saving money I believe. But considering how bloated cars have become, don't really buy that they care about weight all that much.

I mean, really… when you consider the sheer incompetence that so many drivers demonstrate on the roads every single day, do you seriously think that they would be able to successfully change a tire on the roadside without killing themselves or someone else?

    ————————————————
At least give them a chance. With no spare they have no chance. Back in the day I remember all cars had spares. Don’t remember hearing of too many mishaps but of course there were some. All I want is a chance and I’m sure most drivers do too.

I usually do laundry the day before and pack the night before.

We always pack the night before. Any earlier and we would probably forget what was in there, or start taking it back out.

Frankly, I’m surprised the Broncos pulled it out. A few penalties by the Eagles and a big non call on intentional grounding certainly helped.

I first learned that car companies ordered downgraded versions of tires oem when the Explorer/Firestone controversy broke around the year 2000. To save money, Ford ordered cheaper versions of Firestone tires.

I think companies are more careful today to order tires that are "good enough," and meet safety requirements, but at least some are still ordering downgraded versions of tires that are available to consumers at higher prices.

For instance, my wife's 2025 Outback has Yokohama Avid GT tires, which at a tire store cost around $200 per tire. The commercially available versions seem to usually have a UTQG wear rating of 740, which translates to around 65,000 miles. But the tires that came with our Outback only have a rating 400, which is maybe 35,000 miles or so. They still seem like good tires.

Our Outback does come with a temporary spare, but because of the AWD system the temporary is not supposed to be put on the front. So if you get a flat in the front you're supposed to put one of the rear tires on the front first, and then put the temporary on the rear. In any case, you're not supposed to go more than 50 mph for 50 miles on the temporary tire in the Outback—and so no Interstate driving. This is apparently not just because the tire is small, but because driving faster than that or more than that might mess up the awd system? A few models of the Outback have a full-size spare, and so there is room there for one if we wanted to spend the money to get one.

The 12-minute video below shows the process of changing a front flat in for an Outback.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xga1W-Qjrjo&t=17s

The Yokohoma Avid GT is what came on my Legacy Sport. They had a tendency to slide when cornering. It was particularly bad when it was raining. They are the ones I replaced with the Michelin Cross Climate 2's after about 3,000 miles. My wife probably would have never noticed since she is a very gentle driver.

I interrupt this sports, packing, and tire conversation to ask an important question:

How many of you are using a mechanical keyboard?

I just bought one a week ago and I'm still trying to get used to it. Very sensitive to having the wrong keys pressed. Reminds me of the IBM Selectric typewriters I learned on in HS.

I have to arch my fingers more above the keyboard. I think it will be good, once I reshape my habits.

Do you mean a physical keyboard like you'd have on a modern laptop computer, or a nostalgic keyboard, like the ones designed to mimic the 1980s-1990s era IBM keyboard?

I have a traditional external keyboard for my work laptop. I much prefer that to typing on the laptop keyboard. I only do that with my personal laptop since that actually sits on my lap! In both cases I use a mouse with it.

    • 9 Nine Taco Bells.....there are so many jokes here, I have to let it go.
    • Keyboard - 100% always use a regular desktop style keyboard unless I am in a meeting where I take my laptop off the dock
    • Refs - It is what it is, the Eagles got away with a false start on a tush push against KC and certainly are paying for it. Two BIG no calls in 4th Qtr. The Eagles have themselves to blame too. They changed their game plan because the fans and AJ Brown were crying they weren't passing enough. Running the ball and controlling the clock wins games, especially with a good D. I think a loss here was good - let them think about it and regroup. Eagles are still a contender to win the bowl again IMO
    • Packing - we always try and get ahead of it, my wife is a planner. If it was just me, I'd probably do it the night before. When I traveled for work heavily I'd be known to do it the morning of.

Oh - almost forgot. Since parking my truck in NYC is not something I care to do (there are no lots near where we are staying that will fit it) we are taking the EQE. I test fit the suitcases we have in there to make sure we don't overpack. The trunk is a decent size, but not huge.

Anyway.. while I was in there I lifted the truck mat up (it actually has a handle and it is hinged). There is a compressor in there, and what I guess is some sort of puncture sealant. Also a first aid kit and a wheel lock set I didn't know I had. No spare.

