    I
So just to be safe, I call them this morning (Friday) to check and after another round of no returned calls finally get told that they accidentally did the recall work on ANOTHER 2019 Kia Soul instead of mine and it might not be ready until next Tuesday. If I had wasted the trip down to the dealer before checking I would have gone ballistic.

I have very little experience using dealers for service but have any of you guys experienced this kind of incompetence and poor customer service?

I find that hard to believe, they should check Serial numbers pretty carefully before doing warranty work, if they want to be paid by the manufacturer. Don't they keep the key with the work order?

Now, that's a job I would hire out and not DIY. Seeing those things mis-installed and spinning the entire unit until the wires snap, or wobbling uncontrollably, or even just getting it up the ladder to the box without incident, would make me happily pay the money.
In my first house, my dad and I installed the ceiling fans. In our most recent house, my step son installed them all.

Yeah, I’m starting to be suspicious of that explanation. I just hope it’s not something worse like the car fell off the lift and they’re trying to put it back together.😩

Yep! That's why dryers do not come with cords: The dryer itself cares not. If you have a three-wire outlet, then use the proper cord and just wire it as such in the dryer. Even if you have an old dryer that is pre-four-wire, you can wire it with a four-wire outlet/cord by just attaching the ground to the back panel of the dryer with a self-tapping screw.

All of my dryers all came with cords. At a glance, it looks like the same cord/plug used on my electric range.

I am considering it. but mostly because of a lack of time, and not having the stamina I used to for doing that kind of work. Though the ones I bought are touted as much easier to install. So I might try the first one and see how it goes, but paying the electrician to just come and do them is a definite option.

My experience with ceiling fans is limited to watching them being installed on TV fix-it shows, but I recall that you need some extra structure up there to handle the forces of the fan action. That can’t be fun to retrofit?

got to go out house shopping today. Apparently with all the craziness going on, and higher interest rates, the market is still pretty hot. at least for decently desirable houses!

No, not for us. Daughter and SIL came out this weekend (we took the whole family to see the Broadway touring company of Wicked. Fantastic show BTW) and went exploring one area south of us this morning before the show, and are going to another area north of us tomorrow. The agent we used 3 times is helping them too, and showing some places now though they are likely not planning to buy until into Q1. Though that might leave them fighting in the spring hot market. Way less inventory in January/February around here. But also fewer buyers! so we shall see.

Would not be at all surprised to see the princess find a place she loves tomorrow and want to offer right away. Even though she promised her hubby no buying this trip. All bets could be off if he loves it too (and tomorrow we are looking at the area he really wants to be in).

tentative plan though is that they finish their lease and move everything out here and into storage for most of it, and live with us while they look. But hopefully they will have something under contract first so it won't be indefinitely, but it is way, way easier to look in a hot area when you are local to it.

When retrofitting a fan on the 2nd floor you can usually mount the box from the attic using the ceiling joists to support the box.

The trick is to do it on the first floor when you can’t work from above. That’s when you use something like this:
    https://ledshub.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/4700-Arlington-FBRS4200R-FanFixture-Box-with-Adjustable-Bracket.jpg

Of course you can use this gizmo on the second floor too but it’s more expensive and working from the attic is not difficult at all.

@jmonroe - I've seen those gizmos before. I think code has required ceiling fan rated boxes in bedrooms (and possibly other rooms) for a lot of recent history, but in older houses like mine, it's a crapshoot.

pretty sure I have the same boxes in the rooms they installed fans when built and where they just put in ceiling lights but can check with the builder or electrician that did it.

one advantage to a brand new build in a state that likes to go over the top with regulations. You are going to have a lot of stuff like this in place.

Not too many base base model Bronco Sports out there. They have a confusing array of models above the stripper base version and they get expensive very quickly. Keep in mind that the Sport models are just rebodied Escapes and a lot of them have the little 3-banger turbo engine. The big-boy Bronco is a BOF pickup-based vehicle and really gets up there.

    Busy week on the road:

Wednesday, into Boston to see Hamilton. Wowzer, see it if you ain't.
Thursday, during our little slice of Hurricane Melissa (on the Hutch at a low point under a bridge, a Mini Countryman submerged almost to the windows. All northbound traffic just south of the lake scene diverted off the road), a 10 hour stint behind the wheel to get to Jersey City, NJ. Then Uber to MSG to see the last few minutes of Pat Benater followed by a young looking and very energetic Bryan Adams. Good show. Ridden back in brother-in-law's Pallisades.
Friday was much sleep, followed by passing out candy for Halloween on the streets of Jersey...City.
Saturday, a much nicer and quicker ride home. Including a short stop at our fave native American donation center, as they awarded each of us a token to play with in their colorful ATMs (deposit only, seemingly).

The car portion of our program? In the NY/NJ area I saw 3 Fisker Ocean's on the road, running! Those poor folks...

Snow? What is that? Was 80 about a week ago and its 70's all this week. Chances of snow and ice are nil; so I can drive fast according to conditions. (Lows in the 50's - so no, no ice at 5 AM either).

    https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/san-diego-is-not-progressing-on-promise-for-zero-traffic-deaths?utm_term=city heights hit and run,halloween,road safety in san diego,san diego pedestrian killed,homepage showcase,mobile showcase,san diego transportation,san diego city council,local news,pedestrian safety,dangerous intersections,city council,author: perla shaheen,san diego news,san carlos hit and run&utm_source=pushly

Taking a quote from the above article:
"Vision Zero, launched by city leaders in 2015, aimed to achieve zero traffic deaths and serious injuries through strategic infrastructure improvements. However, city data from the last five years shows no consistent decline in pedestrian deaths or driver fatalities from collisions, despite the significant financial investment."

