Harold, I have had no problem thus far. But, now that you brought it to my attention, I am reasonably certain that I will be tangling my foot in the very near future. (Why can't people keep these things to themselves?) Actually, I may use the forward part of my foot to depress the clutch as opposed to the middle of my foot. This is a habit developed from driving smaller manual transmission vehicles. Driving a car in reverse only works to reduce mileage if it is your father's prize Porche or Ferrari and you are not supposed to be driving it.

    But a cya anyway.

I know that I have been less than thorough in my contributions here recently - damn work, but I do take my responsibilities with the club seriously.

I would urge everyone on this forum not to provide information on how to prevent mileage from accumulating on a vehicle. The Dakota owners club has a well deserved reputation which will be damaged by any conversations associated with this topic.

    Thank you

    Andy

I belive I can speak for Bookitty as well in that we were just goofin back and forth. If you note my reply to the original inquiry, you will see I agree with you wholeheartly. We have a good reputation here and we all want to protect that.

I know you were only joking - it's cold up here, but my sens of humour (or humor) hasn't quite frozen. Just preempting anyone who may not have been quite so flippant in their response.

I know that there are a lot of hard workers out there, and a Dakota QC 4wd is my dream vehicle for now, but I have had luck using a combo wash/wax concentrate, being careful not to wash in direct sunlight, nor when vehicle body is hot from sun or engine; always use 100% cotton only. Any sponge or mitt or synthetic towel blend is probably "harder" than paint surface, so of course will scratch it. Also, when I'm forced to wax, I try to make sure that I use a clean applicator, changing surface often, so that grit riding on the applicator doesn't damage the paint! My $.02.

Oh yeah, the wash/wax concentrate seems to leave actually a more protective residue than a buffed surface, especially on chrome. (a la you old timers using kerosene in your rinse water!)

Andy, I was wondering why no one seems to seek my advice more than once. I was really technically "stretched" on this one. Glad to see your posts. Missed you.

Does DC or Dodge post technical bulletins where we can access them? If so, would someone please post it. THANKS

Hello All, 7K miles and still love the truck.
Its met all my needs from hauling wood to hauling the family.
Although I have no complaints with it, I have been having 2nd thoughts about not getting a limited slip differential, (I have a 00 QC 4x4 4.7 auto, T&H package), and am now thinking of converting the rear differential to Limited Slip.
Has anyone done this? If so, does anyone have any good suggestions, either for a unit to get and approximate cost or something like, 'don't do it'?

(ya, I know, I should have ordered the thing with LSD but I was being cheap/stupid. When I finally
decided I wanted it, it was too late to change the order)
(FYI, mileage is about 13 when doing combo highway/city and 17-18 when doing straight highway @ 65-70)
    Thanks in advance

Personally, I like to know everything there is to know about my truck. First off, the speedo and odometer are sourced from a magnetic sensor in the diff. Whether going forward or backward, you'll accumulate miles and show a positive speed. All the sensor knows is that the ring gear is turning. If one were to disconnect the sensor, you'd have to do it at the diff and plug the hole with a threaded plug.

OHC_BABY- If you are going to promote such activities, please do it elseware. I belive i speak for others in saying,we have worked hard to establish a good reputation for these forums and do not want to tarnish it with involving ourselves with such topics. If the indivual involved wants the information there are other plases to find it without us becoming involved. Just my $.02

Stonhamdave-There are a couple different routes to go based on your abilities. You could check around at your local auto recyclers (junkyards) for a Dak in an accident and pull the whole rearend. or purchase the posi chuck and associated hardware and follow the Service Manual's description on your own. My guess, and it is just a ballpark, is you're probably looking at about $800 if you have a dealer do the swap.(8 hrs @ $70/hr and tipical markup on parts) Another option is to go with an aftermarket unit advertized in the more popular off-road mags, such as a air-locker, ect. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

If OHC_BABY wants to answer a question posted here, it is his choice. Thats what the forum is for, exchange of information. Don't be a bunch of babies and pretend that you never have thought about stopping the milage from adding up on your vehicle. Only actually modifying your vehicle to do this is illegal, not discussing it. Maybe we should censor questions about waxing as well.

I was asked by a number of people to be an informal co-host of this group along with themacguy (Jack). I haven't spoken to him about this issue, but am sure he will post in due course - he probably has his head up an oil well right now.

