if you put it into a roth instead you still would have owed the taxes on it, Just would not have gotten the check to pay them with!

The company offers a Roth 401k now but to roll it over would involve taxes on the whole amount and since I’ve decided to start taking it out and spending it I’d rather just pay tax on the amount I use in any given year. I’m a little too old to do any long term investing.

the advantage to the Roth is not getting taxed on the earnings when you finally spend them. The contribution you get taxed on when it comes out of your paycheck. If you are going to use that money right away it is not worth putting it into the account. Once you stop working though you can just rollover your 401K into your IRA, and there are no tax implications to that.

I rolled my 401(k) into an IRA after I got laid off.

Last year I started converting the IRA funds to a Roth, but only enough to keep me in a lower tax bracket for those contributions.

my wife and I had an assortment of former employer 401Ks collected, so 2 years ago after we moved to the last house I finally got ambitious and cashed them all out and rolled them into IRAs we already had. Much nicer (and more estate friendly someday when our son gets stuck as the executer) having it all in one place (other than our current employer plans, and as soon as we retire finally those will be getting rolled over too).

PSA: make sure to have a full list of all old employer accounts (savings or pension) with contact info with your other financial papers like the will.

Not sure we will ever have it make sense to start doing Roth conversions. Will see after we retire (not doing it will currently working) if it is worth the IRMA hit (assuming the M still exists in 3 years). Entirely possible we will just wing it and see what happens at RMD type (and hope they push the start year for those back a few more times)

When my son started learning to drive I was a nervous front seat passenger- even though he was doing fine. I asked a fellow HPDE instructor as to why I was nervous riding with my son when it didn't bother me at all to ride with a complete stranger at 130 mph plus on a track. My friend said that he thought it was because on the track there isn't any oncoming traffic, intersections, etc.- in other words, the uncontrollable variables are essentially nonexistent. I think he was right.

Yes, agreed. I feel the same way when I do a highway stretch with my students. Not as many distractions.

But, I also tell them that things happen a lot faster on the highway, and to look further down the road.

@oldfarmer50 If you have current earned income, you can contribute to a Roth IRA on your own. Your heirs can leave it in the Roth, accumulating gains tax-free until 10 years after you're dead. You can contribute up to $8K for you, and another $8K for your wife. (as long as you have that much income)

The use of a wood chipper to dispose of a body is also something that happened. For early 2000s true crime TV afficionados, Dr. Henry Lee (of "Trace Evidence" fame) worked on that case.

Too difficult for some people to handle.
I checked, clothing is #1, followed by Dyson vacuums and Keurigs but I have no idea why, they sure sell well and there are lots of companies making Keurig pods...they may get returned in big numbers but they also sell in big numbers.
One explanation, Keurig's need cleaning once in a while, some people take them back if they need a cleaning, and Costco takes them back.......probably an agreement with the maker.

That is because they're horribly unreliable and built as single-use (non-serviceable) units. It is unreal how wasteful they are in the current environmental landscape.

My BIL was a nervous wreck riding with his kids so he was glad when i offered to do it for him. I think a lot of parents are like that because they are naturally worried about their kid’s safety.

The bulk of my assets are already in a separate Roth IRA. The work 401k is minuscule by comparison. It’s funded by pre tax contributions from my paycheck with a 4% company match plus profit sharing. To my knowledge, any withdrawal from the 401k is taxable. The few thousand a year I pull out of it won’t put me in a higher bracket and it won’t be exhausted in my lifetime. I could convert it into a Roth 401k but that would incur more taxes.

I just finished converting all my taxable investments into the Roth account and although I earn enough to max out additional annual contributions I don’t see the point in adding more. The kids will inherit enough to keep them comfortable.

I always felt better when I was in the front seat when my sons were learning to drive. I guess I caught that attitude from my Dad when he taught me to drive. We were a one car family back in the 50’s and I always got the car for legitimate reasons if my parents didn’t need the car.

I’ll never forget one time when my Mom asked my Dad, “why do you always let him have the car? Why can’t his friends parents let their sons get the car once in a while”? My Dad’s response was, “I know he knows how to drive but I don’t know how well his friends can drive”. My Mom never again questioned my getting the car after that.

FWIW, all of my friends were pretty good drivers but I always felt I was better.

Best coffee I ever had was out of one of those several-gallon dispensers at the Hucks rest stop in Beaver Dam. Blueberry flavored! I recently got a few packages of Great Value that were blueberry flavored, but they were out the last time I was there.

In terms of accounts, I'm an optimizer, and my cards alone would probably drive quite a few people bonkers:
- "Everyday" 2% back credit card
- 5% gas credit card
- Hotel-branded credit card for bonus points on stays
- 3% or 4% (can't remember) restaurant credit card
- Discover Card that gives somewhat random promotions, some of which are worth doing
- Very old credit card that I haven't used in years, but has an extremely high limit, so it helps my credit score
- Target debit card for 5% off
All paid off monthly, unless they're offering a 0% promotion.

Our Keurigs last at least 2 years, and the pods cost about 40 cents each compared to coffees at the coffee shop we go to after tennis....$3.99, +tax+4% for using a credit card+20% tip is almost $5. Talk about waist. And the pods are recyclable these days. I don't know how much waist there is in the big coffee machine shown above.

I did go to the bank in the same plaza and they have a big coffee machine and lots of flavored coffee choices, and they have nice chairs....I am thinking maybe the guys should start going to the bank.

Everybody has different coffee preferences. I personally don’t care for the Keurig taste, but Nespresso is pretty good. We just use a basic French press with a thermal carafe. Works for us!

99% of the time I use my BMW MC; it's also linked to Shell Fuel Rewards account. I use the points for BMW parts/service or Amazon and PayPal purchases.

I like really good coffee… but for as little as drink these days (one cup in morning, and occasional evening cup) I’ve grown used to the Keurig machine. It’s not the best but with decent brands of K cups it does the trick and is convenient.

Sometimes on the weekends I’ll make a pot of French press which is my favorite

Keurig is largely dependent on the k cup you buy (shocker). My go-to for a while now is Da Bomb from Java Factory, which I get by the case from Amazon. My wife gets Folgers caramel drizzle, which I find undrinkable.

The weirdest to me interns of optimizing ( or Aztecs) is points people. My sister was one. Spent more team working on schemes to accumulate travel points than working to make money. Then traveled all over the place but never seemed to actual stay and enjoy it. The fun was in the trip. So fly to Turkey, have lunch, then fly home. Stuff like that.

The red in the picture doesn't look like OEM color on my phone. I wonder if it actually has that violet tone in the red?

Azteks can look somewhat okay in certain solid colors. But that ain't one of them.

There is a faction of car owners in the urban metro area who paint or wrap their cars in unusual colors.

If he chops off the rear he’ll lose the speed stickers that were on the rear side glass. No ones going to believe it’s a fast truck without those speed stickers. Bad idea.
