IIRC, Discount Tire does free repairs. The Ariya has an inflator kit and the Maverick has an OEM compact spare and a compressor in the road kit I keep under the rear seat. Would Fix-a-Flat have helped? I think I have a can in the Maverick, but it's probably very old.

Almost had another dryer story to tell as my son announced that our dryer wasn’t drying even though it was running and tumbling the clothes. After some time scratching my head we noticed that the heat control dial had been somehow been turned off so it wasn’t sending any heat into the clothes. Problem solved.

I would have been really upset if the heating element had failed since the unit is only about a year old.

How much should I charge him? My current pay rate is $18/hour but I think an appliance repairman should get more than a car jockey.

Find out what the going rate is for an appliance repair man in your area and charge him half of that. You’ll probably be making triple what you get from your day job and you’ll look like a hero doing it.

Advances in technology are great, but trying to marry older technology without having to replace older units can be a friendly challenge. After 9 years the Samsung tv expired. It had composite, hdmi and optical inputs. Newer tvs do not. I had the tv, dvd, and yes, VHS, connected to provide audio through a Technics Class H receiver with a 5.1 Surround sound converter. After getting two converter boxes, I can route audio from the tv and vhs to the receiver. For fun, I enjoyed watching The Wall on VHS. I was amused when HI FI was briefly displayed on the screen. How we have become spoiled by superior video quality, but we didn’t complain back then. All good. By the way, space constraints limited me to a 43 SONY Bravia.

Just to clarify, maintenance repair can't total a car, correct everyone? Only crash damage repairs "total" a car, because Insurance companies obviously don't want to pay more to fix your car than it would cost to replace it. That's not good for the bottom-line.

Wrong, any repair that is more than the vehicle is worth totals the car. The difference with accident damage is an insurance company makes the decision that is basically a financial decision while maintenence repairs the decision rests with the owner who may see value in spending more than the car is worth to repair it.

My home office chair (a COVID-era Staples branded one) appears to be "totaled." Any recommendations for a replacement? Aerons are plentiful and cheap (compared to new) on Marketplace. There are also a few Steelcase models which were very highly rated by Consumer Reports, but harder to find used. I don't think there is a gallery in my area where I can sit in any of them.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 54,166
I couldn't buy a chair without trying it out first. Sat in way too many last time I was shopping until I found one that was actually comfortable. Still using it! And if it broke I would just consider that to be one more reason to retire.

@stickguy - I visited my local Office Depot last Friday to order a new desk. I only had the mental bandwidth to deal with the desk on that day, but I might go back to sit in the chairs. The two staff I dealt with were extremely pleasant, which has to be difficult for any retail worker during this time of year.

Speaking about cooking, is anyone using one of these?

Apparently my neighbor has one but doesn't use it and won't get rid of it, according to her son.

@driver100 - my late grandmother had an electric skillet she used for certain things. She also had an electric range, but I can't recall what got cooked on which one. IIRC, part of the electric skillet could be put in the dishwasher.

Brings back memories. My mom had the exact same one when I was growing up, and pretty sure when she passed away 10 years ago it was still in the kitchen and being used. She was not much of a cook.

Picture looks great and it is a perfect fit for that corner! I have a 65" Samsung in the bedroom. It's 5 year old and still has a great picture.

It's funny we just had a discussion on electric fryer pans at home the other day. It seems like an appliance that kind of faded away. I'd think they are great to do breaded chicken cutlets or anything lightly pan fried. They keep an even temperature and less mess to clean up your stove after. What I do still have and use all the time is an electric griddle. Great for breakfast food.

I was in a cooking mood yesterday. I made stuffed cabbage, baked mac and cheese, a boneless leg of lamb, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, chicken Caesar salads for lunch and pork roll/sausage egg and cheese biscuits for breakfasts.

What has happened to Gmail? Whenever I go on, which can be 20 times a day, I get 2 to 6 unwanted ads, probably 50 a day. For each one I have to go on it, block it, and press again to keep it from showing up again. What a pain, most of the ads are things that mean nothing to me.
They show up as if they are emails, not ads along the sides. It is making Gmail almost unusable.

Odd. I’ve used Gmail forever and don’t see ads ever. They tend to filter out a lot of junk emails without me ever seeing it. Plus I run an ad block extension in my browser that may be doing something to spike them too.

Yes, same with regard to AdBlock. I always have that running on my browsers. However, I do see ad "emails" in my phone's email program. They are contained to a specific ribbon, though, so they aren't difficult to just ignore.

There's a little convenience store/gas station nearby that sold a $3 million lottery ticket a few months ago.

The guy that won bought a new bright green Corvette. He still dresses in his old clothes and lives in the same little house. I see him in there occasionally playing the "skill" games.

The Corvette seems to be either at his house or at the store. His house is about a quarter mile from the store. He could walk there. :)

It's possible that it isn't used in Canada as much.......I only noticed it when I came to Florida. I get ads for cars, insurance, apartment rentals, lots of cars. Sometimes the ads are related to what I have been looking up. It takes 3 clicks to block each one. I guess its the price for using Google.

Yes, when I buy something I get more ads from that company. If I look up something then I get related ads. I am sure everything I do on the computer is recorded, sold, and I become the target for any ads in my wheelhouse.

There is something from Google pop-ups, that I think is related to the Chrome browser. I started up a Windows 11 laptop, that hadn't started in about two weeks. And, got about 50 pop-ups. Had to re-configure the Chrome browser to stop the pop-ups (they were already blocked).

I use gmail.com for one of my addresses and I've not noticed a change in how google is pushing out propaganda or advertising. BUT i use a client program on my laptop to read the emails. The client has a button next to each email to mark it as spam, then Thunderbird, the client program, puts things like that one into spam.

I looked on gmail.com and signed into my email there, and there's a vertical row of 3 dots at right side above the first email. One of the choices is to filter emails like this one that it's next to, and I did not follow, but I suspect filters can be set to recognize those as spam.

On signing into gmail.com, google tried to make me give them a new recovery email and my home address. Nope, they don't need that info to sell to someone.
