And if you’re on US 40, it’s long, straight, and has very few cars (many trucks, however).

It’s been well documented in traffic science that people drive what they feel comfortable and safe with. Which used to be how they set speed limits. Which is why if people are already driving at their comfort limit (say 75-80) they aren’t going to go faster just because the SL was raised from 55 or 65 to 75.

I 100% agree. People generally always drive according to conditions. Most conditions are readily apparent. Failure to adjust for conditions is a mental error.

If people do speed up it's because there are more and/or wider lanes and/or less traffic congestion, for example. Another common speed up causer is changing lanes to make them perceive you want to pass.

I've noticed this in a lot of posted You Tube videos from dash cams highlighting the disease and symptoms of the Anti-Destination league because they pass leisurely. In my own practice, I've actually rarely dealt with this phenomenon as I've had 200+ HP vehicles since 2003 and I always pre-empt the practice by passing with authority. If they speed up (and I'm sure they usually do), it's almost always already "adjusted to" by my pre-emptive passing speed.

Once in a blue moon someone will decide they want to be the faster driver and actually pass me after I passed them. I let them pass on the left.

My brother is retiring at 51 from being a career-long firefighter of some type for about 30 years. Of course, he's been for quite a bit now unofficially retired using accumulated leave until the end of the year. He said something about COLA likely outpacing what he gained from going an extra year, so that the extra year was quote "stupid to have done."

My father did something similar retiring from being a State of CA worker and being able to use leave and sick time to retire a year later than he actually stopped working.

As a lifelong private sector worker, must be nice.

And speaking of auto insurance, got my renewal; ~10% increase. My agent shopped, switched back to prior provider, rate steady, maybe a few $ drop as I got a $75 credit for donating to a favored charity.

One thing that infuriates me is when someone will pull out to pass a semi and then basically match the speed of the semi for a mile or so, since it’s so safe to drive in the semi’s blind spot holding up traffic, then once they get ahead of it, they drastically speed up. Idiots.

That's when you need a sidewinder missile equipped on your vehicle.

Winter arrived up north. Only 31 out. Probably got a frost so good luck to the new grass I Was trying to grow. House must be pretty well made at least. Upstairs where it should be cooler the thermometer on my clock said it was 65. At least that downstairs. And we have the heat shut off. High yesterday was about 68 so not like a ton of stored heat either.

    Very foggy too.

Grass doesn’t mind the frost, it actually grows better in cool weather. Unless some unscrupulous retailer sold you annual grass instead of perennial grass seed.

Regular grass loves the weather. Mostly the 2 heavy rain events. Come back to life. I am worried about the seedlings from the seed I put down. A couple of weeks ago. I heard those can die if they freeze before getting established.

What could a bot do that a person couldn’t or is it just a matter of convenience in submission?

I deal with complex claims. The policies I deal with work differently than personal lines insurance that most people are familiar with and there are a lot of exclusions and other caveats which sometimes result in things not being covered under the policy. So, we have insureds asking AI for help in arguing for coverage. Thankfully, AI doesn't have my experience level (yet!)...

So now we not only have to fight the insurance company to get reimbursed, now we have to fight AI. When my 2015 E350 was demolished, I had to fight like hell to get what they owed me...I paid extra for full value coverage......they were to pay for a new 2017 replacement....and they kept trying to give me a car without as much equipment on it.
And then there was the flight interruption insurance we paid $500 for. The flight was interrupted, I kept sending in the information I was asked for, they kept asking for more stuff....it went through 2 arbitrations and they said if not satisfied I could go to another arbitration.
They wore me out....I told them I was going to avoid their airline unless it was my only choice left. I checked their site and it seemed almost no one collects....the guidelines for collecting make it almost impossible.
I also found out that the insurance company agents get promotions and bonuses depending on how well they can stonewall claiments.

Yeah, that’s what I was gonna say but you beat me to it.

I was out in the garage helping Son #1 layout where he’s going to run wiring for lights and receptacles. He’s adding 10 receptacles and I forget how many led lights he’s going to add. Must be at least 5 six footers. That’s in addition to the 3 two footers he’s already installed to replace the 3 old fashioned porcelain bulb lights. I guess that’s what happens when you buy a large house with a 3 car garage. He’s already installed the 4-post car lift. That was an absolute must when he looked for a house.

Getting back to the receptacles, I think he has an aversion to extension cords. Pretty sure all he has to do is drop a 110 volt power tool cord on the floor and it will find where it wants to be plugged in. :o

“Dress your best”, means different things to different folks.

