Good luck.
The wisdom of the words from Bookitty are precious and memorable.
I don't usually have passengers when I drive, but recently, had to drive my dad, 72 yr old (god bless him), to the doctors for a successful cataract operation, he made a statement about the high step in height of the truck. Though I don't have a problem getting into the truck myself, I was curious if anyone else has experienced a concern about this.
Thanks,
Bob

It is sorta interesting I found this info at the AutoPROFIT site.

gator72 - I've been running the PIAA 9007 Platinum Super White headlight bulbs in my QC since day 1 (the dealer even installed them for me). No problems whatsoever with the OEM lens. These bulbs do brighten the low beams considerably. But if you really want to light up the road, replace your stock fog lights with PIAA 510 Driving Lights and you'll swear it is daytime at night.

built in 1911 for the purpose of spanning a PA pothole. This pothole was 92 feet deep and didn't even make the top 10. I always had a great time whenever I would have to go there, and brought my family with me quite often.

Rather than putting holes in that nice Quad Cab roof, consider attaching your Yakima rack to the top edge of the box. I had originally purchased a rack with 48" bars, Qtowers and (4)Lockjaw bike mounts to put on top of my '94 Explorer. The Quad replaced the Explorer but I had over $600 in the rack and really liked it.
My fix? To make a long story short, I purchased 66" bars and mounted the bases for the Qtowers on the top edge of my box, allowing me to slide the rack assembly on and off. These bases sit on top of my "over the rail" spray-in bedliner so there's no scratching of the top edge of the box when installing or removing the rack.
Advantage - bikes sit only about 2' or so above the cab so I won't tear them off on a low tree or the drive through at McD's. They're MUCH easier to load because you can stand in the box rather than lifting them over your head. Heaven forbit they're roof mounted and I forget they're there and back in the garage!
Disadvantage - (Not for me), but if you want to haul something in the box more than about 3" taller than the sides, the rack can't be there.
I'll post pictures if anyone's interested or email me... fat_fenders@yahoo.com and I'll send some direct.
Keep on Quadin'
Mike
I didn't use Qtowers. They were the Locking Railriders which slid into the existing roof rack rails on the Explorer.
Mike
Nick, glad to here you got a new rear end (really!) That -should- resove the whining.
tmatthew - interesting link, looks like a high priced enema! I didn't read through everything to find the "miracle ingredient".
I have relatives that live in Tunkhannock! I spent many summers fishing and swimming in Fishing Creek - the creek was right behind my Aunt's property where they kept a pig pen with 3 or 4 pigs. Ah sweet memories
My family has a summer home in a village close to Forksville, PA. It's right near the World's End state park, Rickett's Glen state park, Tiadaghton state park and the Loyalsock and Black Forest Trails. Beautiful country and a great ride if you wanna break in your truck, there are lots of places to get into 4wd. Or even have a Quad Cab get together !!!
Peace, Love, Days Off, and Horsepower!!!
Could you email me some pics? My email address is txqc2000@yahoo.com. Thx for your post.
It may be that in some areas of the country that are propne to a lot of salt, snow country, that may be true as the salt can rot out the hood real quick. If you are in a temperate climate I would say it should be there.
I will be taking delivery of my Club Cab most likely next Saturday. It also is an SLT. These comments have piqued my curiosity as to what I will find or not find on mine.
Today I went by 3 dealers, all of the SLTs on the lot had the hood insulation and none of the dealers has heard anything about it being discontinued. I am in Northern Cal.
Underneath everything looks to be fine . . .I could be missing something though . . .
I took delivery of my quad earlier this month & it too was missing the hood insulation & console light. I pointed that out to my salesman, that it is listed in the sales brochure as part of the slt package (hood insulation), bucket seat package (console light) & then we also looked at the quad they had on the showroom floor which had the 2 items. He promptly, showed the service manager & agreed to have the 2 items installed. The hood insulation has a kewl ram head design on it, to boot.