This owners' group was set up as an opportunity to exchange information, tips, hints etc that will help all of us to enjoy the experience of owning a Dakota.

I do not want to start trying to control the discussions that occur here, but we do have to recognize that we have responsibilities, both to Edmunds (the user agreement) and to one another. This group has a well deserved reputation, to the extent that Edmunds are working to get official DC representation in the group.

When information is requested / supplied that effectively allows people to act illegally, unethically or dangerously then we are only damaging ourselves. For every smug individual that defeats their odometer there is a potentially defrauded manufacturer, any number of potentially defrauded resellers and later owners and a less safe vehicle on the road.

Let us please all remember what keeps bringing us back to this site.
  • iowabigguyiowabigguy Member Posts: 552
What you said in #1321 may be true however I don't believe your truck would run properly. I know for sure that a speed input is required for the anti-lock brakes to function properly. Your mileage IS STORED in you engine controller and is probably a required input for proper engine operation when moving. I was also under the impression that your speed was also used in the engine controller to determine shiftpoints with the 4.7's auto transmission.

To others - Censorship in any form is repungent. My belief is this forum is for the open discussion of things that relate to the ownership and operation of our Dodge Dakotas. The question that was asked implied it was possibly for illegal purposes. However it does have technical merit and if someone desired to answer, it should not automatically bring down a rain of moralistic judgement.
The physical act of altering your vehicle to prevent logging miles traveled is both illegal and morally wrong. However impediments in the free exchange of information is also morally wrong.

Enough babling from the fools that think people who have fictious names on an automobile website have some type of established reputation. The only reputation is in your mind. And for you to question some ones ethics? GET REAl, GET A LIFE, AND GET YOUR [non-permissible content removed] OUT OF THAT CHAIR IN FRONT OF YOUR COMPUTER. Then go outside and realize that that the reputation you need to worry about is the one there. Not the on in the E world.
  • ohc_babyohc_baby Member Posts: 116
To be honest, i'm sure that the PCM will throw a code and store it once the speed sensor has been disconnected. What he does is his business, and I know that the PCM can't be reset without a scantool, even if you disconnect the battery and discharge the capacitors. I'd like to hear back from the guy when/if a dealer voids his warrantee. I'd hate to think that people out there that know how to help me fix my truck would refuse to help me, regardless of what they think of my judgement. To each his own, I suppose.
  • ohc_babyohc_baby Member Posts: 116
And what is this about the forum's reputation?
I'd much rather have a reputation of being helpful
than judgemental. I think that the forum has a
highly inflated ego, anyway. There are maybe 20
people that routinely post. I wouldn't consider
that much influence or reputation - I just want to
be helpful and learn as much about how my truck
works as possible. Besides, once DC kills of Dodge and Plymouth (oh, wait...) we'll have to be
responsible for every system on our vehicle, just
    like Studebaker and AMC.
  • steve234steve234 Member Posts: 460
My reputation is the same to me on or off the net. I would not help a relative disconnect the odometer and I sure the heck won't help some twerp on the net. I know of no ethical reason to disconnect the odometer. This bit about freedom of information is crap. We as members of society have the right and duty to not participate in an unethical act. I would no more exchange information about how to cheat another person than I would help a pedaphile or a bomber.

I have an '01 Quad Cab that has what I consider to be an annoying heater blower noise. This noise could best be described as a "whistling" when the blower is on any speed above the lowest setting -AND- I have the air control set to floor only. It's almost as if one of the air control "flaps" isn't closing all the way.

Once set to the above, if I rotate the air control knob to any other setting, I can hear the flap opening and the whistling goes away. Fortunately, this heater really cranks and once it's warm in the Quad, low fan setting is more than adequate with the temp control at midpoint. :-)

We've had some pretty cold days here recently in Wisconsin with temps in the single digits and wind chills below zero and the heater keeps up nicely. Anyone else experience this noise or aware of a DC fix?

