My son put down payment on Tuscon Blue Hybrid back in May. Dealer said he would sell car at MSRP. My son arranged financing through credit union for 60 months at 2.5%. Car finally arrived but at last moment dealer is saying that if he finances externally, he will sacrifice $500 discount (never previously mentioned) and they will add additional $500 to price of care ($31.2 vs $32.2). Dealer says offering 5.25% for 60 months even though my son told him that he is aware Hyndai financing offering 3.49% for 60 months. Dealer says he can refinance after 90 days w/o penalty.
Sound pretty shady to drop this info at last minute but my son needs car asap and doesnt seem to have much choice as $1k pretty steep price to pay for external financing. Any potential pitfalls with plan to finance through dealer, save the $1k and refinance in 90 days?

Lots of people do that, to qualify for the in-house incentives, but ultimately get a lower APR to save on interest.
Programs change between time of order and time of delivery; may not be as shady as you think.