bobs5 regarding you question about running board/nerf bars. I considered both, but chose the running boards because I thought they would provide more protection for the sides of the Q/C. These were ordered from a local accessory dealer and I believe were made by Owens. They are steel reenforced, had to be painted to match my Bright Silver Metallic, and required some drilling underneath the truck to mount them. They look good and cost $450 installed. And by the way bobs5, being just a couple of years younger than your father, I consider us both to be only middle aged. The step does make entry easier after you get used to stepping with the outside foot first and then sliding DOWN into the seat.
In addition to the running boards, I have had a Bedrug and a Sportmaster vinyl cover installed. The Bedrug provides great protection for the bed and things do not slide around. The vinyl cover was chosen because it can be easily removed by one person--and has a 5 year warranty.
My Q/C was delivered March 1. It does have the Rams head on the hood and Quad patches behind the back doors. It does NOT HAVE INSULATION under the hood and I cannot find anything in the literature that says it should since it is a Sport model. If anyone has any information that indicates that there should be insulation, please post the info.
hogger4 the Q/C gathering sounds like a good idea. I am interested. Timing could be a factor and also it would be a struggle to get through these PA pot holes on the way north to NY.
Sorry for the long post. It has been a while and the number of posts and subjects covered in this forum add up quickly.
Regards to all. Ken
Whats strange is that it is not even listed as an option on the option chart, just listed in the detailed package information
From the brochure page 28
SLT Decor Group: Cloth door panel trim with map pocket, Light Group, air conditioning, floor carpet, floor mats, hood insulation, bright front bumper, bright rear step bumper, bright grill, gray fascias, bright "Dakota" door badge, "SLT" hard door badge and 15" X 7" cast aluminum wheels.
From page 29
R/T Group, 5.9L V8 engine, 4 speed automatic transmission, Light Group, Deluxe Convenience group, cloth bucket seats or 40/20/40 split bench seat (no charge option) "Dakota 5.9 R/T" door decal, "5.9 R/T" tailgate decal, color keyed wheelflares, body colored front and rear upper and lower fascias, hood insulation, heavy duty rear stabilizer bar, leather wrapped steering wheel, fog lamps, suspension lowered by one inch. P255/55R17 BSW performance tires, 17 X 9 cast aluminum wheels, LSD rear, and 3.92 axle ratio, optional on regular cab and Club cag 4 X 2 sport models only.
The badges I would think are just a screw up. Like many companies Dodge wants to advertize its name in as many places as it can. I can't see them discontinuing badging even though some peoiple prefer no badges. I'll ask about that too.
After I get some information I will post it here.
It would be awesome to drive a truck over it. Might be a little bit rough on the suspension though.
NE Pennsy has some spectacular fall scenery with the color change of the leaves. Ah memories. Been about 20 years since I have been up that way.

I don'tr know why everyone seems to think they can get high gas mileage out of a 4X4 truck.
With a 4X2 you can expect a little better. The change to K&N wouldn't make much difference in mileage. What it will do is open up the top end a little but by giving you more air where the OEM filter tends to be restrictive. Costs are about hundred and a half give or take.
WAKE UP PEOPLE A 4X4 IS NOT AN ECONOMY CAR!
I got the same noise. It sounds like a piece of sheet metal slapping on something - right rear area.
I haven't gotten underneath yet to look, but I was thinking exhaust maybe.
When was your truck built?
rck
1. How easy is it to install yourself?
2. How reliable/fade resistant is it?
3. How resistant is water resistant?
4. Does it help mileage at all?
5. Is there any noise (rattling/squeaking) while
driving?
Any personal observations/experiences would be welcome. BTW, the best price I've found (shipping included) is $543. Can I do better?

Ha ha ha you guys are too much.
The badges have not been discontinued and they want to know about any getting out without them. It means someone isn't doing their job.
The 22 to 20 gallon tank change listed in the brochure as a mid year change, they cannot find anyone who knows anything about it. They can't even find it in the brochure!! (This is a club and regular cab change)
Anyway, that is the story from the horses mouth.
Since I have a 07 with hood insulation, if my 01 doesn't have it at least I will be able to judge myself whether it makes a difference or not. I'll report my opinions after I pick up my 01.
thanks for taking the time to call DC, I know a number of us in the forum were wondering what was going on. It would appear DC is trying to cut corners wherever they can.
Bob
I too appreciate the call to DC, do you have the info on who you spoke with and the number to DC, as I would be happy to let them know that my Quad made it without the badges. Also I am curious about the console light not being present either.
On a good note, I did receive a spare tire lock (cable type), which I am not sure if it was something thrown in by the dealer, or from the factory that way.