My quad came in today! The dealer said there was some added charges(regional advertsing $355). I asked him that since the orignal price, that I have in writing, changed can I get my $500 deposit back and they keep the truck. He said yes but reluctantly. He said let me do some checking. He called back and then said it isn't regional advertising but 1% DC mark-up. But he did check with his manager and felt confident that they would be able to convince DC that they got the order in before the price increase. Also I wasn't happy by finding out that they do not dark tint the rear window if you dont have rear defrost or slider. He also said theat they would tint the window free of charge. WOW. That is back peddling at its finest. Love to see them sweat!!!!! Chalk another one up to the quad cab owners!!!!!

    oh yeah,
Can't we all just get a long!!!!

And I could (should) have stayed out of this.

While I do not feel information should be passed on about doing something everyone knows is illegal, I also feel this is not a place to call each other names because we have different views! There is too much GOOD information passed around on these pages. If someone asks for information to experiment on there Dakota and someone answers, well, most should know to read on and forget. Besides, maybe the experiment will be shared as a "This is what happens when......."

Anyway, just passed the 2500 mile mark on my quad and still very happy with. Through this group of fine people, I have got 95 percent of my 'factory glitches' resolved.

I keep telling people this truck is going to get me in trouble because I love the sound it makes as I aim for those open spaces!!!

    Take care ya'll

    Short and simple:

Information is information, some pepole will use it unethically, some won't.

No matter what the setting, or the subject, I really hate it when people try to impose their ideas/moral/ethics (whatever you want to call it) on others.

    Now, let's move on.

fat_fenders, I also have noticed the irritating whistle noise when the heater blower is on set at floor setting. Mine is more noticeable when set on lower blower speeds. Anyone else have this and have they successfully done (or tried to do) anything about it?
I have 1k on my 01 quad sport (4.7Lw/auto) now. I really love this truck and go out of my way to find excuses to drive it! All the previous advise on the 4.7L vs v6 was right.

Actually, I had been meaning to post about this. I have the smaller mirrors my Quad. I ordered before the 2001s hit the lots, so I didn't know that the 6x9s were no longer 'Mickey Ears' as I call them. Anyway, even with my smaller mirrors the wind noise is horrendous. Does everyone get this? I would think so, but mine's bad enough that I'd think it would annoy everyone else. Has anyone compared different mirror-sizes at highway speeds?

Ok here we go. Before I became a G-man, I was an avionics technician, aviation electrical technician on the most advanced search and rescue helo, HH65a Dauphine. 13 on-board computers. I kind of know my game here, not bragging but I really do. So what would happen with the odometer/speedometer disconnected? The mileage would drop to around 9-mpg for starters! The ECM would go into over rich (limp) mode and if driven long enough like that would foul the catalyst, and ruin the O2 sensor. A world of drive ability problems would develop and the transmission would shift pretty much whenever it feels like it. I am not kidding here. The ECM program is advanced to the point of needing the speed input like we need food.
So you see even without those pesky people (like me for instance haha) who like clean air looking over your shoulder, the blinded Quad would no longer be fun to drive anyway.
Please don't get me wrong, I do not wish to insult anybody. The person who first posted the request had a valid question. Just remember those who cheat will always loose the most in the long run. Funny how that usually works out.
Wishing a safe and happy Thanksgiving to all,

I have the smaller mirrors on my quad. Can't say i noticed wind noise out of the ordinary. But one thing i noticed with my last trucks, the wind deflector on the front of my truck cause a lot of wind noise and also cause my mirrors to shake at highway speeds

    FatFenders,

"Anyone else experience this noise or aware of a DC fix?"

If you scroll back a few, I posted a problem with my 01 blowing hot air on my face when the selector is set to "feet" only (not a lot but enough to be annoying). Also, the fan whistle is prominant until I "fiddle" with the selector and it will stop.

Someone suggested in a follow-on post that the gates are not closing properly or tightly. When the wife returns from Pittsburgh (from here in Texas) on the 2nd of Jan., I will turn the Quad into the dealer for a check. If you have not posted a fix by then, I'll let you know what happens.

Just got my 01 quad cab 4X4 on Saturday. 4.7L, Multispeed transmission 40/20/20 seating and all the bells and whistles. Only bells and whistles I didn't get was the overhead computer, leather, and sliding rear window. I live in New Mexico and I commute 50 miles round trip to work every day so I am hoping to get the best fuel economy possible. Any ideas out there how to best achieve this?
  • resqmanresqman Member Posts: 71
I have the rear slider. When the rear side windows are open, a booming noise is created from the wind bouncing around inside the cab. You can open the front windows and then the wind has someplace to go so no more booming.

