Found this over at nabisco. Apparently '06 Service Manuals are now available on line (for a fee of course). Jon [from CT] found the following:

Hmm, according to the '06 FSM the STi will NOT have AVCS on the exhaust side as previously speculated. The WRX doesn't have dual like the Legacy-based vehicles either.

The WRX 2.5L has a compression ratio of 8.4.

Power output is the same on the STi, 300hp/300tq. The new WRX engine is 230hp/235tq, with peak torque at 3600rpm! The new 2.5 SOHC motor is 173hp/166tq.

An interesting thing I noticed is that the STi and NA 2.5L use a 90A alternator, and the WRX uses a 110A alternator. I wonder if that's a typo.

Here's the interesting stuff: the transmissions!

The weird 1.1:1 center ratio on the WRX is gone. It is now present on the STi!

The WRX 5MT now uses a 3.70 final drive front and rear, with the following ratios:

    1st 3.454
    2nd 1.947
    3rd 1.366
    4th 0.972
    5th 0.738
    Rev 3.333

The STi 6MT now uses a 3.90 final drive in front, 1.1:1 center, and 3.545 rear diff. The ratios are as follows:

    1st 3.636
    2nd 2.375
    3rd 1.761
    4th 1.346
    5th 0.971
    6th 0.756
    Rev 3.545

WRX 5MT is 3.70 final, 4EAT is 3.90 final (changed from 4.11 previously). 2.5i 5MT is 3.90 final, 4EAT is 4.11 final. STi as mentioned previously is 3.90/1.1/3.545. The 2.5i and Outback Sport models do NOT have a rear LSD, though according to the differential section of the manual there is apparently one variation of the NA 2.5 vehicles that has a 4.11 with the 5MT, but it doesn't indicate which car. It may be the OBS.

The STi still comes with 17x8 wheels, the WRX has been upgraded to 17s as standard! 17x7 with 215/45R17 W rated tires.

The WRX has been upgraded to the classic JDM/EDM STi 4-pot front brakes with 255mm rotor, and the rear 2-pots with 261mm ventilated (!) rear discs.

The WRX sedan Curb Weight is 3,192 for the base model with cloth and no sunroof, 3,239 fully optioned with leather and sunroof. The 2.5i weighs 3,016 (!) and the STi weighs 3,351.

Good news about the WRX brakes. Hopefully that will cure whatever that mysterious braking problem was.

Interesting. It's clear Subaru is taking advantage of the low end torque of the 2.5 turbo with the new gearing.

I wonder if the new brakes will also make it to the Legacy GT.

I hope that more 215/45-17 tire choices will be available!

I'm not sure the exhaust explains a 0.6" lift. The springs look taller and there is more space in the wheel wells above the top of the tires.

I think they're wrong about that also.

Taller gearing is how they got the solid EPA numbers. The Forester XT auto gets mid 20s EPA average. Wonder if it'll be that much better in the real world.

I'm convinced that grill insert would make the Tribeca look much better. I hope they offer something just like that as an accessory/option.

My wife saw a black on at Fitz and liked it. She did not like the light green that I prefer, instead the darker colors looked better to her. Add a black grille and I'd agree.

Now if Subaru offered a 6-speed Spec B Tribeca model, as I mentioned over in the "Suggestions to Subaru" thread, that grille would be perfect. ;)

still has gray lower cladding. I guess because they also still have the "XS" trim line, unlike US-spec models.

I don't really like when it climbs up around the grille like that. The CR-V is the same way. It cheapens the look.

I prefer when all the cladding goes up to the same level, i.e. the same height as the cladding on the doors.

I don't agree with that. Volvo does the same thing on the XC70. I don't think it looks cheap, nor do I think the CRV looks cheap with the cladding wrapping the grille. In fact I like it.

Having said that, I don't think it's as successful on the '06 Forester. Like everything else, when it comes to style, I take it on a case-by-case basis, and try not to generalize.

We never have agreed about that.

I guess I'll spare you from my soliloquy about the brown cladding Volvo also offers. ;-)

Prices are up about $500 from this time last year. SOA recently had a price increase (a month or so ago), and the prices is up about $350 from that.

