Haha. I thought yours had a white top.

That one I pictured has been sitting for quite a while in a lot next to the baseball field where I do groundskeeping. I can't believe it hasn't been hit by a foul ball, but so far so good.

Well craptastic, main floor ac crapped out. I changed the capacitor but the contactor was stuck (thankfully on) and fan motor seized. A little Liquid wrench and we are back in business until it can be repaired.

It’s nice to be able to do repairs yourself when it’s as hot as it is now and it’s the weekend.

I’m sure I told about my compressor cooling fan that stopped working a few years ago because the starter winding burnt out. The thermostat turned on the compressor but it didn’t cool like it should have. I went outside and noticed the compressor unit cooling fan wasn’t on, thereby the cooling coils were pretty warm but I could hear the compressor running. Easy temporary fix was to get a long knife and insert it into the grill on the top of the compressor unit until it reached the fan blade. All I had to do was spin the fan blade with the knife to get it to turn (doing what the starter winding does). The trick was which way to spin the fan. When the starter winding fails, you can start the fan motor either way by mechanically spinning it. I got lucky and got it right the first time I gave it a spin. The air is supposed to move out the top.

Went on line, spent around 150 bucks and I was back in business in 2 days. But until I got the new fan I had to go outside and give the fan a spin every time the thermostat called for cooling.

I was lucky at night because I could turn the thermostat off and open the bedroom window and leave the whole house fan running all night. If that happened the last couple days, I’d be out of luck because it’s been still pretty warm outside during sleeping hours. It never hurts to get lucky.

HH Gregg....I recall buying an Hitachi Rear Projection TV from them....at the time, probably the best one on the market. As such, it was expensive (especially given today's big screen prices). The sales guy actually threw in the letter power recliners the used to seat customers in to demonstrate the TVs.

    Ah...memories.

I think they were actually based out of Indiana, but did have a large presence in Cincy. They closed very abruptly.

I saw a nice red 2005-09 Mustang GT convertible on somebody’s lawn for sale in Rutland VT today. Thoughts ran through my mind of buying it to replace the Sebring but I don’t know why since I’ve only been able to drive it once since May because of the weather.

    Looked like this:

I don’t know why I torture myself like this. When I started shopping convertibles 8 years ago I looked at Mustang and they were all 3-4X the price of the Chrysler. I’m sure that hasn’t changed.

Must be the season for that. Last night my son’s window unit crapped out on the cusp of a string of near 100 degree days. Luckily, I had an extra unit since I replaced the downstairs AC a few weeks ago.

The infuriating thing is that his unit was only going into its second season. Well past the 90 day cheapo warranty.

When I bought this house in 2015, the A/C unit looked really terrible--rusted and barely any paint left on it, but it ran fine. It was so old that the home inspector's database didn't go back that far. Same failure, on that one--the fan motor locked up. I didn't know about the Liquid Wrench trick, but I had a spare window unit and was able to stay comfortable for the couple of days until I got the entire unit replaced. They offered to order the fan motor and just replace that for around $1k, but then I'd still have a 30+ year old unit that was cosmetically awful. No issues with the new Trane! It's definitely gotten a workout the past few days.

One thing that's nice about Ohio is that they have competitive natural gas and electric suppliers and a nice tool to compare offers.
I am currently paying 6.67 cents per KWH for electricity and 48 cents per cu/ft for NG.

A year after my son and his wife moved into a 75 year old house, the A/C stopped working. When they took off the cover, there was a snake (deceased) that had gotten in and shorted out the capacitor.

Another case where it made more sense to replace everything, rather than drop $1000 into the old one.

When we were getting ready to move in 2022 (new house under contract, new one soon to be listed I think) the Lennox AC died. That was about 10 years old and had a few issues along the way (capacitor for sure). This failure was a “big” part (compressor maybe, or motor? Whatever is in the big box that cost $). Turns out something was under warranty. So we paid our share (probably labor) and had that replaced. If we were staying long term I might replaced the whole thing but the furnace part was fine. So maybe $2k instead of 10k and worked fine. The unit still looked nice.

The AC guy hedged a bit but did say that what we replaced was really the heart and main part so it should last a long time. But never know with 10 YO electronics, etc. so I felt fine selling the place like that since the AC worked great and breezed through inspection. And good chance I would have ended up making that call even if I was staying.

Did it just stop turning on at all? If so ... the new units use ultra cheap GFCI plugs and they often fail. Solution is to install a new plug. $4 at Lowe's / HD.... won't be GFCI but we survived for many years without GFCI on window ACs.

One of those involved committed suicide to avoid the reckoning. The kickback corruption came from the utility owning two nuclear plants. i believe I read recently someone at the utility was requesting a delay or pass on legal proceedings still going. I believe a small part of the original fees is still in place for the ratepayers--the original fees included monies for two regular power plants in INDIANA being paid by the Ohio ratepayers. Man alive.

Similar problems with kickbacks and other alleged corruption have been existing in the State Teachers Retirement System for almost 15 years or so. Only the Teachers system is being plundered like the power company corruption. Not the other 4 smaller systems. My wife is retired teacher.

Before any large repair bill, I'd always check the efficiency difference from old unit to new if purchased. My thinking is avoid the cheapest end of the new offerings and buy up a notch or two. The highest, most expensive units sometimes have troubles as well as the cheapest units.

We went away a couple of weekends in May, so I didn't actually save money but my electric bill was $44 for that month.
This morning my wife was kind of flustered because her garage door wouldn't close.
If you used the remote, it clicked a couple of times but didn't move.
Using the wall button, it would move about a foot then reverse.
Trying the modern repair of first resort, I unplugged it for a few minutes then reconnected it.
Wall button seemed to work the same way, until I held it down.
At that point the door continued closing, so I just held until it closed completely.
Tried the wall button again and it worked. The remote also is back to opening an closing the door.
Not sure if I needed to unplug it or just hold the wall button down until it closed to reset it.

On the door opener clean off the photo eyes and make sure lined up. My new one did that reversing and I called the company since under warranty. They said try that. The button is the tell. Holding down the wired button overrides the sensor beam which is why it will close.

You people jinxed my son’s AC with all this talk. We were there a week back and they put it on (first time this year I think) and it didn’t generate much in the way of even cool air. They had someone out today to check it. New system going in tomorrow. Not sure of exact diagnosis but it’s from 1999 and still on Freon. Surprised it lasted this long and not going to be fixable. Not what they needed with all the new baby expenses.

I told them to move before the baby but didn’t listen!

93+ here today, with heat index well above 100. The house A/C is fine, but the GTI is struggling to keep me cool. It's parked outside, which doesn't help.