I was stranded away from home once. My oldest son and I were looking at colleges and developed car trouble. AAA towed the car to the nearest service place. I rented a car and we resumed our trip. A few days later the car was repaired so I drove the rental car to the service place (about and hour or so drive for me) , turned in the rental and picked up my car. No sleazy hotel stays required.
Whatever caused the problem was unusual, it’s so long ago now I don’t even remember. No amount of pre-worrying and planning would have changed anything. Things happen. You deal.

I haven’t been stranded on the road since the 1980s. Somehow I got a tow truck to respond (no cell phones) and was towed to a garage where the mechanic just happened to have a spare alternator laying around and he slapped it on well enough to get me home. It failed several months later and my regular mechanic said it wasn’t even an alternator for my car brand and it had been so jury rigged that it was bound to fail.
Was thinking about the last time I had a flat tire.......Probably in the '80s. Now, you just inject "goo" in your tire, and empty a can of air into it, and go get another tire.

Not necessarily. That won't work with some flats, especially on the sidewall. Don't forget if you have Run Flats, it will probably mean buying two tires, they have to be close in treadwear.

The spare in the Club Sport is underneath the trunk floor. In 30 years of ownership I've only removed it once, and that was so I could have easier access to the fill plug on the differential when I was changing the fluid.

The only reason you want your tires to be close in diameter is when you have an AWD system or differential that would see the difference in diameter as wheel slippage- and would then possibly cause the clutches to wear excessively. That applies to all tires- RFTs or not.
The LF RFT on my C43 had an impact bulge on the inner sidewall and my SA told me that there was no need to replace the RF tire- even though it had 14,400 miles on it.

All of mine are mechanical.... except my laptop, which I hate. I feel like I'm back in the 1990s... and in a good way! I am not sure that I could go back to the other style of keyboard anymore.

I should clarify, though, that just because one might have a keyboard, that doesn't mean it is mechanical. I call the mechanical ones "clicky keyboards," and anyone who has used one recently will know why...

Man! No rain here for a long time. We had, I think, about 2 days of drizzle in about the last 45 days.

Animals must be seeking water. I've seen more deer than normal, and I saw turkeys in someone's driveway yesterday as well as today.

We are supposed to get rain tomorrow and, maybe, Wednesday. Hopefully we do. I used weed & feed on my outfield and don't have sprinklers out there.

    Tell me about it.

Awhile back Son #1 decided not to track his 2017 (maybe it’s a 2018) Chevy SS (Holden) anymore because parts are scarce and if you can find them they’re extremely expensive. So, he fixed that delimma by buying a Vette. I can’t remember the year or type but I think it’s a Z5 maybe a Z6. that had some mods made to it which he would have made himself so he saved that expense. Of course he’s done a few more mods to get it almost the way he wants it. He got it from a guy in Ohio who, according to him, was practically giving it away to make room for a more exotic car (he’s a collector).

He’s installed some pretty good after market pads and rotors but doesn’t think the pads will last more than one more track day. I’m pretty sure he said that will be the 6th track day for them. The rotors look like they’re good for at least 4 more track days. It’s a good thing he does his own work otherwise he’d go broke hiring out for those jobs. I think it’s also a good thing that he’ll be putting the Vette away for the Winter which will give him some time to save up for next Spring when he’ll be taking it out for another full track season.

Florida apparently considers 115 MPH a super speeder and they are starting to arrest people for simple speeding. The law is that 50 MPH over the speed limit (65+50 = 115 MPH) is a SUPER speeder. Of course, the hypocrites and low IQ couldn't accept or keep consistent to their own math, and decided to also abandon their equation of speed limit+50 MPH= Extra Bad, and just say 100 MPH also qualifies, regardless of the speed limit.

Maybe Edmunds could establish a membership benefit fund out of a portion of our dues payments to bail out the more lead-footed members here who seldom drive below 80MPH so they can be bailed out when the long arm of the law collars them.

Sadly, it looks like this website hasn't been updated in over a decade. I never used it to decide "I can drive 105 MPH in this state with no consequences," but it was good to know you didn't want to exceed 90 on a VA interstate, at risk of jail time, etc...

In NC, 15 over is reckless driving, in a 70 zone, 10 over is considered reckless driving. That doesn't seem to deter many.