I didn't check to see if it would work the the QC's. But you can probably call Yakima about this. If it does work, I believe the Yakima system would offer you more options now and in the future relative to the types of things you'll be able to carry with your rack.
My question now is what is the potential damage that could have occurred and what should I be looking for? Any help from those with knowledge on this subject would be greatly appreciated. I am now duct taping the switch to 2WD to avoid a similar situation in the future. Thanks
Can the PIAA 9007 bulbs be found at the local Pep-Boys OR, do you have to order them from PIAA?
Thanks,
Gator72
In answer to your question about the Allegheny Forest, I have only taken a couple of day hikes in that region. I have heard that a section of the new North Country Trail has been completed through that area and I hope to hike it in the future.
I have hiked the AT in Maine from Mount Katahdin to Gorham, New Hampshire. I am familiar with the Mahoosic Notch section. Been there, done that. How did those screaming spruce hens get out there in all those rocks?
No the Big Blue trail does not intersect the Susquehannock Trail, although it does intersect with the AT. The Susquehannock Trail is an 85 mile loop trail that intersects with side trails (North and South Link Trails) to the Black Forest Trail and the Donut Hole Trail.
My most harrowing experience backpacking was while hiking the John Muir Trail in California near Yosemite National Park. A grizzly bear scratched a hole in my tent and thru the pack I was sleeping on that had food in it. Yes I know I should have hung the food in a tree, but I was too tired that night. Thought it was a dog at first and yelled at it, then looked through the hole in the tent and said "oh sh*t!". Finally ran him off by lighting my backpacking stove and nearly burning down the tent. Never a dull moment in the wilds.
I agree that northern Pennsylvania would make a great Dakota club meeting place. I think the fall timeframe would be the best. Worlds End State Park wouldn't be a bad location.
The Mailman delivers!!!
I sent to Dodge yesterday complaining about all of the things missing, especially the hood insulation. Their response was that they called and talked to the Sales Manager of Sunset Dodge in Sarasota where I bought my Quad and they said they told the Sales Manager to order whatever it took to make me happy and give me what I felt I paid for. But if the hood insulation is not available as an option, I doubt if the dealer will be able to get it. It will be interesting to see how it works out. I sure hope they find the sensor for the anti-lock brakes and get my new quad cab to me soon, I want it so bad now I can probably overlook the missing parts.
1-800-992-1997
Just because the insulation is not offered as an option dosen't mean you can't get it. It can be purchased from parts and installed. The still have to support the previous ones delivered with it. For example if you got into an accident the intent is to restore to OEM condition.
Actually, when I test drive my new Dakota, I may just make a little stink and see if my dealer will be responsive. Face it, it was a quick, no time wasting fleet order. Don't have to waste any time and I can steer them a fair amount of business.

I too thought it was the exhaust since I had one put on the truck for sound. I got under the truck and had my wife and kids push the body back and forth sideways and also stand on the bumper and push up and down. We could here the noise and it took me sometime to pin it down. It was the front of the bed near the left side where the panel behind the cab connects to the bottom of the bed. Where the weld was it was pinging. I should have taken the camper shell off and the bed liner out and put a couple of sheet metal screws in it but instead I pulled it apart from under the truck and put a lot of silcone in between and pushed a wedge in it. That stoped the nose for about seven years and just the other day it started agian. Its not in the same place as before and I can't pin it down. This time I will pull the bed liner out and start putting screws in it. If I had a welder I would re weld the seams. I now have 106,000 miles on this truck and its not dead yet and still looks almost new. Next time I will update on my 01 Q/C with 4,000 miles. I've been very busy so I don't write much are get on line much but I do thanks all of you for the form here. Hope this helps
If you want better service from a guy who knows 4x4's and slightly better pricing, call Larry, the owner of Dirtyparts (www.dirtyparts.com) in Los Angeles. His # is 310-390-9086.
Lastly, one of the most inexpensive wholesalers I've found is Earl Owen Co. (800-527-2006). These guys sell truck accessories to a lot of the dealers and custom auto shops here in Dallas. But since they carry so many truck accessories and have a very busy nationwide wholesale and distribution business, they are not always the best people to ask detailed questions to about parts. If you know exactly what you want, they are a good place to order from due to their lower prices.
Hope this helps.
One of the first things I complained about in the QC is the "hidden" 4WD selector. It should have been put somewhere that your eyes can easily glance at, especially with that user-friendly knob! I would change the front differential fluid ASAP and check for a burnt smell or gear shavings in the oil, and replace with the recommended fluid. Our more expert forum mechanics may have additional input on this. Please don't duct tape the knob, how gauche!!!!
