Washington DC May 23, 2005; AIADA reported that riding a wave of new vehicles, Subaru of America forecasts 2005 U.S. sales will increase 9 percent over 2004 and break 200,000 units for the first time,” reported Automotive News.
The automaker is aiming for sales of 204,500 vehicles in the U.S. this year and is pinning its hopes on the new Forester and Legacy. CEO of Subaru of America Kunio Ishigami says in order for Subaru to reach its 2005 sales goal, it will need to sell at least 17,000 units of the new seven-seat B9 Tribeca sport wagon, which goes on sale next month.
The new B9 Tribeca is produced at the company’s plant in Lafayette, Ind. According to the News, “Subaru wants to sell 30,000 to 36,000 units of the B9 Tribeca during its first 12 months of sales.” Subaru sales were up 5.4 percent through April. In addition to high expectations for the B9 Tribeca, the automaker expects the Forester will continue to be its top-selling sport wagon in 2005 with forecasted retail sales of 56,000 units and possibly another 2,500 units in fleet sales. It also expects to sell about 93,500 Legacy and Outback models.

Legacy and Outback This fourth generation Legacy and Outback line-up was completely re-designed and upgraded at the 2005MY introduction to represent the latest blend of performance, technology and luxury.
For the 2006MY, we have added two new models to the line-up that provide exceptional value: Legacy 2.5 i Special Edition Sedan and Wagon and the Outback 3.0 R Wagon.

All 2006MY Legacy and Outback models have standard 17-inch alloy wheels and receive an air filtration system and engine immobilizer. New i-Active Valve Lift System is an enhancement to the normally aspirated 2.5 liter engine that improves both torque and horsepower. This technology increases horsepower to 175 @ 6000 rpm and torque moves up to 169 @ 4400 rpm. This technology is now standard on 4-cylinder non-turbo models. These models also get larger (11.5") front brake rotors.
Baja A new remote keyless entry system and security system is now standard equipment for all 2006MY Baja models. Exterior color choices include Brilliant Silver Metallic, Atlantic Blue Pearl and Obsidian Black Pearl. The MSRP of the Baja Sport 5-speed manual transmission (MT5) is $22,495. The Baja is now down to 3 colors, and there is no mention of any of the engine upgrades that the other models get. Not a good sign for that model's survival...
• There is now a WRX Limited, in both sedan and wagon (leather, moonroof, AWP)
• There is a stripped down WRX TR (Tuner-Ready) for those who compete and/or who want a bare-bones WRX.
• Steel Gray replaces silver.
• WRX now gets two interior color choices.
My initial feeling is that the new Imprezas are now nearly perfect in terms of content. What would make them perfect would be the addition of the 5EAT w/SportsShift, 6-speed on the WRX, and the availability of NAV, I bet we see those missing features when the car gets redesigned for MY '08.
Paid a visit to Fitz again today, just to say hi to my buddy over there.
He pretty much confirmed they'll make mostly SEs and the base model will be mostly for special orders only, at least that's what he suspects.
He also said they've sold plenty of Tribecas, in fact he has lost count.
Bad news for tow fans - Fitz has only had one single Tribeca with the tow package, and that one they had to trade to another dealer, so in fact they have not sold a single one.

Base XT will be dropped. For both Legacy and Outback, turbos will only be available w/Ltd, so I guess you'd have to go to Forester or WRX/STi to avoid leather & all the "goodies". Rather than just a cost savings for Subaru, perhaps this is meant to be part of that upmarket push.
Whew! Despite so many choices, it looks like if you want NAV you've gotta get an automatic, and if you want a manual tranny turbo your only choices are Legacy GT Ltd. sedan or Outback XT Ltd. Also, if you want VDC, you must get NAV (or get a Tribeca). Legacy wagon seems to suffer the most from these 2006 configurations: No NAV option and no manual turbo.
MSRP (w/destination) maxes out at $36,320 for an Outback 3.0R VDC w/NAV. This is the EXACT same MSRP as the B9 Tribeca Ltd. w/NAV yet Tribeca offers more interior space, 7-pass seating and rear heat/AC controls. Seems to me like the only folks buying Outback VDC would be those who can't stand Tribeca's looks.
My next car was supposed to be Legacy Wagon GT Ltd w/ manual. Not today, but in a couple of years, perhaps. Subaru - you just handed a customer to German competition Perhaps by the time I am ready to buy, they'll change it back.
My wife drives the German competition. I'm trying to get her into a Legacy GT for her next car. Her fine German cars have made far too many unscheduled trips to the shop. They do have a very nice waiting area though. My Subaru's on the other hand seem to have very few problems.
That was precisely my intention too, maybe in the next 4-6 months. Now I must consider accelerating my car buying decision, and looking through what's still available, or hope SoA will change their mind.
My dealer buddy told me not to expect too many base models, the SE will basically play that role.
If you recall, in 2003 Subaru came out with an SE model and the base models all but disappeared. They were for fleet/special orders only. They are as rare as hen's teech.
So you might even want to drop the base model off that list, and start with the SE.
Judging by the cost of this car, it's not a true competitor. The Lexus will compete with the A4, 3 series, and Infinity. The IS 250 will be a nice car...but pricey. No free lunches over at Lexus.
Also, did you read the Edmunds preview? They were not too excited about it...

Easy way to tell the '06 from '05 models the wheel caps on all '06 Subies now use the oval star logo, and not the word Subaru.
The Legacy 2.5i shares same wheels with the Legacy GT. The 2.5 Outback's 17" wheels are new. They look like the JDM Forester 17" wheels, but I can't swear to that.
Gee Bob, I'm not sure if my detail photos from the Solberg/Miller event last evening will show you much more than those; the rear diffuser on the STi, maybe?

Those images SOA released yesterday afternoon. I had heard, when I returned the Tribeca on Tuesday, that SOA was going to have press release on the new Impreza that would occur just before Petter's event, on the same day. Wasn't sure if pixs would be part of the deal though.
It looks like that the changes are in the sheetmetal and under the hood, plus long-waited safety improvement in non-turbo models, but the interior stays the same. Feels a bit incomplete, but I understand them - they just put it in ('05) plus as I understand '08 will have entirely new car. I can see changes for '07 - it will be interior, which will probably migrate to 2008 new car (or not if the car is really new). Can you see the pattern? It was the same as '03-'04-'05.
Also, the releases keep us in the dark about WRX (non- STi) new 2.5 turbo lineup. Just mentioned it, no details. I WANT SPECS!!!

By specs I meant of course horsepower, torque, performance etc. One would think that 2.5 turbo will be significantly different than 2.0, thus regular WRX is probably much bigger leap over the '05 than STi is (which features just the sheetmetal change and some new gizmos). My suspicion is that they still have some things at works for the US release (you know - emissions and such, which can affect final numbers), that's why they don't mention them not to get trapped into Mazda RX-8 situation. But I am guessing here...
Outside temp gauge is new. That's standard on all '06 Imprezas.
As to power, you can bet the new 2.5 turbo will be far easier to drive fast than the 2.0. Turbo lag will be almost gone. Test-drive a Forester XT back-to-back with a 2.0 WRX, and you will see what I mean.
I just noticed that the '06 WRX has the quicker steering ratio found on the STi. Both have 2.7 turns lock-to-lock. The '05 WRX had 3.0 turns lock-to-lock. The turning circle is the same for all cars.

The SE is perfect for me - moonroof with cloth. If we bought a sedan that would be a front-runner for us today.
VDC gets NAV standard, let's see if prices go up, it's $1200 more than a Tribeca 5 pass Ltd so hopefully it won't.
