc...i'm sure it is an easy process though.

When Iinstalled a visor on my f150, I took wide masking tape and laid it along the general install lines. This made it easier to mark the hole points without worrying about scratching the paint. Once the hole points were determined adn confirmed, I started with a 3/32 bit and then went to the required bit. The tape and 3/32 bit allowed me to start the hole without slippage and the tape kept the paint damage to a minimum.

Instead of drilling holes you could mount Yakima racks that are twice the rack that the factory offers. Just install with clips in top of door and your done. Cost is around 220.00.

I've postponed making this decision too because of either drilling the holes or having the Yakima or Thule feet rub the paint. Trying to determine the best way to carry a canoe and kayak or two canoes at once. May end up with a trailer. At my "advanced" age, throwing an 80# canoe up onto a roof rack 6.5 feet off of the ground without scratching the paint gets tricky.

Will be receiving my intense blue quad cab in ~ a week. I ordered it with the 10A factory painted step bumper (they looked good in the brochure) and was thinking about the factory bed rails (probably black). Anyone have any comments on these accessories.

I have seen various posts on a sun roof. The dealer wanted to sell me a quad off the lot that had a sun roof. I will find out where that was installed. It looked nice. They had to cut the overhead console to the point where only a portion (~1/3) of it remained.

I found a great option as a spare tire lock...it is the Kryptonite cable lock (vinyl coated cable with a weatherproof built-in lock and 5.5' long). It costs about $12.00 at Home Depot.

vinyl cable locks are the easiest things to cut. Just about anything from edged pliers to snips will cut those cables. I wouldn't recommend it, but then again that's only my opinion!

only given as an option against a thief looking for an easy grab, certainly not the best solution (ie 'sparetirelock.com') but better than nothing. I think half inch cable is as effective as most chain (bolt cutters will go thru both).

I found the perfect solution. I took my good spare with the 15x8 aluminum rim off the truck and put it in my garage. I then installed an old 15x6 rim and tire left over from my previous Dakota in its place. Its not what someone would want to steal but it would serve as a perfectly good spare until I could get home to install the "good" one. Rick

I think the idea here is to have the tire with your truck and not in the garage!?! No disrespect intended, it's just from my experience thieves can still get $5 for a crappy spare, and where I live... they'll take it!!! Nothing worse than getting stuck in a bad part of town with only three functioning tires!

I do not know where you live but I have carried a spare in the bed of my last couple of trucks for YEARS and had no problems with thieves. One does not need alarms nor even locks in Vermont either.

I guess I can stand several more months of cold weather each year for a less-parinoid lifestyle.

BTW... What is a "Bad part of town"?? ;-)

Where do I live??? Have you heard about the place where the sports fans throw snowballs at Santa Claus??? I live outside Philadelphia and had the pleasure of driving through some notoriously "bad" sections to get to work. You guys are lucky, even in the suburbs We haven't left our front doors unlocked since the '70s! How would I define a "bad" section of town?!? I guess automotively speaking if you break down and go for help, the bad guys steal or strip your car, whereas if you stay with your broken down vehicle and wait for help, you get mugged and then carjacked... Here's a recap of my misadventures from 1986 to 1996;
'80ish Chevy Station Wagon - 1. window broken and FACTORY AM/FM radio stolen (practice?) 2. Rock thrown from overpass through windshield while I was driving home, cops never came. I ran after a cop passing buy to report incident and was almost arrested myself! 3. car eventually stolen for good. '86 GMC S15 - 1. Window broken in, console rummaged through for about 95 cents and a penknife 2. spare tire stolen '96 Chevy S10, I got smart and started parking in the University highrise parking lot, $100 a month!!! Slightly paranoid... Perhaps!!! But at least I don't work in town anymore.
My definition of "bad part of town" kind of reminds me of the joke, "What's the difference between a Black Bear and a Grizzly Bear?" - The Black Bear will climb up the tree after you to eat you,.. the Grizzly will just knock down the tree and eat you!!!

I'm not sure, but I believe that VT. is the only state where one does not need a "permit" to carry. No matter how much snow Bruce gets, he may be living in utopia.
As far as living in close proximity to Phila., or any other "cultural center" (read "city") for that matter, when everyone is out to get you, being paranoid is the only thing that makes sense. Am I right Bob? :-)

Scottie, you are correct in that VT does not require a permit to carry a concealed weapon. There may be others, but I am not certain. VT boasts a very low crime rate, and that may well be the reason. The state trusts the citizens.

Amber Fire may not become a collectors item, but I have.

Is there a K&N intake kit for the 4.7 V8???

I have read that the kit for the 5.9 (or 5.2...I can't remember) will work and/or fit on the 4.7.

Is this true??? If so, what do I need to buy?

I would very much like to get an aftermarket kit for my QC 4.7 and I am not sure where to look.

I believe that amber fire and medium bronze are cancelled for the rest of the 2001 model year.

So far, I have not seen any information that these colors will be permanently discontinued.

There is a K&N intake out there for the 4.7, as I know it's been tested on a few trucks, but I don't think it's gone retail just yet. You can always go to http://www.quickd.com, http://www.intenseperformance.com, or http://www.airaid.com for some 4.7 options, plus there's always the drop-in K&N element.

"I have read that the kit for the 5.2 will work and/or fit on the 4.7 Yes and No! I personally have the K&N air filter made for the 5.2 installed in my 4.7. I compared it to the original factory paper filter and to my untrained eye the dimensions appeared to be correct so I installed it and it has worked fine for over 7500 miles. I have read that K&N had some concerns about the fit and were coming out with a different part number for the 4.7, I would advise to wait until that part is released unless you have to have one right now. Rick

Yes the filter will work - all Dakota filters are the same - he was asking about an intake kit like the LA engines have, which you can buy from the dealer (underhood airdam and all). K&N's developing an intake, and the filter's been out for a long time. Sorry for any confusion.

How about the other air filters for the QC?? Like the Intense Performance filter? How do they compare to the K&N. They are a lot cheaper than the K&N and are said to allow better airflow.

OK . . .

I've seen a lot of people talking about how "sweet" or "tough" their "side steps"
(nerf bars) look, and how they think their mounting is "strong" . . . I've looked at
the mounting of "Go-Rhino", "Steel-Horse", "Westin", and several others, but I
still haven't seen anything which I would feel comfortable using as a true Nerf Bars . . .
(From what I can see {pictures only}, I think the "Manik" bars are the most durable ?)

I want something which I can use to protect my body panels when four bying . . .
scraping across rocks, "sliding" and slamming into rocks, etc . . .

Before you reply, HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY USED THEIR PARTICULAR PRODUCT
THIS WAY ???

Until you actually test the integrity of the product, any amount of perceived durability
is just that PERCEIVED . . .

I don't want to waste my money on any junk that is going to bend or break the first time
I use it for what it was intended . . .

The air filters from Intense Performance are made by a company called S&B. They're the same as a K&N and have an extra filter element on the end. I wouldn't say they flow better necessarily, but they're certainly at least as good. They carry all the same OEM documentation and CARB approvals too, but without the big margin that K&N enjoys charging.
