Hello! Would love to know the MF and RV for both the LT and RS at 36/15.
    Zip 94538

LT: .00269 MF and 71% residual
RS: .00149 MF and 65% residual

    All drives

    +2% or +3% for 12K/10K

Anywhere in CA will be the same
One thing I found today at two Chevy dealerships - they would not use the $7500 Federal Tax Credit upfront to reduce the Cap Cost. They said "That $7500 tax credit is built into the RV % - it doesn't come off the vehicle price with us. Other dealers may do it differently." (I found that true, yes.)

I don't need to put the tax credit towards a higher residual. Back-ending it and having to finance it, is how I saw that.

So I leased an Ioniq 5 SEL RWD.

We don't know for sure that GM does this; other members have reported it on various GM EVs (LYRIQ, Silverado EV, etc.)

A higher residual has the same affect as a cap cost reduction (a lower payment), with the benefit that it's not taxed. In CA, 9% (roughly) of $7500 is $675 that comes out of your pocket - or added to the cap cost.

Yes, in fact, that's apparently what Hyundai did, too. I looked at the Lease agreement and my RV is much higher than on my worksheet. I told them I wanted $0 drive-off, no down/upfront payment, and my FICO was 649. I don't see any $7500 Fed Tax Credit on this anywhere. This is how they showed the $14,500 Lease cash. (It looks like they did the same thing as Chevy dealer was telling me they would do, except the Chevy dealer told me what they were doing upfront.)

    Cap Cost Reduction: 12,692.34
Tax on Cap Cost Reduction 1,300.96
    First Monthly Payment 506.70
    ------------------------------------------------------------
(Total) Rebates & noncash Credit: 14,500.00

    Gross Cap Cost: 48,885.00
Cap cost reduction: 12,692.34 ("Lease Cash" less 10.25% local sales tax & first payment financed)
    Adjusted Cap cost: 36,192.66
    Residual Value: 26,764.40

See, I thought I could take $14,500 lease cash PLUS the $7500 Tax Credit ($22,000 total) off the Gross Cap Cost (vehicle net price) and then calling that ($48,885 - 22,000) $26,885 the Adjusted Cap cost (although I didn't account for the tax) and assessing the .55 RV on that Adjusted number. Nope. That's what Chevy was trying to tell me. No idea where the $7500 Tax credit went. Into the dealer's profit margin I guess. ("Not all incentives/credits are stackable" or some such explanation.)

Dealers can't keep incentives. The tax credits go to the owner of the vehicle. On a lease, that is the leasing bank. Those incentives can be passed along in any manner the manufacturer/bank chooses. (or not)

Thank you, right. You're very helpful. So for leases, it is a commercial buyer who gets the credit, to whom the income restrictions do not apply. It was intended for use as a income-restriction "workaround" to get more EVs on the road. But not all lessees may benefit from it, if their vehicle mfr doesn't feel they need to "recognize" it at the point of sale to move enough vehicles off the lots.

So the manufacturer knows upfront that they are getting this $7500 back in 72 hours, and the consumer should know that when leasing, the credit doesn't exist for the consumer but rather for the dealer/mfr (on eligible VIN) if they need to use it for marketing/sales purposes.

Basically the $7500 clean vehicle credit only applies to actual consumers for tax purposes if they buy, not if they lease.

If I had realized this, I would have used the $7500 clean vehicle credit as a negotiating tool simply to lower the gross capitalized cost (vehicle price you're starting with). Meaning, my starting point for price for a lease would have been MSRP less $7500, because the mfr/lease-owner gets that in 3 days from the IRS, and that is not including any money upfront from the consumer and any other incentives being offered.

So for Equinox RS, even if there are no incentives being offered, you could walk into the dealer and ask for the $7500 "tax credit" (which they will get on a lease) to be applied to reduce your cap cost, and see what they say.

Do I have it right, now?

The dealer does not get the money. They aren't the owner of the vehicle. The leasing bank gets the money. The incentive to the consumer is whatever they say it is.