When we were on our last cruise there was a couple who “dressed up” in cowboy attire complete with 10 gallon hats. According to a couple we spoke with after dinner who sat at the cowboy/cowgirl’s table they do this all the time on Captains Night. The western dressed couple said this was their 14th cruise and they enjoy the attention when they walk into the dining room. The couple we spoke to who sat at their table said they were the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. They just started something on their first cruise and enjoy continuing it.

Costco has a tricky price match exclusion for days 31-90 on the 90 day return policy (FYI - IMHO price match price protection policies should match return policy time frames). Anyway, Costco's AI bot wasn't letting me get a price match because I was unfairly considered as past 30 days on my new TV. It's unfair because the first TV had problems so I had it exchanged about a week earlier. IMHO that means all transaction dates and warranty starts should be renewed on the date of the exchange/return/new TV replacement delivery. Since it was a $0.00 change Costco kept using the "old" date. I called to speak to a person and they saw it my way and gave me the $100 + tax price match I deserved.

Seems easier than forcing me to buy the same TV elsewhere to save $107.75.

Costco and Amazon customer service always gets an A from me.

    I wrote this on Sunday and decided not to post it, it would upset some nice people. But, since there isn't much going on, and though I deleted the post I can't get rid of it when I refresh, I'll let the chips fall where they may (I live by that saying);

Today we went to see Mrs D100s family, it was a 320 mile round trip. I filled up with gas before leaving, and I still have almost half a tank left, maybe 40% because the second half goes down faster.
I checked the range for Teslas: The range for a Tesla Model 3 varies by trim, with the EPA-estimated range being up to 341 miles for the Long Range AWD model and around 303 miles for the Performance model. Other estimates show variations, such as the rear-wheel drive model having an estimated 308 miles or 267 miles depending on the source.
Your supposed to charge it to 80% and not go below 5% so that cuts the range to more like 240 or 250 miles.
Anyway, you see the problem. We stopped once on the way home for a coffee....that took 10 minutes. In an EV I'd have to stop on the way back and charge up at some point.....plan the trip so I can get to a charger, and then spend 30 minutes to an hour charging (we had lunch at 1 p.m. so didn't have to eat again between 2 and 5 p.m.). I just drove, stopped when we wanted to, got a 10 minute coffee and bathroom break on the way home. I like to keep my life simple as possible.
Also, if we went in really cold weather mileage can be cut by up to 40%, and in the summer the a/c would take some power too, we'd probably need 2 30 to 60 minute stops.

@driver100 - it's generally recommended not to charge over 80-ish percent for everyday usage. It's fine to charge to 100% for a road trip, if you're expecting inclement weather, etc... Damage is done to lithium ion batteries when they stay close to full capacity for extended periods of time--e.g., someone has a five mile commute and recharges to 100% every evening.

That said, I would not target hitting a charging stop at 5% range remaining, since I prefer a greater margin of error, but I think any of the Teslas you mentioned would easily handle that roundtrip with one charging stop of 20-30 minutes.

partly the battery degradation worry (though I thought that was a lot less of an issue in modern batteries, but I ain't an expert!), and as Corvette noted that is not something that matters a few times a year on a road trip.

the bigger reason is that batteries charge a lot slower at the end (so after 80%, maybe 90%, the rate goes way down so that last 20% might take longer than the first 60-70%. So it is also a time efficiency reason in normal use.

and as usual, different needs for different folks, and you should get what fits your lifestyle. Me, in the last year I can't recall 1 round trip of over 300 miles where I did not stay for a couple of days (with the big one being a week long vacation to the Jersey shore where I had many of days available to charge up!) But we take the truck for that anyway. And in normal use, around town, I might have to plug in an EV 1-2 times per month. But I still like the idea of a PHEV for our use.

We thought that too which is why we got a PHEV at first. We discovered EVs are very easy to charge and great to drive. A lot of the worries people have about them are really not a factor in EV ownership.

    I wrote this on Sunday and decided not to post it, it would upset some nice people. But, since there isn't much going on, and though I deleted the post I can't get rid of it when I refresh, I'll let the chips fall where they may (I live by that saying);

Conclusion. EVs are for some people and not for others. Mercedes are for some people and not for others. There is a reason we all aren't driving around in Panther cars with 350K miles on them.

That makes me think. My IPad has (I assume) has a lithium battery. After a full day of use it’s pretty well down in charge and I plug it in for the night to get it back to 100%. I also assume that it reaches full charge after a few hours but then stays plugged in at 100% for the rest of the night.

Am I damaging the battery by leaving it plugged in at 100% all night?

BTW I’ve drive EVs from Albany to Burlington (150 miles) and didn’t have any trouble. Of course I didn’t have to do any charging.

iPad stops drawing a charge, as soon as it's 100%.
