here we regret that Woolworths left UK during the financial crisis in 2008/09

I think Woolworths was gone here before I was born. I have no memory of visiting one.

I remember going to Woolworths 5&10 in a time long long ago.

As long as a pristine preservation piece wasn't sacrificed, no problem for me - keeps it out of the scrapyard. These cars are not feasible to restore without becoming substantially upside down, at least someone is having fun with it.

I remember Ward's clearly - when I was a kid my dad liked to shop there when we visited Yakima (which was going to a real "city", they had malls!). I think he might have bought a stereo there once, and I recall clothes shopping.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,787
Interesting. I was looking up some local history, and apparently the Ward's store didn't close until 2000 in Anchorage. Woolsworth was there until 1997! I don't remember going into either of them. I know the Wards location was in the Mountain View neighborhood, which was where my grandparents lived in the early 1960s, but it had gone waaaay downhill by the early 1980s (and really hasn't gotten any better since then), so it wouldn't surprise me if they had just drifted away from shopping there by the time I have any memories of it.

I'm pretty certain that the tiller is older than I am. I have a photo, somewhere, of it sitting in the garden behind me while I was playing in the yard, and I was a wee tike (maybe two or three?) in that image!

I recall there was Montgomery Ward Plaza or something similar in Yakima, torn down some time ago. I guess Woolworth was out of the inland PNW by that time, I have to believe it was in the larger towns/cities way back in the day.

It is amazing how long some tools and such last from the 60s and 70s. I have a Black and Decker drill that was my Grandfathers. It has to be from the 60s and it is insanely powerful. Sounds brand new and dims the lights when first turned on.

I somehow got a YouTube feed of a guy from the Netherlands (I think) who found a 1970s push mower still new in the box. Never touched. He pulled it out, put oil and gas in it, and it started on about 3 pulls. A little tweak to the mixture screw and ran just fine and mowed normally.

That lawnmower video was suggested for me too, funny thing. I wonder if current models would age similarly.

Thinking back, the lawnmowers we had when I was a kid aged in dog years - no doubt to being cheaper models and being treated roughly. I don't recall the engines being huge issues (although I want to say one would emit smoke) but the chassis and handle decayed. I remember at some point we got a deluxe model that was self-propelled and had some kind of start assist, and it was like living in the future.

When you said push mower I assumed no motor at all.

That was on my mind because earlier this week I saw something I had not seen in a very long time. The house across the street that the young couple who suddenly split up moved away from was empty until the last couple of weeks, when a father and 20-something son moved in. They are almost never there except on weekends, so it’s been fine so far. On the weekend they were out front to mow the lawn for the first time. Somehow they found a reel mower, human powered. It was fun to watch for the entertainment value only. Tons of effort. Luckily, neither keeled over.

I remember when I was a kid seeing those with a gas engine on top to spin the reel. Seems safe. :o

in the sixties my dad had a patrol lawn mower - made by Atco who were the best brand

Evry year the Atco would be carted out to the (rare) VW pickup and after its service it sat in the shed

it inevitably failed to start (rope pull system)

Eventually it caught fire while cutting the rear lawn and we had a couple of scorched wooden fence panels that summer

When I got old enough I used to push it along and it always got away from me as the hand throttle / clutch stuck

The petrol tank was over the engine and the exhaust was close so the fire was predictable

We went over to electric mowers and then spent years having frayed cables

and they weren't great in Welsh rain

    happy days

No. I replaced the drive belt, spark plug, and muffler about ten years ago. B)

The red car with white flash in mid distance is an Austin Cambridge A60

I think the blue car in foreground is a Simca Aronde?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,647
I agree the foreground car is an Aronde from around 1960. Has to be very rare as a hardtop, would have been uncommon new and much more so by 1970.

Driving away from camera near people in crosswalk looks like a 69-70 Ford wagon.

Hopefully not a rerun - I've had this saved for awhile and not sure if I neglected to remove it. Somewhere in Seattle some time ago, zooms well:

I was hoping someone would recognize the Ute. Seems like a rebadges other brand (Mitsu was my guess). Picture was taken in upstate NY but it had a NC license plate on it. Only name badge I saw was on the side. I think it said S/Exceep maybe? Nothing on the back that I saw.

It's a 2000-ish Galloper II, with the hood scoop it's an Exceed. Based on the Mitsu Pajero/Montero.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,813
I made a typo. It said Exceed, and it looked like a baby Mitsu to me. Script on the hood said intercooled turbo (diesel?) LHD. I assume it was never sold in the US, so maybe up from Mexico or down from Canada?

very cool though. Assuming you can get parts for it, I would not mind having one.

    Hyundai SUV is definitely Mitsu-based.

The Broadway pic must be mid 90s. I think I see a white Contour and an 83-86 Cougar near the middle of the pic.