Alternately you can open the rear slider and the wind passes through the cab and no booming. I have kids who love to act like dogs and hang their heads and hands out the rear side windows. I get booming. I make them open the rear slider so I don't have to open my window.

Some say that it is difficult/impossible to open the rear slider from the driver seat. Yeah, mostly. I simply recline the driver seat to the max, reach over my shoulder and open the slider. I am also 6'1" tall and only do this at stop lights, etc.

Do you plan on covering the bed with a cap? The slider is tinted and the cap will probably have tinted windows. Double tinting can make it difficult to see out. The front window of my cap has a slider that is not tinted but the rear lift window of the cap is tinted. So with the sliders closed on the cab and cap, I look through 3 layers of glass, two of them tinted. At least it helps reduce glare from headlights tailing me.

We have taken 4 or 5 long road trips in the Quad with the cap on the bed. I thought we would use the slider to access the contents of the bed during road trips. We have but not as much as I thought we would. That might be due to the age of the kids, 4 & 7. As they age, they may be more likely to use the slider to get things from the bed while under way.

I'm new to the site. I have a 2000 quad, 4.7, auto...I guess the works. When I purchased my
quad the only topper available was a LEER (model
100XQ). Leer had partnered with Dodge to make this
topper. After 3 months waiting, I finally got it
installed, only to have it leak like a siv. Along
side the toppers door on top of the tailgate, there is a 1X2 inch gap on each side which lets all of the elements in. Has anyone else purchased this topper and do you have the problem. By the way, according to the installers (RADCO), it was installed correctly. Thanks!!

fat_fenders- I posted a note asking if anyone had experienced what I considered excessive blower noise back on 10/27/00, or thereabouts. I too had and still have what seems like a lot of blower noise when the air is directed towards the floor, but according to some others here, that seems to be typical. I have noticed that even if it is directed towards the floor, I still get some air out the ducts on the side of the dash aimed at the side windows. I suspect the ventilation system was designed this way to help keep the side glass clear.....I dunno. I am trying to just get used to the blower noise, but it seems kind of excessive to me.

    Happy Thanksgiving

    I think I can help.
Starting from the rite on the selector dial which would be the defrost setting, move the selector dial exactly 5 clicks to the left. Give it approximately 3-5 seconds and I think you will not hear the whistle sound.
Without looking at the manual, there must be a variety of combo settings since there are numerous "clicks" for the selector knob to find.
    Good Luck!

I ordered my '01 QC and it has been built and should be here soon, so I have been looking around at some after market items.

Does anyone have experience and opinions to share with choosing a grill/brush guard? I am looking at Manik 4X4 and WAAG, anyone out there running a Dak with one of these?

Also, dose anyone have experience on upgrading the factory fog lights to more usefull lights while keeping the lights located in the factory fascia openings?

Any help would be appreciated, and I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

got my bedrail caps from BAK Industries, and although I know others had problem with this company, they were sweethearts to me and installed for free. The product is great and one of the few available for the Dak Quad that really looks OEM.

Now, on to my main point: Wow! I have never seen this board get so fired up about any topic before! It reminds me of a similar ethical issue where some genius who was doing a project for his university class, posted all the materials and steps to make a nuclear bomb. It was technically complete and rather simple, evidently, and every major news network jumped on this bozo - would it violate free speech and the first ammendent to censor what is on the Web. I don't remember the outcome but the argument is the same as what has filtered onto this board. I'm not a lawyer, but I believe free speech is limited to anything as long as it does "hurt or threaten" the public good. Make your own calls on the mileage sensor deal. But, personally, I don't think this board should be used to further mischeif. We pay enough from these greedy car manufacturers as it is - can you imagine a "Internet information" tax on all future Window Stickers!!!! (don't laugh - it could happen)

    Dave.

I got the slider because with the shorter bed, long pieces of trim/certain lumber would really stick out the back and flop around in the breeze. The slider gives you the option of making use of the additional cab space (read length) to carry those occasional longer pieces of lumber for your home projects. I am NOT in construction as this would ruin the seals etc. I knew ahead that it would be occasional. I don't really have to worry about someone breaking into the truck thru there, although it could be considered a weak link. For me it was a practical option.