I don't like the way the unpainted cladding looks on the new Forester too. It probably wouldn't stand out as much with other colors like black or dark blue.

I do agree with Bob that high-up unpainted cladding can look okay depending on the execution. But I don't agree that it looks good on the XC70. I prefered the XC70 one model prior when it was a more subtle implementation.

    21/26 for 4EAT is impressive!

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Thanks Pete! :) Yeah that is impressive. 20/23 for '05 vs. 21/26 for '06 XT automatic. Hope we see that same kind of jump across the board in mpg!

The XTs improve but the base engines actually drop a little.

Funny thing is now the difference is very small. Subaru is going to sell a lot more turbos than before, watch.

can you still only get the turbo in the Forester Limited? There is still the question of extra money, quite a bit in fact. The '06 looks much nicer than the '05.

All models are moving up in content, in fact I think the only model without a moonroof is the base X.

Is that right? X Limited, LL Bean, and XT Limited all come pretty loaded up.

I'm very happy with what I see here. I'm always a bit leery of trying to force a new look on an old platform, but I think Subaru did about as good a job as they could. I can't wait until the all-new '08 models debut!

    Bob
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
no longer have fog lamps. I see they do have a NAV option. I don't remember if that was available in previous JDM WRXs?

Since we will now get 17" rims, I'm assuming what you see here is what we will be getting. Note the red brake calibers! These are from previous-years STis I believe.

Check out the windows - definitely they are tinted.

    Red calipers are nice.

    Seats are different, too.

I don't like where they put the Nav, seems too low and far from your line of sight. They should have put it up on top of the dash. At least the screen looks big.

    -juice
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Yeah, the NAV is too low, but at least it's there. I bet that will be corrected on the all-new '08 models.

    Bob
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
This is a limited edition run of 500 units. Note the NAV window.

18" wheels I believe, which is part of the sport suspension. The "B" in Spec B stands for Bilstein shocks.

I like that color leather, pretty bold, the drilled pedals finish the look inside.

Rims are nice, but those calipers should be painted or at least finished differently.

I wonder if it's different enough. They'll sell 500 easily, though.

see buttons on steering wheel, it seems like more than just sportshift buttons to me ?
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
The picture shows a 5-speed manual, so they aren't SportShift. My guess is they are the same audio buttons found on the H-6 Outbacks.

The way I read it, the next Impreza will just be slightly wider.

new forester is now on SOA website.

No XT Base, only XT LTd.
colors are exactly same as the Legacy/Obs. surprised.
  • nippononlynippononly Member Posts: 12,555
will the new 9-2x get the running changes, like the new eyes? I know it has its own bumper clip.

The new look makes the Impreza look wider - is it actually, or is that just illusion?

Is that sportshift that I see? Will that make it to the U.S.?

Isn't that the Sportshift 4EAT that's been used for some time now on JDM models? I also doubt we'll see it stateside.

Automobile News has an article today stating that Subaru may be considering a minivan! Unfortunately it requires a subscription to link the article. Does anyone here have access to AN? Juice, can you access it?

    Bob
  • sweet_subiesweet_subie Member Posts: 1,394
even if it does make one, it will be out in 5 years from now. that'll be good. I will be old enough to drive a minivan !!!

It's kind of big. Even with a fast connection, it took awhile for it to download for me.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Bob - yes, but in a round-about way, I use a subscription service that has is not yet updated with that information.

I'm holding back a feeling of nausea - a "crossover sport van" clone would spell disaster.

Look at those two silver WRXs side by side and the new one is a definite improvement. It's a face lift for sure, the old one looks kinda saggy next to the new one.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Via that service I did get this info - they intro'd an R2 Utility Package in Japan with smart keyless entry. Wonder if we'll see that here?

How come? What makes the Sportshift 4EAT not suitable for US models?

That's up on the SOJ site. It's been on sale for a few days now.

well, no nausea here I like the idea of a Subie crossover sport van.

I have often thought that the old Honda Odyssey (the Isuzu built unit) had a similar profile to my Forester (height, length, etc.). A true 7 seater on the B9 platform is something I would buy.