You didn't need to be a psychic or fortune teller to predict this with about 100% reliability. They added stop signs where that 12 year old boy was recently killed. Painted lines on the ground, and now the zero vision clique is complaining there's a bus sign and tree in front of the new stop signs obscuring them. That's what happens when you rush the installation!!!!

The real solution is a pedestrian bridge. I also think the flashing yield signs is effective, but I think the stop signs make things worse in the big picture because 97% of the day children are not walking to and from school, and 0% on weekends and holidays. People complain that the City should have listened to neighbor complaints previously, but there seems to be evidence some "Karens" were complaining about the intersections since the 20th Century. Also, there would likely be a stop sign at every intersection everywhere if the City listened to every complaint for stop signs. It's obvious where locations exist where there's stop signs everywhere and no real justification for it. Unwarranted unjustified stop signs is what causes people to start ignoring them in the first place. If you arrive at a stop sign line 10,000 times, and there's no other traffic or pedestrians or bicyclists to yield to, you might just assume it'll be the same the 10,001st time.

I personally never assume anything while driving. I assess real-world then current live conditions. You would be amazed how many negligent illegal unsafe left turners or illegal unsafe lane changers that cause a collision state some excuse starting with "I assumed...."

Very true with regard to stop signs. That happens quite regularly in rural places like where I grew up in Oregon. I was lucky enough to avoid it directly, but there were several students at my school through the years who died as a result of either a blown stop sign in the middle of nowhere or a cut curve in the same place. Most everyone I know has been nearly run off the road by the latter a time or two. And yet.... people still do it!

Snow? What is that? Was 80 about a week ago and its 70's all this week. Chances of snow and ice are nil; so I can drive fast according to conditions. (Lows in the 50's - so no, no ice at 5 AM either).

In northern VT this morning I could see snow on the higher peaks. Harbinger of things to come.😩

For those considering a kitchen reno, a piece of advice: if you can, take the time to pack up and label all of the things that live in drawers and cupboards. That is something I didn’t do because my contractors were going full speed ahead and did it themselves. Months later, I’m still looking for certain things. Tonight was the latest, 6 months later. I don’t often prep vegetables but tonight I felt like making a carrot side to go with my dinner. I had a fairly recent vegetable peeler which is now MIA, I discovered to my dismay. I assume it must be somewhere in the house, possibly buried among all the leftover detritus in the basement, but that will require a search party tomorrow. Grumble grumble…

I'm sorry to hear that. I've been packing up my office in preparation for carpet installation this Friday. I have a full bookshelf, a credenza with storage underneath it and a desk with several drawers. All of them are now packed into 8 cardboard boxes, along with the bigger items on the bookshelf that were too big for a box.

And that doesn't count my computer stuff and TV that also reside in the room. The carpet installation guys will only move items weighing more than 45 pounds. Gotta do the primary bedroom sometime this week.

Ugh, not looking forward to this after just completing 8 weeks of basement construction.

as if we didn't have way too much stuff of our own in the house, the princess brought a car load of boxes with her this weekend when they came to visit. We went out looking at houses, since they are planning relocate by house by the spring, and buy a place. So part of the basement will be collecting stuff from their place.

Don’t be so sure. I once had a contractor installing some underground pipes and I thought I’d be nice and left some of my hand digging tools for them to use. When they were done my tools had disappeared and they ghosted me when I asked for them back.

Your peeler could be preparing carrots in someone else’s kitchen.

Big milestone here today: it looks like I'm finally off Windows 10 and have transitioned to the new Windows 11 Dell laptop. I'm viewing this forum and making posts using it right now.

One thing which has nothing to do with Win 11 that I dislike - I don't know if this is common across the industry, but this new laptop has a very limited number of USB ports, one A (original) size and one C size. Everything I have connects with those so I have to get another hub to expand availability. Still hate the excess white space in File Explorer windows and there is no fix for that without using some things I am not comfortable using. I treated myself to a new Dell wireless keyboard and mouse so that is nice. But the old flaky 2013 machine seems to be surplus now. I'm sure I'll find some things missing as I go along but I think most of my staff is transferred.

Looks like upgrading to windows 11 is going to cost me approximately $10K. Money I really wasn’t planning on spending especially given how much I’ve had to spend on inventory and how slow business has been as of late.

I don't think so, only because these guys were part of a church and in fact, when they were doing some outside work early on, drove me crazy by playing some sermons and audio recordings of religious stuff. I don't think theft was on their bingo card.

Stuff just disappeared. The most baffling was my late mom's sewing kit. It was always in one spot in a room that had stuff moved into it temporarily. It always lived in the same spot on a closet shelf and now it has vanished. I turned the house inside out looking for it with no luck. I actually had to buy a cheap replacement from Amazon to fix a button last month. I only use it for things like that a very few times a year, but because I remembered her using it since I was a little kid, every time I open it, I had memories of her - the one example that comes to mind was when I was maybe 10 years old when we went on vacation and she bought some sewing stuff from W.T. Grant in Bangor, ME, which was still in there. I truly don't think anyone took it but perhaps it got tossed by them accidentally.

@nyccarguy - yikes! I assume that involves some hardware upgrades.

So, just throwing this out there as a short term option so you can plan upgrades over a longer timeline:

You *can* update to Windows11 even if the Win11 installer says 'no.' There's a bit of a trick to it, but you basically just mate the Win11 ISO to the Windows 10 installer file. Bingo - upgrade pretty much any machine.

I had my IT dept here breathing down my neck to dump about 20K into computer upgrades, and it just isn't in the cards right now. So, instead, I replaced four machines (out of ten) and upgraded the rest that way. They all receive their Win11 updates without issue.

I can't see the point in tossing perfectly good hardware over some arbitrary line in the sand drawn by software.