GET THE SLIDER AND THE BIG, FOLDING MIRRORS!!!

I've had my '01 QC SLT+, 4.7 V8 for about 2 1/2 weeks. It has the large, folding mirrors AND the rear slider. I log a lot of highway miles.

I have not noticed any wind noise from the mirrors or any other body parts. I've driven GMC trucks for many years - talk about your wind noise!!! So, I know wind noise when I hear it.

I keep my rear slider open - even in these cool temps. I have not noticed any wind noise - booming or otherwise. However, you will get better ventilation if you open your driver's window slightly.

I had to special order my QC to get folding mirrors (and a few other options). I am surprized that Dodge does not make folding mirrors standard on all of its models; like Ford and GM. I park in some tight spaces and have to fold the mirrors so that pedestrians don't "accidentally" bump into them.

I've got a 2000 Quad with the Lear topper. I don't have any problem with water getting into my truck via the lift gate. I have noticed that there is a double set of gaskets on either side. Possibly one set was left off when the topper was made. The topper also came with a molded plastic cap which was installed on the top of the tailgate to give the glass a lower lip to seal against. The only problem I had with mine is the lift gate hinge on the drivers side gave a rather loud snapping sound like some thing was binding then suddenly releasing. The hinge pivot point is rather unconventional if you've looked at it you know what I mean. I applied some wheel bearing grease on the hinges and no more snapping sounds.
The one thing I don't really care for is the dark tinted glass although it does look sharp. I have the sliding back glass that is tinted and both the front and back glass on the topper have the dark tint so when I look out the rear view mirror it is really dark. I did order the "elephant ear" side view mirrors so it isn't really a problem. I don't find I hear any wind noise I can attribute to the mirrors either. Rick

asta, I know you are making a point but there is a rather large difference between providing a how to on building a nuke and defrauding your leasing company.

I have the simpler (cheaper) Leer cap, the 5'3" 100XL. I didn't like the all-glass back window, or the 'down-to-the-rail' side widows, so I bought the more traditional looking shell. Looks great, dry as a bone, and saved about $250 over the fancy one. And yes, it does have the tinted slider, headliner, double locks, etc. Its high quality, I'd recommend it to anyone. No plastic strip installed (drilled?) on the tailgate, either...
Only thing is, expect MPG to go down 1 to 2 miles, but that's the same with any shell.

TuvTest, thanks for the info. My guesstimate had been around $300 for the parts but it appears that decent units sell for $400-$700. I thought about it a bit and decided to spend $500 on tools and woodworking stuff instead.

I got a slider for the same reason others mentioned, the ability to utilize the extra length the cab provides when carrying the occasional long piece of lumber or pipe.

I have a Century Ultra series cap. It was about $100 less than the lower priced Leer cap.
Mine does leak a bit through the front rail gasket in heavy rain. Nothing major.
One thing worth noting is the glass tinting. As Resqman noted, he is looking through 3 layers of tinted glass which does make it more difficult backing up at night.
The Century comes standard with 15% glass tinting.
Since that doesn't look very dark in bright sunlight, (which were the conditions I was looking at the models under), I ordered 30% tinting which, I have since learned by experience is even tougher to see through at night. I wouldn't get 30% tinting again.

One more point on the Sliding Rear Window.
If you have back sear passengers that are a bit claustrophobic, opening the slider will alleviate some of the claustrophobic feeling.
I also open the slider to get rid of the drumming sound when the windows are open.
    Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Gator, although I too liked the advantages of the larger 6x9 mirror- (rear view visibility and breakaway feature) I found that the increased height of the mirror blocked my visibilty when making left turns. This was a safety concern for me.

If I was only 3 inches taller!!!

thank you to gator72 and to bookitty. I got a 00 Qc 4x4 slt+,bells, whistles. have had no problem with 4.7 L motor "hunting for idle" (knock on wood)the big mirrors have not been loud at all.I got the snapless Haartz tonneau cover which was a bit difficult to put on with the below rail bedliner. I ended up using "Frost King" 1 1/4x7/16 weather stripping under the rails. worked like a dream!!(ALL this Constitutional debate is giving me the willies! 2nd amendment anyone?)

There is already a nice write-up about the Dakota rear end ratios in post #3 in the Dakota FAQ topic.
